Is 60 really possible?

From NBC's Abby Livingston
When a reporter asks the leader of the Senate Democrats’ election efforts if a Texas seat is in play and no one laughs, one has to wonder not if, but how big of a wave is coming.

Sen. Charles Schumer, (D-NY) head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, spoke to reporters this morning about his party’s prospects for increasing their numbers this cycle. He seemed ready to count his chickens before they’ve hatched when he said, “The wind is more strongly at our backs than ever before.”

For the record, Schumer said Texas might be difficult. He declared it “expensive. That’s the problem.”

Despite that, Schumer and the Democrats have added other previous-cycle crimson states to their target list: Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi and Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s seat in Kentucky.  He went so far as to call Georgia and Kentucky “even-steven races.” The DSCC put up their first ad in Kentucky today.

Adding to those states, he sees Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon and Virginia as likely pick ups.

He said that Democrats are also closing in on Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.

Although he refused to guess how many seats the Democrats will pick up, his stats and shrugs indicated that the prospect of the Democrats becoming a filibuster proof 60-vote majority is not outside the realm of possibility. He called the chances of such a scenario "better than they were two weeks ago."

Schumer is no novice to the Senate electoral chess game. He was also DSCC chair in 2006 and was a main architect to the inside straight that Democrats pulled off to take control of the Senate.

Schumer took also took the opportunity of an audience of reporters to add commentary to the presidential race. He was unimpressed with McCain’s debate performance last night, calling him “not empathetic” and “not likable.”

Schumer ended the press conference saying, "Politics always changes. You gotta be nimble.”

No, I don't think that 60 is possible.  However, there is a very big wave comin'.

So funny that the Obama campaign has such reach into the heart of enemy territory like texas.  I sure hope that the Dems work to unseat Westmoreland in Georgia and Bachman in Minnesota, two of the laziest slimiest varmints that ever infested the House of Representatives.

I watched as Obama talked today that the DOW went from over 200 points down to even as he ended his speech.  By the time the Shrill Shrew of Alaska spoke the DOW was around 160 points up.  By the time her aged angry Sugar Daddy was done speaking the DOW was down to 80 points up and then sunk to zero.

Barack Obama gaveth the DOW hope and McCain/Palin taketh away the DOW's hope.  Heckuva job Johnny and Sarah!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
THIS IS IMPORTANT

If we don't get 60, the Republicans can FILLIBUSTER
That will stop all work from being done

Please REMEMBER when Republicans were in this position, they threatened the NUCLEAR OPTION of ending fillibusters without 60 votes

IF the Democrats get close to 60 votes and Republicans try to hinder Obama's agender, the Democrats should IMPOSE THE NUCLEAR OPTION !!

SCREW YOU, GOP !!
The majority would be nice to get some things done.  But, please, do not fall into the same trap the repubs did and let the power go to your head.
that is SUCH an exciting prospect!  there have to be a lot of republicans who are pretty angry at bush and cheney right now.
Make it veto-proof,just in case the grumpy old fart and his MILF girlfriend get the White House.Thatway, whatevercrazy crap hisage-addledbrain comes up with will be stalled by adult supervision.
All I can tell you is that all of us working our butts off in Texas for Obama are also name-dropping Noriega. A lot of the polls say Texas is out of reach, but believe me when I say the ground game is strong here. I've seen it first hand. We're even mobilized in the reddist areas like Tarrant and Ellis Counties.

Big debate for Texas US Senate tomorrow night on PBS.

So, if nothing else, Cornyn is concerned enough about his prospects that he's willing to debate Noriega. That's a step in the right direction.

Also, Wicker-Musgrove is going to come down to the wire. You're going to have a huge black turnout in Mississippi. If Musgrove can peel off a fraction (about 25%) of whites, he's got it locked.

I believe 60 is possible. People are very tired of Republicans in charge and truly want change.

Also the greatest thing about Obama winning is that he can go back to the senate for two months and pass legislation he can sign as president!

I live in Cincinnati so we are a big TV market for highly populated northern Kentucky counties.   Until a few weeks ago Mitch McConnell was running "happy" ads talking about how he's been a strong leader, etc.  Lately... they've gone really negative, personally attacking Bruce Lunsford.  So his internal polling much be showing it a close race as well as the 2 other external polls that have it very close.

While Kentucky may be a historically Republican state... they just elected a Democratic as Governor. Steve Beshear (D) beat incumbent Ernie Fletcher (R).  Beshear won in a landslide with 59% to 41%.

