Cindy, Palin go on offense over troops

From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger and Carrie Dann
BETHLEHEM, Penn. – Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin went after Barack Obama’s lack of military service Wednesday, with both women making personal appeals as mothers of sons serving overseas.

“The day that Sen. Obama decided to cast a vote to not fund my son when he was serving sent a cold chill through my body,” Cindy McCain said at a joint McCain-Palin rally at Lehigh University. “I would suggest that Sen. Obama change shoes with me for just one day. And see what it means, and see what it means to have a loved one serving in the Armed Forces, and more importantly serving in harm’s way.”

Both McCain and Obama have opposed Senate measures with troop funding attached.  Obama voted against a troop-funding bill in May 2007 because it did not contain language calling for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.  McCain opposed, but did not vote, on a troop-funding measure earlier that year that did call for a withdrawal timeline, a position with which he vigorously disagrees.

Palin later suggested Obama did not understand the cost of war.

“Last night, in the debate, we heard again Barack Obama lecturing John McCain on the stakes involved whenever America goes to war,” the Republican vice presidential candidate said. “But wait a minute, may I remind Sen. Obama that Sen. McCain served our nation in uniform for 22 years.”

She said McCain understood the cost of war and noted her own son serving overseas in an oft-repeated line.

“God bless him, he spent five and a half years as a POW, and he knows the cost of war because he paid those costs himself,” she said of McCain. “And as a mother of one of those troops, yup, that’s exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief.”

In her introduction of McCain, Palin also went after Obama and Biden for changing their positions on offshore oil drilling at Tuesday night’s debate.

“What that told me is that he's not willing to drill for energy, but he's sure willing to drill for votes,” she said of Obama.

She also said Obama’s main strategy was linking McCain to President Bush.

“So last night, Senator McCain talked about real and pragmatic solutions. Barack Obama talked about why he'd rather run against George Bush,” she said. “That strategy is starting to wear pretty darn thin.”

*** UPDATE ***  Per an amended entry from Factcheck.org: On April 26, 2007, McCain did, in fact, not vote on the final version of a troop-funding bill after it emerged from a House-Senate conference committee.  But he DID vote "nay" on an earlier version of the bill when it first moved through the Senate, before the final version was agreed to by a House and Senate compromise.

Yeah Sarah... It's wearing so thin that America is not gonna vote for Mcsame on November 4th. Take off your rose colored shades and accept reality. You lost this election for McSame.

Obama/Biden '08!!
Just more of the same I would think Palin would be more concerned with whats coming at her out of Alaska where she is almost sure to be facing charges that may/will cost her the job as Govenor, any mayor jobs open oh I forgot she didn't do to well at that either....
Rather then getting Obama in office, why don't we just put the drugged out wino down the street in the oval office. They're both the same thing and have the same accomplishments.
I'm offended that Cindy and Sarah are using their son's as a political ploy, they are not the only mothers with sons and daughters in harms way, If it wasn't for McBushhhhhh all of our children would be home living the american dream, not fighting a war for George Sr. honor
Is Cindy still on drugs?

Hello you big dummy, the war WAS A LIE, SOLDIERS ARE DYING AND ARE DECEASED BECAUSE YOUR HUSBAND McCAIN AND GEORGE BUSH COULD NOT SEE THE FOREST BEFORE THE TREES!  MAYbe Cindy can tell us where Bin Laden is?  becuase although our Soldiers are in Iraq, Bin Laden is not there.  What an IDIOT!

What is she nuts?  There was no reason to go to war.  What kind of mother is she?  I forgot she is a flag waving republican who throws sanity overboard.

She is supposed to be the next first lady?  I don't think so, all the money in hell can't buy her the CLASS Michelle Obama has.

Many people of this nation have served this nation including myself and my husband is now in Iraq.  Although, that means nothing because according Meagan McCain; only her father's service count!

Complete garbage, these gutter women are beyond help.
The problem is that most campaign rhetoric given by the GOP is not factual, but they think that just because they say it that the people will believe everything they say.  I guess they think that we are to dumb to not believe everything they say.  George Bush was good at this also.
Gawd!  I can't believe he's got his wife lying for him now too - and then to take advantage of mothers who are sacrificing their kids for political gain - that's is beyond wrong.  The reason Obama didn't vote is because he wants your sons home.
Give me a break!  You can say the same thing regarding McCain because he won’t sign anything with a timeline and Obama won’t sign anything unless a timeline was specified. The spin is out of control.

Frankly if these two ladies would actually think they would come to the conclusion that their sons would be coming home a lot faster under Obama as President!

Oh that’s right they feel it isn’t a victory.  You want to lose more Americans over the word victory.  General Petraeus said it will be almost impossible to declare victory in Iraq.  But wait a minute – Bush already did claim victory – “Mission Accomplished”.
Before the homewrecker and the Winking Wonder get too carried away on who cares about the troops, they should note that the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Against the War graded Barack Obama with a B and John, "I care about the troops except when it comes to voting to support them" McCain with a D.
This isn't intended to be a "brag" or "holier than thou" comment, but my family has been in America since 1684 and a member of my family has fought, bled and some have died in every war this nation has fought.  We have a staunch record of standing up for this nation right up to the present day.  Let me say this: Sen. McCain, Cindy McCain and Gov. Palin DO NOT in ANY way represent the veterans of my family. My august and patrician linage believes that FDR was the GREATEST commander-in-chief we have ever served and that Bush and Cheney are the absolute worst. We believe Mr. McCain will bring nothing but more death and dishonor to our nation. Senators Obama and Biden will restore our nation and bring us back to a position of honor and respect.

Way to target those low information voters! Repeat it enough and it has to be true.
