CLEVELAND, Ohio --
Palin used a Washington Times report that
Obama sought congressional approval for any plan to keep U.S. forces in Iraq to further her view that the Democratic presidential candidate is putting ambition first.
“If it is true, what Barack Obama attempted to do there, the efforts that he made, it is a stunning example of putting ambition over country,” she said at a fundraiser at the Ritz-Carlton.
The ambition line, which Palin launched Thursday, is coordinated with an ad campaign that accuses Obama of placing ambition first in his contacts with William Ayers and other Chicago politicians.
But she was specifically referring to an article Friday that said Obama worked to convince Iraqi leaders that President Bush should not be able to enact an agreement to keep U.S. forces in Iraq without congressional approval. Iraqi leaders also said Obama asked to delay an agreement until after the next president was inaugurated, but the campaign denies the charge, according to the Washington Times.
“There’s a lot of explanations he owes the American people, but on that one, especially, if any of that is true, what we read this morning, it’s stunning,” she said. “It takes a lot of nerve to lobby against bringing our troops home and then lecture John McCain about the cost of war?”
Obama campaign aides said several lawmakers who traveled with Obama to Iraq this summer say he never urged a delay in negotiations.
Palin also spoke at length in support for Cindy McCain, who earlier this week attacked Obama for voting against troop funding. “More power to her,” Palin said.
While in Cleveland, Palin also cut the ribbon for the Michael T. George Center, a facility for adults with special needs. Palin toured the facility and then spoke of its namesake, a 5-year old boy with Down syndrome.
“I see in him what I hope that my son in just a few years will be also,” she said. “A happy, healthy, such a joy filled little man. I cannot wait until my Trig is of that age also and we can share more of life’s joys with him.”
