Palin hits Obama on women's issues

HENDERSON, Nev. -- In a complete shift of focus, Palin today devoted almost her entire speech here to women’s issues, suggesting Obama is guilty of gender inequality.

Palin’s argument was both personal and political Tuesday: She made an appeal to break a glass ceiling herself, as she accused Obama of overlooking a woman for a promotion by not choosing Hillary Clinton as his running mate.

“You've got to ask yourself: Why was Sen. Hillary Clinton not even vetted by the Obama campaign?” she said at an outdoor rally outside of Las Vegas. “Why did it take 24 years, an entire generation from the time Geraldine Ferraro made her pioneering bid until the next time that a woman was asked to join a national ticket?”

And she accused Obama of committing gender bias himself by not paying men and women on his Senate staff equally. She said Senate payroll records found women on his staff received 83 cents for every dollar males received. “Does he think that the women aren’t working as hard?” she asked. “Does he think that they are 17% less productive? And Barack Obama can’t say that this is just the way that its always been done around the Capitol, because I know one senator who actually does pay equal wages for equal work, Sen. John McCain.”

The Obama campaign responds, however, that the study Palin was citing has nothing to do with equal pay for equal work. The study noted that men in Obama's Senate office -- not his campaign -- tended to serve in higher-level positions and thus made more money.

Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn added, “Sen. Obama has fought for equal pay for an equal day's work, while Sen. McCain has suggested that women don't get equal pay because they need more education and training. While Sen. Obama has proposed a plan to help working women, the McCain-Palin campaign offers just more negative attacks and distortions.”

Palin's speech today was reminiscent of her earliest remarks after joining the Republican ticket, when she sought to appeal to female voters -- and in particular -- Democrats who backed Clinton in the primary. Palin abandoned mentioning Clinton in her stump speech in August, after her name evoked boos from the Republican crowd.

But attempts to woo Clinton supporters were all over her remarks Tuesday, as she stood with Clinton supporters who represented traditionally liberal outlets like the National Organization of Women and Ms. Magazine. Clinton did particularly well among women in the Nevada caucus in January. *** UPDATE *** Ms. Magazine just called First Read to point out that the supporter Palin stood next to was a former editor-in-chief of the magazine. The magazine hasn't endorsed a candidate.

Palin’s remarks differed widely from her current stump speech. Gone were attacks on Obama centered on his ties to a terrorist or a community group accused of voter-registration fraud. Her attacks from earlier Tuesday -- suggesting Obama was unqualified as commander in chief -- were nowhere to be found.

Campaign aides called her remarks a “closing argument,” and said it was intended to highlight a perceived vulnerability for Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden.

"Our opponents think that they have the women's vote all locked up, which is a little presumptuous,” Palin said. “A little presumptuous since only our side has a woman on the ticket.”

Palin weaved concerns for women into policy discussions, arguing Obama’s tax plan would hurt female-owned small businesses, and pushing for increases in child care, better health care and retirement options.

“It's a matter of fundamental fairness in this country,” she said. “And to make all this happen, working mothers need an advocate, and they will have one when this working mother is working for all of you in the White House.”

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Palin really needs to look at McCain's record before flapping her gums. Just when I think she cant drop any lower.

Glass ceiling, my butt. You are there, Palin, because McCain needed something 'Historical'. You are NOT there on your experience, your views (or lack there off) or your expertise. You are purely window dressing.

Clinton did all the work, you just coasted in and are trying to play yourself off as some sort of pioneer. Sorry, sunshine, you are a stepford wife. You dont even have a freeking clue what the job of VP is!

