The debate: The reviews are in

Posted: Thursday, October 16, 2008 9:27 AM by Domenico Montanaro

MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell and Adam Verdugo report on a Missouri focus group they covered watching last night’s debate: “Voters in the focus group they did not like the John McCain that showed up. The Republican failed to convince independents in this bellwether state, and the attacks on Obama may have backfired. We brought together 27 voters: 10 Democrats, nine independents, and eight Republicans. At the end of the debate 20 said it was Obama who had won the debate. McCain's repeated negative attacks turned off the independents, according to our survey with dial testers or "perception analyzers." When McCain brought up Obama's controversial relationship with the 1960's radical Bill Ayers, the line measuring independent reactions plummeted into negative territory.”

“McCain's best moment was when he focused on policy, specifically finding alternative sources of energy. His ratings with all voters, including Democrats, improved when he mentioned the need to develop wind, solar, and nuclear energy sources. Obama also scored well with all the voters when he too mentioned ending our dependence on foreign oil.”

“Our survey was indicative as to why McCain is having trouble connecting with voters in these final three weeks of the campaign. They want a focus on the issues and they don't like gimmicks. McCain clearly went into tonight's debate trying to score points with working class voters by telling the ‘Joe the Plumber’ story. But interestingly, the voters in our focus group didn't like the story. One Republican, Marc, said he'd heard enough of ‘Joe the Plumber’ and ‘Joe Six-Pack.’ John, an independent, said he didn't get the story because he didn't know any plumbers making more than $250,000 per year. And Dave, a Democrat, said he was disappointed that McCain was using a voter Obama had met with to score a political point, instead of talking about a voter McCain had met with.”

“Finally, we tested voters reactions pre and post debate. Independents before the debate said they were slightly more comfortable with McCain as president. But after the debate, independents were much more comfortable with Obama as president. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being most comfortable:
-- Obama comfort as president before the debate: 6.2
-- Obama comfort as president after the debate: 7.4
-- McCain comfort as president before: 6.4
-- McCain comfort as president after: 4.3.”

The Washington Post’s Tom Shales calls McCain’s line on Obama comparing him to Bush the best one of the night. But he also says that McCain and his body language didn’t fair well from the split screen on TV. “On the split screen, viewers could see Obama laughing at charges made by McCain, a reaction that did seem to diminish the charges. Viewers also could see McCain looking somehow inflated and aloof. Sometimes he struck such a lofty pose that he could have been posing for a spot on Mount Rushmore. Other times, he looked as though he might explode.”

Writes the New York Times’ Stanley: “It was Mr. McCain’s last chance to cast doubt on his opponent’s character and credentials, and he threw the kitchen sink at him — along with the plumber. Mr. McCain invoked class war, culture war and the Iraq war. He cast himself as a victim of a Democratic attack machine, calling Representative John Lewis’s reference to former Gov. George Wallace of Alabama in criticizing the McCain-Palin campaign for stirring up the crowds ‘so hurtful.’ They were seated, and this time, Mr. McCain made a point of looking at Mr. Obama, if often with a disdainful smirk and roll of the eyes. He kept taking out his pen to write on his yellow pad, almost as though it were a surrogate for reaching across and throttling the younger man he does not think should be challenging him because, as his aides put it, he hasn’t bled.”

The Boston Globe's Canellos writes that McCain was "barely hiding his disdain for" Obama, but called Obama "sometimes too cool" and "seemed more amused than offended" by McCain's attacks.

