Obama mocks 'socialism' attack

Posted: Wednesday, October 29, 2008 2:30 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

RALEIGH, N.C. -- At a rally here, Obama mocked his rival for linking his plan to end tax breaks for wealthy Americans and provide more tax relief for the middle class to “socialism."

“Because [McCain] knows that his economic theories don’t work, he’s spending these last few days calling me every name in the book,” Obama said, referring to McCain’s "socialist" charge. “I don’t know what’s next. By the end of the week, he’ll be accusing me of being a secret communist because I shared my toys in kindergarten. I shared my, uh, peanut butter and jelly sandwich.”

Video: Speaking in North Carolina, Barack Obama says John McCain is echoing George Bush's economic policies of tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations, and the privatization of social security.

The McCain campaign, which has consistently sought to paint Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal in ads and on the stump, sent out its own quip in response. “No one cares what Barack Obama does with his toys, but Americans do care that he wants to raise taxes, add a trillion dollars in new spending and redistribute your hard-earned paycheck as he sees fit,” said spokesman Tucker Bounds.

In his speech today, Obama also sharpened his argument that he better understands the concerns of the middle class by employing a tool -- both literally and rhetorically -- that John McCain’s campaign has taken up on the trail in recent weeks: Joe the Plumber.

“Whether you are Susie the Student or Nancy the Nurse, Tina the Teacher, or Carl the Construction Worker -- if my opponent is elected, you will be worse off four years from now than you are today,” he said. “Let’s cut through the negative ads and the phony attacks. Under John McCain, the middle class will watch wealth get favored over work, jobs get shipped overseas, the health care costs and college costs continue to go through the roof. North Carolina, we know that just won’t do. Not this time.”

The visit to Wake County, which George Bush won in the last two elections, marked the Democratic nominee’s third trip to this red state this month alone. His campaign has made a point of encouraging early voting in states where it is possible. North Carolina’s Board of Elections data show registered Democrats in the state outnumbered registered Republicans 2,842,234 to 1,992,361 as of today. Campaign data shows Democrats here are voting early at a higher rate than Republicans and at a higher rate than they did in the last election.

Today, Obama encouraged the 28,000 people who turned out to hear him speak to join a walk to early voting sites that was scheduled to take place after the event. He also told people they could register and vote today. And he tried to make sure his supporters were not confused by the state’s ballot.

“This is important: When you do vote, you have to vote in two steps -- one for president, and one for the rest of the ticket,” he explained. “If you vote for a straight ticket, you have not voted in the presidential election. You need to vote for president separately.”

Obama has a busy day ahead of him. He’ll campaign with Joe Biden in Sunrise, FL this afternoon and later with Bill Clinton in Kissimmee, FL, near Orlando. His 30-minute infomercial and an interview with The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart also air tonight.

During this speech, Obama invoked Bill Clinton in talking about the economy, reminding the audience that incomes rose under the former president and saying he would have similar economic policies, while McCain would follow Bush policies that caused incomes to fall.

A funny moment came when Obama made a mistake in referencing a popular 1970s sitcom as he spoke about Social Security. He cited "Sanford and Son," but then said “I’m coming, Weezy,” a reference to "The Jeffersons."

McCain has become a complete embarrassment. He should quit the Senate & get a right-wing jon with Fox News.He has no viable plans, just scare tactics. Not this time...crooked shooting Mac.
If McCain and his boomer generation supporters are so against the redistribution of wealth, as they call it, then I'm sure they won't mind if we just cancel social security and medicaid right now.

There isn't a larger redistribution of wealth in this country than the payout of benefits to retirees from the paychecks of today's workers.  By all means, cancel your retirements and we'll keep the check and invest it in our 401ks.

