In Indiana, Obama stays on attack

Posted: Wednesday, October 08, 2008 2:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- On his first trip to Indiana in just over a month, Obama continued to hit McCain on health care, an important pocket book issue for many Americans.

It was the senator’s sixth trip to this red state during the general election. It’s a state his campaign believes is within reach, even though a Democratic presidential candidate has not won here since 1964 and Democratic candidates have rarely come to campaigned this late in the election season.

Obama, who was introduced by Sen. Evan Bayh, talked about being asked during the debate whether health care should be a right for every American.

“In last night’s debate, John McCain and I each had the chance to make the case for change -- to talk about what we would do differently from the last eight years when it comes to lifting our middle-class and growing our economy, and restoring our prosperity,” he told a crowd of about 21,000 people packing the stands at the state fairgrounds. “We were both asked whether we believed that health care should finally be the right of every American. I believe it should. But Sen. McCain didn’t say that and when you look at his radical health care plan, you can see why.”

He went on to repeat his criticism that McCain was not being forthcoming with voters about how his plan to offer health care tax credits would be paid for in part by taxing employer health benefits and could make it hard for many families to afford coverage.

“Sen. McCain didn’t tell us about the studies that say his plan would cause 20 million Americans to lose their health insurance from their employer, or how the Chamber of Commerce -- which is generally not a big supporter of Democratic candidates -- said it would be a disaster for businesses,” Obama said. “He didn’t mention how it would de-regulate the insurance industry so they don’t have to cover things like mammograms or vaccinations or maternity care.”

The senator began an otherwise standard stump speech by mentioning the steep declines in the stock market here and around the world over the last 24 hours and the Federal Reserve’s decision to cut interest rates.

“This morning, the Federal Reserve took swift action together with other nations to stem what is now a full-blown global financial crisis,” he said. “ I support and encourage this kind of global coordination, because as I’ve said before that this is a global problem and it needs to be solved through a global effort. And I hope that this global response continues as leaders of major financial institutions and representatives from nations around the world gather in Washington soon.”

But while he noted the challenges presented by an economy in shambles, Obama also tried to strike a hopeful note, saying America had the most talented, most productive workers in the world and that there were better days ahead.

*** UPDATE ***  The McCain camp sends this along in response: "On Election Day Americans will know that there are two Barack Obama’s in this campaign. Unlike the polished campaigner, the real Barack Obama is rated the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, has voted in favor middle class tax increases and supports one trillion dollars in reckless new spending that will bankrupt our country. He may talk about the sacrifices made by previous generations, but Barack Obama’s proposals for lavish new spending during a financial crisis coupled with job-killing tax increases on small business demand no sacrifice – they simply prove he is not ready to lead.” --- Tucker Bounds, spokesman McCain-Palin 2008

Obama was feeling good too and Indiana was inspired!!!

The electoral map is changing. No more repugnant red hell - just more and more beautiful shades of sky blue.

Obama/Biden 08: YES WE CAN!!!!

I heard part of this speech on XM POTUS this morning.  He was totally Fired Up and Letting it Go!

I am very proud to consider him my next President!
Haven't heard squat from McCain today...maybe he is realizing that the negative attacks are not worth it. He should finish his campaign with dignity.
Discussing both men's health care proposals is not an "attack"!  Quit using such wording!  What Sarah Palin has been saying the past few days...that is an "attack"!  Senator Obama is pointing out differences between the two different health care plans!
Just heard that Obama will oppose the McCain proposal to buy mortgages with tax payers money. The plan in the bailout allows banks to take the hit and reduce the principal. McCain's plan calls for taxpayers to take the hit. Really, who is the conservative here?
Anyone notice how McCain left the building after the debate  and stopped speaking to the voters while Obama stayed behind for a good 20 minutes to speak to the voters. If that doesn’t speak volumes I don’t know what does. Also look at Cindy McCain how she walks around with her hands folded behind her back and doesn’t shake hands with anyone while Michelle Obama is very engaged and speaking to all the voters. Very telling when you think about it. The McCain’s are so out of touch with the middle class in this country it’s pathetic.
The old Obama is back. The inspirational Obama. This was a great speech today.