I would just LOVE to see that weasel McConnell get tossed out.
Charlie, if you will start a special contribution fund for Texas I will contribute. I would give anything to see Bush humiliated by Texas going Democratic.
Yes! 60 is possible. Thanks to Bush and Cheney and their adminstration and 8 yrs of complete chaos and failure. Obama and the Clintons will have to clean up all the messes.
"Adding to those states, he sees Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon and Virginia as likely pick ups."

Alaska owes us big-time if they don't want to be known as the biggest bunch of political morons in hostory.
Mr. Schumer wrote a letter about the solvency of Indy Mac Bank and then was paid to release it to the press.

There was a run on Indy Mac Bank and Wells Fargo employess were on hand. IMB was then taken over by the FDIC.

I have noticed Jim Risch R-ID starting TV ad's here for his senate campaign. Could it be even in the red state of Idaho someone is nervous about the republican brand?
Joe Biden I wrote this morning he should grab a broom and get ready to sweep the GOP trash out with it. Then when done he can hand it back to Palin she can fly back to Alaska on it.             You know it's bad when the republicons wont put that next to their names and only appear as (John Doe) Gop . That was a sample name the real names have been hidden to shield the guilty.
Oklahomans vote Andrew Rice for US Senate....let's dump that utter slap in the face to intelligence and fairness Jim Inhofe.  Inhofe still contends there is no scientific basis that man has contributed to global warming. Vote Obama/Biden and vote Rice.
I hope the Dems reach 60 so they can tell Lieberman to go to "where McCain will chase Bin Laden"
OPTIONS if the DEMS dont get 60 in November.

Obama appoints Republican Senators to the Cabinet
Specter from PA or Collins or Snowe from ME, the Dem governors will replace them with Democrats.

The other option, get some of the moderate members to switch parties.  Who really wants to be a member of the complete minority party, when all the branches are controlled by the other party.
the angry left might get thier way. But you wil be crying in two years. Or maybe you wont, since you will be living on welfare, getting hand outs, and mooching off of the hard working americans in this country.  You all are pathetic. Stick your hand out and see how much you can get Democrats!  Gotta love em.
If they do gain a majority, PLEASE don't run the thing way left like the repubs did way right. They'll stay in there forever if they can govern realistically. The right went bezerk when they had the chance as "payback" I think. 'Course, my vote ain't counting 'cause I'm in Idaho....
Any vote for a republican is a vote for all of them. If you vote for one they all vote together when it matters and they vote for themselves, not the rest of us. I will never be able to vote for one and the younger generations coming up need to know this when they hear the lies from the campaigning men and women. If they are aligned with the GOP in any way they are against the majority in this country period. Don't get fooled by the ones who claim to be independents, like joe lieberman from Conn. they just want their cake and eat it too when they are going to put the screws to you when they get to Washington or the local and state government job.
I live in a very conservative oil rich area in Texas.  I am voting for Obama and have talked to others that are too.  Not one of us has been polled.  Also, on another blog I read an article from Tennessee about how many will not say they are voting for Obama for fear of what others will say...I believe Texas has a lot of those people too. My boss is a small business owner and he and his wife are voting for Obama.  He cannot say this to very many because of dependence on others in this area for business.  This may going on in a lot of places. Just some food for thought.
It is a sad day when good Senators like Susan Collins of Maine, who have served their state well, and represent the last of the moderate Republicans, have their Senate seat in danger.  I am a true blue Dem, but seeing a decent policitcal figure like that lose their seat will be a sad day for us all. The Republicans should be ready to tar and feather Bush/Cheney after all this is said and done.
Oh.... I get it, now McGramps  is aware  that people are tired of Sarah "N/A" Palin and now he needs a new voice to be heard in his campaign!

Well we know one thing for sure now,not only can Cindy talk but... Cindy is fluent in McCanish....

Sarah Palin should say some magic words, wink/blink, snap her fingers and disappear!

Just the Truth...
George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine.
A little over one year ago:
          1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
          2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
          3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
               4) the DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000 +
               5) American's were buying new cars,taking cruises, vacations overseas, living large!...

But American's wanted 'CHANGE!' So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes--we got 'CHANGE' all right. In the PAST YEAR:
           1) Consumer confidence has plummeted;
           2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!;
           3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase!);
           4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION  DOLLARS and prices still dropping;
            5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
            6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~ $2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE...AND WE SURE GOT IT!  ....

REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANY OF THESE ISSUES, ONLY CONGRESS.

AND WHAT HAS CONGRESS DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

NOW THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT CLAIMS HE IS GOING TO REALLY GIVE US CHANGE ALONG WITH A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS!!!!

JUST HOW MUCH MORE 'CHANGE' DO YOU THINK YOU CAN STAND?
As a registered democrat living in Maine, I actually think that Susan Collins is doing a pretty good job in Congress. Maine is generally a blue state, but most people are generally independant minded. While we've voted for dems in the past 4 elections, we have 2 Republican female senators (Olympia Snowe is the other). While I whole heartedly support Obama/Biden, I would have to say that not all Republican senators go in for the necon agenda. Both Snowe and Collins are on the outs with the Republican base, since they generally tend to think for themselves.

Obama will NEVER appoint a Republican to acabinet seat ! He is the most partisn politican we have !
that is SUCH an exciting prospect!  there have to be a lot of republicans who are pretty angry at bush and cheney right now.
happy, boston, ma

Yes we are, just as mad as you, but we won't shoot ourselves in the foot over it. we'll get him out and try like hell to save the counrty.

Bush is a idiot, but so is Obama ! as far as alot of are concerned they are one in the same. Neither are looking out for us.
John "Smiley McNitwit" McCain should campaign on a pogo stick.  Would make as much sense as he does.
The time of reckoning is coming for Republicans. Enough is enough. I hope they realize come November, not only will Obama-Biden win the election by a landslide, Democrats are going to win other seats as well while Republicans will finally be shown the door. The country is ready for a drastic change of leadership. We have been letting this Republican garbage rot for too long. It is time to take out the trash.
How many votes can Pelosi buy with another stimulus package at $150 billion? Probably ALL of them. AND, she probably doesn't need to deliver before the election, just talk about it! She's such a tease.....
I would just like for once see the DemocRATS take credit for this Freddie and Fannie mess that they created. Yet, Barney Franks keeps trying to blame the Republicans even when Bill Clinton himself says he blames the Democrats who prevented any regulation and oversight from being put in as far back as when he was in office.  I guess it is true, if the DemocRATS say a lie often enough the ignorant people in this country and on this website will believe it.
I live in Williamson county, a stone's throw from Travis, the only blue county in Texas. Williamson is so red, they made "W" their official county logo. The conversations I'm hearing are not McCain, but Obama. That's a shocker since Kerry's name was never uttered socially in 2004. We democrats are feeling emboldened to speak out in support of our candidate and no one is stoning us. A few close Republican friends, and my own Republican brother, are either confirmed Obama supporters this year or at least too disillusioned to vote for McCain. Hey, no vote for Mccain is a vote for Obama.
Yes, 60 is possible. Register to vote before your deadline--and then go out to vote on 11/4.

Finally America is about to step onto the world stage with some dignity.  it is a shame that for the past 8 years we have been looked at as if we were a third world country trying to play the savior of the world.  Bush/Cheney has embarassed us beyond belief and now is the time of reckoning.  Anyone who cannot see that we need a real change from the present and feels that McCain is the better choice can use my couch.  Let's restore American dignity and focus on the real issues of energy, healthcare, foreign polocies ( with respect and hold the bombs for the real terrorists), education and downright compassion for the heart of America, THE MIDDLE-CLASS!!

The democrats starting with bill clinton and their social engineering doctrine have just led this WORLD into the worst financial crisis in the histor. Wake up America, we need more procecutors and a grandjury to clean this mess up statring with frank and dodd. The last thing we need is to elect more democrats to congress.
Yes, "No more of this kind of Change" but all that alleged prosperity was built on a foundation of a house of cards.  The greed and hubris that was driving the indicators you cite was already in place and nearly had run its course by the time this congress came into existence.  The party was not sustainable.

Republidiots also like to blame the current congress for the mess that Bush and the previous 14 years of a Republican congress got us into, but very little has been done by this congress because Bush vetoes anything that doesn't favor making the rich richer and the middle class poorer.

We are seeing first-hand how much the Republidiots are concerned about anyone but the super-rich.  They make their hundreds of millions of dollars off our middle class backs and then expect us to pay for their screw-ups.
Go Rick Noriega!!!  I've donated to his campaign, but he could use all the help he can get to beat another Bushy - John Cornyn
