Palin hits Obama on women's issues

HENDERSON, Nev. -- In a complete shift of focus, Palin today devoted almost her entire speech here to women’s issues, suggesting Obama is guilty of gender inequality.

Palin’s argument was both personal and political Tuesday: She made an appeal to break a glass ceiling herself, as she accused Obama of overlooking a woman for a promotion by not choosing Hillary Clinton as his running mate.

“You've got to ask yourself: Why was Sen. Hillary Clinton not even vetted by the Obama campaign?” she said at an outdoor rally outside of Las Vegas. “Why did it take 24 years, an entire generation from the time Geraldine Ferraro made her pioneering bid until the next time that a woman was asked to join a national ticket?”

And she accused Obama of committing gender bias himself by not paying men and women on his Senate staff equally. She said Senate payroll records found women on his staff received 83 cents for every dollar males received. “Does he think that the women aren’t working as hard?” she asked. “Does he think that they are 17% less productive? And Barack Obama can’t say that this is just the way that its always been done around the Capitol, because I know one senator who actually does pay equal wages for equal work, Sen. John McCain.”

The Obama campaign responds, however, that the study Palin was citing has nothing to do with equal pay for equal work. The study noted that men in Obama's Senate office -- not his campaign -- tended to serve in higher-level positions and thus made more money.

Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn added, “Sen. Obama has fought for equal pay for an equal day's work, while Sen. McCain has suggested that women don't get equal pay because they need more education and training. While Sen. Obama has proposed a plan to help working women, the McCain-Palin campaign offers just more negative attacks and distortions.”

Palin's speech today was reminiscent of her earliest remarks after joining the Republican ticket, when she sought to appeal to female voters -- and in particular -- Democrats who backed Clinton in the primary. Palin abandoned mentioning Clinton in her stump speech in August, after her name evoked boos from the Republican crowd.

But attempts to woo Clinton supporters were all over her remarks Tuesday, as she stood with Clinton supporters who represented traditionally liberal outlets like the National Organization of Women and Ms. Magazine. Clinton did particularly well among women in the Nevada caucus in January. *** UPDATE *** Ms. Magazine just called First Read to point out that the supporter Palin stood next to was a former editor-in-chief of the magazine. The magazine hasn't endorsed a candidate.

Palin’s remarks differed widely from her current stump speech. Gone were attacks on Obama centered on his ties to a terrorist or a community group accused of voter-registration fraud. Her attacks from earlier Tuesday -- suggesting Obama was unqualified as commander in chief -- were nowhere to be found.

Campaign aides called her remarks a “closing argument,” and said it was intended to highlight a perceived vulnerability for Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden.

"Our opponents think that they have the women's vote all locked up, which is a little presumptuous,” Palin said. “A little presumptuous since only our side has a woman on the ticket.”

Palin weaved concerns for women into policy discussions, arguing Obama’s tax plan would hurt female-owned small businesses, and pushing for increases in child care, better health care and retirement options.

“It's a matter of fundamental fairness in this country,” she said. “And to make all this happen, working mothers need an advocate, and they will have one when this working mother is working for all of you in the White House.”

Well, she's gonna lose this one too! How dare she suggest that Obama is unfair to women!!! After all the times he has talked about his mom & grandmother & how they shaped his life. This dog won't hunt either!!!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08
Gov. Palin, your botched interviews prove you are a bimbo and you CANNOT compare yourself to Hillary Clinton or Geri Ferraro.
boyhowdy!! this palin is so clueless, she needs to read mccain's records on women rights! he was against domestic violence rights for women, agaist equal pay as men's shoot the list goes on!!! this palin needs to shut her trap, i'm sorry, but palin sickens me, there are millions of women out there a hell of more qualify then this bimbo from alaska!!!
Is she retarded...?
Desperation; congering up old talking points leads me to believe they are out of ideas and out of time.  Expect them to reserecht Rev Wright by the middle of next week!

I've got a better question...

Why was Governor Palin not even vetted by the McCain Campaign...AND ALLOWED TO RUN ON THE TICKET ANYWAY?
No Palin is "Wrong Again". Sen. Obama is more aware of women issues, concerned more about women's 'Health' issues than Palin is. This Palin is a stupid.

