NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- McCain heads into tonight's debate here down in the polls and in need of a game-changer. Three weeks after the Wall Street crisis began, the latest NBC/WSJ poll has Obama up six points, 49%-43%, which equals his biggest lead over McCain in the survey; two weeks ago, Obama was up two in the poll, 48%-46%. As NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) put it: “John McCain finds himself in a hole no candidate wants to be in” -- behind with less than a month to go. Remember, while six points might seem like a small lead, it can translate into an Electoral College landslide if this is what the margin is on Election Day. What’s more, while pundits (including us) couldn’t agree who won the first two debates, the poll makes it crystal clear who won: Obama-Biden. By a 50%-29% margin, voters said that the Dems bested their GOP counterparts at the first two debates. In fact, it appears the combination of the economic downturn and the debate performances have just served as a double stomach punch to McCain. What will be the verdict for Debate No. 3? And just curious, are voters grading the debates on a curve, meaning McCain and Palin have more to prove with voters while Obama-Biden get the "change" benefit of the doubt which then translates into easy debate poll victories?

Video: NBC's Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on tonight's second presidential debate in light of Barack Obama taking a six-point lead over John McCain in the latest NBC/WSJ Poll.

*** The negative turn: It’s also worth pointing out that McCain’s negatives have increased as he’s gone on the attack against Obama. In March, his fav/unfav was 49%-27%; now it’s 43%-39% (+4). By comparison, Obama has gone from 51%-28% in March to 52%-35% (+17). In addition, Obama’s numbers among independents have shot up in the latest NBC/WSJ poll: Two weeks ago, McCain led him here, 51%-38%, and now it’s Obama up four, 42%-38%.

All this highlights a big problem for McCain: It’s increasingly harder for him to go negative, even though he’s now embarked on that path. And it might be hard for him to go negative at tonight’s debate given its town hall format. McCain's tone and body language tonight might be more important than anything he says. It's a tough position McCain finds himself in: On one hand, the temptation to make Obama unelectable and drive home that point is going to be great tonight. But if McCain does it in a way that makes it easy for Obama to paint him as out of touch on the economy, he could have a hard time closing the gap. That said, what if McCain finds a big econ issue that paints Obama in a corner and forces a big idea debate on McCain's turf? That would be the ideal solution for McCain, the problem is finding that issue…The 90-minute debate begins at 9:00 pm ET from here at Belmont University. It’s moderated by NBC’s Tom Brokaw.

*** It’s the economy, part 64: Consider in the NBC/WSJ poll: 59% say "economic issues" are most important. And when you combine that number with the 15% who picked "domestic issues including health care, education and the environment," nearly three in four voters care about issues hitting them at home -- rather than the 16% who pick foreign policy and the 8% who pick social issues. Among the 59% who said economic issues, Obama leads McCain by 15 points (54%-39%). A few other notes from the survey: among "high interest" voters (we are not calling them "likely voters" just yet), Obama leads by nine points, 52%-43%. But there's one bright spot for McCain: In the battleground states (which in this survey we define as: CO, FL, IA, MI, MO, NV, NM, NH, OH, PA and VA), he's tied with Obama at 46%-46%. So as we noted yesterday, adopting the Kerry-Gore strategy of finding the narrow path to 270 will likely get McCain to close this gap sooner than the national polls might pick up.

*** Throw the bums out? One other thing is pretty clear in the NBC/WSJ poll, if you are a member of Congress -- no matter the party -- you could be in a heap of trouble in November. Just 13% approve of Congress’ job (compare that with Bush, whose approval rating is 29%). Moreover, Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s fav/unfav is 23%-41%. Ouch. That said, Democrats enjoy a 13-point lead over Republicans (49%-36%) in the congressional generic ballot, which has been essentially the case for the last several months. In short, voters are still blaming Republicans, even though Democrats now control Congress. Republicans, we have four-letter word for your problems: B-U-S-H. If a Republican can figure out how to be anti-Washington, they have a fighter's chance because the anger out in the public is as anti-Washington as it is anti-Bush.

