The McCain campaign is jumping all over Biden's interview yesterday with a Scranton TV affiliate, in which Biden said that people making under $150,000 per year would get a tax cut under Obama's tax plan.

McCain even mentioned it during his speech today in Pennsylvania, noting all the different numbers Obama and his campaign are citing on the tax issue. “Sen. Obama has made a lot of promises," the Arizona senator said in remarks his campaign passed around to reporters. "First, he said people making less than 250,000 dollars would benefit from his plan. Then this weekend, he announced in an ad that if you're a family making less than 200,000 dollars you'll benefit. But yesterday, right here in Pennsylvania, Sen, Biden said tax relief should only go to 'middle class people -- people making under 150,000 dollars a year.' It's interesting how their definition of rich has a way of creeping down. At this rate, it won't be long before Senator Obama is right back to his vote that Americans making just 42,000 dollars a year should get a tax increase. We can't let that happen.”

Video: John McCain slams Barack Obama's plans to "spread the wealth," raise taxes and limit opportunities rather than create new wealth for Americans, and make everyone successful.

Biden aides say his comments were actually consistent with Obama's tax plan -- people under $150,000 get a cut, and people making up to $250,000 stay the same.

Indeed, here's what Obama said at the Saddleback forum in August: "What I can say is under the approach I'm taking, if you make $150,000 or less, you will see a tax cut. If you're making $250,000 a year or more, you're going to see a modest increase." ***CLARIFICATION *** The Obama campaign tells First Read that this is how Obama's plan breaks down: People making less than $250,000 will not see their taxes increase, and people making less than $200,000 will receive some type of tax cut. And all of this is essentially reflected in the Tax Policy Center stats below.

*** UPDATE *** An Obama aide points out to First Read that the $150,000 figure Biden was citing was simply an example of what someone making that amount would get under Obama's tax plan. Indeed, Biden's $150,000 remark came after he referred to someone making $1.4 million.

Per the Tax Policy Center, here is how Obama's tax plan breaks down for individuals:
$0-$18,891 = $567 tax cut
$18,982-$37,595 = $892 tax cut
$37,596-$66,354 = $1,118 tax cut
$66,355-$111,645 = $1,264 tax cut
$111,646-$160,972 = $2,135 tax cut
$160,973-$226,918 = $2,796 tax cut
$226,919-$603,402 = $121 tax increase
$603,403-$2.87 million = $93,709 tax increase
$2.87 million-plus = $542,882 tax increase

I still don't understand the whole issue over taxes. Why don't we just cut everyones taxes to zero and then we can pay for police and fire protection, road construction, national security, trash pick up, clean water, etc. all by ourselves. No problem ...Right?
I am so sick of the personal attacks, my candidate can't stay focused on what he is going to do and give me specifics about his plans...I am so sick of his poorly ran campaign. Who would have ever thought I would be saying this but I'm voting for Mr. Obama. This election has been such a disappointment.
by the numbers posted here, it is plain that McCain and Palin are LYING AGAIN!!!!

DON'T ELECT LIARS!  BUSH/CHENEY/MCCAIN/PALIN ALL ARE LIARS AND WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE OF THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE IN OFFICE.

sorry about the screaming, but i do feel alot better now...  ;)  it is time for the people who aren't doing well to get a fair shake in this country again, and contrary to what the right wants to tell me, i didn't start struggling in 2006, but back in 2002 when jobs evaporated, fuel prices began their climb, and the domino effect took hold on all the basic staples of life.  time for a bit of honesty in government, and to get all the career politicians into new jobs where they have to produce results to get paid...

OMFG!  This is actually the first time I've ever seen this breakdown.  You mean to tell me that you McCainiacs are 61tching over $121 FREAKIN DOLARS?!  GEEZ! YOU'RE MAKING CLOSE TO A QUARTER OF A MIL!  HOW FRAKIN' GREEDY CAN YOU GET?!

Obama/Biden '08!

It is foolish for McCain to jump on every comment.  The Obama team has been consistantly on message, anyone making less tahn $250K gets a tax cut. If you still didn't get it, go to there website and use their calculator to calculate your tax savings.   As someone solidly in the middle class - with three college tuitions to pay, I haven't gotten much from the Bush plan, and McCain doesn't even say the words "middle-class".
Thank you for posting the numbers.  This should have been out, big time, before now.  It would have helped Obama, and shut up McCain/Palin.
By now we all know that the McCain campaign is not capable of listening thoroughly, nor interested in hearing the truth of something Barack Obama or Joe Biden are saying, they are just out there like gone-wild deer in the headlights, trying to pick up anything to discredit Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
What a pathetic campaign!
Interesting article. So If "middle class america", those making 37596 to 66354 will receive only 1118 tax savings or 93.17 per month and higher income individuals at 160K to 226K get even a bigger break pf $2796 or 233 per month. Now why does the middle class suffer? The middle class can use $233 more than those earning over $160000. The numbers should be reversed. The higher tax cut to those earning less. So as President his taxes on his Presidential salary only increase $121. This is a bait and switch by the Obama party. He is still serving the higher income people in America and trying to hide it in his eloquent words.
McCain's campaign constantly taking things out of context, and then exploiting them, truly shows me how desperate their campaign really has become..McCain, you really don't have a plan to unite us do you? You really don't have an economic plan, do you? Because if you did, you would think that with a week to the election, you'd share it with the voters..But, all we hear is falsehoods, and misleading statements only serving to spread false information..Tell us your detailed plans Mr McCain, if you want my vote..
The more people speak the more the truth come out. These "mis-speaks" are starting to show the Dems true colors.  How many times do these two have to actually repeat something before we the voters stop listening to the spin and realise they are speaking the truth. If you continue to make comments that are socialist they cannot all be a misunderstanding.

