100,000 rally for Obama in St. Louis

Posted: Saturday, October 18, 2008 3:03 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Obama rallied 100,000 people underneath St. Louis’ Gateway Arch on Saturday, according to St. Louis police -- his biggest event in America to date -- and laid out the differences between himself and his rival on taxes and other issues.

Speaking underneath the landmark near the banks of the Mississippi River, Obama called taxes a values issue and said McCain’s proposals valued wealth more than the work that creates it. He refuted McCain’s criticism that his plan to provide tax cuts for 95 percent of Americans would amount to “welfare” for the 40 percent the Arizona senator says don’t pay federal income taxes. Obama said he would only provide a tax break to people who are paying payroll taxes.

“John McCain is so out of touch with the struggles you’re facing that he must be the first politician in history to call a tax cut for working people “welfare,” he said. “Well, let me tell you, the only “welfare” in this campaign is John McCain’s plan to give another $200 billion in tax cuts to the wealthiest corporations in America -- including $4 billion in tax breaks to big oil companies that ran up record profits under George Bush. That’s who John McCain’s fighting for. I’m fighting for you.”

The Obama campaign has consistently sought to paint the Illinois senator as a champion for working people and his rival as beholden to big companies, special interests and the rich. Their effort has been helped by  massive spending on advertising in key areas.

The senator went on to deliver his usual stump speech, at one point calling McCain’s health care plan “cockamamie”, a term McCain used earlier this week to refer to Biden’s proposal to divide Iraq and he repeated his campaign’s argument that McCain wants to distract the American public with attacks in the final weeks of the campaign, making an indirect reference to the robocalls voters in several states have reported receiving that link Obama to 60’s radical William Ayers.

“America is ready for change and yet even as we face the most serious economic crisis of our time; even as you are worried about keeping your jobs or paying your bills or staying in your homes, my opponent’s campaign announced earlier this month that they want to quote “turn the page” on the discussion about our economy so they can spend the final weeks of this election attacking me instead,” he said. “You guys have seen the ads, some of you are getting the phone calls. Sen. McCain’s campaign actually said, and I quote, “if we keep on talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.”

Obama was introduced by Missouri Attorney General -- and gubernatorial candidate -- Jay Nixon, who predicted more problems at polling places in Democratic areas on Election Day than Republican ones, and by Sen. Claire McCaskill. McCaskill responded to a comment McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin made recently the seemed to question the patriotism of Americans in certain places.

“It doesn’t matter whether you live in a small town in “Missouri or whether you’re right here in St. Louis -- show America right now how we all are proud Americans!,” she said, prompting chants of U-S-A. “We have reached a new low in American politics when someone dares to say that one part of America is more pro America than another part of America!”

She called McCain’s campaign “petty” and said it was worried about the new voters who would be participating this election year.

“You have one campaign that is mean, angry, personal, petty, small bogus attacks,” she said. “They’re frozen into fear of the idea that we have millions of new people in America that want to participate. While one campaign is trying to distract America with small, petty, unfair personal attacks, the other campaign is focused like a laser on you.”

Amazing!  Wow!  Hey, guys, did you google the Obama barns?  Need to do that!
It appears the American people are more intelligent
than the republicans give us credit for.
We are not buying the sleeze, hate and fear
Mccain/palin are spewing.
ENOUGH!!
Breathtaking.
The sight of all those anti-Americans bring tears of joy to my eyes!!!!

You see, if you really want to travel in reverse with blinders and limited visibility put the lever to R. However, it looks like Americans prefer to move forward and will pull the lever to D - this way the road before us is maneuverable the skies are blue and the sun is shining.

Obama draws his largest rally crowd in a RED state. Think about it!
100,000..... WOW

have you seen the pictures?

People want CHANGE!!!!!

AMAZING!
Just returned from voting for Obama/Biden here in Las Vegas. First day of early voting and already long lines; people are soooo tired of McCains' negative ads.
WOW! This is the most amazing picture I've ever seen from a campaign trail. I wish I could have been there. I can feel a very strong Obama wave surging across VA. Here in Centreville, Virginia, I have never seen so many Obama Sign ever! In 2000 and 2004, there were 4 to 1 Bush signs and now it's the other way around. Everyone that I know that voted for Bush is not voting for Obama. Even my grandparents (who are in their 80's and live in Lynchburg, VA) are voting Obama and they told me they haven't voted for a democrat since Roosevelt.
McBush could not turn out 5,000 much less than 100,000....We Americans will not vote Hate Or Fear this year and thats ALL McBush has...Hate Fear nothing about the issues that Americans care about.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08
With Obama attracting crowds of 100,000 in Red states and McCain lucky to attact a few hundred if Palin is with him, is there any question about the outcome in this election.
Amen, Amen, Amen! Never in all of my years of voting have I seen an election such as this! I agree with everybody who states that John McCain will "DO ANYTHING AND SAY ANYTHING TO WIN!  How the mighty fall!
I Love It!!!!!
Obama and Biden represent the American Dream
One Nation, Under God

Mccain/Palin represent separation and hatred everything America should not be about.

