McCain vs. Obama: Back-and-forth

Posted: Thursday, October 09, 2008 9:12 AM by Carrie Dann

The New York Times notes that McCain raced through the economic portion of his stump speech to get to the main portion of it -- which was blasting Obama. “‘Who is the real Senator Obama?’ Mr. McCain asked in an increasingly sharp tone in Ohio, as Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska stood to his side. ‘Is he the candidate who promises to cut middle-class taxes, or the politician who voted to raise middle-class taxes? Is he the candidate who talks about regulation or the politician who took money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and turned a blind eye as they ran our economy into a ditch?’”

Video: John McCain says that his experience in government and life would make him a more reliable leader for America, and a better commander in chief.

“Mr. McCain has never been comfortable talking about the economy, and in these final weeks of his nearly two-year, second-time quest of the presidency, with polls showing him losing increasing ground to Mr. Obama, Mr. McCain and his advisers have made the calculation that negative attacks will move at least some voters. Certainly those attacks pump up crowds on the campaign trail, where it is the sharp criticism of Mr. Obama, rather than Mr. McCain’s once-over comments on the economy, that draw the biggest, loudest response from the conservative and almost all-white crowds that come to see Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin.”

A separate Times article notices that Obama began his speech yesterday with some pessimistic observations before coming around to the optimism. “Mr. Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, told thousands of people at a rally here that America was ‘at a moment of great uncertainty.’ He used the words ‘significant drop,’ ‘anxiety,’ ‘crisis’ and ‘worse’ all in his second sentence. He explained why the credit markets were frozen, and in plainspoken language described how automobile plants were closing because people could not get car loans, how savings for college and retirement were ‘disappearing.’”

More: “In short, Mr. Obama continues to promise that everything will get better once he is president, but does not explain how his programs and governing philosophy will adjust to new economic realities. He said Wednesday that Americans needed to unite to avoid “a dark and painful recession,” even though many economists say that a recession has already begun, and that pain may be inevitable.”

"McCain returned to the campaign trail yesterday with new emphasis on a domestic agenda that appeared designed in part to address the concerns of white women, a crucial voting bloc that has moved steadily in recent weeks toward his rival, Barack Obama," the Boston Globe writes. "After his second debate with Obama on Tuesday night, McCain and running mate Sarah Palin held events in Pennsylvania and Ohio where he stressed healthcare and homeownership - both issues that women, especially independent white women, have cited as important in their choice of a candidate." Obama, meanwhile, has been running ads focused on health care and targeting McCain.

The debate was the 10th most watched of all time and the most watched since 1992.

The McCain campaign still isn’t putting any real money behind its Ayers hit on Obama. It has released a Web video instead.

Karl Rove has his take on the debate and the post-debate environment: "Each faces a big challenge. Mr. McCain's is that events have tilted the field towards Mr. Obama. To win, Mr. McCain must demonstrate he stands for responsible conservative change, while portraying Mr. Obama as an out-of-the-mainstream liberal not ready to be president. Mr. Obama's test is that voters haven't shaken deep concerns about his lack of qualifications. Having accomplished virtually nothing in his three years in the Senate except to win the Democratic nomination, Mr. Obama must show he is up to the job. Voters like him, conditions favor him, yet he has not closed the sale. He may be approaching the finish line with that mixture of lassitude and insouciance he displayed in the spring against Mrs. Clinton.”

“But here's a warning sign for Mr. Obama. Of recent candidates, only Michael Dukakis in 1988 has had a larger percentage of voters tell pollsters they believe he lacks the necessary qualifications to be president."

I would guess that it's because he is ashamed of the attacks.  If he puts real money behind them, then it legitimizes his involvement in dirty politics -- the kind that he said he would refuse to use in this campaign.

Here is Gov Sarah Palin 'pallin' around with anti-American group in Alaska.

What's the difference between a Palin rally and a Lynch Mob?   .........Lipstick
McCain has taken some recent criticism for appearing confused and even lost on stage. About a week ago, he reportedly had trouble finding his way off stage. And at this last debate, he seemingly didn't remember he wasn't in the military anymore, and appeared quite dazed and confused for a long moment afterwards.