Oh, give me a break!  McCain has a sorry, sorry history in the public arena regarding women's issues (equal pay, reproductive rights, health care, etc), not to mention his apparent lack of respect for women in his private life.  Who do they think they're kidding?
Give me a break  Palin has no shame.
Our opponents think that they have the women's vote all locked up, which is a little presumptuous,” Palin said. “A little presumptuous since only our side has a woman on the ticket.”

I guess that is why Michelle Obama and Caroline Kennedy have been touring the country concentrating on womens groups.  Michelle, especially has been spending a lot of time with military wives of servicemen who are currently overseas and aren't getting the support that they need.
The Obama campaign has also had a number of online forums dealing with women's issues specifically.

It is too late for Palin.  People now are well aware that she is willing to say whatever the campaign puts on the teleprompter for her.  Unfortunately, we also know that she has little comprehension of what she says.  She is unable to give any truthful concrete examples of anything she says.

People were very eager to accept Sarah Palin, if only she had displayed a bit of humility and honesty.  But she has shown nothing but disrespect and contempt for the American people as she tried to bluff her way into a position that she is totally unqualified for.

That is putting personal ambition first, not country.
I'm a 55 yr.old woman. The wife of an Afghanistan veteran.I will with great pride vote for OMAMA/BIDEN! After watching another "gaffe" of Palins about the role of the vp this woman is totally unqualified to the office. This republican campaign is causing so much damage to the credence of our democracy. The lies, inuendo and scare tactics are disgusting. Also using tax payer $ to ship her kids around on trips, then changing the books oh you maverick you!! Hey if the RNC has any extra $ will they buy me some clothes? It's getting cold out and I need warm clothes!!!
What in the world would she know about women's issues? She's against just about everything the women's movement stands for.  Isn't asking women to vote for her because she's a woman a weeeee bit sexist?  And don't forget to save up for your own rape kits, ladies.
Somebody send this poor woman home before she dies of stupidity.
Dear Governor Palin,

Had Senator Clinton been placed on the Democratic ticket, the Republicans would have had absolutely no use for you, and maybe the race would be a little closer.  Something to think about, Sarah...
Another lie from Senator liar...I guess that is why majority of Americans think she is unqualify.
While we are trying to figure out if John McCain is Tinkie-Winkie,Po,Dipsie, or LaLa,Sara, please go to Rolling Stone John McCain the Make Believe Maverick article. It certainly tells you exactly what we already know. Go Obama/Biden!!!!!!

Yeah, unfortunately, it's not a woman qualified to be VP.  Although she seems to think she can "pal around with senators." What a pathetic excuse for a human being!
Sarah Palin is a stupid bigot.  She is seriously like the Paris Hilton of politics, except I don't think Paris Hilton is a bigot so I apologize to her for the association.  John McCain is either suffering from some form of senile dementia or he has officially sold his soul.  I wonder whether he even realizes how much damage he has done to his own name and his own reputation in this campaign.
Palin has no right to criticize Obama on womens issues! While she was mayor, Alaska had the audacity to charge rape victims for their kits! This is in a state where rape is a rampant crime. McCain will not get a vote from me. Palin is a seriously flawed candidate.
Since the RNC is paying upwards of $100,000 for Sarah Palin's styling and wardrobe, they are probably also paying for her childcare needs. She is not the typical working mother and I am surprised religious women are falling for her spiel because they often believe meaning lies in homelife.
Lady, you are no Hillary Clinton, you don't even deserve to wipe the sweat from her brow.  Being a woman is THE ONLY reason you're on the GOP ticket, not because you have done anything to promote women's issues in this country, and any woman worth a damn can tell the difference between a woman who has earned her way in this world, and one who has flirted her way.

How dare you or your party claim to be a champion for women's issues. Your record as mayor & governor tell the opposite story.  You are where you are because you are riding on the coat tails of truly inspirational and motivational women, like HRC.  Your behavior in this race is shameful, even downright detestable.  You have set women in politics back by decades.

Maybe you should take a lesson and spend the next the next eight years actually EARNING yourself a position on a Presidential ticket.
She thinks I will vote for her because she is a woman and I am a woman?  Get real!  I will vote for the person I think who will be the best Prsident despite his/her gender, ethnicity or religious affiliation!