McCain loss the election even before he started his campaing for the following reason. As Senator McCain has showed his unbalanced state of emotions, character, anger, and the explosiveness of his temper. I just can't imagine McCain as president and dealing with the major issues and contraversies of the office. His erratic swings of temper can jeopardize his process to make logical decisions to resolve critical issues. He acts like a spolied child when things are not going his way.
Did anyone else notice how McCain kept sticking his tongue out?  It really made him look almost reptilian- like one of those invaders from the TV mini-series 'V'.
I cannot for the life of me understand why the media is leaving out Sara Palin and her ties her husband has to the separitist party of Alaska..why are there not questions asked of this..why was this not brought up in last night's debate?
john mc cain has become progressively more unravelled thru this process and tonight looked most unstatesman-like. age and pressure are taking their toll and this is not the man we need at this time - perhaps in 2000, buy not now - particularly with sarah likely to succeed him. they both drip disdain and disrespect for those unlike themselves (obama tops the list)
Re: Body Lanuage. I didn't care much for McCain before last night's debate, but after having to look at that condescending smirk on his face all evening, I think he's an arrogant, overinflated old man. I've voted republican for the past 24 years, but I'm voting for Obama on Nov. 4th. There's no question about whose really on top of the issues, and who I'd like to represent the United States.
If Joe the Plumber is actually making more than $250K/year, then he needs to help clear up the national debt, so his son does not inherit it.
Let's remember:
Reagan Raised Taxes!
"Read My Lips" Bush Raised Taxes!
"W" brouught in more tax revenue than any President in history and doubled our debt.
McCain admitted last night that he woudl RAISE TAXES by making healthcare a taxable benefit.
Why do Americans continue to accept the brainwashing that the Rupublican party is the "fiscally conservative" party.  It seems nothing could be farther than the truth.
And whole all this is going on I just received an article Emailed to me from Steve Young On Politics that "Joe the Plumber" (the article uses Joe's last name) is NOT a plumber buying a business, is NOT listed in the Yellow Pages and is NOT even registered to vote!!  Don't you all find this interesting and the article goes on to say....Did McCain find this guy in Central Casting??
Let's get to the real topics that affect the country. I'm tired of their attacks between each other, I want to know how we can get out of this mess.  It looks like Obama is more focus on what matters to the people, than all the McCain attacks...
Congratulations on a well written article and accurate blog, MSNBC!

THE FACTS ARE NOW IN, AND NEXT IT'S TIME FOR THE PEOPLE (VOTERS) TO DO THE TALKING WHILE SEN. MCCLAIN DOES THE WALKING!

SEN. OBAMA HAS WAGED A BRILLIANT CAMPAIGN AROUND THE ISSUES AND NOT THE RHETORIC AND DOGMA OF UNINFORMED, MUD-SLINGING, "CIGAR-FILLED ROOMS" POLITICS OF THE PAST, AND HE HAS EARNED THE RIGHT AND RESPECT TO BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT DURING THE INTERESTING AND GLOBAL TROUBLED TIMES IN WHICH WE LIVE...

Cheers,

"Doc"
I finally get the McBlinky reference.  I think it's a nervous tick.  My vote remain with Senator Obama.
Boom badda bing Obama.  Next pres of the US.  Get ready world.  We all are going to get what we wanted.  But, careful what you want.  It may want you too.  Obama 08!
"Obama laughing at charges made by McCain"?!?  I didn't see it that way.  It looked more like he was trying to keep his cool in the light of McCain's charges against him.  And he did his best to dodge them.

I did notice that, once this started happening, the split-screen view of both candidates that had been the primary display up to that point (at least on NBC) was quickly shifted to a shot of only McCain.  Was there a problem with the viewing public being shown Obama's response under pressure?  I'm *sure* there was no media bias involved in this fairly-presented campaign.

My compliments to the moderator, Bob Schieffer.  Definitely the best of the bunch.
Time now for the "Straight Talk Express" Sen. McCain to express his regret for distracting the American electorate with pathetic negative attacks, rather than being "straight" with the public on the issues at hand.  In addition, McCain needs to fully explain his campaign's four-hour vetting process of Gov. Palin: an addition to his ticket that may, ultimately, prove his demise in this campaign.

