Tar Heel early vote going Carolina blue?

Posted: Monday, October 20, 2008 2:06 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC's Carrie Dann

Here's your early-vote snapshot of the day, courtesy of the meticulously up-to-date records of the North Carolina elections board.

As of this morning, over 340,000 North Carolinians have cast general election ballots, with the vast majority taking advantage of the state's early in-person absentee voting, dubbed "One Stop" by Tar Heels.

Over six million state residents are registered to vote in North Carolina, one of the nation's newest political battlegrounds.

Of 270,000 in-person voters since "One Stop" opened last Thursday, over 60% were registered Democrats, compared to only 20% Republicans. (The remainder: mostly unaffiliated voters, who make up about 20% of the state's electorate.)

Of the 66,000 civilians who have mailed in absentee ballots, Republicans have outnumbered Democrats by a margin of about 2-1.

Still, registered Democrats make up 55% of those who have already cast votes for the North Carolina general election, while registered Republicans account for less than one in three ballots already cast.

*** UPDATE *** As of 4:30pm today, the number of in-person early voters jumped to 358,000, per an update from state elections director Gary Bartlett.  That means that close to ninety thousand North Carolinians cast ballots today.

Polls schmolls...Obama/Biden win in a LANDSLIDE!
Interesting numbers.  Any take on why the absentee ballots are overwhelmingly GOP while the One Stop0 voters are not?  Is it just the method of GOTV emphasized by each party?  Interesting disparity.
Don't it make my red eyes blue?  I know a friend from N.C. who is voting absentee---and he is voting for Obama. Can you imagine North Carolina---Jesse Helmscountry---voting in an African American to the White House even a generation ago?  Makes me proud to be an American!
go voting go voting go voting go obama go obama go obama go obama go biden go biden go biden..... yeahhhhhhhh

obama/biden
It will be interesting to see if those Republicans that aren't doing early voting, make up for it on Election Day.
The tar-heel state is typical of what is happening nation-wide.  They may have better voting data than most early voting states, but the results will be similar.  This will be a very high turn-out election with young people voting in droves. Many seniors will vote early so they won't have to stand in long lines.

The biggest differences in this election is 1) the youth vote and the newly registered vote.  Both factors favor Obama
as he said before "He will change the map!
Good for NC!!  I wish all states were this organized.

Vote early and make your vote count!!
I don't care what the polls say and I don't know what would be considered a landslide. But the information we keep getting like this coming from NC as well as early voting information from Nevada and other States indicate a big Obama win.

Be ready for the ground game on Nov 4 folks and let's get out the vote! Send McCain back to the Senate and Palin, well, just send her somewhere far- far away.
This is a great start for all of our fellow Americans in North Carolina. Now we need all of our fellow citizens to vote Obama on November 4. Let's show future generations of Americans. That we are a country of moral equalily, personal dignity, social caring, and economic progess for all. Now this is not a joke!
I'm proud to say that I am one of those registered Democrats who voted in North Carolina via One Stop. I'm a college student at Wake Forest University, and I had no problems voting. Hopefully this big boost in early voter turnout amongst the Dems can get Obama, Hagan, AND Perdue in office. I think the Emily's List ad here helps too. Go Deacs, and Go Dems!
good to hear that so many people are voting. I hope it gets attention that the McCain supporters slashed the tires of Obama supporters and are heckling them at North Carolina per a report from the huff post. Intimidating voters is wrong, but I am glad to see that the democrats are not paying attention to the McCain supporters and are voting.
An illustration of the enthusiam gap between dems and repubs.  if you vote repub you should be shipped to alaska and after the repub round up and deportation, we should grant alaska its independence.
I went today at noon in uptown Charlotte and it was a 30 minute wait to early vote. I waited 1.5 hours to vote during the primary so I believe many NC voters will be voting early if they can.
I hope we can turn this State blue for a change and not give our politicians a free ride for poor judgment in the past... Now if every state would do its part we can put integrity and responsibility back in our government!
Does anyone have the link to the info referred to here?  I can't seem to find it on the NC BoE site...

