'That one' ?

Posted: Tuesday, October 07, 2008 9:52 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
Who voted against the 2005 so-called "Bush-Cheney Energy Bill" again?

"That one," McCain said, pointing at his opponent with his thumb.

Some people suggested that Obama's repeated references to "John" rather than 'Senator McCain' in the first debate might have been disrespectful, but "that one" seems a bit much.

Yeah- I was thinking, gee, McCain, why not just point and say, "The negro guy over there voted for it." ?
I have to say that if you noticed that remark I can assure you that the people in the audience, especially the African Americans took notice too.  That was truely an insult.
MCCain just cannot help himself......he cannot show any respect for Obama
I thought I heard him correctly...that was very disrespectful and I hope someonw calls him on it.
It's a shame that our potential president is not constrained by the truth.
I couldn't believe he said that.  How disrespectful. It turned Senator Obama into an object not a person.
agreed.
He was smart to refer to him as John, he is a college with him in the Senate.  He is no "Mr. McCain" to Obama, even though he is twice his age...
That one....sounds just a little racist?
I don't like saying this stuff but it's true: McCain is a jerk.  I don't think he cares about my family at all.  Stop calling me your friend, you are NOT my friend!
I am sure Senator Obama can handle it.  He is an adult, an american leader, and "one" of our senators
Talk about being talked down to. I'm black and I didn't appreciate that. Takes me back a good 30 - 40 years.
Is it disrespectful, or racist?

Next he'll probably call him boy.
Well that was rude and uncalled for.
I agree. It makes you wonder if Senator McCain would behave this way if in a confrontation with international Leaders... I hope not.
As soon as McCain referred to Obama as "that one" my husband and I looked at each other in astonishment.  John McCain's disdain for Obama is palpable...and incredibly ugly.
"that one" has a name, it's Senator Obama. I'm glad I wasn't the only one to pick up on that.
McCain with his thumb gesture and snide remarks makes him look unpresidential and Bushlike.
I agree I think McCain appears very frustrated at the reality that is losing this election. McCain appears irritated.
It is clear from the first two debates and the recent comments that McCain has absolutely no respect for Obama.  I think this has come across to the American people. And its possible that people are tired of this type of politics.
so distrespectful!!!

that is terrible.

argh
That one seemed a bit condosending to me. He could have chosen a better choice of words. Old fart
"That one" couldn't be anymore disrespectful.
By referring to Senator Obama as "THAT ONE" proves to America (at least the non-gullible ones that Senator McCain is incapable of controlling his emotions when he is not getting his way or when he's irritated due to the fact that he's getting closer and closer to losing this election to Senator Obama.  It was offensive and more so than not giving Senator Obama the respect of facing him as a man should during the first debate.

What a joke?
That one seemed a bit condosending to me. He could have chosen a better choice of words. Old fart
After watching some of McCain's stump speeches, I'm not at all surprised.  As McCain so eloquently said, "Eh? Eh? Eh?"
I almost think that it was calculated, a subtle hint of racism.  Would he have said that to a white man? Shame on you Mr. McCain!
I find McCain's comment of "that one" to be utterly disrepectful.
McCain is making me sick.....his disdain is disgusting. What a jerk.
He does not have respect for Obama..I don't think that McCain understands....I truly expected more from him tonight.
No doubt. What kind of snarkiness is that? McCain is trying really hard to keep his inner Abe Simpson under wraps.
Yes, he seems to be a bit on the edge. I thought that was rude and dismissive.
Sen. McCain's reference to Sen. Obama as "that one" was beyond the pale. It reveals his level of contempt for his rival, and his inability to keep his temper in check. As an independent voter, this officially turned me off from the McCain, as if the mob rallies of the past two days weren't enough. I've officially made my decision. I'm voting for "that one."
He's a real class act "that one" MC CAIN.
CARRIE DANN  WHATEVER!!!!!  WE THE PEOPLE ARE NOT CONCERN ABOUT THAT STATEMENT. WE ARE MORE CONCERN ABOUT THE SUBSTANCE FROM BOTH CANDIDATES.  MCCAIN IS WEAK WITH NO SOLID ANSWERS TO EXPLAIN HIS SOLUTIONS TO OUR ISSUES.

GO OBAMA!!
'my friend'
Anybody keeping count on how many time McCain says 'My friend"?
Obama is right on with healthcare....he understands that people can't just skip to another state when insurance companies are dictating healthcare on their policy holders.....I work in health care and it is imperative that we get "permission" from the insurance companies to admit to our hospital.......McCain is out of touch.....no knowledge..he must have a plan that allows for anything at anytime....good thing he isn't accessing his mental health benefits...
He does not respect Barack Obama
McCain...has no respect for young people...women...or himself.  "That One"!  wow!
This is a matter of opinion.  So I say since this debate has an audience of Undecided voters who must determine whether he/she will vote for 'this one' or 'that one' it seems fitting and rather humorous actually.  Disrespectful might be attributed to Obama's constant snickering during McCain's first 3 answers.  Chuckling is temporary, snickering lingers and looks childish.
I agree that it is dissmive. Obama is a senator and fellow senators should treat each other with respect. Obviosuly, McCain missed the memo on respecting others.
That'll get some play. How offensive. I bet some quarters consider it borderline racist.
McCain is condescending and at points saying extremely negative items such as"that one".  I am also tired of every McCain comment starting out with "my friends".
That was an a-hole thing to say...
Wave your hand Tom?  I can't believe it. ARGH!
Epic. Fail.
McCain has been disrespectful throughout this campaign and now he and is VP are actually out inciting violence and racism.  So much for honor.
Any bill with 'Bush/Cheney' tacked on the front of it would give me pause.

Also, that one?  Was that some kind of punchline?  Like, who has two thumbs and hates Bush/Cheney?  This one!
McCain is less condescending then the previous debate, but the angry old man stil can be seen.

Argh, McCain is the one who was wrong about Russia -- Georgia provoked the conflict, and there is debate whether Georgia is really a democracy. Itchy-trigger McCain, yikes!
It was incredibly disrespectful and also what they call "unpresidential". Makes me wonder if he does have the temperment for the position.
