Obama: McCain 'erratic and uncertain'

Posted: Thursday, October 09, 2008 1:46 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

DAYTON, OH -- As part of a coordinated multimedia assault, Barack Obama today blasted John McCain for his proposal to have the government buy up bad mortgages, saying it would reward reckless lenders and leave taxpayers to foot the bill.

The tough new comments were accompanied by a new television ad airing on national cable that calls into question McCain’s judgment in proposing his plan and says it would bring “more of the same,” a common theme of Obama’s attacks. The Democratic nominee said the next president would have to manage an economic recovery, and he asked the audience of some 8,500 people filling a minor league baseball stadium to ask themselves whether that president would be looking out for them.

Video: Speaking at a Dayton, OH rally, Barack Obama hits John McCain over his stance on the economy, and how he would respond to AIG executive's reported spa trip.

“Will that president be looking out for banks, will that president be looking out for CEOs or will that president be looking out for the workers, for the families of Dayton, OH?,” he said. “That’s the question you’ve gotta ask.”

Obama added that McCain’s mortgage plan -- which would order the Treasury Department to buy up bad mortgages at face value, rather than at a discount -- would use taxpayer dollars to reward irresponsible lenders and make it more likely that such lenders would “keep up their bad behavior.”

Returning to another argument his campaign has been making in recent days, Obama said that the way McCain rolled out his mortgage plan showed the Arizona senator is “erratic.” He said McCain’s plan would have originally required banks to take a loss on the sour debt, but that he changed his mind overnight so that taxpayers, not banks, would take the loss. Obama called the change the latest in a series of “shifting positions” McCain had taken on this issue and others.

“His first response to this crisis in March was that homeowners shouldn’t get any help at all. Then, a few weeks ago, he put out a plan that basically ignored homeowners. Now, in the course of 12 hours, he’s ended up with a plan that punishes taxpayers, rewards banks, and won’t solve our housing crisis,” he said. “This is the kind of erratic behavior we’ve been seeing from McCain.”

He repeated one of his favorite anti-McCain quips, telling the audience that on the first day of the economic crisis a few weeks ago, his opponent said the economy was fundamentally sound, only to say the country was in crisis two hours later.

“I don’t think we can afford that kind of erratic and uncertain leadership in these uncertain times.,” he said. “We need steady leadership in the White House. We need a President we can trust in times of crisis.”

Obama said the idea of having the government buy up some troubled mortgages was not new and that he had proposed something similar several weeks ago, but he stressed that such a program should be limited in scope and make sure the government did not reward reckless lenders by overpaying for the mortgages.

The McCain campaign responded that GOP nominee's mortgage plan “represents absolutely no new expense to the taxpayer, but simply refocuses priorities to more directly assist the homeowners who are hurting instead of greed on Wall Street.”

“This is just the latest example of Barack Obama putting politics above the national interest,” McCain Spokesman Tucker Bounds continued, in an email. “And his utter inability to be straight with the American people. The only thing the American people can trust about Barack Obama is that he's too big a risk in a time of crisis.”

The event at the stadium -- home to the Dayton Dragons -- was the first stop of a two-day, five-city bus tour through Ohio meant to focus on jobs. But apart from the comments on mortgages, Obama’s speech was standard stump material. He painted himself as a “president that works for you” and spoke generally about jobs, saying his plans would extend unemployment benefits, provide tax breaks for small businesses and start ups to help them create jobs, create five million clean energy jobs and two million infrastructure jobs.

Isn't is interesting how the McCain campaign equates the word "erratic" to "terrorist", saying that they are equally "negative"?

A hurricane can have an erratic path. Can it have a terrorist path?

McCain's behavior has not only been erratic, it's disturbing - beating the dead horse of "Ayers" and "terrorist" like a rented mule.

John Mccain is a man who justifies the means simply to achieve an end.

He promises a "civil and respectful" campaign to what we are seeing today ("attacking") and justifies it by saying "if Obama had done the town halls..." or "Obama is being negative using words like erratic"

McCain goes from being against Bush tax cuts (2003) to being FOR them; against offshore drilling to FOR them; decrying earmarks on "bear DNA" yet voting FOR that bill; continuing to claim Obama will raise taxes on incomes of $32K, when all neutral orgs say "NOT TRUE"; saying the "foundations of the economy are strong" to "crisis" to calling for firing Christopher Cox to suspending his campaign to saying he wouldn't be at the debate unless the bailout passed to showing up at the debate despite it not passing.

how is that NOT erratic? What WORD should we use?