from a Tarheel
I was just reading a article on the recent episode of "Family Guy". It discussed the McCain/Palin button on a Nazi uniform during the last show. Besides it being very offensive, I have another question.
How much does Family Guy charge for product placement??
If Stewy drinks a soda and it is an obvious Pepsi product then PepsiCo is paying a fee for product placement.
Where is the charge for Obama's product placement??
The tv station and show creaters are in business, they are using that business to promote Obama.
Where is the product placement fee??? Is it free??
This should count as a donation to his campaign!!!
Obama is benifiting from Millions of undocumented dollars worth of free advertising. And most is negative attack type of media.
If your working for the politicians, declare it, and show how much your buying your favors for.

North Carolina can turn this state blue if the new voter, young voter and college voters and older registered Democrats will all get out and vote for a change in America. Its time for North Carolinians to vote for their own economic interests and not against them..Republican tax policy has effectively shifted wealth from the bottom 80 percent of the population to the top one percent and racked up enormous national debt in the process. Vote for real CHANGE North Carolina vote Obama/Biden and send a message to the Republicans they don't own North Carolina..
It will be interesting to see if those Republicans that aren't doing early voting, make up for it on Election Day.
I think the surprise will definetly be in the southern states.  While we talk about the white working class, there are a number of first time black americans in the south coming out to support Barack.
What about independents?
This article read like complete crap... so is it going democratic or republican?  This is completely round about.
NC will go blue this time around.
I just cast my vote in Houston TX. I hope Obama can carry Texas, but at worst there will be quite a few unemployed republicans in public office
The nation could learn alot from the great state of North Carolina. We have a well run elections process with no legal issues or problems with fraud or suppression which you get in Florida and Ohio. Early voting is very popular here, with projection sof 1 million people voting before November 4.
How do they know this? I didn't think the ballots were opend until the day of the election.
looking good for obama!!! change we need. this is the beginning of the end for mccain and a the real beginning for america!
The absentee ballot numbers look like what we might typically expect, but the one-stop results are something else.

Certainly this is no predictor of final turnout in NC, but it is an indicator both of the enthusiasm among Dems, and of the Obama field operation, which is pushing early voting hard, in order to lock in votes, and reduce the number of supporters they have to track on election day.  I believe that the "ground game" will be a larger impact this year for Obama than it was for Bush in '04, the previous gold standard in base mobilization.
While this is good for Obama.  It is by no means over.  Everyone!!! needs to show up and vote for Senator Obama!!!  Don't get tricked thinking it is over..You need to pass this on!!
My 75 year mother stood in line for an hour in Raleigh on Saturday to vote. She went on Friday but the wait was 2 hours so she came back to get in line before the poll opened the next day. You go Mom!! Yes we can!
It is great that people in so many states can vote early and not have to worry about lines on election day.  I would hope that every state could do that.  It might encourage more people to vote if there is a window of oppertunity.

If these numbers are correct, there could be a change in the "color" of the states.  I am just glad that there are no numbers being reported.  I hope that the only returns that I hear about are done after the polls are closed.
I understand the tendency to use early voting as some sort of predictor...The problem is that early voting would indicate an excitement in voting FOR a particular candidate..Across most polls, in most states, Obama has dwarfed McCain in "enthusiasm" as measured by "strong support" for their candidate..That may not mean that McCain's "mild supporters" will not overtake Obama's enthusiastic supporters. The fact is the 340,000 is a small fraction of the total vote required..The media's definitely in a hurry to write the end to this campaign...Also, many voters would probably prefer to get the whole thing out of the way, at this point...The reality is that nothing will be decided until Nov 4th...Ask the Kerry campaign about the value of an early voter lead in NC. They lead early. They lost.
Watch out...all of a sudden, those absentee ballots will be missing!  I don't trust elections anymore because republicans are always cheating in them, rigging them, or doing something to cause voting irregularities in their favor.
Doesnt pointing out the registration demographics have the possibility of changing the outcome of the election?

