Obama: McCain 'erratic and uncertain'

Posted: Thursday, October 09, 2008 1:46 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

DAYTON, OH -- As part of a coordinated multimedia assault, Barack Obama today blasted John McCain for his proposal to have the government buy up bad mortgages, saying it would reward reckless lenders and leave taxpayers to foot the bill.

The tough new comments were accompanied by a new television ad airing on national cable that calls into question McCain’s judgment in proposing his plan and says it would bring “more of the same,” a common theme of Obama’s attacks. The Democratic nominee said the next president would have to manage an economic recovery, and he asked the audience of some 8,500 people filling a minor league baseball stadium to ask themselves whether that president would be looking out for them.

Video: Speaking at a Dayton, OH rally, Barack Obama hits John McCain over his stance on the economy, and how he would respond to AIG executive's reported spa trip.

“Will that president be looking out for banks, will that president be looking out for CEOs or will that president be looking out for the workers, for the families of Dayton, OH?,” he said. “That’s the question you’ve gotta ask.”

Obama added that McCain’s mortgage plan -- which would order the Treasury Department to buy up bad mortgages at face value, rather than at a discount -- would use taxpayer dollars to reward irresponsible lenders and make it more likely that such lenders would “keep up their bad behavior.”

Returning to another argument his campaign has been making in recent days, Obama said that the way McCain rolled out his mortgage plan showed the Arizona senator is “erratic.” He said McCain’s plan would have originally required banks to take a loss on the sour debt, but that he changed his mind overnight so that taxpayers, not banks, would take the loss. Obama called the change the latest in a series of “shifting positions” McCain had taken on this issue and others.

“His first response to this crisis in March was that homeowners shouldn’t get any help at all. Then, a few weeks ago, he put out a plan that basically ignored homeowners. Now, in the course of 12 hours, he’s ended up with a plan that punishes taxpayers, rewards banks, and won’t solve our housing crisis,” he said. “This is the kind of erratic behavior we’ve been seeing from McCain.”

He repeated one of his favorite anti-McCain quips, telling the audience that on the first day of the economic crisis a few weeks ago, his opponent said the economy was fundamentally sound, only to say the country was in crisis two hours later.

“I don’t think we can afford that kind of erratic and uncertain leadership in these uncertain times.,” he said. “We need steady leadership in the White House. We need a President we can trust in times of crisis.”

Obama said the idea of having the government buy up some troubled mortgages was not new and that he had proposed something similar several weeks ago, but he stressed that such a program should be limited in scope and make sure the government did not reward reckless lenders by overpaying for the mortgages.

The McCain campaign responded that GOP nominee's mortgage plan “represents absolutely no new expense to the taxpayer, but simply refocuses priorities to more directly assist the homeowners who are hurting instead of greed on Wall Street.”

“This is just the latest example of Barack Obama putting politics above the national interest,” McCain Spokesman Tucker Bounds continued, in an email. “And his utter inability to be straight with the American people. The only thing the American people can trust about Barack Obama is that he's too big a risk in a time of crisis.”

The event at the stadium -- home to the Dayton Dragons -- was the first stop of a two-day, five-city bus tour through Ohio meant to focus on jobs. But apart from the comments on mortgages, Obama’s speech was standard stump material. He painted himself as a “president that works for you” and spoke generally about jobs, saying his plans would extend unemployment benefits, provide tax breaks for small businesses and start ups to help them create jobs, create five million clean energy jobs and two million infrastructure jobs.

So ... and the Republicans are now all for McCain newest impulsive decision ? Buying all 'bad' mortgages at face value with tax payer money ? The Republicans are the whores of Washington power. No Grand Old Party - Grouchy Old Prostitute, I'd say.
THE NERVE OF CINDY MCBUSH TO COME OUT AND SAY WHAT SHE DID ABOUT OBAMA. CINDY WAS THE DRUG ADDICT AND SHE LOOKS AS IF SHE NEEDS A FIX NOW LOL
McCain is erratic.  This is not the McCain of 2000', it's the McCain being led around by his handlers and Rove Theory.  His disconnect on the economy is horrifying, just as bad as the "stay in Iraq until victory" slogan.  Sometimes time passes you by and this is the case with McCain.  Obama/Biden 08' to save our country.
Cindy McCain showed her true colors recently calling the election the dirtiest in American history.  Hey Cindy, who started the attacks - Duh... the McCain Campagain - Obama is just responding to the untruths unleashed by the McCain Camp - I can't believe your husband chose a woman who's husband said Alaska should seceed from the US and he has not use for the American Government - Says a lot about both your husband's judgement in selecting Palin (who in my opinion only selected her because she wears skirts and not by any means that she is quailfied) and Palin's judgement in selecting a husband.
I just found this exposure on Mccain. Mccaain, Elected to the House in 1982 and at a time when he was on the board of Singlaub's council. This council was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America.  McCain was among Republicans on Capitol Hill expressing support for the Contras, a CIA-organized guerrilla force in Central America. In 1984, Congress cut off CIA funds for the Contras.

