Biden's Friday in West Virginia

From NBC's Ron Allen

The nation's most senior senator, Robert C. Byrd, looks a bit frail these days -- but he remains quite feisty. On Friday, in the heart of Charleston, WV, he sat on stage in a wheelchair, with an appropriate-sized lectern and microphone in front of him, tucked next to the main podium, as Joe Biden made the Democratic ticket's first foray here for Barack Obama.

Until recently, the Mountain State seemed beyond reach.

Byrd sat flanked by the state's other Democratic heavyweights, Sen. Jay Rockefeller and Gov. Joe Manchin, a powerful united front trying to make a strong last minute case for Obama-Biden.

Byrd's voice was muffled, at times almost lost in the PA system, and difficult to hear as he read his remarks. Manchin helped by turning the pages. Seemingly unable to summon more volume, Byrd instead repeated the candidates' names -- and others he wanted to emphasize -- numerous times, to help drive his message. A well-placed holler helped too. As in, "my friend and colleague, Barack Obama, Whoa man! Yeah! Barack Obama... showed outstanding judgment when he asked Joe Biden! Joe Biden! Joe Biden to join the ticket." Byrd praised Biden as "no child of privilege" and someone who "knows how to work hard, earn a daily bread. And beans." Byrd punched the air with a somewhat shaky fist. The crowd loved him.

Could West Virginia be falling for Obama-Biden as well?

Obama and Biden have watched the polls narrow in a state that Obama was unable to connect with during the primary season; Hillary Clinton trounced him here by some 40 percentage points. It's among the country's poorest, oldest, least diverse, and least educated states. It's a heavily Democratic state President Bush won twice, the second time by a wide margin. It's the only state completely in Appalachia, where God and guns, family and flag can trump all else. And there's a historical quirk here that Clinton talked about again and again to make her case for the nomination -- that no Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia. Yet another bit of political folklore that could change in 2008.

All of that was before the financial crisis started taking jobs, savings, and retirements away. Most recent polls still give John McCain a lead of six points or more. However, Rockefeller told the crowd his own poll puts the race in a dead heat. What's more, there are polls from across the nation that suggest Obama's support among white voters is surging. Some even predict he may get the highest share of those voters since Jimmy Carter in '76. No Democrat has won a majority of white voters since Johnson in '64. That dynamic may be what's helping here. It appears voters are becoming more pragmatic as America's economic outlook worsens.

In Charleston, local analyst Robert Rupp of Wesleyan College pointed out some unique West Virginia quirks revealed in a recent poll -- one of the only polls he said that asked locally about matters of race and religion. When asked if "things here...are headed in the right direction?" 46% said yes. Nationally, a huge majority (sometimes about 90%) believes the exact opposite. The West Virginia poll found that one in five West Virginians believes Obama is a Muslim; in fact, he's a Christian. But just 46% here believe that. In addition, some 15% said race is a very or somewhat important factor as to whom will get their vote.

Those findings came to life in the crowd in Charleston listening to Biden. As workers dismantled the stage, lowered the huge American flag next to the bank building, and everyone went back to work, I chatted with a few Obama volunteers about his prospects. They were optimistic. Hopeful. Anxious about what the campaign's final week might bring. One man admitted he still hears a fair number of Obama doubters while canvassing. He even revealed that his brother won't vote for Obama. Why, I asked? "Because he's a redneck," he said. Here, as in other places, the question may be whether pocketbooks prevail over prejudice?

After all the votes are counted next Tuesday, that might be an old story that much of the nation has passed. Again, a new poll suggests Obama is doing just fine with white voters, just as he did through the primaries his supporters often point out.

It's doubtful that Obama or Biden will double back through West Virginia. Its five Electoral Votes are not as significant as the bigger numbers in other battleground states. Al Gore, of course, might beg to differ: Had he won this state that Bill Clinton won twice, Florida would not have mattered.

Obama and Biden will probably leave the final week's heavy lifting to the local leaders who know these voters best -- like Byrd, Rockefeller and Manchin. A quick check of Byrd's biography reveals that he won his first election here in 1946, a seat in the state's House of Delegates. He has seen a lot come and go. His thinking has changed dramatically about matters of race. He has apologized for his past.

