Questioner: 'I actually did' know Fannie

Posted: Thursday, October 09, 2008 3:34 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Michael Levine
I tried to get in touch via Facebook with Oliver Clark, the man who McCain said probably didn't know what Fannie Mae was before the financial crisis (at Tuesday's debate). Apparently others have done the same. He just posted the following on his Facebook page:

How did I feel about Sen. McCain stating “You probably never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before this.”
Well Senator, I actually did. I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person. I have a bachelor degree in Political Science from Tennessee State, so I try to keep myself up to date with current affairs. I have a Master degree in Legal Studies from Southern Illinois University, a few years in law school, and I am currently pursuing a Master in Public Administration from the University of Memphis. In defense of the Senator from Arizona I would say he is an older guy, and may have made an underestimation of my age. Honest mistake. However, it could be because I am a young African-American male. Whatever the case may be it was somewhat condescending regardless of my age to make an assumption regarding whether I was knowledgeable about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Ok I usually do not participate in blogs, but I have been receiving a lot of questions so here’s what happened:

1. How did I get to participate in the debate?
Well, as many of you know I went to undergrad at Tennessee State University. (Go Tigers) I have a Nashville area code for my cell phone. So the Sunday before last, I received a call from the Gallop Poll. They asked a few questions regarding my choice in the Presidential election. They asked who I would vote for. I said most likely I would be voting for Barack Obama. They followed with, “is there any chance that you would change your mind“? I said “Of course anything is possible.” They then asked me as an uncommitted voter would I like to participate in the Town hall debate. I said “Of course!”

They told me the selection process was totally random, and I was called. I think about a 120 people were chosen to be apart of the town hall, but only 80 would be on stage. Out of the eighty people chosen to sit on stage I was number 78!

2. How did I get to sit so close to Sen. Obama?
Well, they seated us according to our numbers, they started with number one on the side closest to Sen. McCain and ended on the side with Sen. Obama.

3. How did I get to ask a question?
I had no idea they would choose me to ask a question. They told us to think of one or two questions we would like to ask the candidates if we had the opportunity. I asked a lot of friends and family what I should ask and the consensus was a question on the economy. Tom Brokaw came the morning of the debate and collected our questions and said he along with his team would review all the questions and decide which ones would be asked. About 3 minutes before the debate a fellow town hall participant sitting behind Brokaw looked over his shoulder and saw that 78 had the second question to ask. He mouthed over to me that I would have the second question. I did not believe him, but I still looked back over my question to make sure I would not look stupid! (Whether I did or not that for you to decide) Brokaw asked the first question then came to me. I stood up and asked and my question was in essence how was the bailout package going to help the average American?

4. Was I nervous?
No. I was cool as a polar bear’s toe nails. Yes, of course I was nervous, they said the show was going to be seen by tens of millions of people, but hey I am son of Blood and Thunder so I held it down! Shout out to the Ques Roo!

5. How did I feel about Sen. McCain’s response?
Sen. McCain. Well, Sen. McCain answered the questions with attacks on Barack and did not address how this package was actually going to help out the average American. Not to mention attacks on myself, but that question is to follow. He did say he warned the public of the forthcoming crisis, which I guess was a good thing????

6. How did I feel about Sen. Obama’s response?
I felt Sen. Obama addressed the issue more directly then Sen. McCain did. Obama actually stated that the bailout package was going to help Americans buy homes and stay in their homes.

8. Why did I have a disposable camera?
I do have a digital camera! The people at the debate actually provided the disposable cameras for us and stated we would not be able to take our digital cameras on stage, but we could take the cameras provided for us.

Well, that’s all of the questions I can think of. Let me know what you think, and feel free to ask any questions you have.