*** Fix the base tour: On Saturday, Palin campaigned in Carson, CA. On Sunday, it was in Omaha. On Monday, she was in Clearwater and Estero, FL. And today? She’s in Jacksonville and Pensacola, FL, and then she heads to Greenville, NC. Her mission has become clear: She’s on the "fix the base" tour. Palin's positive ratings combined with her still mediocre qualification ratings (just 41% believe she’s qualified to be president, versus 74% for Biden) make her in some ways the perfect surrogate to go after Obama. She's considered likeable and voters will listen to her attacks; if she were being asked to talk policy at this point, voters might not take her as seriously. Look for Palin to continue in this attack dog role, which for her own politics should serve her well in the long term as she hopes to be the conservative hero for years to come. If McCain-Palin doesn't win, the candidate that was the most aggressive of the two will be rewarded by the base who will fret that the GOP didn't do enough to take down Obama.

*** One-in-ten approve: As we mentioned above, Bush’s approval rating in the NBC/WSJ poll is 29%. But it becomes just 10% when you exclude Republicans. That is just stunning. Remember, that 10% job approval is among Dems and indies. Sure, Democrats are anti-Bush, but indies are a 50-50 split between Obama and McCain, and they are pretty anti-Bush too.

*** What's that, you say? Ted Stevens’ trial yesterday didn't go well for the incumbent Republican, who is facing a VERY difficult contest for re-election in Alaska. Tape recordings of Stevens were played for a jury. Very Perry Mason-like stuff. Remember, Stevens is the first sitting senator to stand trial since 1981 (ABSCAM).

*** On the trail: Biden is down. Palin, in Florida, holds rallies in Jacksonville and Pensacola, as well as in Greenville, NC. Michelle Obama also is in the Tar Heel State, campaigning in Jacksonville.

cranky old man's metamucil dose just got upped..hence all this verbal diarhoea...hockey mom needs to dig out her brains from her closet of skirts..
they cannot even keep their bases intact(im sorry how do u lose Indiana and Florida..what magic did you both do??)
..what are they going to do with the country if we give it to them? make wasilla the national capital and beer the national drink and moose hunting the national sport? that is all fine if you can tell us what you plan to do with this crisis..dont jump aoround questions and throw dirt on the other party....
One true guideline for spotting a liar in the act, is to take note of their inability to look the opposition in the eye when they start to slander their opponent's character.

Palin and McCain aren't even that good at checking the facts before they start slandering Obama's character, but you have to give them points for consistency -- they just won't shut up spreading lies!

During the first debate, John McCain actually demonstrated what a "coward" he is, when he either refused to or simply couldn't look Barack Obama in the eye when he was talking down to him. How shameful and telling, Mr. Staight Talk. Maybe you should have checked your dirty tricks at the door, but then again, you are untrustworthy.

I suppose that even a professional liar like John McCain, who may feel ashamed of the lies his campaign operatives have been spreading about Obama, might still have enough common decency left to shy away from direct eye contact with his opponent, when he knows what he is saying is a lie. It will be interesting to see if McCain course corrects tonight, and is actually able to look his very capable adversary in the eye. Turning that page may prove even more difficult for McCain in light of all these recent scurrilous attacks on Obama's character, from the RNC flying monkey troop.

My guess is that McCain will try to maintain a little more eye contact this time, but will not be able to keep it up for any length of time. Once again, his shame will translate into looking cowardly and confused about so many things. Obama, will look Presidential and rise above these personal attacks.
Clinton gave us the .COM recession and now Bush gives us the SUBPRIME recession. You can't trust any of them, they probably go out drinking togetehr after the debates. They are all in the pockets of large corporations and wealthy contributors. Maybe we should vote "None of teh above".
Ok folks the Dems are the ones who opened the vault for loans.  anyone and everyone got one.  When REP wanted controls they said there was no problem. Our crisis is beacuse of the Mortgages.  SO ELECT OBAMA and his LIBERAL Friends you want to see your future look at MI.
I THOUGHT MCCAIN WAS UP 2 POINTS,whats going on? can some one explain this, How can this happan?
this is how shallow and desperate Repugs have become... Look at the bottom of the article for some sheer irony!