Yes I am being heavily sarcastic, but McCain's cries of socialism when he has lived on the government payroll since he left his mum's home is a joke.
Joe the Plumber has officially endorsed McCain.  Where would the GOP be today if not for the vote of middle class white guys who vote against their own self interest?  A rhetorical question, obviously.
Obama is the new promising light this nation needs at a time we're buried in crisis overseas and at home.  He has an opportunity to bring america together.  Hopefully he will take over the presidency and run a centrist agenda.  I think by doing that, he keeps the democrats strong for years to come and rips the republican party (as we know it today) to shreds.
He cited "Sanford and Son," but then said “I’m coming, Weezy,” a reference to "The Jeffersons."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Actually he was still citing Sanford and Son, he just conflated the name: it's "I'm coming Elizabeth!" He was probably thinking about The Jeffersons because, like them, he's movin on up - all the way to the White House baby!
Last night on the "Colbert Report," Steven interviewed 2008 U.S. Presidential candidate Brian Moore, who is actually running for the Socialist Party.

The guy was asked flat-out whether Barack Obama is a socialist, and the guy was darn near offended.  He said, "Barack Obama is a capitalist" and almost seemed peeved that someone else had stolen his thunder, as erroneous as the claims against Obama have turned out to be.
The Republican strategists like to stick labels on people. When they use their favorite label, "liberal," they need to remember that the most liberal of all is Jesus.

Some of the labels that have circulated in these parts I can't repeat.

Hopefully a day will come when we put labels aside.

Palin is a pure socialist - she taxes the oil companies in Alaska and distributes that money directly to the people of that state in tax rebate checks.

McCain is a socialist by allowing the feds to partially nationalize the banks and provide corporate welfare to big business.

Obama is a progressive - he's keeping the middle class strong, because without us, the rich fat cats with their businesses would go under.

Obama is right, McCain is wrong.
Maybe Tucker Bounds can get a job cleaning toilets after they lose next Tuesday. This guy certainly can't run a campaign and should NEVER ever be a spokesperson, again. He's a moron; much like most of McCain's staff come to think of it. It's almost over, folks, just a few more days!    Obama/Biden '08/'12!
Actually, the Sanford and Son show did have the quote "I'm coming home, Elizabeth," said by Redd Foxx to his late wife.  So Obama had the first name wrong, but the quote in the right show.
Oh, and one more thing - Obama could also quote another classic tv show in response to McCain accusing him of being a socialist, with:

"What you talk'n 'bout McCain!?!?"
If John Mccain lived in a village of idiots, he would be the Village Idiot.

Keep repeating the lies - nobody is listening to you.
A funny moment came when Obama made a mistake in referencing a popular 1970s sitcom as he spoke about Social Security. He cited "Sanford and Son," but then said “I’m coming, Weezy,” a reference to "The Jeffersons."

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds responds:  "Once again, our opponent played the race card, referring to black TV shows that he knows Republicans have never watched in their lives.  John McCain is counting on the loyal viewers of "Eight is Enough" and "The Waltons" to swing this election in his favor."
You might spare us the scintillating wit of Tucker Bounds.  We've already heard his pack of lies ad nauseam.
He himself may not be a socialist, but his policies are very in tune with the core socialistic policies in which America is completely against.
In prior posts to other articles, we've seen the return of the blogger of mental patient DAVE ANDERS TX...what's next, the return of Jerry from Corpus Christi, Tx?  Looks like McCain's minions are coming out of the wood work for one last lie-fest.
On the McLauglin Group, last week (2 weeks ago?)they asked if Obama was a Socialist or a Marxist

Thankfully, Pat Buchanan admitted Obama was not a communist (!?)

All because Obama wants to remove the tax giveaway to the usper rich that McCain INITIALLY OPPOSED !!

Originally, McCain opposed Bush's tax cut, calling it 'irresponsible'

In a time of war, it WAS irresponsible
It amounted to 'Redistributing' income from the middle and working classes to the Super Rich

Socialism for the Rich

How do repugs like Tucker Bounds get by with constantly saying Obama plans to raise taxes?  He plans to CUT taxes for ALL working class Americans!  The spinelss media have a responsibility to call these guys on this lie.  It's the old Rove strategy: say it loud enough and often enough and Joe Six Pack and his low-information bretheren will believe it.
Senator Obama is going to make a great President - he is the real deal.

Regardless of how this election turns out, the real winner is America, because Senator Obama has reminded us of what is possible.

WE THE PEOPLE can change our government.

It is a lesson I will never forget.