Peace and Love,
Oliver

I'm sorry but I played the last race card in the democrat deck in a radio interview.
What a jerk this guy is. Yeah, I'm sure he was an "independent" who didn't know how he was going to vote. Talks just like a partisan hack. McCain was talking in "general" terms about alot of people not knowing about Fannie and Freddie. You liberals take offense to everything. Gee, I wonder how Phil Graham could ever think this is a country of whiners. Maybe if you didn't whine and complain about everything he wouldn't have said it.
I just love how FR quotes the NY Times, the Boston Globe, the LA Times. Why not just go all in and get the Daily Lost and the Huff-and-Puff ComPost writers feeding you material?
POW, ZAAAP, take that darth McGoo. This grumpy, out of touch old man needs to retire to Sedona ASAP.
You can't blame Sen. McCain; Mr. Clark is, after all, "one" too.
Good Oliver, most people vivdly remeber your name and face.  I saw taking picture with Obama that night.  What was feeling about the fact that Obama waited to talk to you guys while Mccain stormed out of the hall?
McCain does not get it. At least he did not call him that one. What makes him think that others do not know about Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. I am sure that this guy is out of his mind.
Soooo... McThusealh assumes that this guy didn't know what two big, famous corporations were until they melted down, but can't buy the possibility that Sen. Obama had never heard of a man who did terrible things when he was 8? Like when you move to Chicago, they give you a brochure that points out the background of every citizen.

Erratic is a polite word for this guy.
Stock market is down over 600 pts today, but I can certainly see why MSNBC spent all day talking about Ayres!!!
That's neat. I am glad that Barack didn't let you down Oliver. But just goes to show that McCain really doesn't relate to people nearly as well as the MSM seems to think he does and Barack relates better.
I yell that at my TV all the time....lol
I hate to tell you republicans but this guy is head and shoulders above McCain in the intelligence and common sense departments.

Did a little truth about McCains inner feelings slip through?
WOW!AS A SOLDIER THESE ARE THE PEOPLE I DEFENDED? I FEEL SINK TO THE STOMACH! AND I'M FEARFUL FOR OBAMA.

GOT TO SEE, THESE ARE SAD TIMES, AND PEOPLE ARE SO DIVIDED AND HATEFUL...

CAN MCCAIN WIN THIS TYPE OF WAR TOO!
Thanks for the info.  I thought it interesting that Gallop called your cell phone.  I thought they were worried about undercounting those that only use cell phones because they weren't calling them.  Go figures.
Clearly the statement was not meant as derogatory. McCain was speaking to the "common man" out there... most of whom did NOT know Fannie & Freddie before all this. Anyone thinking otherwise needs to give their head a shake.
Watching Sen McCain during the debate and the past few days, I get the impression that the strain of the long campaign is taking a toll on him.  He looks and acts like he is tired. The grind of a political campaign would tax ayounger man, so it would only be natural that a man over 70 would feel the strain.

Have we heard anything lately about the state of his health?  Being POTUS is a taxing responsibility--I wonder if he is really up to the task?
BUT - YOU sir were totally "Undecided" - think NOT or this simple response would not upset you!
Wright, Ayres, Raines, Rezko - ACORN - all corrupt guys that obama does NOT seem to know?????
Does the obama gang really think the American people are that stupid to vote for a RADICAL FRAUD?????
I'm going to vote for THAT ONE!

I'm John McGoo, and I approved the message
Mr. Clark has every right to feel he was condescended to.  However, keep in mind John McCain spends a good deal of time with Sarah Palin, so he may be losing the ability to actually answer a question, and moreover probably is used to assuming a total lack of knowledge.
Obama eads McCain by 8 points in West by God Virginia...the reddest of the red states.  New American Research Group poll!

Is it too late to draft Mitt Romney? You know, someone that at least understands how the economy works. Not like the two no loads we have running today.
This is an example of how out of touch McCain is with the changes in our society. Just because he is a black man or young doesn't mean he never heard of Fannie Mae or Fannie Mack. I am a physician and teach at  a University Hospital and I never heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mack. McCain is hung up with stereotypes and can't relate to the way the world is today, not 1960. Never assume that someone is ignorant and always speak to people of any color, race, economic station, religion with the utmost of respect and dignity. That is what I teach my Medical Students. Maybe McCain should go back to school for a refresher course on how to treat your fellow man. His rants about Obama have that same tone of disrespect and superiority. Do you really want a man with this temperment to be President of the USA??? I don't think so. And I won't even mention is moronic choice for Vice President, I promise.
Let's make it all about RACE - AGAIN!!!!!!!!
Really - if obama had of been the one to respond to this "Undecided" voter - would this even be posted????
Think NOT!

Of course you knew, Oliver. McCain thought he was talking to Palin.
I wonder if John McCain will refer to this gentleman as "the OTHER one?"
Please cover the video of the McCain/Palin video produced in the Strongsville OH campaign event. This is appaulling. I am ashamed that these people would even carry the American flag.

Also Robert F. Kennedy has a compeling piece on the Huffington Post regarding Sarah Palin's ties to the Alaska Independence Party.