I just saw an "Obama Indoctrination" film on FOX about a school that is indoctrinating the students with pro Obama slogans.  These kids looked like neo- Nazis, Blacks, wearing black Tshirts, with their arms folded and marching around together.  The teacher doing this was fired.  Thank God.  But what a scary thought, if this is only the beginning if Obama gets elected.
How do you think the other kids in the class felt while this was going on??
How can you people be so blind.

Everything that you throw at McCain/Palin, turn it around to Obama/Biden and they come out WORST in every aspect.

Example: You talk about experience for Palin. But what about Obama's? For God's sake, what has be done?

It is really scary what he's doing.

You have donations from "Good Will" and the likes.

You have no information from what he did in college.

You have socialist policies.

He has done things to his convenience and nobody has questioned him on it.

He "leaves" his church because now he does not agree with it?

AFTER 20 YEARS?

Friends with an admitted terrorist who hosted his "coming out party" and he just "knows of him"

OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE!!!!!
I hope all you Obama lovers have done your research cause your "saviour" has a pretty scary past and you might just find yourself being forced to worship allah in the next ten years.
Since Mr. Ayers is a well respected professor and his wife a lawyer.   Is Palin and McCain also stating that the college is harboring a terrorist?  That each student that attends his classes a terrorist and that the association or even taking a class makes them a terrorist candidate in the years to come.  This line of attack is insane and what is happening is that again McCain/Palin is using fear as well as race as an issue for the american public.  This line will not just polarize the democrats and republicans but will polarize america back to a Black and White society. McCain and Palin have not proven they are for america, only that they want to win at all cost.  McCain and palin are elitist and Palin is a Racist.  Probably the only people of color she knows has been out of this election.  Joe six pack does not gain favor in the world of a minority.  Joe six pack is a red neck depiction for white america
polls, pols, and pundits: no one wants to call thge endgame of the McAin campaign what is us: a morally repugnant personal assault on Barack Obama that simply ignores the demonstrated superiority of his ability to plan, adapt and execute a campaign, to develop sound positions on policy which frame comprehensively his view of the nation and the world, and to refuse to oversimplify the challenges ahead or to be anything other than pragmatically optimistic about meeting them.  This--not screaming at clouds, being fooled by the perfume on a dress, or pretending your biopic is real--is the self confidence and smarts we need in a a leader and a President. It's time for the media to stop rolling with the spin and counterspinning with fools like Buchanan and the entertaining mugger Olberman. It's not about MSNBC ratings anymore, or even trashing Lou Dud and Wolfie, or the kool-aid crowd at Fox. Get past your fear and the tatic of symmetry. Report the facts, and if one side looks much worse to you than the other, check your facts again and if you still stand by them, for the sake of country and for God's sake report the story as it it.
I swore four years ago as a die hard conservative that my shame in claiming to be proud and republican had been tarnished and I would never go there again.  Yesterday I watched in essence of what I would call Nazism when an elected official - a sheriff in uniform - use racism in slurred speech against an American Presidential candidate. Do not ever tell me that the GOP is a Christian based party ever again or use Christian interests as a reason to support the GOP.
This townhall setting is a complete joke.  Voters get to ask questions, that have been asked in advance... to the moderator... and can't be changed.  After the question is asked, the mic is killed and there is no opportunity for a followup.  The candidates can't ask one another questions either...

this will be like another dose of "expected" questions that Sarah Palin got!

I don't see how McCain changes the momentum in this setting.
Elect Obama, but dump Pelosi. Obama will need a much less poloarizing figure leading the House to fix the mess Bush is leaving him.
All you people that want to play the race card. Do your homework Obama is 3% african american and his descendants were slave owners not slave traders. Scary that we are now piking the most powerful man in the world based on race and charisma. God help us all because w/o God (Jehovah not Allah)no matter who wins this nation is doomed
This ranting by Palin and McCain is downright dangerous. They are inciting violence against Obama. If he is struck down they will have blood on their hands and riots in the streets.
Looking at these results... old man gasbag is probably chewing on a shoe string or pillow cover.