Did McCain's wife really make a statement today? Is that a joke or did it really happen? Honestly. Should Palin's husband give his two cents next? I am sure we would just love to hear their credible opinions, as if they matter as people. We should have Gumby and Mr Ed speak next. .  where does it end? Obama's wife is on Larry King tonight- she should debate McCain's wife- about proportional to Obama debating McCain himself in my opinion.
I see the folks on this site are still drinking the Obama kool aid.  You'd think this "empty suit", Chicago political agitator was the 2d coming.  God, you folks are such gullible idiots!
C'mon Indiana. We need you. The country needs you. Please vote! Vote for your best interest and elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden as our next President and Vice President.
Go Obama/Biden 08'
<<He should finish his campaign with dignity.>>

I wouldn't count on it.  I expect him to go down in flames with desperate mud-slinging to an extent we haven't seen yet.
McCain should be a REAL maverick and endorse Obama :)
Lets hear what the next president will do. NOTHING but roll over to big biz and telecoms and oil drilling and bankers with their hands out but when it comes to you and me start asking for spare CHANGE cause thats the only thing that is going to help the middle class the dems and puckers have sold the soul of the USA and have cashed in before all the dupes that vote for them Just remember in a couple of years when everyone is blaming the new guy its the same ole same ole.
The word should be Obama stays on message or on point.Think it's time for Bush's side kick AngryJohn to put the pit bull back on the leash. She is going nuclear. And it's not working for normal folks. Only working for the social rejects that cant except a good change. I think it's high time that America lives up to the standards that we have set for the rest of the world.  I know Obama can say this so I will. How in the Hell can we talk about Russia invading something when we went into Iraq unprovoked based on a lie from The Shrub and company.
Funny... no mention of Ayers from McClown and Plain while stumping in PA!  Hmmmmm wonder if their internal polls are showing the similar effects that Gallup shows... a three point uptick for Obama in three days!
I think McCain should again suspend his campain and head back to Washington to work on his new 300 billion bailout bill so Obama can sign it into law when he becomes president.
Hows MBNA joe biden working well with obammas message of change how about Iraq Joe any problem your judgement is questioned by Obamma how about it joe is he ready now your running with him? SAY IT AINT SO JOE.
all joking aside... does anyone know if Lie-berman has top teeth?
McCain.  If people know one thing about him it's his military standing.  Oh yea, and his self dubbed maverick.  Well it's a lie.  Read the Rolling Stone story: The Make Believe Maverick.  Online or Oct 16.  This man is a self-serving mysogynist whose real deeds and record certainly don't match.  This arrogant angry old man doesn't hold a candle to Senator Obama.
I miss Hilliary she had experience to handle the economy maybe not judgement on Iraq but way more on the ball than both of these jokers.
Putting Indiana into play !
McCain will not know where to go.

Obama is absolutely right to make health care a central issue.  This IS important.  It should be a right!
my sister and family live in indiana. they are democrats. and cannot wait until november 4th when, and to quote my niece, "i will finally see indiana turn blue". yes we can!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08-12 AND 12-16
Last night McCain said he wanted to freeze EVERYTHING except Military, Veterans (and something else)

That seemed like a hint that Medicare and Medicade could be frozen in funding

Just think, a few years ago, the Wall Street banks funded a phoney 'movement' to 'privatize' Social Security.
Bush, McCain and the infotainment industry seconded their schemes

Imagine what Social Security would be like if the Democrats hadn't stood up to Bush !!

Can there be ANY DOUBT ?
BUSH IS THE WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY !!
An evil, incompetent BOOB !
McSame will lose his Senate Seat and Gov. AirHead will be kick out of the governor’s house in Alaska. Alaskans are seeing the true Sara AirHead!

