Biden's warnings

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
Over the course of five fundraisers on the West Coast this weekend, Biden offered some pretty honest assessments of the state of the race, even by his standards.

He warned that the polls will tighten. He said that some undecided voters in battleground states are still having a difficult time with the idea of voting for an African American. And, he expressed concern that some of the earlier sentiments on display at McCain and Palin rallies were “dangerous,” particularly amongst those who aren’t “stable.”

Attracting the most attention this morning was his prediction on Sunday that within six months of his administration, Obama would be tested just as John F. Kennedy was.

“Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy," Biden said. "And he’s gonna have to make some really tough -- I don’t know what the decision’s gonna be, but I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you, it’s gonna happen.”

The McCain campaign has pounced on the statement as Biden perhaps implying that Obama could not handle a crisis alone. The Obama campaign disagrees, however, saying Biden just “referenced the simple fact that history shows Presidents face challenges from day one.”

And they emphasize the larger context of Biden’s statement, that the nation would be “in the right hands” with Obama. The help Biden was calling for was as support for Obama would have to make “sound,” though likely unpopular decisions.

"Be prepared to stick with us," he said. "Remember the faith you had at this point because you’re going to have to reinforce us."

It is noteworthy, though, how similar Biden’s comments were to a statement in June by McCain supporter Joe Lieberman, one that was strongly criticized by Obama supporters.

“Our enemies will test the new president early,” Lieberman said on “Face the Nation.” “Remember that the truck bombing of the World Trade Center happened in the first year of the Clinton administration. 9/11 happened in the first year of the Bush administration.”

Biden’s assessment would seem in line with Lieberman’s, but rather than evoking the potential for a crisis as evidence Obama was not ready, Biden raised the notion to argue precisely the opposite.

“They're going to want to test him, just like they did young John Kennedy,” he said Saturday night in San Francisco.” They're going to want to test him. And they're going to find out this guy's got steel in his spine.”

And if something does happen within 6 months of an Obama administration, then it will be all Bush's fault, since the planning took place during his administration, who was too inept to stop it.  In fact, we can blame Bush on all things that may go wrong during Obama's first and second terms, since the repukes blamed Clinton for everything that was wrong with Bush's presidency from day 1!
What does he mean? What kind of test or attack on the US. Why would someone do that. BO is not about all that. The world wants him to be our leader. That's nonsense and another Joe being Joe, right?
Will someone duck tape this man's mouth closed until November 5th... Jeez... Is this man trying to not get elected...

Vote Obama!
Time to move on. That is what president's are for. We are ready to support who ever we elect but I hope we elect the smartest and best mind out of the two.

Otherwise we will have anohter four years similar to the last 8.
"It is noteworthy, though, how similar Biden’s comments were to a statement in June by McCain supporter Joe Lieberman, one that was strongly criticized by Obama supporters."
--I'm not sure that the statement that the world will test the next President was in dispute by Obama supporters.  I believe it more likely the implication that Barack Obama could not handle such an event by Joe Lieberman was at issue.  Biden was supportive of Obama and did not indict McCain's ability with his statement.  This is an important distinction and the reporting could me clearer.
so in other words the republicans are desperate and are parsing the words of Biden to make a non existant point. Good job first read on printing the entire quote and disputing the republicans talking points.
I'm confused about the unpopular decisions Biden referenced. It's that what we are saying Bush has done over and over again. More of the same? Reinforce us. Maybe a mandatory draft for the Army? Help me out on this one if you can? And I want some of that campaign champane and CASH!
I hope this story gets traction because contrary to how you see it, I think the statement is going to cause many people who were on the fence to think twice about pulling the lever for this guy.  I know I don't feel comfortable with him doing anything in regards to domestic policy, let alone areas of national security and foreign policy. Maybe this will jolt people out of the coma they have fallen into. Maybe this statement is finally the kid telling everyone the emperor has no clothes.
Here's the next FR headline-----Chris Matthews Owns Tom Ridge on Hardball
i think obama will do fine, he's got a lot of powerful people backing him up. not just democrats but republicans too. they all see that mcpalin is out of touch of whats going on in the real world, we all see that mccain can't control his campaign staff and how will he can control by running this country if mccain wins...scary thought especially as sinister palin takes over if anything happens to mccain!!

