Obama overplays Palin's robocall distaste

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones

TAMPA, Fla. -- At a rally to drum up excitement over early voting, Obama said even his rival’s running mate is denouncing the McCain campaign’s tactics.

“In the final days of campaigns, the say-anything, do-anything politics too often takes over. We’ve seen it before and we’re seeing it again today,” he said. “Ugly phone calls, misleading mail, misleading TV ads, careless, outrageous comments.  All aimed at keeping us from working together. All aimed at stopping change. It’s getting so bad that even Sen. McCain’s running mate denounced his tactics last night. You know you really have to work hard to violate Gov. Palin’s standards on negative campaigning.”

The Democratic nominee was referring to comments Sarah Palin made to journalists yesterday when asked about robocalls that voters in several states have reported receiving. In Tampa today, the line was met with roars of applause, but upon closer examination does not appear to be totally accurate.

The campaign confirmed he was talking about Palin’s statement on robocalls, but while the Alaska governor told reporters she thought robocalls were irritating to voters, she pointedly refused to denounce them.

Here are the key exchanges from Palin’s brief press conference:

Q: What would you do if you got to call all the shots?

PALIN: "If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand, I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls and includes spending so much money on the television ads that I think is kinda draining out there in terms of Americans' attention span, they get a bit irritated with just being inundated, and you're seeing a lot of that of course with the huge amounts of money that Barack Obama is able to spend on his ads and his robocalls also."

Q: Several senators, Republican senators have said the McCain campaign should end the robocalls. Do you think the same thing?

PALIN: "I'm not calling for an end to the robocalls, no, uh-uh."

Early voting
Obama, a White Sox fan, was introduced by a group of Tampa Bay Rays, who encouraged people to get out and vote early. He congratulated the team for winning the American League pennant, even joking that he had considered sporting a Mohawk in solidarity. He then made his own pitch to get out the early vote.

“You can start voting today so I want everybody after this rally if you have not already voted, I want you to go vote,” he said. “Don’t wait until Nov 4th. You don’t know what might happen on Nov. 4th. Your car might break down; you might have an emergency; the alarm might not go off, you don’t get to work on time and so take the advantage of early vote."

The mention of emergencies or problems that could delay or prevent a trip to the polls on Election Day echoed ones used by Obama's former rival Hillary Clinton during the primaries as she sought to encourage early voting in the states that allowed it. He was set to join the New York senator at a rally in Orlando tonight, their first joint appearance on the trail since the convention.

The event in Hillsborough County, which George Bush won in the last two elections, marked Obama’s sixth trip to the Sunshine State during the general election.

You people are ridiculous with your headlines. Palin clearly criticized the robo-calls.
No big deal . . . this is not a real gaffe!  and it is of no significance.  Palin's comments are fair game; they constantly snip-up Obama's statements to use in ads against him . . . and they've been egregious!  So if he omits the following phrases so be it!  That is the game of politics!
Too much credit to Caribou Barbie. But good line though.
I don't think so. didn't she not say that if she had a magic wond she would not use robocalls and other conventional types of camapaign tactics. she prefers to speak to people in their homes.
I'm sorry, how exactly did Sen. Obama "overplay" Gov. Palins remarks? She did denounce the robocalls, and stated it's not something she would have done.

Sen. Obama stated the FACTS.
Palin is a complete failure.  First I don't like and I would change things to oh no keep them once she realized she did not get permission to say what she said.
I am going tommorrow to vote early in S.C. I will be voting a straight democratic ticket, now in S.C. that
doesnt mean much but I will know that there are other state in our great country that will cover our ignorant asses here in S.C.

Obama/Biden
marty
What if a child gets your robocalls, McCain?

You've thrown all of your HONOR away!

VOTE OBAMA!
Palin likes robocalls, because she's a Fem-bot! Does not compute, does not compute, does not comp...[exploding head]
Palin states the robocalls are irritating to people but then states she is not calling for an end to them?

In other words Palin supports the robocalls and other forms of negative campaigning even knowing they irritate voters.

Conclusion - Palin likes to irritate voters.

Palin sees the handwriting on the wall and as the election gets closer watch how she will try and distance herself by way of innuendo from McCain so she can run on her own in four years. Here we thought Mccain might drop Palin but it seems that Palin will  try and drop McCain. The far right neo-cons who truly do not support Mccain are recruiting her to run in the future without McCain. The problem is they don't seem to understand that Palin has no political future. That is unless she decides to run for VP of the local Wasilla Moose Lodge.

Overplayed? You mean like the way the McCain camp overplays Obama being a socialist/communist? a terrorist sympathizer? That's "overplaying"...
Sarah Palin's comments that the robocalls and other despicable means of campaigning are irritating is an understatement at best.  It is shameful as a politician and mother that she condones such vile tactics.  What are we teaching our children!
No matter how you slice it, calls that involuntarily come in to  voters' home that are designed to instill fear and can be heard by young people as well as elderly are based on poor judgment and not meant to inform.  Factual information that does not call for a stretch of the imagination is appropriate, but linking fine upstanding citizens running for presidents with terrorist based on logical interactions is seedy, slimy and downright incites  violence!  Senator McCain's relationship with G. Gordon Liddy would have to be explored as one could argue, based on Senator McCain's  experience, he should have know better-repentant criminal or not-now is that fair.  Oh, and what about this molestation and party switch accusation?  This is no longer just extreme conservative/Republican talking points, it's bad actions, some of which, amount to criminal behavior and should be stopped.
This is more of the "same old politics" out of Obama.  He'd be much more convincing if he didn't engage in this kind of misleading campaigning.