Now Byrd seems determined to bring enough of his constituents in line to help deliver the state for Obama and Biden. It was quite a moment that chilly afternoon, when Byrd rallied his fellow West Virginians to support "the next president" -- pausing and turning his head to the heavens. "Hear me now...the next president of the United States, Barack Obama! Barack Obama! Barack Obama!......!!"

The last hope for McCain!!!
GO JOE GO ! GO JOE GO ! GO JOE GO ! GO JOE GO ! YES WE WILL !!!!  YES CHANGE IS COMMING !!!
It is very possible there are democrats and republicans who will vote for Barack but will never tell a pollster or anyone else they will. But what they do in the privacy of the voting booth is different. We won't know until Nov. 4th.
Senator Byrd: He gets it with this Administration. He always got it. From day one. He was afraid of no one. He is the voice I will always remember in the days leading up to voting for or against the invasion of Iraq. That image of him is forever cemented in my memory.
Ever figured out why Sarah Palin will not release her medical records ... possiblity of a pregnancy terminated (abortion) on her file ! .. going against her policy .. Now I'm a liberal ... and totally for womens rights ... but we have to call it for what it is .
Just sayin'

Even Senator Byrd now marches to a different drummer. Miracles do happen still.
Byrd's voice may be muffled and weak due to age and illness yet it speaks volumes to the American people.

It’s just ludicrous for any American to negate the needs of this country including… an unnecessary war budget, unemployment, housing, crumbling bridges, levies, potholes, health care, in short, this nation’s most precious commodity, its people and its future generations. This is not socialism; rather it’s a possession of true Americanism our Founders envisioned in order to form a more perfect union. Whether Barack’s race, were to have been White or Black, the part that is of the transformation is-- his vision is the embodiment of these tenets. America is going through a well needed and desired catharsis in order to form a more perfect union!

Yes, it is more remarkable for a Black Democratic candidate to be ahead for presidency in polls one week before Election Day. And, yes, even more remarkable than that is that it is happening today. However, more importantly it should be noted Black Democratic candidates have also run in the past. Notwithstanding, their efforts which laid the groundwork for social issues should not be minimized. Be that as it may, what is more salient is Obama is the transformational candidate as General Colin Powell succinctly stated.
To be able to by-pass partisan issues is what enables Obama to zoom towards being the President of United States of America and to become the leader of the free world is what has amazed me. When I listened to his speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, I thought Barack was crazy. But, Barack Obama distinguished himself then; despite my myopia. In retrospect I have a new point of view; and now realize why Obama’s presidency is so magnanimous. Apart from Obama’s race, American culture and politics are being addressed in the context of the social ills which have plagued our society since Reagan. There’s not a Native America, White America, Black America, Asian America, any longer America—there is the United States of America attested by Obama’s lead in the polls and his sincere speech in 2004 .
Let me be clear, it would be naive to assume class warfare doesn’t exist in America. The point is that an Obama presidency is greater than all of these elements. American have been duped into believing it’s unpatriotic or socialist to express their dismay at a time when we are experiencing our country erode socially and economically. Being color or of gay (I’m not gay), being an immigrant, being of any religion other than Christianity (especially Muslim), being of scientific belief, or having a woman’s right to control her body, is all tantamount to the intolerance the land of the free and home of the brave has devolved towards according to the neocons. Most Americans see the courage Obama has to tackle these social problems as well as the shrinking economic pie nationally and globally; as well as the world community, but they can’t vote.
There are the many transformations we as Americans want. Post-racially, what Obama has accomplished is “The American Dream” which my ancestors and Dr MLK Jr. articulated with his famous quote — “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”. That day is here and beseeches the appetite young people and progressive Americans have. This is why the GOP is finding it problematical to attract people antithetical to the American dream.

Go but Obama/Biden

God Bless Senators Byrd and Rockefeller and Governor Manchin.

Voters in West Virginia ---- listen to your leaders.   You will not be sorry.   The economy will NOT be better for you under McCain/Palin, because they do not care about you.

Get to the polls and make Senator Byrd a happy man.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08
How anyplace could not fall into the Obama column is beyond me. Here's a glimpse of what we've endured for the past 8 years. Do we really want more of it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8gJ_rPHXtk
Why would West Virginians want to back a LOSER like McCain ?

