*** Swing states swinging to Obama
: Most of the national polls -- including our NBC/WSJ survey -- are now showing Obama with a double-digit national lead. And here come a slew of brand-new state polls that also suggest Obama is in command of this presidential contest. The University of Wisconsin’s Big Ten Battleground polls have Obama up 10 points in Indiana (51%-41%), 13 points in Iowa (52%-39%), 22 in Michigan (58%-36%), 19 in Minnesota (57%-38%), 12 in Ohio (53%-41%), 11 in Pennsylvania (52%-41%), 13 in Wisconsin (53%-40%), and nearly 30 in Obama’s home state of Illinois (61%-32%). Meanwhile, there are new Quinnipiac surveys that show Obama up five points in Florida (49%-44%), 14 in Ohio (52%-38%), and 13 in Pennsylvania (53%-40%). And finally, new CNN/Time surveys find Obama ahead by five points among likely voters in Nevada (51%-46%), four points in North Carolina (51%-47%), four in Ohio (50%-46%), and 10 points in Virginia (54%-44%). The lone state survey that shows McCain ahead: CNN/Time’s West Virginia poll, where McCain’s nine (53%-44%).

Video: NBC Deputy Political Director Mark Murray offers his first read on the Midwest battleground polls showing huge leads for Democrat Barack Obama.

*** McCain vs. Bush: Be sure not to miss McCain’s exclusive interview with the Washington Times, in which the Arizona senator lashes out at President Bush. “Sen. John McCain on Wednesday blasted President Bush for building a mountain of debt for future generations, failing to pay for expanding Medicare and abusing executive powers, leveling his strongest criticism to date of an administration whose unpopularity may be dragging the Republican Party to the brink of a massive electoral defeat. ‘We just let things get completely out of hand,’ he said of his own party's rule in the past eight years.” A very senior GOP strategist emails Politico’s Mike Allen in response: “Lashing out at past Republican congresses instead of Pelosi and Reid, and echoing your opponent's attacks on you instead of attacking your opponent, and spending 150,000 hard dollars on designer clothes when congressional Republicans are struggling for money, and when your senior campaign staff are blaming each other for the loss in The New York Times [Magazine] 10 days before the election, you’re not doing much to energize your supporters.” Oh snap.

*** So when will we see those medical records? In Brian Williams’ interview with the GOP ticket yesterday, Palin announced that she would agree to release her medical records. “If that will allow some curiosity seekers, perhaps, to have one more thing that they either check the box off that they can find something to criticize or to rest them assured over. I'm healthy, happy, I've had five kids. That’s going to be in the medical records -- never seriously ill or hurt. You'll see that in the medical records.”

*** The dangers of parachuting in: Spending part of the day with the McCain-Palin campaign for yesterday’s interview was both an enviable and unenviable task. It's always tricky to over-read exhaustion. The campaign pushed back hard on an initial impression one of us said on MSNBC -- that there was a lack of chemistry between McCain and Palin during the interview -- and cautioned us not to read too much into the campaign soup that's exhaustion, mixed with a couple of tough news days for the ticket, some bad poll numbers, a healthy skepticism of the press, a pretty tough New York Times Magazine piece, and the fact that the two candidates don't spend every day together. It was the same dynamic as you might see with Obama and Biden, except they have the luxury of having the motivation of positive news on their side, which can loosen folks up. Bottom line: The McCain campaign appears a bit tight (which is understandable given where we are in the campaign). But there is a bunker mentality that folks like us, when we parachute in, can miss. It's a good lesson for all of us: Always be cautious from over-analyzing a situation; it can be dangerous punditry.

*** One other point: This is not an easy time for the trailing campaign, as more and more outsiders begin pointing fingers and assigning blame. It's human nature to look over your shoulder and wonder what's coming next. The McCain campaign team seems to be a more cohesive bunch than Kerry’s, Gore’s or Dole’s, so the backbiting might be held to a minimum. But it doesn't make it any easier to read these pre-bituaries.

*** When politics and baseball collide: GOP strategist Craig Shirley emails First Read this thought: “If you are looking to complete the circle between 1980 and 2008, consider this: The last time the Phillies were in the World Series was … 1980, when they beat the Royals in five. Reagan himself defied history because the guideline for the 20th century was when an American League team won the series, the GOP won the presidency, and when the National League team won the Series, a Democrat won the White House.” *** UPDATE *** Shirley meant to say the last time the Phillies were in the World Series AND won.

*** Fun fact of the day: The end of Yale's reign, courtesy of NBC's Robert Windrem and Garrett Haake: This will be the first time in 40 years that Yale will not have one of its former students on the ballot as president or vice president. Not since Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew battled Hubert H. Humphrey and Edmund Muskie in 1968 has Yale been shut out. Though Yale has had the last three presidents (and five overall), Harvard (where Obama went to law school) boasts the most presidents -- seven. And the only president to boast of degrees from both... George W. Bush. As for John McCain, per NBC's Abby Livingston, he would be only the second Naval Academy graduate to rise to commander in chief. The other was Jimmy Carter.

