Questioner: 'I actually did' know Fannie

Posted: Thursday, October 09, 2008 3:34 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Michael Levine
I tried to get in touch via Facebook with Oliver Clark, the man who McCain said probably didn't know what Fannie Mae was before the financial crisis (at Tuesday's debate). Apparently others have done the same. He just posted the following on his Facebook page:

How did I feel about Sen. McCain stating “You probably never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before this.”
Well Senator, I actually did. I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person. I have a bachelor degree in Political Science from Tennessee State, so I try to keep myself up to date with current affairs. I have a Master degree in Legal Studies from Southern Illinois University, a few years in law school, and I am currently pursuing a Master in Public Administration from the University of Memphis. In defense of the Senator from Arizona I would say he is an older guy, and may have made an underestimation of my age. Honest mistake. However, it could be because I am a young African-American male. Whatever the case may be it was somewhat condescending regardless of my age to make an assumption regarding whether I was knowledgeable about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

FULL POSTING:

Ok I usually do not participate in blogs, but I have been receiving a lot of questions so here’s what happened:

1. How did I get to participate in the debate?
Well, as many of you know I went to undergrad at Tennessee State University. (Go Tigers) I have a Nashville area code for my cell phone. So the Sunday before last, I received a call from the Gallop Poll. They asked a few questions regarding my choice in the Presidential election. They asked who I would vote for. I said most likely I would be voting for Barack Obama. They followed with, “is there any chance that you would change your mind“? I said “Of course anything is possible.” They then asked me as an uncommitted voter would I like to participate in the Town hall debate. I said “Of course!”

They told me the selection process was totally random, and I was called. I think about a 120 people were chosen to be apart of the town hall, but only 80 would be on stage. Out of the eighty people chosen to sit on stage I was number 78!

2. How did I get to sit so close to Sen. Obama?
Well, they seated us according to our numbers, they started with number one on the side closest to Sen. McCain and ended on the side with Sen. Obama.

3. How did I get to ask a question?
I had no idea they would choose me to ask a question. They told us to think of one or two questions we would like to ask the candidates if we had the opportunity. I asked a lot of friends and family what I should ask and the consensus was a question on the economy. Tom Brokaw came the morning of the debate and collected our questions and said he along with his team would review all the questions and decide which ones would be asked. About 3 minutes before the debate a fellow town hall participant sitting behind Brokaw looked over his shoulder and saw that 78 had the second question to ask. He mouthed over to me that I would have the second question. I did not believe him, but I still looked back over my question to make sure I would not look stupid! (Whether I did or not that for you to decide) Brokaw asked the first question then came to me. I stood up and asked and my question was in essence how was the bailout package going to help the average American?

4. Was I nervous?
No. I was cool as a polar bear’s toe nails. Yes, of course I was nervous, they said the show was going to be seen by tens of millions of people, but hey I am son of Blood and Thunder so I held it down! Shout out to the Ques Roo!

5. How did I feel about Sen. McCain’s response?
Sen. McCain. Well, Sen. McCain answered the questions with attacks on Barack and did not address how this package was actually going to help out the average American. Not to mention attacks on myself, but that question is to follow. He did say he warned the public of the forthcoming crisis, which I guess was a good thing????

6. How did I feel about Sen. Obama’s response?
I felt Sen. Obama addressed the issue more directly then Sen. McCain did. Obama actually stated that the bailout package was going to help Americans buy homes and stay in their homes.

8. Why did I have a disposable camera?
I do have a digital camera! The people at the debate actually provided the disposable cameras for us and stated we would not be able to take our digital cameras on stage, but we could take the cameras provided for us.

Well, that’s all of the questions I can think of. Let me know what you think, and feel free to ask any questions you have.

Peace and Love,
Oliver

Don't worry, he probably thought you were one of his fellow prisoners. Apparently a whole lot of people are included in that category in Senator McCain's mind these days. Can't believe that WILLIE GEIST didn't use that clip in his News You Can't Use! Willie, you're letting us down here!
A link to the actual facebook page would have been nice.
The media needs to end its complicity with the McCain campaign NOW.  Sarah Palin has the NERVE to say we don't know who Obama is?????   I guess we know everything we need to about her right?  I mean she's white so what more needs to be said?

Is this right MSM?  Is that all you need to know?  Is this why you show her FULL stump speeches to help her spread her HATE and LIES?
Oliver is exactly the kind of citizen that McCain is afraid of, informed! He wishes everybody was like the crowds that come to GOP events. Luckily, most of America is wiser!