Roget's II: The New Thesaurus:

Main Entry: erratic
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: Without a fixed or regular course.

Come on... YOU give me a good word for the actions John McCain's shown over the past 3 weeks...

Synonyms:
aberrant, arbitrary, bizarre, capricious, circuitous, desultory, devious, eccentric, errant, fallible, inconsistent, irregular, nomadic, peculiar, queer, strange, tangential, uncertain, unpredictable, unstable, unusual, volatile, wacky, wandering

ERRATIC fits... Wear it, John.

I like "unstable" myself, but wacky and bizarre are good, too.

The GOP ticket: Unstable/Unable

I think I'll vote for the guy who uses a dictionary and a thesaraus, John. AND the one who talks about the economy. And the one who doesn't base his campaign on insinuations and lies. The smart one.

Obama: THAT ONE.

Not you.
Sure Obama. And you're black.
Obama has never been erratic. To have been so, it would require that he would have done something, and then did something different. Seeing Obama hasn't done a thing in his life, he can never be erractic.
Obama is right we need a change in Washington and McCain is just more of the same.

For example, yesterday the McCain Campaign made its most outrageous charge yet by claiming that Obama is a transvetite, a crossdresser, a man who wears
women's clothes. Cindy McCain came out on stage and said, "I would suggest that Senator Obama change shoes with me..."

How disrespectful!!!!! ;) LOL
Putting Lenders First ... Mc"I Can't believe I'm losing to a black guy"Cain/aPALlINg
Hey Barack stop by and have Breakfast agian here in Boardman!!!!!!!!!!!!
We would love to see you again!!!!
Nice try Obama. Keep blowing smoke to cover your invlovment in the Fannie and Freddie Mac failures. You don't take lobbying money, except from big banks that you let get away with stealing from Americans and let their rich CEO's (Raines and Johnson) get even richer before the crash happened. This mortagage mess is blood on your hands Obama, and you throwing  out this garabage against McCain on a daily basis isn't going to cover up the stench coming from you.
Did you also mention that McCain is in early stages of senility?

It's obvious -- McCain is going senile. Senility often looks like erratic behavior that isn't particularly well thought out, or explained otherwise.

Want to elect a senile old man as President, in such a dangerous world??? I don't think anyone really wants that. Of course, there are some seriously ignorant values voters (bigots) out there who only care about abortion and hiding behind their religion so they can continue gay bashing.
The Republicans can do nothing but try to twist things and claim something about Obama, where it's McCain who's behaving in a way that "isn't straight towards the American people."

Stick it to 'im, Obama!

Obama/Biden '08
Hail Mary...incomplete.
Ayers, the banking scandals at the Macs, both ugly things, both things Obama doesn't want to talk about. Best to go negative on your opponent and hope your buddies in the media cover up your garbage.
Tucker Bounds is the slimiest worm i've ever heard. nothing but slander and lies, trying desperately to hide all the muck that McCain has walked into throughout his career.  McCain only looks out for the people who fund him, all you have to do is look at Keating, his current campaign staff, and the way his message has flipped around on so many issues.  The only person McCain has ever cared about is himself.

Barack, keep pounding issues and give the american people straight talk, seeings how the "straight talk express" lost a few wheels and became the "straight smear express".

President Obama ... it has a nice ring to it.

Vote for the guy with 1 house.

VETERANS FOR OBAMA!
McCain is exhibiting all the symptoms of early Alzheimers Disease.  Irritable, forgetful, prone to angery, stupid statements.  And that's just the start.

Have you been living in a cave?  These topics have both been discussed by Obama - problem is you actually have to open your ears and brain to hear.  Something it's obvious you're incapable of.  I sure hope you're a spammer and not an actual voter because you're beyond being low info - Yikes, dolts like you scare the bejesus out of me
MCAIN IS LYING when he says his plan won't cost taxpayers anything.  Here's some math for you numerically challenged:

-U.S. Gov buys mortgage of a struggling homeowner at face value from bank at $100,000.
-U.S. Gov restructures that loan to the homeowner to make it more affordable...say, revaluing it at $70,000.
-$100,000 - $70,000 = $30,000 that the U.S. Gov just gave away to the bank.
-Now do that with ~10 million U.S. homeowners, $30,000 X 10 million = $300 BILLION that we, the taxpayers, must pay. Nothing will be recouped. Zero. Zip. Nada. Zilch.