I think she is instigating radical conservatives to go after Obama…People in her audiences have said loud and clear “Kill Him” “Traitor” “Terrorist” I can tell the ones that are terrorists are them!

Secret Service please take good care of our Next President….”That One”

Obama/Biden

I hope you guys place this comment. Politico is the only blog that places all comments, and let the debate go between blogers!
What an awesome speech! Factual, energizing and inspirational.

Hey McSame fans, got a question for you. Do you feel a sense of pride and hope surge up in you when you listen to him speak? Are you able to picture a time of prosperity and equality unequaled when he talks about his plans?

Just curious, because as a former McCain '00 supporter I certainly don't, not even close. Of course it would require a bit more from him to actually say what it is that he wants to do. Hey McSame time to make your 14th house (or whatever number you're at) the retirement home.

Obama 08!!!!
In striking comparison:

In Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Bill Platt, the GOP chair of Lehigh County, twice referred to "Barack Hussein Obama" before John McCain and Sarah Palin took the stage.

What has happened to you Senator McCain? Racial baiting bigots are old school un-American. 21st Century Americans are voting for “that one!”

Obama/Biden 08: YES WE CAN!!!!

Who is the real Barack Obama?????

Turn over any rock or ACORN & you'll find his friends.

Don't believe a word he says.

Words?  Just words?
Obviously, Sen Obama will win this election. He's going to need all of our prayers since he is going to inherit a real mess. I also hope that once and for all we can put this "race" thing behind us and everyone be responsible to stand or fall based on their personal efforts.
I watched as Obama talked today that the DOW went from over 200 points down to even as he ended his speech.  By the time the Shrill Shrew of Alaska spoke the DOW was around 160 points up.  By the time her aged anrgy Sugar Daddy was done speaking the DOW was down to 80 points up and then sunk to zero.

Barack Obama gaveth the DOW hope and McCain/Palin taketh away the DOW's hope.  Heckuva job Johnny and Sarah!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Now that warren buffet has paid MSNBZZZZZ and GE billons rest assured they are in the pocket of OBAMMA didnt FAUX NEWS MAKE YOU SICK the first time now another biased news station ,ohhh but its ok this time they are on my side come on.
Everyone I talk to in the South Bend and Elkhart area of Indiana says they are voting Obama/ Biden. I see BLUE skys in our future.
dear Becky CA;

The whole bank to buy out home mortgages idea is in the "rescue" plan already. It was NOT McCains idea, it was one of the changes to the original "bailout" that Obama insisted on.  Do some research, and don't go by what you "hear".
THAT ONE!!!! How dare McCain utter those words regarding Senator Obama. The hatred and venom that this evil campaign is spouting is VERY Dangerous and most civil people recognize that fact. Nevertheless, someday, McCain and Palin will have to answer to GOD for the hatred and fear that they are attempting to spread. Just remember McCain that you are whipping up the lunatic fringe. So....be very careful what you and the nut job from Alaska have to say about Senator Obama.
STICK TO THE ISSUES OBAMA!

MCCAIN/PALIN 08
I am so gald to see that the great state of Indiana is in play.  Sen. Obama just needs to keep us in the mix.  I am a registered republican as is my husband and we are voting for Obama/Biden.  Actually three of our adult children and two of their spouses are also voting Obama/Biden  (they are also republican) We are still working on the the one holdout. LOL
Enough with the radical experiments to prove the crazy neocon theories. They always whine that it would have worked if only we had given them 100% of what they wanted instead of only 98%. If only besides controlling the White House they had controlled 100% of the house and senate instead of just 60%.  If only we had waited 100 years to judge their failure instead of just 8. Losers.

