Palin: The verdict: Abuse of power

Posted: Monday, October 13, 2008 9:11 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

“Gov. Sarah Palin abused the powers of her office by pressuring subordinates to try to get her former brother-in-law, a state trooper, fired, an investigation by the Alaska Legislature has concluded,” the New York Times reported over the weekend. “The inquiry found, however, that she was within her right to dismiss her public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, who was the trooper’s boss. A 263-page report released Friday by lawmakers in Alaska found that Ms. Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, had herself exerted pressure to get Trooper Michael Wooten dismissed, as well as allowed her husband and subordinates to press for his firing, largely as a result of his temperament and past disciplinary problems.”

"Testimony compiled as part of the inquiry, and The Times' own review of e-mail logs from the administration, show that Todd Palin was a fixture in the governor's office, spending about half of his time there," the Los Angeles Times says. "He attended Cabinet meetings that are supposed to be closed to the public, and was copied on a wide variety of high-level government correspondence on issues such as contract negotiations with the police officers union, Alaska Native issues and the privatization of a dairy near the Palins' hometown of Wasilla."

Video: Gov. Sarah Palin has released a statement regarding the findings of a Legislative Council on the firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan. An MSNBC panel weighs in on the story.

The Sunday Boston Globe looks at Palin's early days as mayor: "Wasilla today reflects the results of her free-market approach to development. Running for a second mayoral term in 1999, Palin cited as one of her greatest successes luring a Fred Meyer mega-supermarket to Wasilla. The zoning plan, adopted over then-councilwoman Palin's opposition, proved no impediment for the store, which went up just a few feet from the banks of bucolic Lake Wasilla, with a parking lot that contains Kentucky Fried Chicken, Blockbuster Video, and Carl's Jr. They are among the dominant landmarks in a city that councilwoman Dianne Woodruff says 'looks like a big ugly strip mall from one end to the other.'"

More: "As a vice presidential candidate, Palin has suggested that a similar attitude toward growth would prevail nationally if she were elected. 'We will get out of the way of private-sector progress,' Palin said last week at a Colorado rally. 'It's the small business, the mom-and-pops, that are the cornerstone of America.'"

"Palin is keeping reporters at arms' length in her campaign, but she had a very different approach as Alaska's new governor: She couldn't get enough of them. ... [I]n 20 months as governor before McCain tapped her, Palin scheduled more than 300 interviews and press conferences, according to an Associated Press review of her official daily calendar. Among them, local TV reporter Bill McAllister of KTUU interviewed her on numerous occasions before he went to work for her as press secretary in August."

Anyone surprised?

Honestly though, this is merely a bump for McCain/Palin.  The Obama camp would be wise to simply let it go.  Keep on message.  Let the media ask the questions and keep the campaign (and surrogates) talking about the economy.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Interesting fact:

McCain/Palin is the ONLY major party ticket in US history (out of 102 tickets) in which BOTH candidates have been found guilty of ethics violations before inauguration day.

In other words, McCain/Palin is OFFICIALLY the most ethically corrupt ticket EVER! And yet they want us to believe that they will "reform WARshington" and eliminate abuses of power????
The Wicked Witch of Alaska is GUILTY of abuse of power, something she shares with her criminal running mate who abused power over 20 years ago.  This clearly shows that neither is fit for command.  Both should be in prison, not running for the White House.

Abuse of power is the specialty of the repugnant ones ever since "Trikcy Dick" Nixon.  We can never trust these white collar criminals to tell us the truth if they get in power.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
kickbacks are the republicans mantra

Debt limit Increase Bill...John voted Yeah
                          Barack voted Nay

Did anyone else notice that last Friday the McCain campaign's release regarding troopergate pointed out that Gov. Palin had the authority to 'reassign' Monegan?  Monegan was fired, discharged, sacked - not reassigned.  Funny how the Republicans have critizied Obama's speeches as being just words but then use a word to describe Palin's actions that is a complete distortion.  Oh well . . .
"...spending about half of his time there..."

As a woman, this reinforces every right wing, negative stereotype about women.  That without a man there to screen and filter the information, we couldn't possibly lead/govern/understand.

These two are scary on SO many levels.  I am more convinced than ever that 'they' use her celebrity and his 'ideology' and they are a PACKAGED deal.  Personally, I don't think I'd mind if Alaska seceded; but that isn't for two individuals to decide.