*** On the trail: McCain embarks on a “Joe the Plumber” bus tour across Florida. Obama holds a rally in Indianapolis before heading to Hawaii to visit his seriously ill grandmother. Biden is in North Carolina, hitting rallies in Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and Raleigh. And Palin holds rallies in Troy, OH and Beaver, OH.

I see McCain sprinting away from Bush; but he did vote with him 90% of the time AND he bragged about it 'loud and proud'.  So, you can run from the facts; but you just can't hide.

Joe the Plumber is the perfect metaphor as the former 'straight talk express' plummets over the cliff.  There are a couple of basic myths in the Republican party:

1.  Extreme wealth is easy to obtain and they let anyone in.  This is such a fallacy for the Average Joe.  Joe W. himself acted in his question to Obama like he was just weeks away from buying this business.  Reality is that he earns far too little to even get credit for a purchase of that value and because of his 'back taxes' etc. seems to have a pattern of not saving.

2.  Republicans are Christians and represent 'Christian Values'.  This is one that just sticks out like a sore thumb.  There is nothing about this scorched earth, win at all costs, call the other guy whatever to win party that represents anything remotely resembling Chrisianity, as I've read about in the New Testament.

3.  Republicans are looking out for 'average Americans'.  This is the biggest glaring myth of all this year.  Wealth protects wealth and if anything trickles down, it isn't sweat from labor - it is overflow from cups running over at the top.

The real question in this election is:

Haven't you had enough?
I think Obama actually has a decent shot at taking OKLAHOMA or at least making showing HUGE gains here.  Even a close election here would be historic and I believe we are about to see history in the making.
LANDSLIDE is coming. Barack Hussein Obama will be our next president. The world will rejoice!!
Halleluiah! Halleluiah! Halleluiah!
Leon Houston, have you (or anyone else out there) noticed that our last two Secretaries of Education are from Texas?  No wonder we rank where we rank in math and science education!
Obama and Biden need to embark on a " Joe the CEO" tour. What a brilliant way to fight back on that nonsense; to remind voters that McCain's tax policy will help (here comes that dirty word,) CEO's.... not Joe the Plumber, Nancy the Nurse, Trudy the Teacher, ot Tommy the Truck Driver!!!!!!! Gobama, gobama, gobama!!!! I am so excited about polls, but want to remond all to VOTE!! Take nothing for granted!
Vote Bob Barr conservatives and independents.  Obama is not the answer even though he will defeat McCain and stupid Palin.  America is conservative and so is the Libertarian party.  Bob Barr doesn't flip flop like Moe and Curly.  Jump ship republicans and come over to the third party America needs so badly.
While the polls are encouraging, they are just that - polls - not votes.  I voted early yesterday in Florida. Everyone needs to vote and we can make it so for Obama.
These polls look great but as THAT ONE said, lets not get cocky. This isn't over until 11/5. Those who support Obama, please do all you can to help get out the vote. Call battleground states, do drive for change etc., It ain't over till it's over and we hav e to keep our eyes on the ball.
>>>Double Digits? Well yeah, for the phony polls. Others show a tie or a slight lead for McCain. You know, like the AP poll. Like anyone has ever heard of them. I guess we should just believe the Burger King/Blockbuster Movies poll instead

So you're saying that only the polls that show a single-digit lead for Obama, or a McCain lead are the REAL polls?  You're just as bad as those who divide America into "real" America and "fake" America.  I suppose if the AP poll showed a more significant lead for Obama, they would be a "phony" poll as well.

Obama/Biden '08!

Chuck/Brian:

How come you guys blew it when McCain tried to refute Colin Powell's endorsement by mentioning 5 Republicans.  You guys should have responded, "Well, Senator McCain, any former Democratic Secretary of States endorsing you?"
Obama's poll numbers are nothing short of ASTONISHING, but they won't mean anything if we don't vote, vote, vote.

So, FR, when will you start moving some more swing states from toss-up to lean/likely Obama? Or do you guys need to keep states in the toss-up column to give the impression of a close race?

In any event, I can't wait for November 5th. I'm ready to crown a winner!
There is a reason McCain's campaign team seems cohesive.  They have been together through the Bush campaigns of 2000 and 2004, not to mention probably also in 2006.  If not on the campaign trail, they have all worked together in the Bush White House.  McCain assembled the team that has surrounded George Bush, starting with Steve Schmidt, Randy Scheuneman (apologize for the spelling), Nicole Wallace, various key speech writers, the reprehensible person who savaged him (McCain) in South Carolina in 2000, etc.  I'm actually surprised the Obama/Biden campaign hasn't made more of the Bush/McCain campaign team.  We have seen a campaign than has surpassed the Lee Atwater, Karl Rove dirty politics tactics, which is quite an astonishing achievement for Steve Schmidt.  What has John McCain been thinking unleashing this toxic--but apparently cohesive--team?
It's sad that a governor of ANY state has no clue the duties of the vice president of the United States.  If I were a citized of Alaska, I would be ashamed.
Biden's hair plugs we're paid for with tax payer money.

why are they muzzling him and where's the media outrage?
The polls have been wrong, hopefully they are right this time around.
We need a new direction for this country other than the Republican bold face lies and fear tactics.
Obama will win but it will require all the new registered voters to vote.
Obama/Biden 08&12
Don't trust the polls people, McCain and the GOP are trying to steal the election again. Vote early!
Craig Shirley obviously doesn't know his baseball history. The Phillies were last in the World Series in 1993 and won in 6 games over the Toronto Blue Jays.
The AP poll was heavily flawed.

