Director Oliver Stone spoke to reporters this morning about his movie W., a biopic on President Bush's rise to the presidency and his role in the lead-up to the Iraq War.

Stone, director of JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Nixon and Platoon, has been the subject of fierce criticism for occasionally taking artistic license in his previous efforts.  With that track record, releasing an often-unflattering film about a sitting president at the height of the political season has put Stone squarely under the political hot lamp.

Slideshow: Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars have played presidents: some real, some fictional.

Citing his reasons for creating the movie, which started production in 2002, Stone called Bush one of the greatest stories of last 40 years. "Bigger than Reagan, bigger than Nixon and his impact on this country," Stone said. "You'd have to go back a long way to find a president with this impact."

Calling the narrative of Bush's life "stranger than fiction," Stone said that his administration overshadows the 2008 presidential elections. "I think it is a bigger issue than this election. I really, in my heart, think that this guy's policies are going to be around for a long time. And my grandchildren are going to be talking about this guy Bush like the way they talk about Teddy Roosevelt, the way they talk about Lincoln, the way they talk about Washington. I think he's had monumental impact on the future of this country."

Stone, who is an Obama supporter, stood by the script's use of quotes often taken out of context throughout the film.  "As a dramatist, we have to simplify and condense," he said. "And I don't think we crossed the line, the spirit of what happened in that administration. The Bush administration speaks for itself."

"I'm not writing a biography," Stone continued. "I'm not a journalist, never claimed to be. Nor am I a documentarian."

Furthering his own defense, Stone referenced a film review by Wayne Slater, a Texas journalist who has followed "W's" political rise since its infancy. Slater notes that one of the most painful, buffoonish scenes in the film was actually taken verbatim from a transcript of an actual Bush press conference.

Stone also stood by his choice to release the film before the end of Bush's presidency. "Gratuitous, absolutely not," said Stone. "This is a very serious matter, because unless you learn from the past, you are going to repeat it, whether it's this year or in ten years."

"If they would like to screen the film with me, or one of them would, I would most glad and gracious to do it," he added, offering to travel to visit the subject of his cinematic portrait. "But it's very hard, I know, to see a movie about yourself."

Especially if you're an idiot like George W. Bush. Ask Sarah Palin and her uncomfortable appearance on Saturday Night Live knowing the entire country is laughing AT you.   Obama/Biden '08/'12
said Stone. "This is a very serious matter, because unless you learn from the past, you are going to repeat it, whether it's this year or in ten years."

Boy is that the understatement of the decade?

and my thoughts from earlier,...

Which OTHER prominent Republicans are going to come forward and endorse Obama?  I’ve got a money bet on Christine Todd Whitman (“It’s My Party, too!).  Someone tried to equate Lieberman for McCain as similar in weight and importance; but if most will recall – Lieberman is now an “Independent”.  Colin Powell indicated he would not change his party affiliation.  For the True Republicans (not the neo con, class warfare, rabid dawgs) they ARE putting Country First.

The only numbers that matter now are the electoral college.  We have to get Obama over 50% in every single state we can.  I am still very concerned about the ‘undecideds’.  If Obama isn’t over the hump; the privacy of the booth may be a deal breaker.

I was part of the 75,000 in Kansas City and the man is simply brilliant.  I continue to maintain that if he runs our country HALF as effectively as he’s run this campaign – WE ALL HAVE SO MUCH TO GAIN.

These charges of ‘socialism’ are so intensely bizarre and proves that McCain is a man without a message.  He is so busy – even this late in the game – trying to pin any negative connotation to Obama.  It is completely phony and I really believe the majority of ‘thinking’ Americans see right through it.  Unfortunately, the non-thinkers are either not paying attention or they don’t want to be informed about the issues.  Regardless, McCain (like Bush) will never legitimately be my president.  I think the 'hail Mary' he is banking on is Diebold.

PS.  ACORN issue is such a crock.  I legally have the right to complete a voter registration form at Home Depot, Costco, Target and any other table top location to MAKE SURE my registration gets filed.  There is nothing illegal about that.  It could/would only be voter fraud if I took ID and voted more than once.  The likelihood of that actually happening is so completely rare.  I read recently in an entire state (New Mexico?) they figured that may have happened less than a dozen times in the states HISTORY.