Lets vote them all out of office....how can we vote for a Senator when we give the congress as a whole a 15% approval rating
It's interesting that McCain/Palin are still finding a voice in the race but Obama is pitching his closing remarks in the race.  Just tells you where the campaigns are right now.

Things are speeding up as the campaigns whine down and any of the candidates might say anything at this point because they've got so much going.  We all know Biden often makes mistakes but we do trust that his heart is in the right place.

McCain shares the Bush/Republican philosophies that believe wealth should trickled down so I don't buy anything he says at this point because I know he's simply trying to win or get everyones attention
McCain needs to read "Tax Policy for Dummies" by Joe Biden.

The McCain "TAX" argument is a joke. As Obama said yesterday in his closing arguments, it doesn't matter how many times McCain says there will be a tax increase with the Obama plan irrespective of income, that doesn't make it truth. McCain is a liar!

If someone making between $226K and $603K gets a tax increase of $121.00 I don't give a da__ if they are upset right now! Afterall, millions of people would love to be in that tax bracket and gladly pay the increase. Only in America has greed so consumed people that they would whine about paying $121.00 more in taxes so that middle class workers might get a little relief.

McCain and that "welfare" line is just a scare tactic and another lie.

The right is so hateful and delusional that they are now blaming Obama for the volatility in the stock market i.e his tax plan discourages people from investing in companies that may have an increased tax burden. If those companies did well under Clinton then they will do well under Obama. What a bunch of greedy, shameless non-patriots!
John McCain you just like Joe

This country does not need a John McCain who get's dazed, confused, and lead off stage.

BUT IT'S BIGGER THAN THAT:
factcheck.org nd politifact.org have debunked this lie over and over.

Vote Obama/Biden

We normal Americans will MOST be better off with Obama's plan.

Now thats a Oxy moron for ya !
Um, all the Obama posters seem to think he promised tax cuts to those making under $250,000.  In fact, I do believe that I have heard him say it himself numerous times, and I also recall reading it on his website.

We'll be at $42,000 any day now.  REmember the Clinton middle class tax cut?

However, I expect to read outraged posts from Obama land insisting that they never said the income level was $250,000; they understood it from the beginning; those who think this is a 'change' are haters and racists; the sky is green, the grass is blue. . .

Actually, if you've been paying attention, and actually read somehting on his website it states that about 95% of people making under $250,000.00 a year will see a tax break! Follow? So people making between $226,919-$250,000 will see a modest tax increase of $121.00! Whoa! They might have to skip one 3 drink lunch at the club every month! Poor soul!
I was a little worried about the philosophy of growth from the bottom up until the brillant post from FirstRead.

$0-$18,891 = $567 tax cut
$18,982-$37,595 = $892 tax cut
$37,596-$66,354 = $1,118 tax cut
$66,355-$111,645 = $1,264 tax cut
$111,646-$160,972 = $2,135 tax cut
$160,973-$226,918 = $2,796 tax cut
$226,919-$603,402 = $121 tax increase
$603,403-$2.87 million = $93,709 tax increase
$2.87 million-plus = $542,882 tax increase

This is NOT "redistribution of wealth" else it would look something like this:

$0-$18,891 = $542,882 tax cut
$18,982-$37,595 = $93,709 tax cut
$37,596-$66,354 = $1,118 tax cut
$66,355-$111,645 = $121 tax cut
$111,646-$160,972 = $96 tax cut
$160,973-$226,918 = $82 tax cut
$226,919-$603,402 = $121 tax increase
$603,403-$2.87 million = $93,709 tax increase
$2.87 million-plus = $542,882 tax increase

Finally, a clear and consise analysis of the Middle Class Tax Cut Obama is proposing. America has more than 75% of Americans in the middle class. This focuses growth on the largest share of the GDP, the MIDDLE CLASS. This is not Class Warfare! Do not listen to McCain. He is more of the same...
As with all promised tax cuts by candidates, I'll believe it when I see it in my bank account.  Don't get too excited yet. Neither candidate has actually submitted a budget for the country and therefore, in my opinion, has any idea what they are talking about. As usual, promise they will promise you whatever you want to hear. If your plans hinge on what the two candidates are telling you, you'll be disappointed when they take office.
Well my family will not get a tax cut with Obama but we arleady voted for him. We need a strong middle class, we had enough of average americans stuggling every day. I can not wait for McCain to go back to Arizona and Palin back to Alaska. By the way why McCain does not want to meet with the Prime Minister of Spain???????
Let me see if I understand the logic.  If you support the idea that high earners should pay 36% in income tax, you are a socialist, Marxist, or communist.  If you support the idea that high earners should pay 33% in income tax, you are Pro American.  I did not realize the difference was so small.
news flash......$150,000 is NOT middle class people!!! i make $56,000 and need a tax break!!! OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!