This is yet another example of McCain's radical views...except in this case, he's proposing something far too LIBERAL for Barack Obama (or me!)
McCain has the apparent 1st step of Alzhiemer's...

Sarah Palin needs to be investigated...

Cindy McCain - Huh?
When McCain was a child he would literally hold his breath until he passed out when he didn't get his way.  This man is not fit for the presidency.  There's little about the mans reputation that hasn't been rewritten to enhance his pursuit of power.  Read the Rolling Stone article "The Make Believe Maverick"
Sure Obama. And you're black.

--------------------------------------------------

I always wondered, is it hard to breath through that white hood?
Well my fellow prisoners...so much for the so-called insurgency working in Iraq - another McCain/Bush/Palin lie.

"Why do those who tout the success of the Iraq surge not mention that the insurgents were paid not to fight?  The increase in troop levels accompanying the surge were insignificant compared to the levels that would be required if the insurgency were to be quelled by battle.  According toPaul Craig Roberts: Paying Insurgents Not to Fight, "The real purpose of the surge was to hide another deception.  The Bush regime is paying Sunni insurgents $800,000 a day not to attack US forces."

McCain has two beauty queens (Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain) making critical negative points against Obama's Character. How does that solve the banking CRISIS?

I heard McCain say he knows how to fix the economy and he knows how to catch the bad guys and he knows how to WIN in IRAQ and he knows how to change Washington corruption and he knows how to reform the United States of America. It would be nice if he shared that information with President Bush (his fellow Republican), or with the Voters (who will ultimately decide if he deserves to be the next President or NOT)?

The old philosophy to elect representatives who make promises without any specific plans will not go over well this year --- IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID!!

PLEASE, both candidates, get specific about how you are going to help ME!

Thank you.
Sure Obama. And you're black.
*****************************
Fight Fire With Fire, what the hell does Obama being or not being black have any thing to do with anything? That is the most ignorant thing; ever.

Ayers has gone to several universities and lectured at Harvard.  Does that make them terrorist organizations too?  Ayers has made his life more productive and has rehabilitated it.  Who he was 40 years ago is not who he is now nor was it who he was when Obama met him.  Let's put it this way: If one of your best friends used to be a thief and you didn't know him when he was, does that make you a thieif?

Say you don't like his foreign policy, say you don't like his fiscal plan, say you don't like his healthcare plan- but don't say you don't like him due to Ayers because that is just assinine.

If that is really the logic you use, then ask yourself why you would like McCain who was connected to a neo-Nazi group or Palin who's husband was part of group of successionist.  now THAT is un-American.
You are talking about McCain to the media and not calling him "erratic" and "uncertain" to his face. Better tell Biden to drop that message he is delivering, about not making negative remarks to your faces. Then again Biden and Obama seem to be on the opposite page on a lot of the issues.
With 26 days to go, it makes me wonder if McShame  will get one thing right, poor guy, to come this far and fall so flat!!
Barack Obama is absolutely right. Mccain is losing
it. He and Palin are the slimiest politicians I
have ever seen.
I was under the impression the outrageous bail out
that was already given to the criminals was to
be also in support of the people in trouble.
I mean the true American people, not the thiefs.
Sounds like code words for "crazy." Obama is practicing rampant "sane-ism" by repeatedly trying to warn the American people that McCain is crazier than a tick.

Will the man stop at nothing?
Have YOU EVER smoked a cigarette? John McCain thinks you are evil, stupid, and weak.

What if YOU smoke now? John McCain thinks you don't deserve your job.
MAN OVERBOARD...WHO IS IT ? JOHN MCCAIN
I am so disapointed that McCain has not been a leader in his party in running a respectable race. He is "falling in line" to prove that he wants this so bad he is willing to give up his dignity.
"Seeing Obama hasn't done a thing in his life, he can never be erractic."- Bobbie B.

Yes, Bobbie, because African-Americans with non-Anglo names and who come from homes which relied upon food stamps frequently become U.S. Senators and favorites to win the American Presidency simply by doing nothing.  They always get the breaks in this country.
Joe, MN- I couldn't agree more.  I have been through the stages of dementia with my mother and it couldn't be clearer to me.  I have noticed over the last 6 months that John McCain is showing clear signs.  It is deplorable to think that his campaign is covering this up over their want (greed) for power.  They know that this will bring us a Palin presidency and seem to relish the plan.