And now we learn, after being in a general election campaign against Obama all summer, that he doesn't even know who Obama is?

Wow - now that's confused.
mccain:  If you don't know who Obama is by now,  "after he whipped your ass in both debates,"" let me explain it to you in Straight Talk  "He is the Next President of the United States of America.
Well Thanks to Obama and his friends, frank and Dodd, they managed to create a economic crisis to try and win this election, but it back fired on them and has now caused a global crisis. The markets tell all how a Obama administration will be.
"'Who is the real Senator Obama?' Mr. McCain asked in an increasingly sharp tone in Ohio.>>

He's our next president, Johnny!  Surely, you can read the writing on the wall, no?
To see Cindy McBush looking all quipy dollish as she made her statement about Obama yesterday was disgusting. She was playing up the innocent housewife mother role. The McCain Campaign is doing one thing at this point. The are making the Bush Campaigns almost look honorable. McBush is so uncomfortable with the role that his campaign has placed him in that is why he is so bitter and angry. He has become like a sock puppet. His campaign is running him for him to say " My Fellow Prisoners ". Shows how shook he really is The Wally Gator Smile between talking points is gone. I almost feel sorry for him because he was expecting a cake walk to glory. The sad part is The Maverick Character that he claimed to be is no more. No he is reduced to being an Angry , Mean , Nasty ,Shell of the man he once claimed to be.  Very sad indeed run by his campaign and not vice versa shows what his adminstration would be like. Folks showing up to his rallies to see Palin and as soon as he begins speaking folks walk out. Tells you that she is nothing more than a piece of pit bull fluff.
Why does McCain have to point out Obama's relationship with Ayers? Why do the major networks and cable news networks avoid talking about Obama's past associates?
It's obvious, if they talk about Ayers, Wright, Acorn and others everyone will see a pattern in Obama's relationships and affiliations? Oh my gosh, if everyday Americans actually know the truth, it would be disasterous for Obama. This comment will never see the light of day because it is unfavorable to Obama.

I'm sure that Mr. Rove must LOVE the way his protege has been running McCain's campaign, using the same fear and smear attacks that doomed McCain in 2000.  He must be proud.

Obama/Biden '08!

I cant see where McCain is comfortable talking about anything, not the economy, not our foreign policy, not
health care, not social security and medicare and medicade. It looks like he just wants to sit in the whitehouse and be a pretend president just like Bush.
I know the negative campaign was on the stump, but it was not as incitful as over the last few days, maybe someone told them they were on the verge of being arrested for inciting riots and for hate crimes.
Sara Palin had a look on her face yesterday that makes me think she may know they are playing for for a
fool, she didnt look so power crazed. I think it is dawning on her that she will soon be discarded as
toxic waste.

Obama/Biden

"the sharp criticism of Mr. Obama, rather than Mr. McCain’s once-over comments on the economy, that draw the biggest, loudest response from the conservative and almost all-white crowds that come to see Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin.”

This is the part that sends a chill down my spine. It's 2008, yet there's still a portion of Americans who harbor the hatred of the 1950s. And they're being riled up by at least one candidate who calls herself a Christian. Republican rallies look like a gathering of the Ku Klux Klan. Frightening indeed.
Hope got left in the dirt. All Obama can do now is tell us how TERRIBLE our lives are. Things are rough for sure. But, your negative message, Obama, scares people. We may cause some bank runs with your negativity. So, shut up.
Who is the real Barack Obama?

*He's only been in the public eye for 4 years.

*He's only written TWO books about himself. Just two!

*He's only a US Senator - I don't even know what a Senator IS!

*He was only in the State Senate for 8 years - hell, I was in high school longer than that!

*He's only given interviews to every major television network. But what about the networks that aren't on TV?

*He's only participated in 23 debates - heck, McCain has been in more debates than that with himself.

*He's only raised more money than any candidate in history. But why not 10 times more?

*He's only attracted larger crowds than any candidate in history. Terrorists are always popular.

