In Indiana, Obama stays on attack

Posted: Wednesday, October 08, 2008 2:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- On his first trip to Indiana in just over a month, Obama continued to hit McCain on health care, an important pocket book issue for many Americans.

It was the senator’s sixth trip to this red state during the general election. It’s a state his campaign believes is within reach, even though a Democratic presidential candidate has not won here since 1964 and Democratic candidates have rarely come to campaigned this late in the election season.

Obama, who was introduced by Sen. Evan Bayh, talked about being asked during the debate whether health care should be a right for every American.

“In last night’s debate, John McCain and I each had the chance to make the case for change -- to talk about what we would do differently from the last eight years when it comes to lifting our middle-class and growing our economy, and restoring our prosperity,” he told a crowd of about 21,000 people packing the stands at the state fairgrounds. “We were both asked whether we believed that health care should finally be the right of every American. I believe it should. But Sen. McCain didn’t say that and when you look at his radical health care plan, you can see why.”

He went on to repeat his criticism that McCain was not being forthcoming with voters about how his plan to offer health care tax credits would be paid for in part by taxing employer health benefits and could make it hard for many families to afford coverage.

“Sen. McCain didn’t tell us about the studies that say his plan would cause 20 million Americans to lose their health insurance from their employer, or how the Chamber of Commerce -- which is generally not a big supporter of Democratic candidates -- said it would be a disaster for businesses,” Obama said. “He didn’t mention how it would de-regulate the insurance industry so they don’t have to cover things like mammograms or vaccinations or maternity care.”

The senator began an otherwise standard stump speech by mentioning the steep declines in the stock market here and around the world over the last 24 hours and the Federal Reserve’s decision to cut interest rates.

“This morning, the Federal Reserve took swift action together with other nations to stem what is now a full-blown global financial crisis,” he said. “ I support and encourage this kind of global coordination, because as I’ve said before that this is a global problem and it needs to be solved through a global effort. And I hope that this global response continues as leaders of major financial institutions and representatives from nations around the world gather in Washington soon.”

But while he noted the challenges presented by an economy in shambles, Obama also tried to strike a hopeful note, saying America had the most talented, most productive workers in the world and that there were better days ahead.

*** UPDATE ***  The McCain camp sends this along in response: "On Election Day Americans will know that there are two Barack Obama’s in this campaign. Unlike the polished campaigner, the real Barack Obama is rated the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, has voted in favor middle class tax increases and supports one trillion dollars in reckless new spending that will bankrupt our country. He may talk about the sacrifices made by previous generations, but Barack Obama’s proposals for lavish new spending during a financial crisis coupled with job-killing tax increases on small business demand no sacrifice – they simply prove he is not ready to lead.” --- Tucker Bounds, spokesman McCain-Palin 2008

To AIN'T STUPID,  Guess your name says it all.
Obviously, Sen Obama will win this election. He's going to need all of our prayers since he is going to inherit a real mess. I also hope that once and for all we can put this "race" thing behind us and everyone be responsible to stand or fall based on their personal efforts.

His so called personal efforts are already effecting world markets. The past few days the markets have been on the verge of collapse. I see what it's going to be like with him as president. Time to dump my stocks or what's left of my 200k and cash out my 401k and send my money to the caymans !
Dear God in heaven please take this man out ! We as a nation REALLY need your help in out time of ruin. Amen.
Last night I was so proud of the First Couple, Michelle and Obama.  Those on the platform after the debate moved toward them and were caught up with the moment.  Both the President and First Lady (Wow!!!!... that sounds absolutely wonderful) spoke, shook hands, took pictures and were genuine.  Where was John and Cindy?  Exit stage right!  Right back to their seven homes, 11 cars, fancy pumps and the Arizona desert!  Well not just yet, but soon, as in 4 November. Georgia is slowing moving towards blue.  Not there yet but on the way to blue!  My stateside home Colorado is BLUE!