Anyone woman that votes repub because of Palin is doing nothing but setting back woman's rights 30 years.
If you are a woman and you vote for this nitwit, you can join her back in Alaska when she gets her you- know-what kicked as far as I'm concerned. She's making us look bad!
Did she say she would be in the WHITE HOUSE? I beleive the Vice President stays at BLARE HOUSE. I think she might be jumping the gun before John kicks the bucket. I hope Sen. McCain lives his entire term if elected.
Stop it Sarah...you are pathetic and a poor example for 21st century women...my wife thinks you are setting her sex back 20 years with your deliberate ignorance...
Oh puh-leeeze..Palin's views set women back a century. I'm white, female, middle-aged and a former Alaskan. She does NOT represent me or most of my Alaskan women friends (they're intelligent and progressive thinking.) Palin has lost the respect of intelligent women in this country. Go back to your witch-removing pastor and get a repeat treatment, please!
How the McCain/Palin people can demean women - it's truly amazing! From McCain's dismissing "women's health" with his air quotes in the debate to Palin's desire to disallow abortion in the case of rape or incest to McCain's history of disrepectful and downright ugly remarks about women. I could go on . . . DO NOT think, Governor Palin, that just because you are a woman that all women should vote for you. DO NOT insult the intelligence of women. As a woman, would I want to be enthusiastic about the candidacy of a female candidate? Yes. Do I value my country (oh, but now you'll call me "anti-American" because I don't think as you do) more and want to make a positive choice? YES, I do. I am a proud member of that majority that is EXCITED about voting for Obama/Biden.
Well - I am one - of Millions of Hillary DEMS that will NOT vote for obama. Hillary told us he is NOT qualified - and I believe her.
VOTE McCain/Palin - we can TRUST them
Really? Really - she's going to talk about women's issues? Check out: womenagainstsarahpalin.blogspot.com to see all the many, many, many reasons why Mrs. Palin does not represent women.
I know quite a few "working mothers" (inclidng my own) who find your views toxic and repellant, Governor.

You, Governor, are no Hillary Clinton. And you could live to be 100 and never be anything like her.
I guess the handlers have failed to tell Palin she will be earning 77% of what Cheney earned this year if McCain pulls a miracle and wins this thing?

He is more likely to pull a muscle, there just isn't enough track for him to go the distance.

Better luck during Moose season, Palin. The smart women of America are not buying the BS you're hocking!

(I will give her speech writers props for the funny about Biden's next speaking engagement being another crisis to worry about - that was funny! of course, she didn't write it).
OK. Stop PLEASE!

Roe v. Wade
Viagra yes/woman's drug (can't remember which) NO
Equal Pay for Women (not just the Senate, the World) -- NO!

Want to do something for women, tell Cindy to stop wearing those silly outfit and tendril curls. A woman past 45 SHOULD NEVER, EVER, EVER WEAR TENDRIL CULS.

Palin, you're not fooling anyone.

Don't insult my intelligence.
I'm a woman...and you are no champion of my rights. Neither is McCain.

Next tactic, please.
Sarah Palin is so disgusting. I am ashame of her and she will never represent me. What's next? November 4th can't come soon enough!
She can't possibly be serious....she really takes the cake. Please send her back to Alaska!
FR: "In a complete shift of focus, Palin today..."

Isn't that the McCain campaign's biggest problem in a nutshell? They lack focus (another way of saying, oh, I don't know, maybe erratic?).

And for what new attack message did they make this latest shift? The McCain campaign arguing that Obama isn't strong on gender equity.

Um, okay. Are these people trying to lose?

They have to realize that every news report that picks up the message will note the obvious disparity in comments on the subject made by Obama and by McCain.
Sarah, they should pay you less than any male VP because you don't even know what the duties of a VP are.
You're kidding, right, Governor Palin? Just a few days ago, John McCain was railing against the "liberal feminist agenda", and now you are trying to pass yourself off as the new face of the feminist movement? You are beyond insufferable at this point.

Here's a question for you:
Why haven't you taken your own running mate to task for his stances against: 1)equal pay for equal work, 2)children's health care, and 3)insurance coverage for birth control?

Of course, your own political career raises more than a few feminist eyebrows...also. Maybe you should just head back to Alaska and figure out a way to reduce the horrific levels of violence against women there. You betcha.
Palin, stop it already! Do NOT insult my intelligence. I was a strong Hillary supporter, and even if I had not decided to support Obama, I would opt out of voting altogether rather than vote for you!
Hey! Sarah! Yeah you, you silly twit. If you're trying to compare your so-called qualifications to Senotor Clinton's, just forget it, OK? You're a small town non-entity. And always will be unless your home state indicts you for malfeasance. Then I think you'll be right where you belong. In the trash can of the past.
Sarah Palin incites hate, Racism in Her "Country First" speeches. I am a felame and it scares me that she could one day lead our country she is clueless on issues that face the nation. Sarah needs to take her act back to SNL, that is the only place she is capable of being President. Seanator MCain only choose her because she is a female and felt she would pacify the female voters. The Republican party has no idea, this country is a melting pot of many different races and they are so closed minded. ObomaBiden is what this nation needs not the good ole boy country first.
I am so not going there with Palin.... Is it Election Day yet so we can send her home?