*He's only the most popular candidate WORLD wide... on Earth - but what about on OTHER planets??? No one knows him!

*He's only answered every single question about Rezko and Ayers that's ever been asked of him. But what about questions that haven't even been asked yet?! How come he hasn't answered those?!

I'm sorry, but this guy is a totally unknown quantity. Now Sarah Palin, on the other hand, I can relate to her. Sure, I just heard about her a few weeks ago; and sure, she may have only given a few interviews; and sure, she may be married to someone who is a member of a party that advocates the secession of AK from the United States; and sure, she is refusing to cooperate in an investigation of her abuse of power.... but she's an all American gal who I can relate to.

And quit trying to bring race into this! Just because I consider Palin to be "one of us" (even though I don't know Jack shit about her) and just because I feel like "Barack-Hussein-BoogeyMan-Terrorist-Baby-Kitten-Eater-Scary-Black-Man-Obama" is "not like me"... that has nothing to do with xenophobia or racism. Nope, nothing at all. I'm just a good ole fashion patriot.

Gosh, quit playing the race card you liberals!
John McCain has sold his soul to the devil in order to try to win this presidency.  He's turned into an angry and bitter old man with no shred of his honor or common decency left.  What happened to running a civil campaign?  What happened to the Straight Talk Express?  Like Obama said during the debate - I think the Straight Talk Express has lost a wheel...or two.

McCain and Palin were in PA yesterday and once again, the GOP person giving the introductory speech was using Barack Obama's middle name to invoke fear and hatred in the crowd.  Neither McCain or Palin acknowledged what happened and clearly did nothing to prevent the words from ever being said.  Simply issuing a generic statement stating they don't condone this sort of rhetoric - after the fact - falls on deaf ears because the damage is done.  Their abject silence about the rhetoric during the rally speaks volumes.

Inciting fear, hatred and racism in order to gain votes in this day in age is simply reprehensible.  Who does McCain think he's pandering to?  Independent and undecided voters will decide this election - let us all hope they have the common decency to rise above this backwards and evil behavior - a vote for McCain is a public statement condoning this sort of rhetoric.

No way, no how, no McCain/Palin.  GObama!
Bomber who will you send out to do your talking today.Lets see is it Rudys turn,Hold my hand Joe,Mitt ,Kristal,Karl. Pat B.Moron Joe,or are you going to man up and do your own talking?Specking of Karl,Who listens to him?The man has nothing to say that would be called truthful, meaning full,or facts! Please let your Billionaire wife that you voted againest funding the troops also, and those shivers that went up your spine, you should thank Obama,I'm quite sure thats the most excided you have been in years, being with you know ,Grampa .I'm sure Obama has never seen a pair of shoes as expensive as the shoes that you wear,to most people that would look like a new car in the drive, not in your shoe closet.
John Mcain, has a violent tone right now,I would be scared to have him in office.
Why is it that FR does not post the neg blogs about Obama ????? or very few of them. But any Anti McCain blog is on here. FR your bias is showing very badly !
How can John Mcain allow people at his rally to threaten Barack Obama? Are the laws different in a campaign?
The scrutiny should go both ways and, unfortunately, Sen. McCain because of his wealth, family connections and reputation as a "war hero" has not been as scrutinized by the media.  I think voters also want to know:  "Who is the real John McCain?"  Why are there POW and Veteran groups against Sen. McCain?  Why isn't there a full disclosure of his physical and mental health?  Who is his VP, Sarah Palin really and where are her medical records that prove she is of sound mind and settle the questions about Trigg Palin?
I think we need to know who the real McCain is.  He's proven to be a liar, supported many domestic terrorists during his shady career, supported white collar criminals and tried to get them off the legal hook.  He's been nothing short of dishonest and it's way past time to send him off into retirement, where all criminal Reagan foot soldiers belong.

"Desperado" McCain and his lying ignorant running mate would only prolong the agony of our country's woes that he has been instrumental in bringing about.