Why not back the winner ?

We've had ENOUGH of Republican economic policies
We've had ENOUGH of Republican foreign policy

McCain has ALWAYS been an under-achieving womanizer
Is THAT what you want for President ?
Haven;t we just had 8 years of an under-acuieving womanizer ?

VOTE Obama/Biden '08!
WEST VA VOTERS: Follow Mr. Bryd's lead... put aside those prejudices and votE OBAMA/BIDEN ON 4 NOV!!!

A RABID REPUBLICAN VIETNAM-ERA VET FAT OLD PREJUDICED WHITE GUY NOW FOR OBAMA/BIDEN
West Va. should support Sen. Obama.  Everything he proposes and stands for are in concert with the needs of 99% of West Virginians.

It's sad that they get tagged as uneducated and therefore the bulk of ads that reach them are the most negative, hateful and divisive.  McCain/palin will concentrate the worst (most deceitful) of their attacks there as a result.

Help yourself this time W. Va.  Vote Obama/Biden

it was a wonderful speech to watch!  Byrd has so much emotion and so much passion.  GOBAMA!!
Could West Virginia be falling for Obama-Biden as well?

While an enticing thought, the answer is a resounding, NO!

It is heart warming to see a Senator like Byrd, who has seen our country transform from Separate, but Equal to the possibility of an African American becoming the next POTUS!

Oh, what a country; oh, what a candidate to lead this country!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08
If Obama does lose he can for sure blame Biden...what a bumbling dork...honestly he misspeaks (or atleast claims to misspeak) more than anyone I have ever heard of.

Obama should have just picked his wife to be VP, atleast he wouldn't lose votes because of "slip ups"

He actually asked a guy confined to a wheel chair to stand up....I mean come on....

I can be hopeful...McCain 08 / Palin 12
as a democrat, it gives me great pride in true american statesman we have seen in our lifetime like sen. byrd and sen. ted kennedy. they have served our country and it's citizens well!
I still haven't forgiven Byrd for not delivering West Virginia to Gore in 2000.  Now it's time for him to make amends and get those votes back so Barack can win in a landslide!
Lol it looks like the republican have over played their hand. They tried to devide this country along race and it looks like WV is not going to fall for their crap! Lets go WV and win the state for Obama

AMAZING!!!!! Still not a peep from this network about the Obama campaign silencing the media in FL or the audio tapes of Obama talking about wealth redistribution to a radio station in 2001. I guess the public doesn't need to know about that when they make their decision.
Sarah Palin addresses the $150,000 in clothing purchased for her by the Republican National Committee at a rally. She compares the outfits to the lighting at an event, saying it doesn't belong to her and that she will go back to shopping at her "favorite consignment store" once the race is over. She went on to highlight some of her inexpensive accessories.

Back to Nordstom's and Macy's for Simple Little Sarah

She'll donate her 'borrowed clothes' to a Homeless Shelter

It was all just a 'clothing malfunction' for Simple Sarah

Thank god it didn't happen during a Super Bowl

Maybe her 'witch doctor' can make her some new clothes out o a witch's broom

Back to being Jolene Sixpack for Simple Sarah

Talking of VP choices for the tickets - didn't Sen. McCain clinch his nomination back in March, and had all that time to properly vet and make a VP choice?

It can't be emphasized enough how Sen McCain displayed such poor judgement in his choice of a running mate. BTW, I'm no fan of Sarah Palin, but for the McCain campaign to be pointing fingers at her at this point is ridiculous. They had plenty of time to pick a qualified candidate. Sen McCain chose instead to tactically wait for Sen. Obama to pick first. Oh was that a strategic decision? Sometimes I don't know the difference - ha ha!

Thank you Sen. McCain for all the help you've given us!

Obama/Biden '08
I like you guys, but ...

