Bob Barr campaigning in VA

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- McCain and Obama aren’t the only two presidential candidates who are vying for swing state votes.

Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee and former Georgia congressman, visited Lynchburg College here yesterday afternoon. In fact, he will spend the next 10 days in Virginia and Ohio stumping around colleges, which he calls them the “bread and butter” of his campaign.

In true libertarian fashion, Barr's first remark in his speech to students was that “you guys must be from the government” -- in response to his microphone not working.

He blamed the current economic situation on the “benevolent hand of government,” calling the government a “vacuum of leadership.” He said, “These [economic] problems were not only foreseeable but foreseen,” and stressed that the economic situation is “not a failure of economic policy but of leadership.”

Barr focused on the need to understand the role of government and policy rather than the “clouds of rhetoric coming out of Washington.” And he said that he believes the role of the president is to “protect and demand and expand our freedom,” and he expressed his frustration with the rhetoric of the 2008 presidential campaign.

Later in an interview, Barr said Palin is not qualified to be vice president or to handle the demands of the presidency. “No, I don’t [believe she is qualified]... You have to have more experience than she does,” Barr said.

“Overall, both Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama want more and see government as the solution to our problems. I and the Libertarian Party see the people as the solution,” Barr said.

“Whether they are a hockey mom or a soccer dad or how many houses they have or whether they like lapel pins ... or who they might have had coffee with or had lunch with 20 years ago that might have been a strange person... And just get that out of the way, and then get down to the real business of deciding whether or not these men and women are qualified to sit across the table from the leader of an adversarial nation that clearly does not have our interests at heart or in mind, whether or not they are equipped, at least philosophically, to understand the complex issues involving the 21st century economy that we are in.”

Barr stressed the necessity of the media to ask the tough questions, calling the media “terribly irresponsible” for focusing on what he believes are the wrong issues. But untimely blames the candidates and parties for “trivializing the important issues and raising unimportant issues to the level of presidential concern,” Barr said in the interview.

It's nice that a candidate can say exactly what he or she thinks without fear of losing votes.

It's sad that that candidate has to be a 'third-party' candidate.

Bob Barr is just another form of conservative lunatic fringe thinking but the nice thing is that he will siphon off more votes from McNasty than Nader will from Obama.  I hope he campaigns a lot in Georgia to help Obama turn that red state blue.

Hey how about "Socialist" Bush making all the conservative free marketers mad at him?  I find it so funny that the repugnant ones are eating each other alive and showing a disarray that's hilarious for us liberals to enjoy watching.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
What about Bob ?  He's Al kinda isen't he Senator McCain?
Bob Barr is the only real conservative in the running and it is time - if you hadn't noticed the financial crisis, that this country get a strong third party.  Two party partisanship is largely to blame for government and financial problems.  I was a Huckabee voter and would have voted for McCain but his campaign has been stupid and Palin is just not ready for prime time.  I'm presently a republican but am going to change my affiliation to Libertarian.
I don't know much about Barr, but he seems like a straight-shooter from what I've read.

BARTENDER, A BEER FOR ME AND MR. BARR OVER HERE!  IT'S ON ME!
But but but...those lapel flag pins are all that seperate us from the terrorists...yer either fer or yer agin' us
Keep this up!  You're only helping Obama:  You slam Bush and McCain and draw away unenthused conservatives.  Georgia and Virginia might just turn Blue!
Great job Barr!  I hope you reach some critical right-leaning swing voters that are as embarrassed as the rest of us about the Palin debacle.  Thanks for choosing swing states!  Makes me think donating to your campaign.
Thank you for covering the Libertarian campaign.  It is quite nice to hear viewpoints other than the tiresome Republican and Democratic rhetoric for once.
The true conservative party in this country is not the GOP.  It is the Libertarian Party.  Too bad they don't get the respect they deserve from the MSM.

BTW, Bob Barr certainly isn't endorsing any candidate other than himself, but from his comments I get the feeling he would rather see Obama as president than McCain.  Interesting.
Is Bob Barr calculated in the national polls, if so, what effects are his numbers reflecting on the candidates, needs answers, no one is reporting on this equation!
Bob Barr should be invited to the debate on Wednesday...that would atleast make it interesting as the other 2 blowhards just talk circles around each other without saying anything of value
My only problem with Barr is that he wrote the Patriot Act and now he is for liberties. That is really funny. But hey anything to dilute the McBush vote is fine with me.
If I thought he had a prayer of winning I would vote for Barr. But since America isn't ready for a Libertarian, I'm voting for Obama.
Right, crazy Barr tried to cause a dust-up in Texas with some silly suit about timely filings in the general election.