Obama/Biden 08!
Out of touch.  It's part of the problem with voters relating to Obama reversely.  Preconceptions and misconceptions.  McCain does not strike me as very comfortable with blacks.  It goes to his holding back on voting for Martin Luther Kings B-day holiday.  Whether that is the case or not the man is out of touch with the people.  His campaign appears to think no one is educated.
This is an interesting story worth talking about at least a few times.  Think we'll hear anything about it in your political stories on MSNBC EVER?  Maybe Rachel or Keith, but I be there won't be a word said!
Who cares?  I wouldn't vote for McCain if my life depended on it but raking him over the coals for this particular issue is just about the biggest waste of time ever (excepting, of course, the time I just wasted ranting about it).
I will have to say, this this piece is insightful on the process of how the questions were choosen and how those people out of millions of people were chosen to be on stage.

thanks for sharing!
What an impressive young man.  Oliver Clark, you do your parents proud!
If you ask me, I believe Senator McCain owes this gentleman an apology.
Oliver Clark exhibited much more class than I would have, given the rather insulting prelude that McCain used in answering his question. In his place, I probably would have cut him after that "you probably never heard of" crack and told him exactly what I have heard of...
McCain is a joke!  He clearly thinks very little of black people - see his MLK vote; his Obama disrespect and this, his asinine insult!
This is a very interesting account of what it was like to be part of the debate.  Great response.    Thanks for posting!
For those who are wondering what is "Ques Roo" it is a fraternity: Omega Psi Phi -  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_Psi_Phi
Blacks are voting for Obama 99%. Racists. This guy looks like a setup.

Many of us recognized the condescending remark right when it was said. McCain has really shown his true colors. Senator McSlander and Ms DeFame are about as un-presidential as they come. The investigation into Todd Palin's unpatriotic secessionist party is welcome news.

I am impressed that he has a Masters and is pursuing a second. This is 21st century and we cannot judge people by their skin or gender or religion. I live in CA and my daughter's best teacher was her first grade teacher who is hispanic and male. At my previous job, the best network admin was an african american. There were whites and asians in the team but if you wanted results you would call the black guy. So if you really want to vote for Sen.McCain based on the issues, then go ahead and do it. But please do not vote for him because his opponent is black.
Thanks for following up on this.  I was shocked at McCain's comment and surprised none of the MSNBC commentators caught it.  I could tell by the look on Oliver's face that McCain was wrong(again).  McCain is condescending and disrespectful.
McCain, an old angry condescending man, ready for retirement.
Another condescending remark to a person of color. What a jackass that McCain is! GET THE HOOK!
i'm glad i'm not the only one who thought McCain avoided the question.  i felt Obama avoided it too, but at least near the end he addressed it a bit.

and hey, at least he didn't call Oliver "That One" or "Boy"...
Wow, Oliver, thanks for letting us get to hear your response... we watched the debate and immediately picked up on what a condescending comment that was, given you'd asked a question about the economy and all.

Surprisingly, most of us are also smart enough to look up who headed these entities when and who gave how much to which candidate...

And for those of you who aren't... the facts are corporations DON'T GIVE CONTRIBUTIONS, people do. Yes, employees of fannie gave more to Obama. Heck < I gave more to Obama, too.

But of "board directors and lobbyists" for freddy mac, $169,000.00 went to McCain. $16,000.00 to Obama.

Who do YOU think had more influence at Freddy Mac? the employees and families... or the executives and lobbyists?

DUH.
Seriously?!  Is this what it has come down to?  I feel like I am dealing with a bunch of 5th graders here!!
I sure as heck didn't know who Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were in relation to our economy as I am sure a lot of people in this world didn't regardless of your education or skin color!!!
McCain didn't mean anything by it for crying out loud!!  He was just stating a comment for the general public!!!

Grow up!!  Report on some real issues!!  God knows there are enough of them out there!!!
This person went to SIU? No one that ever went there came out with any brain cells - huge party school. This guy looks like he went in with none. Probably the only place that would admit him.
RE:  Rachel Maddow Show.  I think her show is great, but I can't figure out the viewing schedule.  Today I am viewing her show from the 8th.  I often don't find it when I expect to at 9:00 pm ET as stated.  Don't want to miss it; hate waiting for it to arrive.
(no posting please)
MCain has said that several other times- even to larger crowds and I have always found it really condescending. I mean some of us have shopped for a loan before, sir! Not to mention watched TV commercials? I knew who AIG was too, I have never been sure what MCain was driving at with all of that- good for Allen- I mean Oliver!
Please take a look at this video and pass it along.  The McShame/Failin campaign is very dangerous, both McLie and Sarah are insighting hate and violence.

