Palin defends role despite report

From NBC/NJ’s Matthew Berger and NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Palin implied this morning the Alaska legislative panel found she had done nothing wrong despite an independent investigator's report that she had “abused” her authority in seeking the firing of her ex-brother-in-law as a state trooper.

"No, and if you read the report you'll see that there was nothing unlawful or unethical about replacing a cabinet member,” she said, when asked about the report while boarding the Straight Talk Express bus with the engines roaring behind her. “You gotta read the report, sir."

Palin's answer, carefully parsed, is accurate in and of itself. She broke no laws and she is within her rights as governor to dismiss state officials, as she did with former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. But the report also found that she abused her authority and "knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda, to wit: to get Trooper Michael Wooten fired."

Additionally it found that her actions were "a violation of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act," which, as the New York Times writes today, "was established to ‘discourage executive branch employees from acting upon personal interest in the performance of their public responsibilities and to avoid conflicts of interest in the performance of duty.’”

Palin’s husband, Todd, acknowledged earlier this week that he spoke with state officials, to seek Wooten’s dismissal. The Palin family and staff maintain their actions were warranted because Wooten had committed several crimes, including tasering his stepson. Independent investigator Steve "Branchflower, however, wrote that he doesn't believe the Palins were truly afraid of Wooten," the Alaska Daily News reported today. "I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins' real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family related reasons."

Before an audio recording surfaced in August that showed “an aide pressuring the Public Safety Department to fire a state trooper embroiled in a custody battle with her sister,” the Alaska Daily News reported at the time, Palin had “previously said her administration didn't exert pressure to get rid of trooper Mike Wooten" or that "her staff had made about two dozen contacts with public safety officials about the trooper.”

"I do now have to tell Alaskans that such pressure could have been perceived to exist although I have only now become aware of it," Palin said at the time and called the evidence a "smoking gun." And when the investigation opened, she declared, "Hold me accountable."

In a statement Friday, the campaign said the report came from a “partisan-led inquiry run by Obama supporters.”

The panel, however, which was led by a Democrat and Obama supporter, was bipartisan with eight Republicans to four Democrats all voting yesterday to publicly release Branchflower's report -- though not all agreed with the findings, the Alaska Daily News reported.

Republican Senate President Lyda Green, who is from Wasilla -- Palin's home town -- and has clashed with governor in the past, told the Alaska Daily News, "The problem with power is that people pay attention to it. And it's very easy to get beside yourself and use it in the wrong way. And we do have to leave personal business at home."

But two other Republicans said they understood Todd Palin's reactions.

"Who is going to blame Todd Palin for protecting his family?" said Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole. "Not me."

"She and Todd Palin were trying to defend their family," Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage said. "I think any normal person would do the same."

Palin has backed the actions of a second investigation, run by the state’s Personnel Board, whose members are appointed by the governor.

8 Republicans and 4 Democrats on the Committee that voted to release the Report and the Palin/McCain camps calls it a partisan Obama report! That is funny Sen. McCain.

This campaign team is finished.
Dear Leaders,
It is out of frustration that i have decided to write to you all. Have you ever heard of an ailment which is characterized by presenile dementia? may be that is what led to the Sarah VP pick. It is obvious that we will not win this election. John McCain has sold us to the democrats - he has poor judgment, outdated policies, no economic agenda, poor social and family values (see what he did to his first wife) and does not appeal to conservative values. His smear campaigns of late and consistent half truths about an Obama is unbiblical and stinks. Why should i really vote for him? If McCain could despise and abandon a sick wife for an affluent beauty queen, she will do no better to the American people. If he is an avid gambler as very close souces state, he will gamble our nation. I am a real conservative and CANNOT vote for McCain. I would rather vote for Obama because eventhough he is a democrat, at the very least, he has policies that will steer our nation to the right direction (economic, educational an political) and and above all,  he has some respect for family whereas John Maccain does not.
Let us keep partisanship aside and be honest with ourselves for the sake of God whom we all serve and our values.
Tina O'Neil
Of course she denies the findings of UNANYMOUS BIPARTISAN report. She is a liar and liars never can admit the truth even when presented with it. Yet McCain/Palin and the Republicans want everyone to think they are the moral, ethical, religious, “Country First” party.