Time for a pragmatic grown-up to be in charge who will apply solutions that have been proven to work here and abroad for many years.
I am very worried about the tone the presidential campaign is taking. I truly beleive that the attacks on Obama by Palin are extremely dangerous and might resonate the wrong way in the mind of someone unstable. They are iresponsible and the consequences could be devastating.
Innnnnnn, the Blue Trunks...SENATOR BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!! Michelle as ringside coach.....<"Ok Baby, you got to get in there, get in and, and... kill him with kindness! Everyone expects you to be mean spirited. Don't give in to that temptation. Never let the Old Ham upstage you on your ability to show courtesy and respectfulness. Make him look like the old troll that he is. Don't grovel, but don't be uppity..lol. :) Show America and the World how cool headed you can be and how steady you are in a crisis. Demonstrate your ability to lead by being ascertive with your positive agenda and concrete plans to revive America's economy and end the Iraq War. Smile in a genuine way as often as possible>.

v.

INNNNNN the Red Trunks....SENATOR JOHN McCAIN!!!!!!
Cindy McCain at ringside....<shouting> "LOOK OLD MAN.....you promised me another new house!! A New BIG House!!! I only want ONE HOUSE!! That House! 1600 Penn. Ave, and make no mistake about it -- I will withhold all of your financial support and divorce your old A$$ if I don't get my BIG house! You got that OLD MAN!!!!?????

<suddenly calms, smile>....I mean, Ok dear???? <bats eyelashes>
On Wednesday morning, John McCain's campaign released a list of 100 former ambassadors endorsing the GOP presidential nominee.

Second on the list, though her name is misspelled, is Leonore Annenberg, currently the president and chairman of the Annenberg Foundation and widow of ambassador and philanthropist Walter Annenberg. Ms. Annenberg was herself the "chief of protocol" at the State Department under President Reagan.

If the last name sounds familiar, it's because it also graces the name of the Chicago education board where Barack Obama and William Ayers sat in the room six times together.
COME NOV. 4, INDIANA, OHIO, AND PENNSYLVANIA ARE NOW SAYING SOMETHING THEY NEVER THOUGHT THEY WOULD SAY...GO BLUE! THIS WILL BE THE ONE TIME WHEN MICHIGAN WILL NOW NOT HAVE EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO "GO BLUE".

GOOD LUCK BARACK AND JOE...GET THE MIDWEST!!
This time last election:  Kerry was up 10 points in the liberal MSM "polls"......nuff said
Yes, the Palin/McCain two headed creature from the Frozen North has morphed into something even worse. Now it has taken terrorizing it's own citizens to a more personal level, and a more sinister one.

[:{ WE are in serious trouble folks if John McCain and Sarah Palin win the White House.

What could we possibly expect if the wicked witch and the old schrew actually got elected. Increasing disasterous economic times and more world wars?? Not addressing climate change or the need for alternative energy? I think a serious disaster of Biblical proportions could befall this country if we have another republican administration.

No More republicans!

Apparently John McCain didn’t get Sarah Palin’s memo that “the heels are on and the gloves are coming off.” Had either candidate worn heels or removed gloves, it would have provided a lift to an otherwise flat evening. The buzz going in was that McCain might play the Ayers card – as in the GOP’s continued linking of Barack Obama to the co-founder of a violent 60s group, the Weather Underground. Nothing about Ayers, nothing about Keating 5. Can it get any more boring?

WOW was that debate boring. Neither of them answered any of the questions given to them, it was just the same old planless political babbling that we heard last debate! Can we start this whole process over with the hopes of having someone that is actually qualified to run this country?
McCain should put his country first...and vote OBAMA
I was there today.  He was great!  I canvass on the weekends in a very Republican county here.  The amount of support for Obama that I have seen personally is amazing.  We will turn this state Blue.  Thanks for visiting Senator!
Everyone I talk to in the South Bend and Elkhart area of Indiana says they are voting Obama/ Biden. I see BLUE skys in our future.
Tim South Bend Indiana

I see a new 3rd world country !
Okay, hoosiers it's your turn to make some history. Step into that voting booth and vote for change, real change, change we can believe in. Vote Obama/Biden