Are Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman and Chris Matthews the onl journalist working for MSNBC? All others, including Tom Brokaw, do their best to put McCain/Palin in the best light and continue to run the nastiest and sleaziest McCain ads with no Obama ads or positives even mentioned. Perhaps you guys are now owned by Fox News? Thank God for Keith, Chris and Rachel. As far as Chuck, why does he have this position. He is a McCain supporter and no political analyst. I think the American people are getting just as disgusted with the news media as with GWB and McCain, and Palin.
I'm tired of the attacks on Obama.  He consorts with terrorists, or he's a muslim, (like that would make a difference if he was).  McCain spent 5 1/2 years in a communist regime's prison.  Maybe someone should accuse him of being a brain washed communist sleeper agent!!!
This is to all the liberal bloggers above. Good luck with your tax and spend strategy.  I hope you all have a lot of cash reserves as your retirement accounts are going to quickly evaporate if the Democrats have their way.
Moreover, our foreign policy will be 4 years of gridlock and hopefully we will not lose what we have gained. Don't plan too much foreign travel.
Do I hear Jimmy Carter?
Hang on for the ride.
Maybe Obama will be a good reality check for Americans and 4 years of trolling the bottom will be a good wake up call.
We deserve who we vote in.
Let me get this straight - for two debates, several polls consistently disagree with pundits and say that the dem ticket disagree with the pundit pronouncement that the debates were ties and on a whole say that Obama/Biden beat McCain/Palin by 50% to 29% and your analysis for the disconnect is that VOTERS must be WRONG - they are grading McCain/Palin on a curve????  Are you kidding me?  Do the pundits not read their own blogs that are set up here?  The answers have been written here pretty consistently.

Obama/McCain was closer. Each had a closer command of the issues on an intellectual level.  McCain was his own worst enemy and was off-putting.  For all of his bluster about "suspending his campaign" to work on the economic crisis, he had little to say about how that translated to the broader economy or his economic plans - all he could babble about was cutting earmarks (about 17 or 18 million dollars/year) which seemed a bit odd in light of the fact that Congress just finished approving a $700 BILLION WALL ST BAILOUT.

Now lets talk about the VP debates, for every clip where Palin looks as if she is putting together two intelligent sentences, you don't show what the question that was put to her.  Because she either ignored the question outright - not in the sly political way of answering, but not answering that we have grown used to - but outright answering another question altogether - given a question about Afghanistan, and saying "I want to talk about energy."  That is unacceptable.  If Palin attempted in anyway to answer the question put to her, it was painful for the audience to hear as she babble through a series of cliches, catch phrases, and important names she had memorized that might be important to that topic.  Her performance could not be compared favorably to Joe Biden's.  And the voters graded her appropriately.

The voters have been saying that they want substantive debate.  The grades of the campaigns are saying, you need to come to the debate prepared, you need to behave courteously, you need to follow the rules of the debate, you need to answer the questions that are posed - the voters are paying attention to the substance of these debates.

The only liars in this case are McCain and Palin.
Palin is a conceited, smug, self-righteous phony!
McCain changes his tactics daily, either he can not make up his own mind....or he is ill-advised....by the lobbys he invites to his camp....or the poor man has slipped over the edge into senility...ELECT OBAMA!

I voted for McCain 2 times in the past. I will never, NEVER do it again. His disgusting & ugly campaign is embarrassing, and exactly what he said he would not do.His VP choice is even more embarrassing. There is no leadership, just dirty lies & panic.
Bartering for his life, a sage in a traditional Sufi parable admonishes a powerful leader in his day:
The first truth... is that you imagine yourself to be a seeker of truth. The second truth is that you only wish to hear the truth as you currently conceive it. The third truth is that you will only know the truth when you know yourself to be ignorant.