If you don't have a message, distract with criminal allegations or other 'shiny objects' - like, say Palin?
He sure has had am impact on this country's future and not in a postive way.  Hopefully Obama/Biden will start the road back to recovery.  Vote smart.
I have seen the movie and I thought that the things brought forth were believable.  That is how things went.  Someone stated you leave having a little..a little sympathy for Bush.
A monumental impact indeed...just always for the worse, and not for the better. And his impact will go on and on, if America is stupid enough to elect his clone, McCain.
Hoprfully Stone is wrong. Bush has done alot to destroy our country, its financial solvency, its culture of compassion, of decency and its standing in the world. Sometimes I think a sworn enemy of the USA could not have been more effective at hurting the USA than Bush has been. However, in order to survive--we will have to reverse his policies and  the reversal has already started. In fact, the culture of greed has been so damaging that we have had to go more dramtically in the "other" direction to pull ourselves back from the brink---hence the public takeover of large amounts of private banking stock. I heard a financial reporter marvel at how "funny" this was in a Republican administration. If Bush was useful at all it was to take problems we have and MAGNIFY them so much we have to go cold turkey to get away from them....Just like an addict that he has been too. Bush has made America hit rock bottom...now it's time to start climbing back.
Having the most negative impact on our country is nothing to brag about, that is why W. is the Worst president in our history.  He has been Wrong on every issue and he has Wrecked our military and economy.  I won't bother to watch the movie because the subject matter is for ignorant fools who have more money than brains.

Lush Limburger has outdone himself today calling Colin Powell's decision racist.  He's the one who is racist and won't vote for Obama because of his race.  He pals around with David Duke and the KKK!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Oliver Stone made a mistake when he mentioned past Presidents that people talk about admirably. When talking about George W Bush they will be comparing him to the worst ever. The only debate will be who was the worst.
<<"This is a very serious matter, because unless you learn from the past, you are going to repeat it, whether it's this year or in ten years.">>

Sorry, but if you're one of the few people in this country who still supports Bush, you're not going to learn jack.

If you still support the man, you're a lost cause...plain and simple.
Maybe McCain needs to see the film. He is the one most inclined to repeat Bush's mistakes.
As a very staunch conservative I have not been his biggest fan when it comes to W's non-defense spending. Yet, I also feel the need to defend him.

Bush was the 1st President to have to deal with terrorism on our soil. And this occured just 8 months into his first term. And as Mr. Powell reminded us yesterday, in 2002 Congress supported going to war with Saddam. Our intellignce told us he had WMD. (Where is the WMD? I say it's in Syria.) Clinton even supported "regime change".

And sure, in hindsight we can look back. But let's look at the debates today if Saddam was still in power. If Saddam was still in power the discussion would be "is Saddam and Al-Queda working together?" "Saddam has WMD, is he giving them to Al-Queda?"

The key point here. Al-Queda DOES NOT WANT a democratic Iraq. The terrorists are doing all they can to make sure Iraq is a failure for the US. Look at a map of the Middle East, and you see the vision for the Middle East with a democratic Iraq.

Yes, I believe history wil vindicate Bush on Iraq.

My father taught me that the true measure of a President can not be viewed in the few years after he's left office, but rather several years/generations following.
I don't need Stone to tell me what a dunce Bush is or that he and Cheney should both be jailed for their unjust war of choice and violations of the constitution.  Stone did a great job, though.
Bush created his own history and legacy for either better or worse. That America will have to decide. This movie is a moving picture of the life of George Bush. Just don't call him Jr! I did not want to say movie, because that might confuse McCain. Maybe McCain can take Palin out to see the movie. They can call it a date or a fact finding mission. The movie will have to be played very slowly, because comprehension is a real issue for Sara. Now McCain you better be a gentleman, and buy the popcorn for Sarah. Now during the movie. If Sara starts calling out George to you John. Then you might want to leave or ask for your money back. Now this would be funny!
To Paul Miller, in Woodbridge, VA.  I look forward to your posts everyday they are very insightful and well thought out, it doesn't hurt that I agree with almost everything you say.  I hesitate to post here as the bar is so high based on your posts.  Keep it up!
Putting W. Bush in the same list as Ted. Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Washington, is insulting to, well, Ted. Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Washington.  And to say Bush's impact will be felt for years, you mean, his utterly failed policies and warmongering and trillion dollar defecits, will be with us or impact us for many years....plain and simple, no one, absent fictional revisionary story telling in the future, will ever say Bush was as great as Roosevelt, Lincol, or Washington.  I for one, will not be watching this movie, because the real Bush is sickening enough to watch on TV.
Maybe Stone can make a movie in 4 years on Obama and how he screwed the taxpayers. Who do you think is going to pay for all the programs Obama wants to institute??  Obama has you convinced it's the guy down the street who will pay and not you...you will get a tax credit...
This country is based on medium and small business. Mostly privately owned. Who do you work for? Think about whether that company can afford Obama's taxes and mandatory health insurance for children...again I ask who pays??? Ultimately you do.