Further, I think she has her own testicular fortitude to rally on stage about "who IS Obama?".  Who the he!! is she?  In my opinion, her 15 minutes are over - if I never hear about Troopergate/Palin/Hockey ever again, I think I'd be A-OK with that.

PS.  Extremely revolting to hear that her STRATEGY at the Hockey game was to shield herself behind her six year old daughter.  What a loser.  One of my friends in VA indicated she felt little Trig had become nothing more than a 'prop'.  With her acknowledgment of how she uses her kids, I tend to agree.  Send her back to the Great North, eh 'abe?
To have an investigation for abuse of power after only 20 months in office - that's pretty remarkable.  It's obvious what authority does to this woman's ego, and she rivals Cheney.  There was a lot of discusssion about what role Bill Clinton would have played, had Hillary been elected.  The same must be said about Todd Palin.  The entire prospect of Palin anywhere near the White House is a nightmare scenario.
She would do the same thing if in the WH, no doubt
ABUSE OF POWER, STONEWALLING AND THEN LYING ABOUT BEING FOUND GUILTY,   That all sounds sooooooo familiar.  Where have we seen that before?

Oh thats right, the current administration BUSH/CHENEY.

We have already had eight years of ABUSE OF POWER, why would we want MORE OF THE SAME????

So much for all this "reformer" talk.

Sarah Palin is a LYING HYPOCRITE
We already have a corrupt VP we don't need another one.
this better be a BIG talking point. It was a casual aquiantance, it was directly involving her, and it was recent. Let's go folks, bring it up ALL the time, give them their own medicine.
Republicans can point their fingers at Obama and his tenuous links to things that have already been disproven, but here is a hit to them that has now been proven CONCLUSIVELY.

This could be the knockout blow we've been expecting to put the McCain/Palin ticket down for the count.
Palin Booed at hockey game!! Maverick!! Troopergate exposed!! Maverick!! Daughter pregnant!! Maverick!! Seen Santa Claus from Alaska!! Maverick!!
abused the powers of her office, Means just that ABUSED, do we really need this in the white house?? Think about this Just think
Just what we need --- another elected official who abuses power in washington.....Bush/Cheney mangled the Constitution but can you imagine this woman with the IRS, FBI, and NSA at her disposal!!!!!
Not only should mcgimmick/gimmick lose the election..but i hope the people of alaska wise up and vote this power-hungry liar out of office the first chance they get.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08
She can get away with journalists in Alaska but on the national scene she's running for cover:

No appearances on the Sunday Talk Shows . .
No answering questions from the media . . .
No answering questions from the public . . .
Refused to answer most questions during the VP debate . . .

Only "jouranlists" appearances have been on right-wing media . . . very safe and served up soft-ball questions.

Palin . . . untested, unsure, unsafe . . . a dangerous selection by a desperate McCain.
I think this shows that Sarah Palin cannot be trusted with confidential government information.  It seems we will be "buying one and getting one free".  I think John McCain and the party did not investigate thoroughly before making their decision and this may cost them the election.  Can you imagine Sarah and Todd running this country.  Especially with Todd's affiliation with a group that wanted Alaska not to be in the US. This is very dangerous.
The media has spent very little time looking at Palin's problems.  Where are the continous loops of her:
*abuse of power as governor;
*palling around domestic terrorist and separatists that want to strip stars from our flag and divide our nation;
*religion that includes a belief in witch and witchdoctors
*belief that homosexuality is a lifesyle choice;
charging rape victims for rape kit investigations.

She is not American like you and me.

McCain and Palin are dishonorable public officials running a dishonorable campaign.
Obama could never get this charge made against him. He's never done anything.
Palin is an absolute joke as a national politician candidate. Her record as a small town mayor is really not very good....but she can see Russia. What a string of gafffes.
Does this sound familiar. What other VP in the past has there been questions about abusing power. Hmmmm, who could that be. Palin has said she believes the Constitution gives these powers to the VP and she would like to see them expanded. We all know she isn't to sharp on the Constitution, as a child that finishes the 4th grade knows the VP is a part of the EXECUTIVE BRANCH and only has 1 function. 1 vote in the Senate and only gets to be exercised in the case of a tie. I got the feeling Ms Palin thinks she has some kind of influence over the Senate by being President of the Senate. Would someone in the McCain Campaign, although, they haven't a clue what the Constitution says tell her what her role will be in case the American people or just in case the Supreme Court puts them in office. I heard on Murdoch and Friends that SNL is causing her fall in the polls. Earth to the Murdoch Triplets, she is falling in the polls because the American People are on to her and her unadulterated BS. Go back to the Last Frontier where she can pull her BS where the national press doesn't see her ABUSE HER POWER.
Abuse of power is nothing new to the current administration and Palin would do much the same.
And this is nothing compared to what else is in her closet... What will she do as VP?