obama-biden 08
It astounds me that the average working person
can even consider voting for Mccain. He has not and will never support middle class America. Look at his voting record!! Always for big business and the rich. Always voting against the rights of women and us. He even voted against a bill supporting our
veterans. What he says is not what or who he is.
Listen carefully, voters. His campaign will go down as the sleeziest, dirtiest in the history of our country. Do we want a man of this caliber leading our country?
Absolutely, not.
Obama is the future and McCain the past
McCain Campaign....MAKE AN AD WITH THESE COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep Lieberman, - Obama does have steel in his spine.  As evidenced by this 2-year campaign he's been on.  I feel very safe with my life in his hands, thank you very much.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08
Leave it to the McCain campaign to turn anything and everything to their lying advantage.
The sound and unpopular decision will be the same one President Bush made: to stay the course in Iraq. Biden and Obama are not fooling most of us.
Sen. Biden tells the truth and McCain's campaign ignores the complete statement and spins out another half-truth to their own benefit. It is this habit of blatant intellectual dishonesty that is costing McCain the presidency.
Think about this~is this really the best you can offer? Burnt out already before election day? Do you really think most Americans do not realize the potential of the Biden content?
let a republican mention an attack aND ITS FEAR mongering but a democrat scare people as much as you want.what a great double standard .Or both parties are the same ask obamma about the telecom bill legalized wiretaps priceless.
What is Biden running a psychic hotline now? All these predictions. Hey JB, would have been much more impressed if you predicted the drop in the stock market a month or so ago.
Biden is trying to warn the American people about this inexperienced empty suit before it's too late
Wake up America!!!!!

McCain/Palin 2008
I agree with Senator Biden.  We are kidding ourselves if we don't think there are elements out there just waiting for a new president to be elected to try to undermine us and test our meddle.  That is simply another reason to vote for Barack Obama.  I trust his judgement far more than John McCain's.  Plain and simple.
That's very nice of Biden, if you vote for Obama, he won't call you a racist.

As for the unstable people at McCain events, most of them are Obama supporters, like those Code Pink nuts who tried to interrupt McCain's speech at the convention.

I think you'll find far more objectionable people supporting Obama, than you will find supporting McCain.  Code Pink, William Ayers, Rev. Wright, MoveOn, Acorn, and Louis Farakan.  The two things all these people and groups have in common is a hatred of the United States, and a love of Obama.
Yes Becky:  I am sure you will feel much more comfortable with Palin in charge after McUseless falls down and knocks himself unconscious.

McNasty and his sidekick have already proven how panicky they become when a crisis hits. I think you are totally wrong Becky. I am with General Powell and will feel much safer with Barack Obama and Joe Biden in charge.
I trust Obama's judgment more than McCain's. McCain can't even run a campaign, pick a VP, or stick with a policy.
I think Obama has shown he can react calmly to a crisis like he has done in this financial crisis. McCain on the other hand has been irratic and confused.  Even the crisis with Russia and Georgia, Obama waited for additional information.  McCain was impulsive and reacted to quick, before be got more infomation.  Governor Palin wouldn't know how to react at all.  Joe Biden with Barack Obama will, be able to face the crisis, as they have been doing. To me, Joe Biden was reassuring the people, and at the same time asking for their support, letting them. They can't do it by themselves and will need the support from the people of Washington.
Obama first act will be to move for reparations for African-Americans.  It will finally close the harm of our racist past.  However, it will cause a major political crisis for him and the country.
I am a lifelong and devoted Republican. Speaking
for myself, the Neo-Cons have turned the GOP into
the antithesis of the "Declaration of Independence"
and the "Constitution". Senator John McCain by any
reasonable standard has become an individual who
would attempt to achieve his goal of becoming
President at all costs.  My party seems to have
cast aside all sense of character as well as
intellectual rigor, it has lost it's way. Given
the current divisive social and political
environmet in these United States, my firm and heart felt belief that we have not seen a more uniquely qualified candidate as we have in Barak Obama
than perhaps the time of Abraham Lincoln.
We have a chance
Joe, we love you dearly, but --- PUT A LID ON IT!!!! We know what you meant, but this stuff can be used against O, as I heard all day on the msm.  Put a sock in it Joe!!!!!  Just until Nov. 4!!!
It's funny to watch the republican surrogates try to discuss their loser candidate... twisting and squirming while they recite the lie list...

They just can't STAND IT that they are losers....

That Todd guy on Hardball discussing the "down ballot" candidates forgets that John McCain doesn't give a rat's ass about anyone but himself... he doesn't CARE if they win... it's all about JOHN MCCAIN FIRST.

Go ahead, John... make up some more lies. GOD is watching and if you don't know it... kharma's a *itch.
BO is the most liberal senator. He doesn't believe america is about opportunity, instead it's about handouts. He's against nuclear power which, mccain says build 20, obama says he'll consider it. His record of friends is horrible, and it's a joke to think he isn't making deals with people of the like of Bill Ayers. Wake up America, preserve the foundations of our country.
Finally some reason from the Democrats!!  Obama is definitely not experinced enough to handle all the things that are facing the USA these days!!  We need someone with experince to handle all the people who would love to see America brought to her knees.  John McCain is that man!!  Who would Iran (which hates Americans) love to see get into office?  Obama!!  They know who is the easier target to take down.
It is a mistake to think that because John McCain was in the military he would make us safer in the event of an attack.  It may make him more inclined to react immediately militarily.  Unless I missed something, McCain was never involved in strategy on a global scale.
And they would do the same to McCain big deal