That said, I'm still voting for him, and have been a supporter of his since the primary season.  But my enthusiasm has certainly waned as this campaign has gone on, and some of his campaigning has left me a little irritated that he's so hypocritical.
Because I'm an Independent, I was getting a lot of annoying voice messages trying to get me to vote for McCain until I changed my voicemail greeting: "If you're calling to get me to vote for John McCain, don't bother to leave a message." I no longer get McCain messages, and the Obama folks get a kick out of my greeting. Probably wouldn't help with the robocalls, but otherwise it's working.
It is all to distract and it does not seem to be working either. What else does Mclame and Plain have to offer?
Palin is useless, she puts her foot in her mouth and then back tracks.. just like GWB.. lovely. Just what we need another one of those in the WH. OBAMA-BIDEN! Vote and Vote early.
McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told radio host Hugh Hewitt late last week that they are reconsidering using the Rev. Jeremiah Wright as an issue in the last two weeks of the presidential race.

GO AHEAD, LOSERS. America is sick of your "end justifies the means" lying and you'll just go down in the polls even more. We're done with the lies, done with the rich get richer Reaganomics and done with a campaign of lobbyists and criminals.

This is just more PROOF that John McCain is morally and ethically bankrupt.

What a pathetic used-up old relic of the past he is... kind of like Pat Buchanan.
Is there anything this column won't do to "sell papers?"  Is this headline material, or are you just being obsequious to the McCain campaign?
Hey have you guys remembered everytime McCain/Palin overplayed comments by Obama or Biden.  Please, give us a run down of each candidate and see whose score adds up to the highest number of distortions of the other's position or words.  It will be the only landslide McCain/Palin can hope for this year.  They are such "Washed up old Republicans."
Obama is doing robocalls too.  the only difference, is that McCain's robocalls just state the truth.
Does anybody actually listen to robo calls?
Bless you, Marty Holloman! Check in with us again after you vote! We are anxious but do not have early voting in our state.
Palin:

"If I called all the shots, and if I could wave a magic wand, I would be sitting at a kitchen table with more and more Americans, talking to them about our plan to get the economy back on track and winning the war and not having to rely on the old conventional ways of campaigning that includes those robocalls".

"I'm not calling for an end to the robocalls, no, uh-uh."

And these are the comments of someone who is consistent and not erratic?

And just what would Palin tell voters at the kitchen table? That she can see Russia and the status of our economy from her back door. What fine, specific plans would she be offering and dicusssing a tthe kitchen table?

No wonder Palin has to rely on robocalls rather than discussing specifics at the kitchen tables of Amercians. She has nothing to offer. Am I missing something here First Read?
She said she wanted to have more contact with the average American and commented on a truth, no one likes telemarketing calls.  Obama was negative in his response and should get called on the carpet for his polarizing comments.  Wait, I keep forgetting, Obama doesn't get called on his negative comments - just the old guy.  I can't wait to see how Obama is going to "change" or fix our problems with no new taxes on the middle class and a huge deficit.  If there wasn't so much at stake, watching this debacle might be fun.
Palin did clearly state that robocalls were annoying and that they would not be her ideal method of communicating with voters. I know that FirstRead and MSNBC have a lot invested in stirring the pot, but y'all are getting sad in your overreaching.
Don't give her more credit than due... she's not that smart, frankly. She just doesn't actually take stock of what she says... words just roll out of her brainless little pea-brain without actual meaning.

She is really just another high school mean girl who never developed an adult's approach to relationships... it's why she's nothing but snark and snide remarks and nice clothes.

Shoes are more important to her than truth or educated conversation.
What? He overplayed? Clearly, Palin disapproved of robocalls.  In fact, she herself said that she rather be sitting in a kitchen table talking to people and that she was "irritated" by robocalls.  Please stop using McCain campaign talking points.  I know you want the election to be close, but your shameful and innaccurate reporting does no good.
Today, Palin started having her own robocalls in Wisconsin.
McCain and Palin are constantly misinterpreting and putting words in Obama's mouth!! For example, Obama said to 'Joe the Plumber' that we wanted to "spread the wealth", but that doesn't stop the GOP from declaring that Obama must want to "redistribute wealth" and the therefore a socialist.

The difference with Obama on Palin's comment is that his assertion was a fair representation of hers: if she were in charge she won't do it. Their representation of Obama's remark is a distortion.