Only Obama/Biden will bring honesty and integrity back to the White Hosue!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
With the state of our nation on everyone's mind this campaign season, I would like to think that our future government leaders could stop all of the attack ads and character assassinations and address the public in a constructive manner.  I am looking to be "led" in a direction that I can find assurance in.  Our economy is deteriorating before our eyes.  Families are concerned about whether or not they will have a home for their children, food to eat, and the forbidden word, healthcare, should they become sick or hurt.  I will vote for the party that brings it to the table.  So far I am unimpressed and unsure of where I will place my vote on election day.
Did you catch the look on Mehgan's and Palin's faces when McCain called the audience "my fellow prisoners"?

It was like McCain had just stepped in dog poop and no one was going to be enough of a friend to tell him so!
Is John McCain really the grandfather of Bevis (Bevis and Butthead fame).

He has the look and the sound (heh heh heh!).

He looks and acts like he may have some kind of mental problem. Like yesterday when he said "my fellow prisoners" at a rally in Pennsylvania.

He is really scary.

What do you all think.
John McCain keeps asking questions we already know about...His suspicions really show the
"Sherlock Effect" is not working...

Doctor Watson, "yes Holmes?".."has the bridge to nowhere been found in the hearts of the republicans?"...
Watson to Holmes, "well if you can find a heart there old chap, I can't see the bloody thing there"..."Bravo ", says Sherlock.

Dems please fight this ill vained attempt by Palin/McCain as an unadult faddism to nowhere.
We still are in the same boat and rocking it only makes someone get wet...
Keep your powder dry and the goal in mind...
From what  I have notice on these blogs is that everyone believes their candidate never lies.  Well NEWS FLASH no politician with a political career worth mentioning can be completely honest.  It just comes with the territory.  And for all the hypocrites that think they have to be 100% honest think about all the lies you tell in a day. Telling fibs, half truths, little white lies, embellishing just a little, exaggerating alot, or even omitting some of the truth is all the same & we all do it everyday whether we want to admit it or not.  What matters to me is the sincerity behind the person making the statement.  I don't claim to know either candidates fully on their political career or personal lives but I am a decent judge of character in my own life. And if I had to gamble my life on one of the two.  It would have to be with OBAMA.  McCain LOOKS as though he is lying in his campaign.  That sinister grin lets you know that he may not have EVERYONE'S best interest in mind. I am not rich and I am not poor.  I am the very definition of middle class & if McCain can say "My Friends" ten times in a debate ....why can he not say middle class once in the very same debate to let me know he talking to me?  I can tell you why...BECAUSE HE'S NOT TALKING TO MIDDLE CLASS!! That's why!
The only reason Barack Obama may not win the election is because of race. White America in general is not ready and the McCain campaign is really working the "scary black man" thing to the hilt.

A white candidate with this much momentum would be looking at a 20 point lead in the polls, but race trumps everything. I believe that the Republicans have an October surprise that will be bogus but introduced during the last week of the campaign to put enough fear in the electorate to take the presidency from Obama. The damage will be done with too little time on the clock to refute the charges.

Desparate people do desparate things and McCain will stop at nothing to win, even spilling Obama 's blood, if that's what it takes.

If McCain should win, America will be stuck with the souless McCain and idiot Palin to finish ruining the country. George W. Bush has given them a running start!
I am going to contact ACORN so that my 8 dogs can vote for Obama. I would say that if you take away the voters that are animals, dead, or multiples, Obama doesn't stand a chance!
Change ... Change ... Change!!!!!!!!!!

Not long ago I read what was, supposedly, a joke ... It said all the politicians running for president are promising change to the American people. We send them billions and billions of tax dollars and they send us the change.

Funny? Not really; there is too much truth in it to be funny. They ALL promise change. How about if they run on a promise of restoration rather than change. A restoration that would take us back in time to a place where things ran better, smoother and life was more enjoyable. Change? That, in truth, is what they have been giving us all along.
We USED to have a strong dollar ... Politicians changed that.

Life USED to be sacred ... Politicians changed that.

Marriage USED to be sacred ... Politicians are changing that.