I have also come to believe that Palin is a white sepremicist and McCain is going along with it to "secure the base".  This is sickening and will likely cause a horrible riot that is sure to include injuries and possibly death.  To make the republican party look like nothing more than the KKK of today is mind boggling.  To see all of the racist biggots come out of the woodwork makes me nauseous.  This is truly a sad time for our country.

On a bright note, I live in the redest of red states-Nebraska and have yet to see a single McCain sign, bumper sticker or anything.  I have seen several Obama signs, stickers and even some that have painted their car windows for him.  May good over evil prevail on November 4th.
When is someone going to realize that the Mac's are not a bank and don't make loans?  they buy loans from lenders so they can loan more.  They other distubring thing is that McCain's campaign manager was a lobbyist for the Mac's up until very recently, and some of you want let that go.  However, it has been thoroughly vetted that Obama has no relationship with Freddie and Fannie and Raines was not an advisor but you choose to embrace it.  Now you want to go to the fact that people who have worked for them have donated to Obama's campaign.  Wow.  Are we just looking for something to accuse this of.

McCain has been involved in keating, he cheated on his wife, his religious affiliation does not seem to exist, he constantly makes foreign policy errors when it is supposed to be his expertise, he owns 13 homes and a bunch of cars but he is not an elitest, one day he for something and the thing you know he is not.  When is someone going to say enough.  I liked this guy.  i probably would have voted for him in 2000.  Unfortunately, the thing that the Bush campaign did to him probably saved us in the long run.
C'mon, all of you- I don't want to hear about real issues or any nonsense of that sort .  I just want Mamma McCain to get that cleavage out there in front of the cameras more!  She makes a campain rally loook more like a Fox "news" segment better than anyone I know!  C'mon, wife # 2- get 'em out there!
Ayers, the banking scandals at the Macs, both ugly things, both things Obama doesn't want to talk about. Best to go negative on your opponent and hope your buddies in the media cover up your garbage.
Norde Sumners, Washington State (Sent Thursday, October 09, 2008 2:03 PM)

So Norde...tell us how this nonsense effects us? Your boy bush and mccain have murdered thousands in their foolish war in iraq and you are worried about Ayers? Thats ignorant
Wow, I can't wait until this election is over. John McNasty and his campaign is the lowest level of life there can be. This guy is so far out of it, I've even lost respect for him when he was a pow. The only agenda he has is Mcbush's and if he thinks that will work, I have a road to nowhere in Alaska I'll sell you stock in. Can you imagine how he would govern the country? Just as erratic and shooting from the hip as he runs his campaign. I don't know how anyone could consider voting for this ticket. His running partner isn't any better but, then she isn,t the brightest star in the sky either. His wife, just as erratic. She should look in her own backyard first . Mcnasty voted no on a bill to fund the troups also. Because that one had a timetable. They use the excuse it was just a symbolic vote. He would have still voted no on it because of the timetable factor, if Mcbush intended to pass it. Very poor excuse. Mcnasty is basically a hypocrit. He stated initally, he want the campaign to stay above board yet he has been playing dirty politics from the beginning. Obama has done nothing more than counter and stays on message at all times. Since Mcnasty has nothing to offer the country, he is like a little kid who, just got beat up. Well Mcnasty, take your ball and GO HOME!!!!!!
Did anyone else catch how whiny McCain was at the debate??  "If... if he gets more time... I get more time tooooo...."

For a minute I thought I was listening to one my 4 year old twins having a temper tantrum. "But mommyyyy.... if SHE gets a piece of candy I get one toooo..."

Side to all of those who are believing the lies about Obama and Freddy/Franny... MCCAINS campaign is full of lobbiests for them... HE is the one who was Mr. "deregulation".. so WHO's? fault is it???
McCain's new plan does penalize home owners like me who bought homes that we could afford and pay our mortgages on time. To help the home owners in trouble, work with the lenders. The lenders should reduce the principal and the interest rates, so that the home owners can stay in their homes. If they go bankrupt, the lenders will not benefit anyway. This is what is in the bailout package. For tax payers to take on this burden makes no sense. The lenders should take on this, because they were irresponsible in their lending practices in the first place.

All this nonsense about Sen.Obama being a terrorist should stop. He is a sitting senator representing Illinois and won 18 million votes from Americans in the primary (more than Sen.McCain and definitely more than the 140k vote that Gov.Palin got). Respect Americans choice. This is a democracy.
Every time I hear McCain tell us that he loves and supports Veterans, I get MAD!  Bad enough, he seems to think War is the best diplomatic solution; his 2008 record in Congress is abysmal.