There are still other issues on the table for Palin and all this in her year and a half term as Governor. The Republicans are right about one thing, she is a quick learner, how to become corrupt at a record pace. And the McCain/Palin Campaign keeps trying to bring up trash on Senator Obama from something that happened 40 years ago, ridiculous relationships with organizations and flat out distortions and lies. Well surprise McCain/Palin, how are you going to spin this one as a measure of Judgment and Integrity. And she wants to expand the VP role.

The McCain/Palin ticket is the most disgraceful campaign I have ever witnessed and I have been voting for 30+ years. I am an Independent and supported Senator McCain in 2000, NOT ANYMORE. I just can’t understand how many Independents can buy into these Republican FEAR TACTICS.

This is a disgrace to our country. SAD, JUST PLAIN SAD.
Someone from the GOP side will have to carefully explain to me how an elected official who violated ethics law and abused her power is going to 'reform' Washington.  Sounds like more of the same of the last 8 years.

Plus, the involvement of her husband (not an elected official) is just plain creepy...
Sarah's abuse of power, just like Bush.

Hey Sarah, who would Jesus vote for? Barack!

God doesn't like hatred, racism and lies.
Who is going to blame Todd Palin for protecting his family?" said Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole. "Not me."

Holy White Fang!  Actually, congrats to the Alaska committee; the folks up there must really be miffed that the Palins are Clampett-ifying their state.  Fight back proudly, Alaskans---but vote Obama.
Can she read? I can and it clearly shows that she abused her power. A question for the American voters, do you want a co- VP in our White House? Who is the real Palin running for VP- Sarah or Todd?
A seemless replacement for Cheney. No wonder the brown shirts worship her.

"She and Todd Palin were trying to defend their family," Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage said. "

By getting him fired? That protects their family? I think the right just doesn't know what the truth is, anymore.
She is delusional!  Her warped view or the world is becoming clearer each day.  She is ill educated, has not a drop of common sense, but she thinks she should be VP or God forbid President!  She is in need of some serious help.  What kind of medication is she taking? Where are her medical records?  Remember Eagleton, if he couldn’t be VP after being treated for mental illness how can she?

Where are her medical records?
in responses to Palin's remarks ab out  the inv estigation:  this is just another example of the republican compaign stating only half truths.Just short of lying about it.  Lots of people will not read further about it, therefore believing she did nothing wrong.  Wake up, America, read the newspapers and watch the tv if you want the full information.
How can you trust Palin to tell the truth!
She lied about troopergate  and now matter what McShame says, she is still telling a lie!
She wasn't trying to defend her family, she was trying to get back at old brother in law!
After she and McShame loses this election, they can go back to Alaska and puy lipstick on a moose!
You Betya!!!!! WINK WINK
"Who is going to blame Todd Palin for protecting his family?" said Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole. "Not me."
"She and Todd Palin were trying to defend their family," Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage said. "I think any normal person would do the same."

First: If you want to defend your family, then do it off state time.  The report states that the claim that their family was in any danger is a fabrication.

Second, Is there really a Republican representing the North Pole?  Is this dude an elf or Santa Claus?  LOL!

Third:  If I committed a violation of the Code of Ethics in my profession, the board would take my license away and give me a heavy fine to boot.
Unethical behavior speaks to the very core of one's character.  Sarah Palin has character issues.  She is willing to do or say anything to further her agenda and is driven by unbridled ambition.

Since she is so biblically literate, I hope she remembers and takes to heart the admonition that "pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18 KJV)
Stop saying that she broke no laws.  The report says that she broke the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.  That is a law.  She broke it.  The report gives the exact subsection of the law she broke.

There were two possible laws that she could have broke.  The report says that didn't break a law in firing Monegan, but that she DID break another law in putting improper pressure on him for her own personal purposes.  Someone call her on this, please.

She's the one who needs to read the report.
How interesting..she can deny all she wants
but.... if Obama says he was not friends with Ayers its called a lie.

How sad this campaign has become.

Of course she can fire him. It was all of the harassment and phone calls that were abusive.
Someone needs to put SNOW BOY Todd in another
contest or send him out to fish something. Do your job and let her do hers.
The McCain/Palin campaign is morally bankrupt.