Palin is pathetic. She's a coward who hides behind a real woman ready to lead, Hillary Clinton. It's weak for Palin to use Hillary's name hoping to turn women against Obama. What she ought to do is denounce how McCain has treated her in the past...not letting her talk to the media because he thinks she's stupid...even though he's right.

Why did Johnny pick u Palin ?
Gov. Palin if you want to talk to someone about womens issues maybe you should look right next to you. Senator McCain is the one who messed that one up.
Palin speaking for the women of America?
OK, Sarah, what else have your trainers been teaching you to say?
She is better than a real parrot because some people actually buy into it.
Has anyone figured out who she was claiming to be supporting her from NOW at her appearance in Nevada? The national PAC has endorsed Obama and the Nevada NOW chapter has been working hard for his election in Nevada. So who did she claim to be representing NOW in her rally?
Goveror Palin I would say it is pretty presumptuous of you to assume that women would vote for your ticket just because there is a women on it. We are alot smarter than you give us credit for.
I think that McCain was extremly presumptuous when he thought that women would vote for him just because he put a women on his ticket. I feel that this was in fact very degrading towards women. If he thought that women were that shallow, shame on him. There is no way I would ever vote for McCain, especially with Sarah Palin on the ticket.
Iknow this has nothing to do directly with the topic.
I would like to know if it is true that Vice President Dick Cheney endorse Senator Obama?

You have GOT to be kidding me: "Only our side has a woman on the ticket!"? That's the compelling argument? Oh, well, then, sign me up to vote for Governor Palin right now! Who cares if Obama co-sponsored and helped reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, designed to help reduce domestic violence, or co-sponsored the Illinois Equal Pay Act for women - and forget about those two other fair pay acts he's worked on in the Senate. (You know, the Fair Pay Restoration Act, the one he pushed through with that bipartisan group, and the Fair Pay Act?) I'm sure he doesn't care as much as Sarah does - and I know I certainly want a woman like Governor Palin looking after my reproductive rights!

So nevermind that I don't agree with Governor Palin on social, economic, or foreign policy issues. I'm just so happy she has breasts that I can't wait to give her my vote!