Go Obama/Biden!
Why isn't Sara Palin being arrested for potentially inciting a riot? Does someone need to be physically harmed before she is questioned about her motives to play to the right wing weirdos to commit a crime? She is scary and John McCain is scarier. What an angry old man that is so far out of touch.
Obama has no chance in Indiana.  He will gain votes in urban areas like Gary and Indianapolis, but the rest of the state is Red.
All you liberals like to bash President Bush.  Last i looked the first 5 years of his presidency where great.  Markets up, job growth, etc.... Since the do nothing Democrat congress to over gas prices out of this roof, mortgage mess which is causing the economy to collapse, and don't forget the worst approval ratings for any Congress in history.  But as usual just blame it on Bush.
Hey, I'm sorry!!! This Palin broad is all hype. She gives a terrible speech- even when reading a teleprompter-. I aint sold on her skills at all. She has terrible delivery, and speaks like a 10th grade highschool girl coming into her own trying to find her way. She's a total idiot... The media has hyped her up big time... Yeah, people come out to see her, but only to witness first hand the 'Bush It' that comes out of her mouth...

I watched 'Morning Joe' this morning where Joe Scarborough said his elder mom went to see Palin in person, and that's the happiest she's EVER been... {I guess even happier than the day she gave birth to him... WOW!!!} Any wonder why his mental capacity is what it is???

And poor lil' Mika... I think she may have found her role model. This woman is actually inspired by Palin. I don't think I ever seen a woman on another woman's jock like she is...

Just making observations :)

NOW LET'S SEE IF THIS GETS POSTED...

OBAMA/BIDEN 08
i hope he addresses the ongoing issue of disability benefits being denied by the GOP Gov of IN..my mother was one..had disability for 12 years, then one day its gone with no explanation of why..it took me 2 years, 4 packages of documents (each time they said something was missing..only when i took pictures, and flew there to hand them to them myself did they finally acknowledge their error), and she still is only being re-imbursed for 5 months..thats 19 months that she had to take her 800$ a month and decide between health, food, and rent...i helped, but im still outraged by what they've tried to pull there..and the Gov of IN has "im saving you millions" on his web page..seriously, Obama needs to HAMMER this into them because the older voters that are likely not to vote for him because of his skin color might change their minds..
I see the folks on this site are still drinking the Obama kool aid.  You'd think this "empty suit", Chicago political agitator was the 2d coming.  God, you folks are such gullible idiots!

Compared to all you wonderful "insightful", conservative, fiscally responsible (seen the deficit lately?)people who will vote for the Dumb and Dumber ticket, you mean? But, isn't Palin "hot"? PLEEZE. We're excited about having a SMART guy in the White House instead of one that graduated fifth from the BOTTOM of the class. Had ENOUGH stupidty with Bush, thank you. Get use to it, Obama is the next POTUS!
I was at the Coliseum for that Obama rally. It was deafening at that place and standing room only everywhere. Article above says that 21,000 people were there, but it sure looked like more to me.

Look for pictures and more detailed analysis soon at my website:

ain'tstupid if you are voting for McCain then you are might want to change your name.  If you actually think McCain has any solutions and won't just be a robot for Corporate America, then there is a bridge I would like to sell you.

Milton Webb--if you are a McCain supporter then you are much more gullible.  Like those 56 million gullible voters who voted for Bush.  Fact is we will not be so gullible this time around.
McCain got Swift-boated in SC and on Feb 10th 2000 swore off negative advertising.

"A smear campaign during the primary in February 2000 here had many in South Carolina falsely believing that Mr. McCain’s wife, Cindy, was a drug addict and that the couple’s adopted daughter, Bridget, was the product of an illicit union. Mr. McCain’s patriotism, mental well-being and sexuality were also viciously called into question." - NY Times 2007

Cindy indicated it was toughest on their adopted daughter.