John McCain's honor, as shown many times during his 2000 campaign against then-Governor Bush, has been relegated to the trash-heap of history due to the assistance of President Bush's attack dogs. He has those surrogates, and his mean demeanor to blame if he loses this contest.
ALSO, NOTE McCAIN'S REMARKS REGARDING HIS VP.  NOTHING I HEARD INSTILLED ANY CONFIDENCE IN ME AS FAR AS HER QUALIFICATIONS TO BE PRESEIDENT.  SHE'S A JOKE.
McCain seemed very aware of the questions & corrected Bob Schieffer on one, did he know the questions ahead of time?  and please, enough with Ayers, it's been addressed & answered more than a few times!  it's not an issue & never was for most
I would like to know the minutes of each one's time allowed to speak. McCain continuously interupted Obama and regularly would get to attack, I mean respond, AT LEAST one additional answer per question. It was unbelievable
It was hard for McCain to say that he was the winner.  There was little chance for him to anything that would put him on top.  The only way for McCain to have won is for Obama to have made a huge mistake.  Obama never did; remained calm and collected.  McCain is failing do "seal the deal;" look at CNN's map.  McCain is behind by 100 points and they have Obama over the 270 needed.
I saw that Sen. McCain was like an ‘old angry lion’. However, did far better than I expected. On the other hand, Obama was calm –I wanted him to show little aggressiveness though. Or may be this is his style. What surprises me is that today morning I saw Sen. Joe Biden’s comment on ‘Good morning America’ regarding the last night debate. WHERE IS SARAH PALIN? Now I know Obama, Biden and McCain---I do not know McCain’s running mate. How long will his running mate hide from reporters and press? Don’t we have rights to know the running mate’s too—to make the decision? McCain’s judgment and keeping his running mate as ‘mystery’ puzzles me. McCain’s running mate please, if it is really ‘Country first’ then come out and make yourself visible to common people.

Senator McCain is just a nasty piece of work.

What I find amusing is the fact that both Palin and McCain are calling themselves reformers when in fact, they are the ones benefitting from "deals". Palin not paying for materials for her house, and McCain getting free cell phone towers on his ranch. (I guess Barbie's granny needs her billions for her shopping sprees).  What a couple of lowlifes.
If "Joe-the-Plumber" is actually bringing in $280K per year he is definitely no "Average Joe".....he would be in the top 5% of all americans and increasing his taxes by 4% (under Obama's plan) will not hurt him or change his lifestyle.....

Obama/Biden 08

McCain, somewhat inexplicably, so very easily sold his soul to the Christian Right. Well beyond that crossroad, the bloodied warrior is presently witnessing what it really means to sleep with the devil.

I am going to vote for obama. The only thing I was diappointed in with the last debate is that Obama
didn't speak about Sarah Palin in not being
the best candidate for Vice President. After all
her foreign policy experience leans on the fact
that she can see Russia from her home. That will make a great leader, God Forbid!
I'm surprised McCain's dismissive 'health' of the mother air quotes after he dismissed Obama's charge that the life and health of the mother must be protected in any late-term abortion bans.

I've spoken to many independents who said that was a big turn-off.

IMO, Obama has throughout his campaign, as well as during debates, been focused on the needs of we (the people, primarily the middle class), affordable health care for every American, a college education plan for our children (as they say, a mind is a terrible thing to waste due to financial constraining reasons), lowering the taxes of the middle class, etc... while McCain and Palin have spent a majority of their time wallowing in the mud, tossing proposterous propaganda around that has nothing to do with where the focus should be as to concerns that really matter to a majority of Americans, and worse yet the hate mongering that comes with insinuating that Obama is anything but the honorable man he has proven himself to be at many of their rallies (shame on McCain and Palin).  I honor the military service of John McCain; however, in my opinion it has nothing to do with his being able to serve as President at this time in our country, especially at this time in our history ... as for his pit bull attack side kick Palin, she is in no way is ready/able or even has the knowledge/insight to serve as VP (much less President) if McCain was no longer able to do so (I find it mind boggling that he would have selected her to begin with).  If I was to go into a hospital to have major surgery, I would want the best surgeon performing my operation (having the proven credentials) and a stand-in that could take over if necessary ... having a stand-in surgeon like Palin would put my life at risk, just as having a stand-in like Palin as VP would put the safety, world standing, and general well being of our country in extreme risk and peril.