"It appears voters are becoming more pragmatic as America's economic outlook worsens."
--Does that mean MSNBC does not think it pragmatic to vote Republican?  I understand what is trying to be said, but it was written poorly.
On meet the press Sunday, John McCain said that
Sarah @ Todd Palin are not wealthy?  they reported
income last year of $175,000 last year, seem well off
to me.
Not holding my breath over racist West Virginia; we can reach 270 with or without them at this point. McCain can HAVE West Virginia.....fits right in with the nasty campaign they've run anyhow. Send Hasselbeck to West Virginia....seems like she'd fit right in!             Obama/Biden '08/'12
I'm sorry-I have no respect or regard for anything that comes from a former Klansman.

In this election cycle, we are faced with a choice, not just for president, but for who we are as people.

If you learn that your neighbor makes more money than you do, do you feel entitled to bang on his door and demand that he fork over the difference in your wages?

Of course not-but it seems that many people feel less squeamish about having the government do it.  What makes you feel so entitled to other people's earnings?

Last week, a poster stated that his eight hours of labor should be worth no less than anyone else' eight hours.  Really?  Does he think that a bank teller's eight hours are worth the same as a neurosurgeon's?  There are many office workers who earn less per hour than trash collectors; does he think that those wages should be equalized?  If he does, he will have to explain where trash collectors will come from, because it is an onerous job that only attracts workers because of the high pay.  Maybe he thinks that the janitors should earn the same wage as the teachers, or that astronauts and grocery store clerks should be paid equal wages.

That system worked out real well for the Soviet Union.

I think it's time for a little honesty.  If you are jealous of what your neighbor earns, say so.  If you demand that he pay you the difference, you are a thief, even if you 'allow' the government to do the stealing for you.

Look yourself in the eye in the mirror, tell yourself it is okay to take what doesn't belong to you because someone else has what you don't, and then go vote for Obama.  For heaven's sake, stop lying to yourselves.
While Robert Byrd may be physically frail now he's still mentally sharper than "Alzheimer" McCain and "Sinister" Sarah put together.  I sure hope that West Virginians give Obama a victory in what was once predicted to be a big loss.  McNasty has done nothing to help the coal miners of West Virginia, he's only been for the greedy mine owners who have screwed the workers with unsafe working conditions and poor pay.

Time for West Virginia rednecks to show us they have enough smarts to know which candidate and which party really takes their interests to heart!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
If Obama wins in West Virginia, it will mean that he is winning in a landslide nationwide. One can hope!
Sarah Palin could learn a lot about the Constitution (and the duties and responsibilities of the VP) from Senator Byrd.  Unlike Palin, who likes to make it up as she goes along, Senator Byrd knows the Constitution and believes in the importance of adhering to what it says.  Palin comes from the Dick Cheney "it doesn't apply to me" school of government.  She doesn't have a clue.  She'd rather blather on and on about Joe the plummer or some other inane character created by her handlers.
>>>His [Byrd's] thinking has changed dramatically about matters of race. He has apologized for his past.
==========
If a political veteran of racial politics like Byrd can change his thinking on matters of race, surely this should inspire others to re-think their attitudes.  Sadly, there are still many (liberal and conservative) who are at best apprehensive about voting for an African-American for President.  This should provide fitting example of someone who's thinking has evolved over the course of time.  His support is admirable and speaks volumes about the changing attitudes of America.

Obama/Biden '08!

If the good people of WV don't listen to Senator Byrd, then nobody is going to convince them.

Obama/Biden '08
Sarah Palin "frugal"?  What about all of that free air travel for her and her family, staying in New York hotels for hundred's of dollars a night etc. etc.  It's not hard to be "frugal" when the taxpayers are picking up the bills.  Frugal to McCain and Palin means someone else is paying the tab.
McCain and his clown Tucker Bounds just liel this morning on MSNBC when they said Obama voted to increase taxes on “families” making as little as $42,000 per year. Fact check this please ppl its just lies…

I wish someone on the Republican ticket would get just ONE thing right without inventing half-truths or outright lies.