We USED to be respected around the world ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to have a strong manufacturing economy ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to have lower tax structures ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to enjoy more freedoms ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to be a large exporter of American made goods ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to be an OPENLY Christian nation ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to teach patriotism in schools ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to educate children in schools ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to enjoy freedom of speech ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to ENFORCE LEGAL citizenship ... Politicians changed that.

We USED to have affordable food & gas prices ... Politicians changed that, too . ... and one could go on and on with this list.
What hasn't been changed, politicians are promising to change that as well if you will elect them.

When, oh WHEN, is America going to sit back with open eyes and look at what we once were and where we have come and say, enough is enough?

The trouble is, America 's youthful voters today don't know of the great America that existed forty and fifty years ago. They see the world as if it has always existed, as it is now.

When will we wake up? Tomorrow may be too late. When will America realize ... Most Politicians are what is wrong with America ?

I think McCain should ask himself, "Who is Todd Palin?"

Rove may have a valid point, but McCain's age and health focus attention on his VP pick. Voters are generally appalled at the prospect of Palin as president, and rightly so. Choosing her as VP was blatant pandering to the right wing, and nobody's fooled by it. By choosing Palin, McCain showed himself to be just another politician willing to say or do anything to win an election. Fortunately, his plan has backfired.
I am so disappointed in both candidates.  Sen. Obama seemed to offer a fresh, optimistic approach.  Sen. McCain seemed to be someone willing to take on difficult and controversial issues and work across party and ideological lines to finds solutions.  The promise of both candidates was a new pragmatic approach to governing.

But, as the election draws near, I fear they have shown themselves to be typical politicians, running win at any cost campaigns.  This after both had promised an honest, honorable contest.

If they can not keep their promise for a different kind of campaign, how can we trust them to govern in a new way.

For now, I am not inclined to vote for either.
Obama is attacking McCain saying he is going to give CEOs a tax cut of $700,000. True IF the Bush Tax cuts continue. But using the same logic,Obama is going to give a tax increase to middle class if he lets the Bush tax cuts expire. So why doesn't Obama admit that middle class taxes will go up if he's elected?
FR: Obama used the words ‘significant drop,’ ‘anxiety,’ ‘crisis’ and ‘worse’ all in his second sentence.

That's funny. That's how many people feel about having Obama as a leader.
Who gives a damn what Karl Rove thinks - the rest of us think he's a jackass.
Confident and Steady, Obama any day over Smear Tactic and Erratic, McCain.
When I listen to pundits and analysts, I frequently here Karl Rove's playbook. Who are these voter's he is talking about? The people surveyed show more committed to Obama than Mccain. A smaller number of Obama supporters "might change" their mind than McCain supporters. Obama is consistently increasing his share of his toughest demographic (white males). And, what is not recognized, respondents consder Obama a stronger LEADER, than McCain. Yet Rove wants to portray Obama's standing as tenuous, just like David Gregory, Pat Buchanan, Joe Scarborogh, Chris Mathews, Stephenapolis, John King! They all have a lens constructed from the Rove playbook, which is unable to process contemporary information. Except for Chuck Todd, none of them attempt to think about or analyze feedback from the public but instead "cling" to Rove's "framework".
MSNBC: Why are you quoting Karl Rove, a scofflaw who should be in jail for contempt of Congress, if the Congress had any respect for itself? I doubt that anyone in the general public gives a tinker's damn what this utterly discredited man has to say. He has been a chief architect of the destruction of the Republican party, which used to stand for some good things.
The McCain/Palin stump speeches have become almost entirely focused on discrediting Obama. The attacks go from innuendo, like "Who is the real Obama?" to outright lies about their opponent accepting money from Fannie/Fredie. A few voters could be drawn into this nonesense, but I think not many.

McCain is desperate; he is running out of his "Hail Mary" stunts, running out of ideas, and running out of time. I believe these attacks will accelerate as November approaches; they are already at a level unprecedented in modern presidential politics.  And the RNC will be beside him with their own tricks.  They, too, are desperate, and can be devious, indeed.