McShame probably thought Oliver was a minority who was suckered into a sub prime loan.  McBush isn't just old, he's a hypocrite.

Chuck T, our main numbers guy,

At what point do they close down the stock market completely to stop the bleeding?  I thought I had heard it was somewhere around 8500, but would love for someone to address this.
Like yourself and a lot of other folks who may or may not have homes we knew of Fannie and Freddie before this mess.  It is amazing how stupid Mr Mc Cain and Mrs Palin really think we are. It is time everyone starts telling it how bad it really is don't wait until Nov. 6, 2008 to say Bush has hided......... from us.
That was a cool thing to happen to Oliver. (Don't worry, dude, you did great and asked a smart question.) I thought Obama gave a great answer. McGrumpy was terrible and got worst as the debate went on. Nice job, Oliver. I will check you out on Facebook.
McCain's slight of the guy seemed odd and unnecessary. Young people are engaged in this election and Oliver is a good example.
--Dont't feel too bad I was offended by practically everything Senator McCain said as well as the condescending, rancorous, tone he used to say it in!!

This is just one of the many, MANY reasons why John McCain is behind in the polls and will most likely loose this election.(Except for the possibility of voter fraud)

Great Post by the way!!
It's so refreshing to hear more about this young man.  He really does represent the youth of this country.  Our future is bright!
So rich! Mccain seemed so out of touch.  Why would he assume the questioner didn't know about Fannie/Freddy when he was concerned enough to ask a question about the bailout? Fits in perfectly with his "That one" comment for his clueless condenscention.
Thank you very much for telling us about your experience.  It was most kind of you.
Oh my John McCain showing his age and making condescending remarks to a minority? What has this world come to, a bonafide war and former resident of the Hanoi Hilton being corrected by a "non-joe sixpack"? I think not, what African-American with a degree who knows how many houses and cars he owns would dare do that? Not this lowly Vietnam-era veteran.
Peace and Love back at you Oliver.  Thanks for your thoughtful and fair-minded posting
TO: Handy Andy

LOL.  I got that email too.  There is so many things wrong with your post, it isnt even worth pointing out the facts. I will leave it to you to do the simple searches...assuming you are capable

Here's another example of an Obama kool-aide drinker. All talk, no substance, just like her hero.

Obama is in deep to the Macs, ACORN and Ayers. He'll dodge and weave on the issues, but he'll never admit he's accountable.

McCain thinks we are all stupid.

Good for you, Mister Clark, and much thanks for the great story!  Poor Alzheimer's John; he's already buried and doesn't know he's dead yet.  As for his running mate, she's alive only below the neck.
It's because McCain is losing his mind.  He's a senile old man who belongs in an assisted living center.  Maybe he can meet a prettier woman, cheat on her, then leave Cindy.  Oh yeah, she's got the money.  Sorry John.

Obama/Biden 08/12
The way Oliver carried himself and expressed himself he is obviously an educated person, and the question he asked also indicates he probably HAS heard of them.  McCain thinks of himself as the smartest guy around but he showed us that really he just spits out talking points without thinking too much about them.
McCain's attitude would most undoubtedly be that you aren't educated. Your credentials are better than his and the moose eating bimbo, so called maverick ticket.
Oliver: Your question was great. Thanks for representing us all.

Please, everyone, inform yourselves and vote!
Those are pretty smart answers, thank you Oliver. Actually your question is foremost in the minds of many people. And you are right, Barrack answered the question.
I don't suppose you thought at any moment to interrupt Senator Mccain or to speak up right after his response to your question and state "excuse me Senator McCain, but yes, I have been quite familiar with Fannie and Freddie for quite some time".

You may not have been heard on the television as you may not have had access or proximity to a mike (the mike), but some in the press and certainly the audience would have heard you and repeated what you had stated for everyone to know.

That would have been rich.
I thought McCain's comment was condescending and presumptuous...definitely a turn-off for me. Being African-American or young does not equal ignorant.
This is yet another example of McCain's complete inability to relate to the average person.

McCain is Not a Racist, as Far as I Know
http://voteforamerica.net/editorials/Comments.aspx?ArticleId=96&ArticleName=McCain+is+Not+Racist%2c+as+Far+as+I+Know
I thought that Senator McCain seemed less engaged with the black questioners than the white ones.