It doesn't matter if Palin wears her own clothes bought at her favorite thrift shop or wears the RNC designer supplied clothes, in the end she's still and empty suit.
I just want to say that there are a lot of white, middle class Democrats in WV (including my family, from my 85 year old grandmother to my 19 year old brother) who enthusiastically support Sen Obama.  And we sincerely hope that enough people will come out to support him to return WV to its great Democratic tradition.  I mean, come on WV, we voted for Dukakis!
The Obama/Biden team is paying huge salaries each week for make up for the boys from Oz,  Lion BO and Scarecrow Joe. Their dress costs will not be published, until after the election, and Michelle Obama’s expenses, if she paid for the outfits, it would make Sarah Palin look like the average American she truly is in a consignment store. Nobody really is interested in that at this point. Negative attacks against Sister Sarah to destroy her just like they did to Joe the Plumber in Ohio. Big Brother has finally arrived, and it’s not the show on CBS.
Did you see the Biden meltdown on WFTV in Orlando? He was asked a question about his statements on BO being tested and he went into meltdown. The Obama campaign has cancelled any further contact with WFTV Orlando to include a scheduled interview with Joe (Scarecrow) Biden’s wife. Questions about his own statements, made him mad, he even said, “I don’t know who’s writing your questions”. Hopefully American’s will see through this farce before it’s too late. Watch the clip on You Tube. You can actually see the lines on his forehead this time!

Great question. Were you better off two years ago before the Democrats took charge of the House and Senate after 2006? A real eye opener that puts blame where it belongs. Yes we were all better off before they took over. Can we get an Amen?
Just watched Obama's closing argument on cable.  It was inspirational (as are all of his speeches).  I am always proud to be an American; this is the only country in the world that has been founded on a set of ideals of which we can all be proud.  Yet, never more than now, have I been as proud of what we are about to achieve as a nation.  It's not that we should elect Barack because he is an African-American, it's that we as a nation have been able to look beyond our racist past and elect this once-in-a-lifetime leader in spite of his ethnicity.

This has the potential of being a time of great coming together for our nation and I feel priveleged to be alive in order to witness the monumental achievement of our people.  What could be more symbolic of all of this than Bobby Byrd enthusiastically giving a full throated endorsement of Barack Obama?  Truly, this is a blessed land; God bless America.

Yeah MSNBC...Don't be part of the cover-up - Report the news.   I want to hear about both stories.!!!!!!!
Come on West Virginia I know most of you make under 250,000 a year so vote for the candidate that would give you a tax break and give tax credits to businesses that would hire in the U.S (and he is not going to fine the ones that don't they just don't get tax credits).  McCain wants to keep the tax breaks for the rich and big business.  Don't fall for the McCain promises because they are 4 more of the same last 8 not matter how he tries to paint it (voted 90% of time with Bush).  Obama/Biden 08!!!!!!
The significance is not winning all of these Battlegrond and Red states. The significance is that Obama-Biden competed in them all, enlarging the playing field, pressing McCain to spend time and resources, and finally to show people that Barack really believes his "no red state, no blue state" rhetoric.

When is the last time that pols of either party visited ND or MT. When is the last time that the GOP's southern strategy looked like a loser? A chance in WV, IN and even in GA? Amazing, folks and this has the GOP sick to their stomachs as they didn't see it coming until it was too late!

"This is our time, This is our moment1" -Barack '08

No victory dances until sometime late 11/4 or early 11/5 when the results are really in!

Vote for Change!

Suggest FirstRead quote very moving passage in "the audacity of hope" describing Obama first meeting Byrd "officially" in Byrd's office, where Byrd refers indirectly to his past errors re: race.

Go, 'bama.
ALL Obama/Biden supporters, please remain calm but more importantly cast your vote. Polls are just polls and they are meaningless and CHANGE will not come if we don't cast our votes.

EVERY VOTE COUNTS! VOTE!VOTE! VOTE!
How's Obama Going to Raise $4.3 Trillion?"

by making the Iraqi's foot the bill in Iraq (10-12B) per month, by closing tax loopholes and shutting down programs that are broken and trimming the fat in programs that could run better.

How's McCain going to cover his education, economic plan while keeping us in Iraq and spending 10-12B per month?  How's he plan on going to alternative fuels while freezing spending across the board with the exception of VA bene's?  And I guess you believe him when he says he can balance the budget in his first term?

comical!!
I love Robert Byrd. God bless him.
Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money."  Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" button.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was practicing the Obama "spreading the wealth" concept. The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful!

The homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, --- "but the waiter was very angry" that I gave away the money he did earn.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

Barack Obama sounds like a bad mortgage rep. At the end of the day he is Over promising and Under delivering.