That's a scary thought!
THere you have it, the McCain Palin ticket is a joke, and they are stooping low. Its ugly. Why oh why did they choose her, worse yet why did the repubs choose McCane?
To say that she's keeping reporter's at arms' length is being mighty generous.  Do you think she'll be appearing on the Sunday political talk shows before the election, like  any "normal" candidate for such high office?  Not a chance!
That wasn't news for me. I already knew what she is made of.
Obama/Biden
It's terrifying to think that someone who, as an adult and govenor of a US State could behave this way.  The report shows that they repeatedly drilled for legitimate reasons to have Monegan fired... even after the disciplinary board conducted fair reviews that did not result in termination, they just kept right at it.  This reminds me of the sort of social fueds that snotty middle school girls might wage against each other.  I'm releaved to see that the American public is started to realize that the stakes are too high to put people like this in the highest office.
this is what happens then you let trash become a governer, here in illinois our governer is just as stupid as this chick!!! out governer got in to a public battle with his father in-law aldermen and was as stupid as this!! you must seperate business from personal issues, as tom hagen said in the GodFather Movie!!!
If anyone still needs more proof that she's not fit to be President (and thus by definition, Vice-President), you can listen to her interview with the local Alaska press here:

http://community.adn.com/adn/node/132625
I think Gov. Palin is comfortable with abuse of power. She not only uses her power unwisley in her home state as Gov. but on the national stage as Vice Presidential candidate. This young woman is not for us. She stirs up hate she know nothing about. She actually put her little girl in front of a crowd she
had already been warned about. Wise is not a attribute
you can apply to Gov. Palin.
I dont really hold this against Sara Palin, she joined a campaign that is being run by the Roves and his bush league lobbist. We should all know that McCain is not running his own campaign. He has done
things he knows is wrong, he has let these bushies run rough shod over him, just like they will do if hes elected. Gov Palin, was told you will be the pitt
bull, she agreed and here we are today. The republician party has two people at the top of their ticket who are not really ready to lead this country
out of our dire economic straights. Teh republician party is playing Palin like a drum, she will soon be discarded as toxic wast.
A note about Rep. Lewis, maybe he was a little extstreme in his statement about the McCain campaign
but he wasnt off base. I saw Moaning Joe go into spasms on his show this morning about the statement.
As a 62 year old white woman in S.C. I was there, I saw it all these long years ago, was praying we were past it. Joe S. you are wrong, real wrong. This is
hatemongering at its worse,  For you folks who are too young to remember, well you just had to be there.
Hope you will never see the things I have seen.

Obama/Biden
Marty
If elected, is Todd-o going to have a security clearance so he can sit in on all of our security briefings?  Financial briefings?  Will he have his own "Air Force Three"?
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooo!  This neo nazi soap opera dame is the worst candidate for vp this country's ever been presented.  Idiot Limbaugh and narrow minded Dobson sheep may like the lady's views but they also seem to enjoy the widening economic and culture gap in this country.  They immerse themselves in fear of anything unlike a Beaver Cleaver America...white and well off.  Eddie Haskel is their equivalent of having to deal with poverty, health problems, no job, etc.
This woman is such a contradiction!  I love how she cites bringing a mega-supermarket to her hometown as an achievement...then says in a rally that "it's the small business, the mom-and-pops, that are the cornerstone of America."  Wouldn't that be considered an "oxymoron"?  And doesn't that describe her quite well if you take off the "oxy" part?!
It seems she did have something to hide...no wonder other hockey moms booed her this weekend.