He should check out some group in East Texas that reportedly screwers the county elections with folks in who reside in RV's for the moment, but aren't really residents...the Escapees, Inc.

Bush was appointed in 2000 by the Supreme Court, who should have recused themselves, since they were all Bushies!

Bush stole Ohio in 2004!

ACORN- who cares!

Sounds like Barr Has Harsh words for the McCain Campaign.  Schmit/Davis can't be happy with this.
A lot of people like Bob Barr and he will get a small percentage of votes. Many conservatives will support Barr instead of McCain.

Speaking of conservatives:  Pat Buchanan turns 70 next month. I'm hoping the folks as MSNBC gives him a combined birthday and retirement party.
Bob Barr may indeed get some of the McCain votes, but
he wont get any Obama votes, another blockade for Mccain. I sort of like the way the Liberterians talk
but their solutions are for a far simpler time. Wish
they were right and we could go back about 50 years.
MSNBC, do you ever get tired of people complaning
about Joe Scarbourgh, That is the worst show on the air. I watch him to get my A.M. political fix. It really helps me get going in the morning, gets my heart pumping and my blood flowing, from anger, he is the snottist, nastiest, rudest man I have ever seen.
Pat B. is a teddy bear compared to Moaning Joe. Hope someone at the excutive level will watch some of his
childish rants and see how silly he looks. I can hardley believe he was a congressman, but we did vote GWB into office twice, well he stole it but Joe probley did too, it couldnt have been his intelligence.

Obama/Biden
marty
They should have run Ron Paul

Paul's foreign policy is the best ANY candidate has espoused in YEARS !!

End the American Empire

America is a REPUBLIC NOT an EMPIRE

Enough of Enterventionism in support of Corporations and investment Banks

End the Warfare State

Stop the War Machine
I'll bet he just loves the thought that Big Gummint is nationalizing everything in sight!
Too bad, Impeachment Bob---theera of golden-shower trickle-down voo doo econdemonics is over. Laissez-faire Capitalism is as dead as the do-do. You and Scarborough and Gingrich go cry in your beers somewhere.

Bob,
You're my hero. Don't leave Virginia, Ohio and may be NC and PA until Nov 4

H
Mark - is this the first time or state Bob Barr has campaigned?

Why are you media folks deciding now to cover where he campaigns.

No matter what - Barack Obama will win Virginia - by a large amount in which Bob Barr presents won't even be noticed.

Enough already!

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
I've been waiting to see if Bob Barr or Ralph Nader would show up before Nov. 4th. How come MSNBC isn't trying to make the race "closer" by throwing in these two losers into the mix? First Read is really trying to push a McCain "come back" isn't it? Pleeze. Let the old man go out to pasture......he's earned it; afterall, he's a POW.          Obama/Biden '08/'12
God bless Bob Barr! He's gonna take votes away from McCain! That means Virginia and Ohio are definately Obama's!
Now be sure to attend my next stump speech.  I'll be in downtown Market Square in Portsmouth, NH from 4:10 to 4:11.
and that's how relevant THIS is!
Speaking of third party candidates, has anyone checked lately to see if Ralph Nader still has a pulse?
wow bob barr wrote the patriot act? He must be pretty smart since obama voted for it
hey marty from columbia ,with Obama in the white house we will be going back 50 years. The DNC platform hasnt changed since then. Obama is a hack democrat that always voted with Pelosi and Reid(much more often than Mc Cain voted with Bush). His own party did not respect him when he sponsored bills as a senator, only 3 of the hundreds he sponsored made it out of the democratic majority committees he was on.(govtrack.us)
I don't think he can change things much if his own party think his ideas belong in the trash can!
Barr will only take away votes from the Republicans. No worries here!

Yesterday Obama introduced his Economic Strategic Plan = the Dow SHOOTS UP 937 points

Today McCain introduces his Economic Plan = the Dow DROPS DOWN 200+ points so far!!

JUST A COINCIDENCE?  I DOUBT IT!

PEOPLE HAVE WAY MORE CONFIDENCE IN BARACK OBAMA!!

Barr is right.  Palin is unqualified.  It doesn't matter what McCain proposes.  As long as Palin is on the ticket, Americans won't vote for him.  Can you imagine a president Palin meeting with world economic leaders?  I'm voting for the smart and educated team of Obama/Biden.
Bob Barr.....Who is Bob Barr.....LOL

Obama/Biden 08
Joe Scarbourgh is the worst person to have on in the mornings.  I really hate to start the day watching Joe belittle Mika and carry water for the Republicans.  His comment this morning on the Ayers and the fact that Obama is black shows that he is looking for a position in the McCain administration or that he just can't stand to be a loser.  He is a whiney little snot.