Months before the cutoff, top Reagan administration officials ramped up a secret White House-directed supply network and put National Security Council aide Oliver North in charge of running it. The goal was to keep the Contras operational until Congress could be persuaded to resume CIA funding.

Singlaub's private group became the public cover for the White House operation.

Secretly, Singlaub worked with North in an effort to raise millions of dollars from foreign governments.

McCain has said previously he resigned from the council in 1984 and asked in 1986 to have his name removed from the group's letterhead.
The McCain campaign is appealing to all the hate mongers.  Look at the people coming out of the woodwork yelling "terrorist", "off with his head" , "kill him"and one of the earlier comment on this page "and you're black".

I have news for the people that think this way,  there's many more intelligent people than their are ignorant people like you.  So enjoy your hate speach for another month until McCain loses badly.
There was a time when I REALLY wouldn"t have been concerned which candidate would have been voted into office (I'm a staunch idependent!), until McCain picked Palin as his running mate, and I began hearing the BS come out of Mac's mouth (and his campaign-you know, the one that was NOT going to be negative).
We just spent a trillion dollars on bailing out the bad mortgages in this country. At last look, both Obama and McCain voted 'aye' on this small matter. Obama is now arguing about a few billion more here and there? Laughable.
The Horse Is Out Of The Barn
*********************

this is mere stupidity on your part, "Horse".  a few Billion???? No, a few billion would equate to something under 10B dollars... not 300B that McClown wants to put on the taxpayer's plate!!

Next time you look at things crumbling around you, than this administration and McClown... who by the way, is willing to spend 10-12B per month for the next 100 years in a country that has an annual surplus!

Repugs are pretty slow, but it's been over 7 years now so let me explain this in simpler terms...

some of the money we pay as US citizens, ie taxes... isn't going into our economy... it's going into Iraq's economy.

In other words... McCain is so lame... he's against helping out fellow americans, including the homeless, poor, etc... but he's all about pumping money into a foreign country because OIL.  Money that is being spent on their infrastructure, electrical grid, schools, etc... as well as money used to pay their radical "clerics"!!

Would someone please explain how that makes sense?  How a politian (who you support), would rather continue wasting money in a country that has a surplus and not wanting to give those dollars to US citizens struggling everyday to survive?  How is that patriotic?
Sure Obama. And you're black.
Fight Fire With Fire (Sent Thursday, October 09, 2008 1:56 PM)

Huh?  What does that mean?
McCain is erractic, now I also see that he is blaming the Dems for the crisis this mess was a long time in the making given the deregulation of the CURRENT REPUB ADMINISTRATION, but once agin he has no solution so throw out a wacko plan have the government purchase homes at "face Value"  that sounds fiscally responsible...NOT.. and Im sure that most Republicans would love a further extension of BIG Goernment.  John you make no sense... You are and have been erratic.  Time for somebody that is thinking and not reacting.

Suz Independent for Obama/Biden, Western NY
Seems that lately, the crowds that McCain and Palin attract are so angry and hateful these days. Both McCain and Palin seem to be feeding off the hate.  Things have gotten so bad that I guess McCain can only attract hatemongers.
McCain=Keating 5, voted against troop funding
Palin=Sleeping with the Enemy, Todd Palin=Successionist Party member, which leader promotes Deomestic terrorist against America
Bill Ayers and Barack Obama on Board of Annenberg Education Challenge

Annenberg= funder of the Annenberg Challenge, Repubican and Supporter of John McCain

McCain/Palin = Beneficiaries of Domestic Terrorist backers and Hypocrits

Nice try.  You fail.  Considering his record is public record, all your post shows is how dumb you truly are.
Obama should go one step further. McCain is not only erratic and uncertain; he old and senile!
Too bad McCain wasn't man enough to launch any of these incediary attacks to Obama's face.  I guess he'll just hide behind the ladies with that.  Barack don't fall for the race baiting from the McCain camp -- its obvious McCain is trying to get the black guy to attack the poor little white woman.
TO: Handy Andy

LOL.  I got that email too.  There is so many things wrong with your post, it isnt even worth pointing out the facts. I will leave it to you to do the simple searches...assuming you are capable
The media needs to stop being complicit in this outrageous McCain campaign.  Did I miss something is it McCarthy running or McCain, I can't seem to tell the difference right now.