You guys in MSM should know and explain the difference to the American people.
Come on BO! Pass out some of that CASH you got for the campaign. Share the wealth and help us out here who are hurting! You already won. Why waste it on McDaddy? PLEZZZZ?
Fem-Bot?  No Way! Palin is not smart enough to be a Fem-Bot.  She only qualifies for a McCain Puppet.
Palin does not know what she means anymore. My fellow Americans this is an individual who has proven ethics, and abuse of power violations against her. She has no problem distorting what she really thinks and believes at a drop of a hat. Her lie and deny tactics in her twisted messages are disturbing. If a person takes the short time needed to sort through Palins miscomments. They will quickly come to the same conclusion that Obama has. I have! Why is Palin still running around free when she should be in Alaska facing justice? What a joke!
Children HAVE been getting the robocalls and some of them have been very upset (understandably), being told that the man who might become president is allied to someone who blows up buildings and kills Americans (overlooking the fact that the only people killed by the Weathermen were their own people, in an accident!).  I would hate for my young child to be subjected to that. --- I saw a story earlier about several mothers and fathers who are at least trying to make strong complaints because of it.  Can't recall where -- maybe ABC?
It was clear she took a different view than the McCain campaign did.
I don't answer my phone. It might be a Robo-Crediter.
Meanwhile the GOP which just partially nationalized $700bn of our banking industry calls Obama the socialist ?  Give me a break.

If Obama is a socialist, what does that make Warren Buffet ?  The GOP is clearly the party of the braindead.

FR - where did you guys get this information regarding Sarah Palin's statement?

This is sad - I thought you guys were better than this - yes, Sarah Palin did in fact say she would "not" do the robo calls.

Come on guys! I know you want the race to be close for rating purposes - but this is ridiculous
I was undecided when the general election campaigns started.  Like most of you, I've searched as many sources as possible to get to know all four of the candidates.

I am originally from Ohio (love my state despite "Joe the fairy tale republican"), I now live in Florida and although early voting started today, I'm travelling on business this week, but I assure you I'll be voting next Monday Obama/Biden!!!!!

As much as the image of Sarah Palin's characteristic wink (with her hand on our nuclear arsonal) scares me, John McCain frightens me more (if that is possible)!

I can only recommend that those of you spouting hate, division, racism, and greed to open your eyes to the 1,000s of sources that point to the repugnant filth, and lies spread by the McCain campaign, and the RNC.
Seriously, is the media just trying to keep this election as close as possible because it will boost their ratings?

Getting ridiculous, guys...  Obama did NOT "overplay" Palin's statement.

If you want to talk about a campaign taking their opponents' words out of context, PLEASE take a look at the BS the McCain team is spewing this week!
Well - I ALSO live in SC - and will be VOTING SMART:
McCAIN/PALIN - and so will most of my neighbors, and MILLIONS of Americans.

I sure hope I do not get a robo call at my house and my son answers the phone.  The message should be about issues and not one that I am afraid to have my son answer.  Just when I thought Bush 44 could no sink lower, I am proven wrong.  With living in the gutter with your campaign Bush 44, will be have to join you there if you have a miracle come your way and win?
obama is an Arrogant, Radical FRAUD

obama = WELFARE
McCain = JOBS

VOTE SMART:McCain/Palin - we can TRUST them
OK. but I don't see how Obama "overplayed" Palin's comments????  Please tell me what you mean.
Really, what about the young kids who answer the phones? What does Palin, who drags her kids every where, and uses them as props; what does she have to say about the kids who answer the phones?
Obama has always taken things out of context, but his followers either don't care or are too lazy to get the real facts.
By the way, Obama is doing robocalls too!
Early voting is huge, especially because the campaigns get updates on who voted.  If you live in a battleground, it helps the campaigns target resources on election day at the few persuadables who are left (and leave you alone).  If you live in a locked state, it frees you to work as an election monitor (a little civic duty and a few bucks) or volunteer for the get out the vote drive of the candidate you support.

This is how big it is - over 190,000 people have already voted in Illinois in 1 week of early voting.  Most of those folks support Obama, and that gives him a pool of tens of thousands (if not more) of potential volunteers to send to states like Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Indiana for get out the vote.  Even more might take a few hours if they get the day off from work to phone bank.  I'd assume McCain would have the same goal, but he hasn't pushed early voting as hard.
VOTE SMART:  McCAIN/PALIN
A team we can TRUST
I just got back from early voting. Before I went in I was talking to a grp of young people and they were asking who they should vote for. I explained McCains plans then explained obamas friends, associates and his plan for America. They asked are you kidding I told them no I wasn't but they should choose for themselves. I said I prefer to live in a free democracy that promotes hard work, not tax you for it. I asked if they were in college and said I hope you aren't wanting to be suscessful in life ! If you are then Obama is going to charge you for that up 40% of your income ! but you kids need to vote for who you want ! Smiled and said have a good day !
it just shows that mccain can't control his campaign and how will he control to run this country if he wins?!? obama was right to remark what sinister palin had said. this report is a major gaffe!

OBAMA-BIDEN 08
Its hard to understand just what Sarah Palin really thinks.  The RNC and the McCain campaign have programmed her into a wind-up attack doll.  We don't know if she really has her own opinions because they have total control over her.  Its very troubling.