Go Obama/Biden08

vote,vote,vote,vote,vote
YES WE CAN GET RID OF McCAIN!!!
YES WE CAN GET RID OF McCAIN!!!
YES WE CAN GET RID OF McCAIN!!!
YES WE CAN GET RID OF McCAIN!!!
YES WE CAN GET RID OF McCAIN!!!
YES WE CAN GET RID OF McCAIN!!!
GATEWAY ARCH... AMAZING
dear john, karma baby karma......
Welfare? Socialism? Why did the Republicans wait until someone starting talking about cutting taxes for the bottom 95% of us that they started calling names? We've put up with 8 years of massive tax cuts for the rich and corporations. 2/3 of American corporations don't even pay tax now under the Republicans' policies! And didn't we just give AIG $87 billion and investment bankers $700 billion? That's not welfare?  That's not socialism? Please - I think we're smarter than that.
on the bag.... obama /biden all the way.....landslide is coming....macain favorite word is i have a plan...plan to go back to arizona....palin in alaska.......obama in the white house.......
It was great!!!!!  I was there and I got plenty to be happy about.  We are turning Missouri Blue again!!!!  No more Mccain
Geez you have to see this photo....
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/10/18/obama-rally-draws-100000-in-missouri/

Hey John...Damn you and your lies... this is America, this photo of thousands and thousands of people of every color and faith standing together for each other and all of us. This is America, not the crowds of bigots and hate that you and Palin are ginning up but this photo right here in the middle of this land.
Keep swinging Claire.  The McCain campaign today asked Real Virginians to stand up.  The divisive campaign of McCain/Palin needs to end.

There is no red America or blue America, but the United States of America.

Obama / Palin '08

holy @#$%! Try stopping this tidal wave, robo calls!
This was the largest group of people I've seen in one area in St. Louis.  There was easily more than 100,000 people there, Barack spoke early, people were still arriving as he was finishing speaking.  The crowd was absolutely breath-taking.
well delivered!! Obama is on the path to victory.
This picture was truly inspiring. Mr. Obama brings out the best in all of us; a desire to participate in the future of our country.
40 percent? Surely Senator McCain realizes "40 percenters" also vote....or does he just dismiss us?
I just saw 25 mins of McShame on MSNBS and 15 mins of Senator Obama why is ? Joe the Plummer is a lair he makes somewhere in between $40 plus what is going on McShame put this lair into this race he doesn’t even have a license!!! What is going on? Please media report facts only And Palin is a lair, I just find this outrageous!!!!
From the photo on the WSJ website it sure looks as though there were more like a half million people, and friends who were there say they thought there were even more than that. Unbelievable, possibly the largest ever political rally.
After this week of really nasty stuff thrown at him by mcshame, the robo calls and ACORN fighting and all the rest, this just shows that it was not effective for 100,000 Missourians who said "show me.'  And he did. We are living in a great time when we are seeing a great American rise to the needs of the country.  We are privileged to have him serving us. I am deeply touched by Obama's personna and his ability to draw crowds and the way he reaches out to the whole country and internationally as well.  I think history will record himas  one of the truly great leaders. I get goosebumps looking at the picture posted on WSJ.
I am retired USN and a Disabled Vet. I was in the Navy for the Nam conflict. Mc Same will not help VET's.. He is a Liar. I am An American Fighting Sailor. I live in IA so this does not make me pro American. Tho I am disabled from fighting for this land. I reckon All those folks in this Picture i saw  on the WSJ's sight aren't very pro Ameriian either. Palin thinks we live in the non American part of the USA.. Give Em' Hell  And Clair from MO siad it best just like Harry from MO said ....

Give Em' Hell CLAIR!!!! Bill, A Disabled vet in IA (Not Pro American part of the country)
amazing....so what does this say about 'true americans'...there are at least 100,000 in St. Louis who came to listen...which is what all americans need to do...listen
all mccain has got left is hate hate & more hate. hes like a rat in a corner whose about to be slautered. i as im sure like many others are really tired of all his hate.if this is what campaining has come to its no wonder the world looks at us as a joke. palin belonds on snl shes the biggest joke of all.
I am so proud to be a patriotic American from a large city. Sarah Palin again spoke without thinking when she said that some places are more pro American then others. Later she tried to clarify, but usually people say what they mean the first time.
My vote will be cast for Barack Obama and Joe Biden because they represent the changes which we as a nation need, and we as individuals want.