Obama/Biden '08/'12

P.S. There are some quiet murmurs here in Tennessee . . . perhaps there is another red state that may be within Senator Obama's reach . . . hmmmmmm. :)
McCain has no clue . . . he thinks calling Obama scary names will make me want to support his giving even MORE money to the filthy-rich and big corporations that have already been stealing from the country for the last 8 years???

Not this year, Johnny Mac . . . America has figured-out your and the Republican's game . . .
Vote for McPain if you must but will you also please go fight in his wars and pay his bills too? Something the Republican faithfull aren't good at you know..paying their war bills or fighting either...not in vietnam and not now...more like the non bill paying chickenhawk party
McCain really is just an old man yelling at clouds. Sarah Palin should aspire to such heights.

When did the national dream become concentrating all the wealth into the top .02% (who own something like 40% of the wealth)?  Pay some taxes, Bitches!
My article this morning, which was published on the front page of Republican website Realclearpolitics.com, outlined this very line of attack for Obama. Point out what a similar approach by Clinton did for the working class in the 1990s - and what it can do again moving forward.

Please read my article at:

Sarah Palin is accusing Barack Obama of advocating socialism when she literally used that word to describe the collective wealth sharing in her home state of Alaska.Kinda like McCain saying Obama palying with terriorist and McCain calls G Gordon Liddy a friend and goes on his show..Sara Palin is a Whack Job and McCain is seems to be in the first stage of Alzheimer’s disease.

Christianity in its purest form, not as practiced by neo-cons and the religous right, is socialism.  The happiest people in the world are the Danes and Denmark is a socialist nation. The happiest people in the world pay some of the highest taxes in the world 50% to 70% of their incomes. In exchange, the government covers all health care and education, and spends more on children and the elderly than any country in the world per capita.

If Congress was really doing their job and be in full compliance with Article I, Section Eight, Clause One of the Contitution of the United States of America, we would be just as happy.

Anyone who has not read the Constitution and fully comprehends what it means, shame on you.  The Constitution itself, is a socialist document.  Anyone who is against true socialist, just maybe bit of a traitor.

The McCain campaign has become some sick combination of a tent revival and a carnival.
Isn't it Tucker's naptime or something?
Obama still acts like he's in Kindergarten, maybe that's why he used the reference, but he's not going to share toys, he's going to share your taxes with those who don't pay any. He's sending the wrong signal by telling people that if they work hard and earn enough money they can help others, involuntarily. I should be able to decide what charities I want to give my money to, that's not gov'ts decision. Why work harder when you can earn the same amount of money as the next guy. All you have to do is just wait for Obama to send you a check.
I'm so sick of that tired old line "tax-and-spend liberal" Repubs use to describe Dems. After what the Repubs have done to the economy over the last 8 years, they have no credibility whatsoever in that realm. Heck, even Greenspan acknowledges the deregulation ideals from the Reagan years are what got us into our current economic state.
Doesn't Obama realize that peanut butter can be a deadly allergen? Talk about starting terrorism at a young age!

I kid, I kid!
Obama the Orator who does not know anything but to mock like a bully in grade kindergarter
Obama the Orator who knows nothing but to mock others
Republicans everywhere are losing their minds. This insanity has been reflected in their attack ads.

I'm going pray for Barack Obama and a fillibuster-proof Senate. Oh yeah.
I thought you blue state people were leaving us? Was that letter going around just a joke? The world hates us, but what they know about us mostly comes from LA, NY, and DC. That's blue country according to you. Please take your chaff from our states. We can't afford anymore more wheat to protect you.
If Obama wins, we will go down the road toward socialisim...  If he loses we will have a race war...  Damned if we do, and damned if we don't!!!
Of course he's not pleased being called a socialist.  Any marxist would!
Does this guy have any long time political alliances who are not anti-American haters, terrorists or flat out communists?

Anyone?
The only thing we have not heard out of the McCain/Palin mouth is "Read my Lips".
Why is Obama in denial to what he is? Every part of his populist message, he's redistribution schemes, his tax the rich give to the poor ideas, about the government controlling more and more of our lives, is all about socialism. Why liberals like Obama, and many on this board appear to do the same, deny that there is socialists is beyond explanation.
McCain can't even come back with a funny comment! This guy sucks...