Mr McCain is a veteran politician who will do whatever it takes to capture the presidency...his own words from 2000 demonstrate his dishonorable nature.  Shame on you McCain...you should never have been a candidate for President of the United State.  Hopefully you be voted out of the US Senate by the good people of Arizona.
Tucker Bounds

Give it up!!  There is no way that what ever you say will change my mind about Barack Obama.  There are not two Senator Obama's.  Do the republicans think the American voter is stupid?

Find something new!
factcheck.org said:
McCain proposed to write down the amount owed by over-mortgaged homeowners and claimed the idea as his own: “It’s my proposal, it's not Sen. Obama's proposal, it's not President Bush's proposal.” But the idea isn’t new. Obama had endorsed something similar two weeks earlier, and authority for the treasury secretary to grant such relief was included in the recently passed $700 billion financial rescue package.

   *  McCain misstated his own health care plan, saying he’d give a $5,000 tax credit to “every American” His plan actually would provide only $2,500 per individual, or $5,000 for couples and families. He also misstated Obama’s health care plan, claiming it would levy fines on “small businesses” that fail to provide health insurance. Actually, Obama’s plan exempts “small businesses.”

McCain lamented that the U.S. was forced to “withdraw in humiliation” from Somalia in 1994, but he failed to note that he once proposed to cut off funding for troops to force a faster withdrawal.

Obama said McCain adviser Henry Kissinger backs talks with Iran “without preconditions,” but McCain disputed that. In fact, Kissinger did recently call for “high level” talks with Iran starting at the secretary of state level and said, “I do not believe that we can make conditions.”

McCain tripped up on one of his signature issues – special appropriation “earmarks.” He said they had “tripled in the last five years,” when in fact they have decreased sharply.

Politifact says:

McCain: "Senator Obama has voted 94 times to either increase your taxes or against tax cuts." -- NOT EVEN CLOSE (FALSE)

McCain: "1.3-million people in America make their living off eBay." -- FALSE

Palin: "We're building a nearly $40-billion natural gas pipeline, which is North America's largest and most expensive infrastructure project ever." -- FALSE

McCain: Says Obama opposes innovation, the electric car and "clean, safe, nuclear energy." -- PANTS ON FIRE LIE

McCain: McCain says the price of a gas tax "holiday" would be about the same as "a Bridge to Nowhere (or) another pork barrel project." -- PANTS ON FIRE LIE

McCain: "President Eisenhower, on the night before the Normandy invasion...[wrote a] letter of resignation to the United States Army for the failure of the landings at Normandy." -- FALSE

McCain: "You know, we spent $3-million to study the DNA of bears in Montana." -- TRUE, but failed to tell you that he voted FOR IT.

How many lies are those? And they aren't the only ones... so, John< YES, you ARE A LIAR.

YOUR DADDY WOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOU... but then, maybe he always has been. America certainly is.
McSame doesn't have a clue what he is going to do for the economy. He is grasping straws. Now he wants to buy all the bad mortgages. This will only put more on the tax payers.I hate to tell him its too late to do it anyways. Now the whole world economy is in the pit.Is he going to buy it up too!
Yes the skys are turning a nice shade of blue here in nrth central Indiana!!!
Obama/Biden  08'
don't care bout Mcloser because Obama is the first democratic to go 4 president and is the real change
"job-killing tax increases on small business;" when most people think of a "small business," they think of the mom and pop corner grocery, or the video store down the block, or like my sister's dog grooming business. oh no, tax these people - heavens forbid! what the good ol'lying and manipulating gop means by "small business,"  are those with many more employees; and even these businesses will save on the health care they provide to their employees. he also will give tax breaks to those companies who invest in creating american jobs here at home for americans.
Won't it finally be nice to have a friend of radical muslims in the white house for a change?
I agree with subgruvet, ok.Anyone still thinking about voting for McCain needs to read The Rolling Stone story(OCT 16 issue). Its not "Country First" it's "McCain First".This guy is scary we can not afford to have someone like him as our leader!!...Come on Indiana lets turn this state BLUE.
Obama should walk away with this as long as people actually get off their butts and vote, especially the young people who have the most to lose.