Second this is a very dangerous game McCain is playing.  A tragedy of historic proportions is being called for be a presidential candidate and the media is helping feed the fire.  This is outragoues and shameful behavior.  The media must cease and desist covering this garbage before something truly tragic happens.

Dictionary definition for John McCain:

Erratic, reckless, oblivious to other's problems, willing to say and do anything to attain his undeserved goals, lacking in good and reasoned judgment, totally pathetic.
THIS one is voting for THAT one!

Obama/Biden 08,12
McCain is losing his marbles and this election! And come on now… can anyone really take anything Tucker says seriously? He’s the same guy that when asked about Palin’s readiness to be VP said “She's been the commander of the Alaska National Guard that's been deployed overseas. That's foreign policy experience.”  He has as much credibility as Rove – both cut from the same cloth
McCain did not deny the remarks of Obama. They said they would redirect priorities.  Give us details. The Wall Street Journal agrees with Obama.  In this case McCain is having both the taxpayer and homeowner solely pay for the brunt of the mortgage buyout.  This is McCain as a free market promoter. Protect the banks and have the rest of us pay for it. Nice try Johnny come lately but you can put lipstick on a pig and it still is a pig.
FYI from Indiana, I live in a small (8,000 people) community in northern IN and we see our first Obama sings on Main street & even a few in the rural areas.  Remarkable for this mostly older white communtiy.  Where can I get MY Obama sign!
Where have I seen this before -- the crowd taunts of reporters traveling with Sarah Palin, the rage drummed up by the GOP ticket against the news media, the "kill them" attitude typified by the man in the Palin crowd in Clearwater, Fla., who yelled at an African-American TV sound technician: "Sit down, boy!"

It's getting so ugly out there that it's only a matter of moments before "press-bashing" can be taken literally.

I'll tell you where I've seen this "beat the press" tactic before: In the waning days of the flailing 1992 re-election campaign of President George H. W. Bush. In a flashing signal of desperation that could have been read from the next galaxy, Bush and his surrogates spent so much time attacking the media, giving out buttons and bumper stickers saying "Annoy the Media -- Re-Elect Bush," that Republican audiences on the campaign trail were ravening at the sight of the journalists accompanying the patrician-raised Bush 41 to campaign rallies.

One day in Oregon, as I recall, a network crew was set upon and assaulted. Other journalists were shoved. We all were hollered at: "Tell the truth! Tell the truth!" One hothead in Vineland, N.J., seemed within a couple of seconds of taking a swing at me as I walked by, laden down with a computer and other shoulder-mounted gear. A red-faced young man walked into our filing tent in the Pacific Northwest and ranted, glossolalia-like, at the top of his lungs, the spit flying.

The vibes got nastier by the day. Finally, one evening on the road, one journalist made his way to Bush as the president was dining with staffers and beseeched him to tone down the rhetoric before hate led to tragedy.

Obama is RADICAL!!!! - AND his "friends" are very questionable - and ACORN are corrupt gang members that obama encourages to corrupt our voting system.
McCain/Palin - a Team we can TRUST!
To Casey - Excellent!  You've defined the dishonorable McC quite well -- or, rather, you've spelled out for him just how he has defined himself.  Anyone who can't see that he is more and more a doddering fool, befuddled, without intelligent thought, must be suffering from having their vision blurred by other issues.  Could it be color??  Could it be their own lack of intelligence and judgment?

It is a sad and curious thing that some of the most deprived, those in the greatest need for intelligent leadership, keep voting against themselves and their own needs in favor of mythic mavericks, or some manufactured iconic image.
(A rally today in the Midwest, sounding reminiscent of 1930s Munich fascists, railed against what they perceive to be liberal socialists.  They fail to see that there is, indeed, a kind of socialism at work today -- but only for the wealthy, with govt. bailing out Wall St., and telling the rest of the population "Caveat Emptor" (buyer beware), "you can fend for yourselves.   And by the way, we'll send you the bill for whatever it costs for us to bail out the big guys."   America, wake up!
Obama is an Arrogant, Radical FRAUD - I will NOT vote for him - and Millions of Americans feel the same way.

Wright, Rezko, Raines, Ayres - ACORN - are we to believe he really did NOT know anything about these corrupt guys??????
Pat, Chicago...

so let me get this straight... Annenburg backed a former terrorist in Ayers which means Anneburg herself is a terrorist.

Which means McCain is accepting money from a Terrorist which means his campaign is being funded by a domestic terrorist?

makes sense to me... why hasn't MSNBC latched onto this?  Its all over huffington post!
One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.  This is what voters will be doing in voting for McCain and Palin.  The country needs a vigorous change, and only Obama and Biden can deliver it.
McCain is so full of hate for Obama and will do ANYTHING to win this election!!  Now Cindy McCain is getting in on the act. She and Palin need to take a lesson on "class" from Michelle Obama.