IAVA, the Iraq and American Veterans of America, is a nonprofit, non-partisan advocate for our nation's returning warriors and their families. Our 2008 Veteran Report Card, based on the key veterans' legislation that came to a vote during the 110th Congress, grades every Senator and Representative on their level of support for our troops.

McCain  http://iava.www.capwiz.com/bio/id/192&lvl=C&chamber=S
Obama  http://iava.www.capwiz.com/bio/id/3181&lvl=C&chamber=S
Certainly there are Veteran Organizations that support McCain as well as those that support Obama. What sets me off is that the American Voters assume that since McCain is a Veteran, he would support Veteran Issues. There are four Senators that scored a D and only one Senator that scored an F. You can go to this website to see how your state Senators and Representatives scored.

http://www.veteranreportcard.org/
Watching the crowds at the McCain rallys are truly frightening...  They want blood - they don't want a leader...  And, McCain/Ms McCain/Palin are encouraging the madness...

Someone needs to remind Ms McCain her own husband voted against funding their son in Iraq...  But, no we won't hear that...

I fear if these rallys aren't toned down, some one will get hurt...  They're playing a dangerous game and bringing all the loons out of the woodwork...
McCain will lose because "IMUS" endorsed him.  Whomever he endoreses loses, kerry kinky friedman.  Best thing that could have happened to Obama is that IMUS doesn't like him.  Hey Bobby B., NY check your facts before you go spout your hatred.

Obama/Biden '08
Norde thinks that the Ayers thing is more important than the fact that mccain is a liar and a kook. Norde doesn't even sound like an American name...french?
America do not fall for the distractions that are being offered by more McPain campaign.  Things are steadily getting worse and all he wants to do is give the financial system more of our hard earned money.  Wake up and smell the coffee America it is time for us regular people to get what the wealthy has been getting for the last 8 years.  It is time for everyone to understand this is not a black or white issue...It is a green issue and most of us have lost our green...401k's down, 403b's down, 529's down.  In order for us to get our perceived wealth back we need to say no to McPain and yes to Change.
Stick it to them Obama, ha ha ha  If he is elected, thats exactly what he will do!! I am guessing most of you people on here feel you are not paying enough taxes. Thats good, because they will be increasing if you get your wish.
That's right person above, Obama is black, but better than that and in spite of that, Obama is the best of the 2 Presidential candidates and because this has become so apparent, McCain will lose in a landslide next month.  Can't wait! And by the way, what is up with those creepy McCain spokespeople?  They look and sound as if they're pre-programmed, sent out to utter the same old words, no straying from the topics, and then put away in their corner until needed again.
Read "Doonesbury" if you want the 87 or so names of financial sector lobbyist who work for the McCain campaign.
for this person

Sure Obama. And you're black.
Fight Fire With Fire (Sent Thursday, October 09, 2008 1:56 PM)

what are you implying by this comment?!?!?!
McCain's mortgage proposal doesn't take in to consideration the fact that many people have lost their jobs and can't afford their mortgages.  Will he demand that the government approve new loans without verifying the borrowers' ability to repay the debt?  Let's just give the homeowner another opportunity to extend the inevitable...foreclosure...at the taxpayer's expense!
mccain will change his mind in a heartbeat and a heartbeat away, palin is waitting .this is beyond scary fulks.this guy is all over the place.vote OBAMA/BIDEN 08 PLEASE.......WE CAN NOT CONT BEING THE JOKE OF THE REST OF THE WORLD.Oh one more thing compare cindy and palins interviews to michelle OBAMA'S, WHAT A DIFFERENCE. PEOPLE IN AMERICA, LET ME SAY THIS TO YOU, JOHN MCBUSH IS TRYING TO PULL THE WOOL OVER OUR EYES. HE IS A WOLVE IN SHEEP CLOTHING. WE HAVE BEEN FOOLED ONE TIME BEFORE, DO NOT ALLOW US TO BE FOOLED AGAIN. THE OLE SAYING GOES,"FIRST TIME LEARNED SECOND TIME EARNED" WE DESERVE BETTER THAN THAT. OBAMA SAID THAT WE HAVE BEEN DRIVEN INTO A DITCH AND JUST BECAUSE YOU CHANGE THE DRIVER DOESNT MAKE IT RIGHT. ITS THE DIRECTION WE GO AFTER THE NEW DRIVER.