Republicans see that the Democrats are really going to get out and vote so they make sure to get out and vote themselves.
Lets hope these early votes don't suspiciously come up "missing".
How do you know the state is turning blue, have they counted the ballots??????????????????
All of these early voting, register and vote at the same time, and other variations are destroying the American political system. It should be very simple. Election "day" should run two, maybe three, days so everyone gets a chance to vote. With the exception of elderly and disabled, there should be no voter registration drives or "get out the vote" campaigns. Everyone should have to show up at their local polling place and register in person and go vote on their own. That would get all of the partisan pressure out of the system. If someone doesn't register in the four years between elections then they obviously don't care that much and should not be cancelling out someone else's vote. Unfortunately, the Dems would never go for it because that would eliminate most of the uninformed and uninspired voters and then they wouldn't have a chance.
Early voting started in Florida this morning. I waited 1hr to vote (it was very well organized and went well) When I left there was a line with still a one hour wait.  This was in a small area of Jupiter Florida. Great experience to see so many taking advantage of the early voting. Go Obama...
At several early voting locations in North Carolina, McCain supporters were calling early voters "cheaters".

I guess McCain and Palin think 336,000 (227,000 in person + 66,000 mail-in) American citizens are cheaters because they voted.
Stop drinking the red Kool-Aid---I am from NC and no way does our state go for Nobama!  McCain in a landslide!  The early voting is someone running a sprint during a marathon.  Nobama may lead during the early vote, but people who vote with their brains instead of emotion will choose McCain!
Please, oh please, can't it be DUKE BLUE!!

Go Obama/Biden.......Go Duke!!
I am getting tired of the GOP punditry forecasting that the "Bradley Effect" will kick in on Election Day. They insinuate that there are many white Americans who have no intention of voting for Obama, but are saying that they will in an attempt to appear non-racist. I have one question for them. Is that $150 million we donated last month part of the "Bradley Effect" as well??I don't believe that most of us can afford to give away our hard- earned money to support a candidate we won't vote for!!!! Bradley Effect? NOT!!!
I have read where people are being heckled in North Carolina while voting early and tires are being slashed.  I encourage all Americans to stand up to this activity and exercise your civic duty.  It is truly sad to see such reminders of hate.  Those that have had to endure long lines, hecklers and flat tires are truly those who are putting country first.
Go North Carolina, we can do this! I also plan on voting early for Obama.  The good old southern boy’s network needs a good shake up in my opinion.T his state has been red for way to long.
Great news but don't let up for a SECOND.  This is the moment we have been waiting for.  Everyone, EVERYWHERE, needs to give 110% for the next two weeks.  Don't let UP, leave everything on the Road.

Obama '08!
Voted the first day in NC, tons of young people voting. I felt great as I am an old white guy, and I loved seeing the young involved and all of us have one thing in common OBAMA
I voted within the 1st hour possible for me to do so here in Texas. While I don't hold out much hope for Texas to go Blue, I felt it important to do my part and VOTE ! Hopefully everyone else will do the same. And hopefully Norriega can take out Cornyn here to fill one of the seats we're gonna lose from Barack and Joe.

Obama/Biden 08 & 12
Go Carolina, Go! The Tar Heel state will go blue, Florida will go Blue, the entire east coast will go blue, and so will most of the bread basket states, the west, the south, and the northeast. Blue's my favorite color....except when I'm rooting for Gator Orange and Green!
It is SO GOOD to see all of these Obama supporters weighing in here. . . I have little hope that AZ will go blue, but my vote for Obama Biden is in; as well as my vote for the more liberal of the other choices!
It is time to TAKE BACK AMERICA!
For years the republicians got their voters to vote absentee, which helped them win elections.  Maybe the tide is turning for the Dems.
Just remember to Vote early, and to Vote often, per ACORN.