What happened to "Country First?" What happened to the time he said he would never go down this road?  And he calls Obama a liar.  GOP's HAVE NO SHAME!!
Mccains plan for everything is to have a surge. Do you people really think he knows anything? He is dumb Palin is dumb. It has nothing to do with friends, we do not need another four years of George w Bush, we don't. I am tired of the dumb people i am tired of the characture assult, I am tired of the folksy palin and I am tired of the old man who cannot for two days have the same strategy. he is erratic and palin is extreme say no to both.
I need to apologize to some of my fellow americans...I got caught up in the fenzy.  But, I have decided to turn away from fear.  Whatever the coming months, and years, bring...I will not turn on another fellow american.  I will attend all of my energy on my congressional representation, mayoral, presidential and so on.  My attention is my government now.  I hope yours will be too.
Don't forget that our first President Bush referred to a New World Order...first in the recipe? Divide free thinking democratic citizens of the republic.
Do not hate one another...visit your attendance on our government leaders at every level.

I am not bashing fellow americans anymore. Each has a right to their own opinion, I will make my opinion known at the ballot box...and I am watching that the ballot box is protected.
Good luck, but more importantly, immediately hold them accountable for both, right behavior and devisive behavior.

'Erractic and uncertain behaviors," is an example of is the kind behaviors that McCain is exhibiting. I believe this kind of behavior an example of the financial market over the world.  There is a void of stable leadership.  McCain is contributing to this instability by negative attacks on the character of Obama.  When the parties attack the integrity and the character of the potential President it sends a message that that person may be the President is not trustworthy, dangerous, risky, not supported of our military, a terrorist, stupid, and not qualified.  They are in essense saying the person will representing the United States does not deserve to be President. Why would a fellow Senator disrespect another Senator to the world.  In a sense saying we elect to be a part of our Legislative branch, a person who possess these kinds of characteristics. It says more about the character of Senator McCain. I think these kinds of negative personal attacks on the character of our elected Senators weakens our National Security, and affirns some dangerous idealogy of those who want to bring harm to us, in our own country and around the world.  What will happen if Obama wins, the negative character asassination will hamper his ability to get things done. If McCain wins because he has used these tactics, but doesn't have nothing to offer the people, he will not be able to get things done, because he does know what to do.  The same goes for Sarah Palin.  The people who ignored this erratic and uncertain behaviors, deserve the chaos they will have if McCain/Palin are elected. The finacial world is responing to the possibliltly of a erratic and uncertain McCain/Palin administration.  people need to thnk more globally, it not just putting America First, the world is bigger.
Stick it to them Obama, ha ha ha  If he is elected, thats exactly what he will do!! I am guessing most of you people on here feel you are not paying enough taxes. Thats good, because they will be increasing if you get your wish.

***********************************

Drinkin' the kool-aid?  You must make over $250K.  Too bad you'll have to pay more taxes AND have your healthcare taxed by McCain.
We dont need a bailout, we need jobs and fair wages. Democracy and the free market are very precious. Time to roll up the sleeves America and go to work.  Work to rebuild our energy base, work to rebulid our infrastructure, work to rebuild our economy. No more handouts and loans at the expense of our kids.
Please take a look at this video and pass it along.  The McShame/Failin campaign is very dangerous, both McLie and Sarah are in sighting hate and violence.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/09/mccain-palin-rally-attend_n_133240.html

I believe that the media is facilitating and abetting the McCain campaigns rhetoric about Wm. Ayers and Sen. Obama's middle name.

If the media is determined to SPREAD the sleaze then you are obligated to state the facts don't just repeat the sleaze.  Tell the people the truth, give links to the facts.

CHRIS MATTHEWS of MSNBC should be ashamed; his rhetoric is becoming a real danger to the truth.  He uses his own words like "sleeper cell" ect.  The media must be honest and tell the people how to find out the truth.  DO NOT JUST SPREAD the horrible character assaults.

This is not about who has the best stories anymore, this is serious business.  America is in trouble; Sen. Obama has what it takes to make things better.  But you see a way to keep an interesting story going, you see ratings.  You’re adding your own words to make the story better.  Guys, start doing what’s right for our Country, tell people the facts.  Tell them who is lying and why.  It’s not necessary to repeat the horrible things being spread by the McCain Camp. and their dangerous VP pick Palin.

This is a time in our history to stand up for facts and the truth.  By constantly repeating the vile statements made by Palin and the innuendoes made by McCain, the Media is facilitating a campaign that wants to win at any cost even if it means setting our country back years.

Wake up media, if you must repeat the dark innuendoes, at least give your listeners a link to check the facts!