We are from WI and today my Husband received a flyer in the mail from the RNC it had the eyes of Sen. Obama and it said this "America must look evil in the eye and never flinch". What the hell is this!!! Sen. McCain this is the most shameful, racist, beyond the pale I have ever seen. Shame on you and the RNC have all of you people lost what ever sense of what makes America great! This should not be allowed! You are setting yourself up for the public to go against the RNC. I cannot blame anyone for that.
W. A movie about GWB. I have a question why I have lived that nightmare. I go to the movies to feel better not worse! When ever GWB is on TV I turn it off it makes me sick to see him, hear his voice are to even think about him. As a matter of fact I feel ill right now. I can't wait till Jan 20th and that will be the last time we have to see or hear for him!
This is a great movie that shows how evil a group of power hungry maniacs impacted American policy regarding Iraq and the Middle East.  I felt sick and depressed watching this movie seeing firsthand how Bush’s staff planned and executed the Iraq war.  Their cavalier attitude about the death and destruction they were causing to our American troops and the Iraq peoples is beyond belief.  This showed the true character of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz and the rest of the warmongers.  We are suffering today we will continue to suffer future from the impacts of this outrageous war.  No doubt, Bush will go down in history as the worst President in American history.  Nice job Oliver!!
The Masterpiece Theatre Elizabeth R Series made Queen Elizabeth and her time come alive for me; Foyle’s War has significantly expanded my knowledge of wartime England. Ken Burn’s Civil War is for me the penultimate historical work. Against that background, it is interesting to contemplate a film such a W, one that takes great liberties with when Bush said what, but which may catch the essential of the man. I will see it at some point, and it will be interesting to put it through the sieve of my understanding of our times and the President, who will go down in history as quite possibly the worse President we have ever had.
Saw this movie on Friday....it's devastating in it's depiction of a spoiled, self centered, self serving, rich kid who wanted to "show" his father he was a better man.  Too bad the United States got to be in the middle of this family feud.  Who says we don't have dynasties in this country?
Bush is even more stupid than this movie portrays him...Oliver Stone must have been working for the republicans on this one
Obama's lead has increased to 10 points in Virginia in today's Rasmussen poll!

Barack Obama has opened his biggest lead yet over John McCain in Virginia. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds Obama now leading 54% to 44%. The Democrat leads 51% to 48% among men and 57% to 42% among women
Now here is another movie idea. Even after watching the movie "W" with John McCain at first. Palin after the movie asked reporters" Why was it called "W"?" As the movie was still playing. People said they saw McCain storm out of the movie yelling."I am not George Bush!!" As he fell to his knees with his hands stretched out to the night city skyline. People walked by John were heard replying."We still don't believe you George!" What a joke!
I saw the film yesterday (Sunday) it was so unsettling to actually SEE what I only "believed" to be true.  Great ending... never being able to get the LAST OUT!!  I can hardly wait for Jan 20..
I've enjoyed some of Oliver Stone's movies like Scarface, Wall Street, and Platoon.  When it comes to politics he seems a little unbalanced.  In JFK he presented tinfoil hat conspiracy theory as though it were a history lesson.  In Castro he made a dictator seem like a nice guy, and a benefit to Cuba.  Going by who he seems to admire in politics, were I political figure, I'd find his dislike of me more flattering than his approval.
The greatest gift that Bush gave us is someone to point to the next time someone tries to BS everyone.  We can point to Bush and say "we don't want another disaster like THAT again!"
Aside from that one gift, he is one God-awful blight on our history.  He had every opportunity to be a good president, but spurned those opportunities in the interest of petty partisanship at a time in which our country needed good leadership more than ever.  He shouldn't have quit drinking--being an alcoholic is the only thing he's succeeded at in his entire life!
George W. Bush is a semi-literate, barely functioning semian and has no socially redeeming qualities. Well, maybe a good father to his daughters.

Otherwise, he has ruined our good name around the world and was out to lunch as the economy crumbled. Did I read that he had not had a meeting with his Economic team since March when thinhs started to go south early in the summer? What a disgrace.

Maybe Oliver Stone can cut "W" some slack but I will never have high regard for that man.
I saw the movie yesterday, there was alot of laughing, mostly about things that actually happened and things GW actually said.  So sad that at one point he sounded as confussed and Sarah Palin.
Was Oliver misquoted? "'And my grandchildren are going to be talking about this guy Bush like the way they talk about Teddy Roosevelt, the way they talk about Lincoln, the way they talk about Washington. I think he's had monumental impact on the future of this country.'" Like Teddy, Abe, or GW himself??? If my grandchildren remember and speak of W, it will only be because he was the first President who managed to bankrupt our nation and lose a war!!!
W's impact will be the complete opposite of everything that Presidents (T.)Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Washington have come to stand for.

Saw "W" Friday night.

Oliver's best.

America at its worst. (so far)