All the  hypocrisy, lies and vehemence spewed by Sarah Palin has washed away the last remaining dignity of a once great senator from Arizona.
John McCain needs to think Country First and stop casting aspersions upon Barack Obama regarding a tenuous relationship with a'60s radical. Mc Cain needs to get back to the issues at hand and perhaps he may be able to salvage a bit of what is still honorable in him.
McBush and Palin eat your heart out! Do you see this? 100,000 people to listen to issues and positive talk. Not to hear stoking hate , fear, racism and division in America. We will join Obama to see a better and united America. We are tired of all this dirty and nasty politics McCain and Palin have brought to this election, they should be ashamed, this says a lot about the Republican party. Is this the best candidates they had? They are destroying the Party. VOTE FOR A TRUE LEADER OBAMA/BIDEN 08
2008, the year Americans took back our country! I'm so happy! How about a beautiful photo of the crowds to go along with this story?
I'm really proud of senator Obama and his campaign.  Makes me believe in America again. This is one old Republican white woman that's voting for hope in Mr. Obama.
Where are the pictures and video?
This is great to see today the turn out for Obama! The thousands of people attending the rallies need to all vote Obama-Biden on November 4. "Remember New Hampshire!" The Republicans are going out of their way to illegally suppress the peoples right to vote again in 2008. Remember, our right to vote is God given. No political party or the President at anytime has the right to take that away. The Repubicans succeeded doing this in 2000, 2004, and in 2006. Do not let them get away with it using clever legal tricks in 2008. Fight for your right to vote my fellow Americans! Millions of American now, and in our nations past have died to preserve this God given right for all of us. Call or write your representatives, and let them know clearly that enough is enough!Let them know that voting is not just for Republicans only. Now in 2008, the President appears to be illegally over stepping his power in working with the Republican Campaign. For the sake of our Democracy. I hope not!
WooHoo!!!!!!!!  Go St. Louis!!!!!!!!!!  100,000 wow, thats huge. I will watch to see if Keith and Rachel report on this.  Go MSNBC.  Loved the way McShame mentioned you guys in his speech.  Let's me know he's worried about you!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama/Biden 08

Clinton will be here tomorrow in Las Vegas, can't wait.

No way,
No how,
No McShame/Frallin
Obama draws 100.000 talking issues and John McCain draws 5,000 in North Carolina making attacks and talking half truths.. John can you see the writing on the wall..
John I think it is pathetic what you are doing,attacts.. lies..half truths, maybe that is why so many smart and moral Republicans are jumping ship. You have no one to blame, but yourselves, for losing this election. You just don’t get it. Americans are tired of politics as usual. Enough is enough!
Just listen to the difference in tone between Obama's rallies and McCain-Palin's. At the former, there is talk of hope, optimism and a determination to level the playing field for all Americans, not just the wealthy. It's ok to be rich, we're all captilists at heart. But what's not acceptable is putting the interests and needs of the wealthy above those of everybody else. What's not right is a party (the Republicans) who continue to sew the seeds of racism, class hatred and vitriol while claims they are the only "Pro-Americans".

Just today, I was in a zoo in Springfield, MA and overheard a man calling Obama a "damn n____r" and stating that if he won, "those people" would swarm over us all." What trash! But how typical of those supporting McCain-Palin. Since those two call Obama a "socialist", I suppose it would not be untoward of me to describe them as "fascist", possibly even closet Nazis. Don't give me that look...I'm deadly serious!

So, all in all, I pray for an Obama victory, but I fear the alternative. And if that happens, be prepared for the loss of more freedoms, for the continued and accelerated shredding of basic constitutional freedoms and protections, and for true class warfare, imposed on us by the rich and wealthy.

Sounds depressing, don't it? Well, from where I stand, this tragic consequence could very well arise from re-electing Republicans to the highest office.

A True Massachusetts Patriot
That is what I call "Big MO"  (drumroll.)

America is coming together!
WOW. GO Obama/Biden

I was wondering today exactly who has to pay the capital gains tax that we keep hearing about.  I googled it in order to get more information.  On a site called 'Politifact' I got my answer.  11% of people that make under 200,000.00 will pay a capital gains tax.  6% of people that make under 100,000.00 will pay it.
I really think our economy is imploding because our politicians have been giving the wealthiest Americans a free ride, and making the rest of us pay for it.  Suddenly, they are finding out that our pockets are empty.  They have taken it all.  Is there any limit to the greed?
If you really think that tax cuts for the wealthy will solve all our problems, you are part of the problem.  Hard working Americans pay payroll taxes.  Those are the taxes that Obama will cut.  THAT IS NOT SOCIALISM!!
Well - Over 100,000 folks that McCain Palin would deem "not real Americans".  I'm ticked off today because Nancy Pfotenhauer has termed my family home of Loudoun County VA "not real VA" and Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann seems to think our Senate and Congress need a McCarthy style house cleaning to root out terrorist sympathizers.

My ancestors have been in this country, since before Columbus. others settled with the early Dutch, and others fought in the American Revolution and every war since then.  Who are these people to question my patriotism or love for my country, because I'm voting for Senator Barack Obama?

Wow...

Huffington Post has the most amazing picture of the crowd.  You can see the state house in the background with a flag hung to the side, tens of thousands of people and Senator Obama at the podium addressing them.  It is THE picture of all pictures!  Just incredible!  Wow,wow,Wow!  I want that picture!  History making in every respect!  Awesome!