... does anyone else wonder if she hit her head too hard on that glass ceiling?
Oh Please Miss "Todd Palin" You for Women's Issues you got to be kidding me.
Why is it that no real journalist will play the entire clip of Biden saying that people will not like how Obama responds to an international crisis when he is tested? Is it because the media is so far up Obama that they couldn't find their way out with a tour guide?
"Our opponents think that they have the women's vote all locked up, which is a little presumptuous,” Palin said. “A little presumptuous since only our side has a woman on the ticket.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Isn't it a little *presumptuous* of Palin to expect us women to vote for a ticket *because* it has a female on it? Does she believe all women are ignorant?
...I will be voting for the ticket that has the brains to run our country effectively.
Obama/Biden '08
Lol this woman is like a truck load of junk just rattles on as if she dosen't have the foggest notion of whats she's saying or doing.Seems she has some kind of disorder for her mind can't stay on one subject long enough to put two coherant lines in the same block.Thank God election is near don't believe I could stand much more of that nut...
God help all women (myself included) if we have to rely on this self-serving wench to fight for womens rights. This narcissistic opportunist should not be any where near power or authority. She and her party would set womens rights far back, she doesn't give a hoot for anyone but Sara. Please send her packing back to Alaska NEVER to be seen in these parts again.
If any reporter is ever able to ask her a question at any point, ask her why McCain was against the Equal Pay for Equal Work act last year (which Obama supported).
McCain / Palin are grasping at straws and have no vision or policies to put forward -- that's why they always focus on tearing others down & negative campaigning.
Sarah Palin may be a female but that alone is not now, nor will it ever be, the reason to elect someone to the second highest office in this country. In fact, Palin is a huge step backward for women in politics. She represents every belief, policy, and practice that creates inequality for women and she may be the most "anti" woman person running this year. She is a woman without substance, vision, intellect, curiosity, honesty, honor...... the list goes on. I am a middle aged white woman - one of the coveted voters, I believe - and I can say without hesitation that there is no circumstance or argument at this point that would convince me to vote for Sarah Palin or for Mr McCain - a man who demonstrated quite clearly his contempt for women by picking Palin as his running mate. If Sarah Palin ends up being the female who cracks the much discussed glass ceiling, then our entire system is cracked, perhaps beyond repair.
This would be more effective if her running mate hadn't used air quotes when discussing the woman's health exception to abortions and also voted against equal pay bills multiple times.
“Why did it take 24 years, an entire generation from the time Geraldine Ferraro made her pioneering bid until the next time that a woman was asked to join a national ticket?”
Part of the answer must lie with the Republican Party. Why did they wait 24 years? after the "glass ceiling" was broken.
To paraphrase Reagen, I know Geraldine Ferraro and Palin is no Geraldine Ferraro.
She keeps moving her mouth and nothing of substance comes out. This is one woman whose vote is locked in for Obama.
I am a woman that lives in the Red state of Arizona and I am proudly a democrat. Since the day Palin has been nominated I have been embarrassed for her and more so for Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is twice the woman Palin could dream to be, but instead of a strong, well-educated woman representing women we get Palin? It bothers me that a woman who is a right wing pro-life even at the expense of the woman's life is talking about how she is going to be an advocate for woman. It bothers me that a this “woman’s woman” this “hockey mom” from the big in size but small in numbers state of Alaska can even begin to understand what it is like to be a woman outside of her right wing conservative bubble. Friends of mine can’t get married because they are lesbians. I am sure Palin anti-gay marriage rules won’t help them in the white house. A girl I went to school with was raped and had to drive 100 miles to a different city to get the day after pill, because republican minded pharmacists felt it was morally wrong to give it to her. Is Palin going to help her when she is in office… no! I am a single woman that pays a great deal each month for health care, because it is not provided at either location I work. I have my BFA in Theatre Education and I can’t use it because of budget cuts all over the country. I work in the education profession where woman dominate it, so I am not that concerned for my own equal pay. I am concerned I am going to get paid at all. Does she care about me? No, the only candidate that has even mentioned keeping fine arts in schools to give students a healthier, well balanced education is Obama. Also, Obama’s health care plan is a great plan for me and the millions of people in my same situation. I am insulted that Palin even suggests that she will be an advocate for women. She is only going to be an advocate for women that fit into a specific mold and the rest of us will be fighting by ourselves for ourselves like we have for the last eight years.
Palin has her facts wrong again! Obama-Biden have a very good voting records on women's rights. Obama-Biden have done more to help women in this country move forward that McCain-Palin. That is just fact! Why is Palin still running around after violating her subpoena, violating ethics laws, and abusing her powers as Governor? Justice needs to be enforced here quickly! Palin needs to be speaking to investigators back in Alaska. She does not have the legal right to spew more disinformation around the nation.She lost this right when she made the choice to break the laws of ethics. What a joke!
McCaim and Palin will say anything and stop at nothing trying to stop Obama.I really think McCain is not running for president,but only to stop Obama from
being elected.really a dirty scum campain as far as I am concerned.
Iknow this has nothing to do directly with the topic.
I would like to know if it is true that Vice President Dick Cheney endorse Senator Obama?
who is this woman??? with her beliefs, and outrageous verbal attacks,not to mention lack of knowledge on numerous critical issues... speaking half truths,she sets women back 40 years!!!
I must shout out that this woman does not have a clue what she is saying, she can not as of today know what the Vice President's job description is. How can a woman who is anti Choice, Against equal pay for equal work, is anti gay, against the freedom to practice free thinking say she knows what "Clinton Woman are about". Once again it is half the truth that is the lie. It is time to get her out of the national stage, we are looking to the rest of the world like idiots and McCain has lost his place in History. She is a liability to the party and to the United States of all American's
Sarah, its a little presumptious of you to think you deserve my vote merely because you have 2 X chromosomes.
OMG!! And here we were all wondering why Silly Sarah Palin wasn't vetted by the McCain campaign!! I guess it took 24 years because the Repubs are 24 years behind the Democrats on this and many other issues! And here 24 years later, the best they could come up with was Silly Sarah??