Only one sane, moral choice this year: Obama/Biden!
Palin and many of the pundits are confusing "abuse of power"  and "illegal activity."  Abuse of Power is an ethical violation that is every bit as serious as breaking the law.  By her position of power she had the ability to abuse the rights of others--AND SHE DID!  If you've ever been on the receiving end of Abuse of Power you know how helpless you are to protect yourself.
Just read the report, her and Todd lied repeatedly.   No wonder she did not testify, she would have been forced to purger herself.

This was small town politics at its worst.
Damn those bi-partisan panels and their partisan attacks!  Who ARE they really?  Terrorists?
What else is this pathological liar going to say? She could be caught red-handed on video stealing something and she'd say "that's not me...that's somebody that looks like me...someone is trying to frame me". Does she ever tell the truth? The answer appears to be NO NEVER. What a horrible person!
There appears to be no limit to how far back in history McCain and Palin will go to find events to blame on Obama or his supporters. They need to keep better track of dates. Palin only became the VP nominee in August.
When Alaskan voters elected her, were they aware that Number one Dude was part of that package? It seems to me, that he has just as much power in the Gov.'s office as she does. Here in the lower 48 we resent such behavior. When she returns there on Nov. 5th she needs to be read the riot act and he needs to keep out of her office!
Of course, Sara Palin had already exonerated herself; she did so before the report was released. Didn’t you hear?  She did nothing wrong because she says so. Straight out of the Bush/Cheney mold.  Disgusting. Truly, this is sickening--because this is what America needs right now another pair of people who think the world was laid out for them; owes them everything; and screw the rules, because rules don't apply to THEM. Yea. Right.

For those who haven't seen this behavior before (in your personal dealings with people) or who do not recognize what kind of person we're dealing with, Google this term: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).  THAT is Sara Palin to a Tee!  She is deluded as most classic narcissists are, and typically these kinds of people are fairly innocuous; the butt of every workplace joke, etc. (Much the way Palin has been treated by SNL or late night comedians). But if you take someone with NPD and through some act of random stupidity, actually give them power--you have something far, far, far from funny.  You have a megalomaniac. Hilter, Stalin, Mao, Kim Jung Il, just to name a few.
Once again, denial does more damage than simply acknowledging the error. Isn’t this just like a Washington politician!
Send her to jail right away - we don't need anymore shady criminals in our government - look where it's gotten us... in the toilet.

This is the story people need to focus on - Palin's terrorist ties with Iran!!!

Protecting your family and running the state Government are two totally different avenues.
It is about two different people doing two different agendas.  There is no excuses here, none at all
the State of Alaska's employees and citizens
should be concerned about how much of their
confidential information has been exposed to
Palin's husband?  He is not the govenor she is!
Of course it is Obama's fault, that doesn't
shock me whatsoever.  Why would I want someone
like McCain or Palin leading our country? They
have never taken accountability or responsibilty
for their actions.  Leaders are to be trusted
servants who are governed by our democracy.
It appears Palin doesn't believe she needs to
follow rules. This whole McCain campaign is a
mess.  On one had they talk about caring about
people and then in the next moment have racial
understone and hate coming across on the podium.
Then God comes up in speeches and prayer.  My
husband I pray together everyday on a spiritual
foundation and it is very private. Talking the
talk is one thing but action is another.  This
campaign of McCain's has taken on a bi-polar
direction-I am certainly not fooled-I am so
glad I am for Obama-you know McCain use to be
my hero and I had at one time wanted him to be
President.  Not anymore-the remenance of McCain
has fallen under the spell of hatefullness, superiority, one upmanship, & inbalance.  When
he put Palin on the ticket I knew it would be a
mess. I had read enough about her operations on
the Alaskan website to know she would make
McCains campaign pretty disfunctional and she
has.  You can play dress up but eventually
people will Know that it is not the true deal.
The fact is....the truth always comes out!
"You can lead a horse to water but you can't
make him drink the water"  that is what is
happening here!

Go Obama, with Trust, integrity, dignity, spirit
of love and compassion-Proud to be on your side!
See, we have been saying that palin is a liar and now she just confirms it by stating what is an obvious, blatant lie!  The report clearly states she abused her powers and violated ethics.  Period!

I'm so sick of these republican scumbags and their hate-filled, lying speeches.