Poor Tei, you keep holding on but you really should start embracing the facts. The McCain campaign is a thing of fiction.
Hey Tei Potts:

You claim that the AP poll shows a tight race.  The AP poll undervalued the role of young voters, thereby making it appear to be closer than it is.  The average 10 point gap stems from younger voters being picked up in those surveys.
Obama supporters are mindless jellyfish.  YES WE CAN??  That is all they have to say for themselves.  They can never mention one piece of major legioslation that he helped pass.  They can never mention a great accomplishment of his (attending Harvard is not an accomplishment.  They are ridiculously uninformed.
1993 World Series - Phillies vs. Blue Jays
Mr T.

You saw what you saw.  You heard what you heard.  Trust your instincts.  McCain's crowd is in shock and is barking at you for telling the truth.  How could they loose, they think to themselves, when they represent God and the Democrats are:  terrorist-socialist-communist-eliteist scumbags from Hell?

You saw accurrately.  Thank you for telling the truth.
Full Moon: pls explain the ties between AIP and Palin and the abuse of power that is evident. And the proven tie between Keating and McCain.

ACORN is a made up lie by conservatives there is no tie to that organization and Obama.
My dear Friend George,,,,,I'm sorry but it's under the bus for you,my President. After I supported you 90% of the time you and you alone have messed up my chance to win,ok maybe picking Neiman Marcus Barbie wasn't the best selection but hay I had to listen to the base if I wanted there money.Soon you and I will fade into the washinton of days gone by and we sit on the porch and sip Buds together.Lets see here Harvard 7 presidents,Yale 5,Naval Academy?Anyone know which of the five collages Saraha went to she got her degree from?
Palin's medical records will reveal severe brain damage!  LOL!!
Couple of things. The Phillies were also in the World Series in 1993 when Mitch Williams gave up the game-winning home run to Joe Carter. Also, the Phillies beat the Royals in six, not five, games.
Over the years I have seen this country that I love go from being a country that fought for freedoms here and around the country to what I am seeing in this electionas a country which hates any voice that differs from itself.
Last night Chris Matthews crossed the line to the point of absolute hatred for Sarah Palin!
HAve we trult gotten to the point where a difference of opinion meas people like Chris Matthews and Keith Oberman rule the day and Rachel Madoe is the more level headed.
Where on Morning Joe people have to tread lightly or else Joe gets hate mail if he tries to act like the conservative he once was.
MSNBC has been playing to the hate mongers on the left the entire election season and with Chris and Keith on twice a night they have decieded that they have found a home with those who hate anything other than their own opinions.
Go ahead and hate all you want.
Remember you are the ones who are saying McCain has gone completly negative and yet you are far worse than he has ever been!
Uh...the Phillies were in the World Series in 1993, against the Blue Jays, and lost.  And we had a Democratic President.  I'm for Obama, and the Mets, so Go Rays!
Hey Full Moon, obviously, you were not listening during the 3rd debate when Obama said  "Ayers has not advised me during this campaign and he will not be advising me in the White House."

However, since Sunday when Gen. Colin Powell endorsed Obama very eloquently I might add, that Gen. Powell has been advising him and will advise him if he wins the election.

Chuck Todd, I enjoy your map and your First Reads.

McCain is looking tired. If you have listened to any of his recent speeches you couldn't miss the mistakes.

He needs a rest and becomming POTUS is like being on the campaign trail every day.

Just saying.....
Hey Chuck Todd,
Could you please fix your electoral map. It has been out of date for weeks. Real Clear Politics has it 306 Obama McCain 160 with 72 toss up electoral votes.
You have been at stuck at 264 for Obama for weeks.
It MUST be a FULL MOON when the wackos are still whining about ACORN, an organization that McCain himself spoke of often in yr. 2000 as a very important Community organization! ACORN is REQUIRED by law to turn in ALL Registrations including Mickey Mouse - but I want to meet the Poll worker who lets Mickey come in to vote on 11/04/08!

If nothing else a "padded" voter Registration list may HELP get MORE machines into the Red State polling places - but these lists will NOT affect the results... if they do I want to see rabid Republicans escorting Mickey and Minnie out in handcuffs!
No blaming the campain.
McCain-Palin is just a weak ticket.  Republicans need to come up with some better canidates in 2012.  Somebody who is smart, educated, not retirement age, not a right wing nut, etc, etc,,,
The comment by "leon houston" about his daughter's teacher is very disturbing and sad. Why don't you folks track him down and do a story?
Tei,,
Look at the polling procedures of the AP poll, and you'll discover why it is out of wack as compared to every other poll..If you ask only McCain supporters who are they going to vote for, what do you think the answer would be? Educate yourself..