Whether it is Bush (who could not think of a single effor in judgment in the debates four years ago) or Palin (who seems to have no curiousity outside of her little world) or McCain (who seems to adopt as strategy the last thought to come out of an advisor's mouth) I have to say that none of the Republican side seems to have any desire to consider alternate viewpoints.
You people must have the brains the size of pea.  Do you not know besides the economic crisis, we are facing problems of a greater magnitude.  Other countries who hate us and what we believe and stand for.  It scares me that in this country 95 per cent of the people have the intelligence and brains to think for themselves the other five percent or certifiable or cannot think for themselves.  They let the elite media who want to elect Washington insiders influence who they vote for.  Democrats, believe in taxation, taxation, taxation, you want to know how that is going to affect your pockets.  Obama wants to do away with any captital gain relief. We have no good idea who he is or where he came from.  He has associated with Terroists for heaven sakes.  The war do you remember 9/11 at all. Well guess what if he is elected look out for terroist attacks to multiply.  Bush people get real he can only do so much and Congress runs this country not the President.  Are you people that dumb.
.
MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT --- OBAMA WOULD BE A BIG LEAP TOWARDS SOCIALISM.

OBAMA BELIEVES IN THE SOCIALIST GOAL OF "REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH."

OBAMA WANTS TO REDISTRIBUTE INCOME --- THROUGH TAXATION --- FROM THOSE WHO HAVE IT, TO THOSE WHO DO NOT.
OBAMA WANTS TO TAKE MONEY FROM THOSE WHO HAVE WORKED FOR IT and EARNED IT --- AND GIVE IT TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT.

OBAMA'S APPROACH TO ECONOMICS IS THE ""SAME OLD"" SOCIALIST SCHEME.
TAKE FROM THOSE WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED THE MOST TO SOCIETY --- AND GIVE IT TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT.

HE CALLS IT "ECONOMIC JUSTICE." .  IT'S CLASS WARFARE.  . THE SCAM WORKED IN RUSSIA ;;DON’T LET IT SUCCEED HERE!

Maybe we need a new youth movement by way of media journalism as well, because far too many of these media 'pundits' are failing us big time. We need some fresh air out there... Someone not afraid to ask the tuff questions. (My, how we miss Tim Russert) The media is so gullable, and so very easily manipulated...

I watched McOldman rant yesterday about Obama not being willing to answer questions the way every other candidate has been subject to... HELLOOOO!!! This coming from a campaign that has Tucker Bound keepin' this Palin Chick 'Tucked & Bound' ...This Palin broad isn't even accessible to answering questions. And no one in the media seems to notice that and/or is willing to call him out on that. McInsane realizes that if he simply says something the media would take whatever's said at face value. That's probably why McLame see's the American people are so simple minded.

We'll see who skates around the issues tonight when Mc4moreYearsOfTheSame get's his ass handed to him.

...And for y'all that don't know, Florida IS blue... If y'all knew what us folks down here know, it wouldn't even be a question. (We have a secret 'Fraternal' like organization down here that wants no part of the polling so as to know ourselves where we stand prior to November 4th, despite what the 'experts' say)

THIS WILL BE A LANDSLIDE VICTORY FOR OBAMA!!! All we Floridians are doing right now is passing the time...

Ohio, you might wanna take note. We've learned from two terms of foolish, regretful voting that allowed Bush to take the White House, consequently sending our Country to ruins. We're going to clean our hands with this administration and change the course of Our Country... WE WONT MAKE THAT SAME MISTAKE AGAIN!

{As an Old 'WISE' President once said, "Fool me once... Fool me once shame on... Shame on, Fool me... *sigh* Get fooled, ya' can't get fooled again"}.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08
Yup you libs nailed it!! Bush is the root of all evil!! Since McCain is GOP he is another root of evil. After all look at all the wonderful things the libs have done in congress over the last 2+ years, what a huge accomplishment it must be to running 19 points under Bush in approval rating!! Obama and the libs dont want to reach across any aisles, that is LIE ! The dont want any opposition at all, much easier to push the socialist agenda on society. MSNBC is one of the most liberal biased sites on the web, but for some reason I feel the need to come hear and all you liberal bs just so I can get a laugh...