I heard over the weekend that Palin actually ordered the size of her personal security detail drastically cut. Sounds like a woman living in fear to me...
And what IS up with this First Dude stuff?  Alaskans seem to have gotten a two-for in their governor, but do we really want a two-for in our next VP?  Especially when the two-for includes a guy who has been palin'around with successionists whose founder blew himself up making a bomb?
Todd and Sarah were co Governors of Alaska.  He should be getting confidential emails nor should he be present in meetings closed to the public.  Her poor judgement as a governor on this matter is extremely troubling to me.  How could she dare question Barack Obama's judgement.
If Obama can sweep Ayers under the rug the GOP should do the same with this ! Although Ayers is a MUCH worse infraction and disgrace to this country, as ia Obama. Those 2 are one in the same. Both hate this country and can't wait to destroy it !
Where is the outrage over this?  In times past, a VP candidate who was found guilty of this type of charge would have been forced off the ticket.  I don't understand the apathy I've seen over the weekend in the media and among people I know.  Surely we, as a people, understand that a person who will abuse her power as Governor would also abuse her power as VP. Senator McCain should be held accountable for choosing such an unworthy running mate and sticking with her in the face of this finding.  His judgment has proven to be pitiful in this most important decision. Again, I ask, where is the outrage?
Just a family squabble on steroids, and the fact it was allowed to get to this level speaks volumes about Governor Palin's maturity and readiness for prime time.
Palin is nothing more than a wrecklessly agressive, arrogant, ex-beauty queen who thinks she is god's gift.
A verified Abuse of Power.  Go home, Sarah.  There are wolves to shoot, and millions of acres to spoil back home.
I really dont get it.  Palin was found to have abused her power while Governor of Alaska, but the news media has said very little about it and how it parallels her running for the 2nd highest office in the country.  This is serious business.  This woman may be our President if something should happen to McCain.  Why is this not being discussed more?
So the Alaska legislature concluded that she abused her power?  Hmm, that’s interesting considering they also concluded that “Governor Palin’s firing of Commissioner Walt Monegan was a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority to hire and fire executive branch department heads.” citing the Alaska Constitution, which says “the governor may discharge department heads without cause.”

First let's get a couple of things straight.

1.  Trooper Michael Wooten is a wife beater.
2.  Trooper Michael Wooten as a state trooper is a "State" employee and as such, the governor can still fire him without cause as well.
3.  Walt Monegan was not fired as the press so conveniently keeps reporting.  Monegan was told he was to be reassigned to head the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.  Monegan didn't like that idea, so "He Quit."  He quit, he was not fired.

As governor, if I found out that a state trooper on my force was a wife beater, I would have fired his ass.  I'm not going to have people in uniform who are supposed to uphold the law, caring guns, be allowed to go around beating their wives and stay on the force.
Big surprise
"You canno say you're a maverick if all you've ever been is a sidekick" - Joe Biden

These same rules apply to Mrs. Palin who is sidekick to her husband, the Real Governor Palin...

*Sigh* so much for being an outsider...
Hockey mom shops at the strip mall and eat's Carls Jr. Hmm... and she thinks that's good for America? A bunch of Mom and Pop businesses that make up ugly strip malls across the nation? I think we are better than that. Besides, she would ABUSE HER POWER, to make these malls fixtures across the nation. Oh, yeah.. that's right she is only using this supposed accomplishment to further her political career because she voted against the zoning change that couldn't stop the development of this eyesore in Wasilla...

Is this who you want in the White House people????? PULLLEEEZZZZZ!!!!!!!

Obama/Biden 08
Wow, this short article tells a lot about Sarah Palin behind the rhetoric.

Husband Todd "attended Cabinet meetings that are supposed to be closed to the public..."  Aren't there Alaskan state statutes that would prevent this?  This is unethical behavior in itself.

"It's the small business, the mom-and-pops, that are the cornerstone of America."  You are referring to national and international corporate chain stores as "mom-and-pops"?  Oh please...we see where your loyalties are.  You are and will continue to be in the pocket of big business.
Let's just call the facts here. Sara Palin is kept away from the media because she's not smart enough to be a vice presidential candidate. She is one of the best ever at reading a teleprompter but thats where it ends for her. This pick was a gimmick by a candidate who likes to take risks. In 23 days the American people will deliver the verdict on Sara Palin and I believe they will choose to send the Wasilla hillbillies back to Alaska!
Palin did the "dirty" in this matter.  Not only was she tried and convicted of abusing power and violating ethics, now she is lying about the whole matter.  To hear her talk, she thinks it is some kind of joke.  Now folks, that is sad.
Maybe she needs a new prescription in the glasses so that she can read the report.  Better still, maybe someone can read it to her!!
