McCain vs. Obama: Your partisan divide

Posted: Thursday, October 30, 2008 9:24 AM by Carrie Dann

The New York Times’ Leibovich notes the differences between rallies for McCain-Palin and Obama. “Supporters of Senators Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr. often look like Benetton-colored billboards, decked out for their candidates in Obama-Biden hats, T-shirts and buttons. Supporters of Senator John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin like logo merchandise, too, but tend more toward pompoms (yes, pompoms), homemade signs (‘Pitbulls 4 Freedom’), flag pins and chest paint. There is more dancing at Democratic rallies, more shouting out at Republican ones. They chant ‘Yes, we can’ (or ‘Sí, se puede’) at Obama and Biden rallies, ‘U.S.A.’ and ‘Drill, baby, drill’ at McCain and Palin rallies; the D’s bounce to blaring folk-rock and Motown (Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder) and the R’s counter with country-pop (including Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’) and arena rock (AC/DC).”

Leibovich adds, “Democratic rallygoers seem more worried about Ms. Palin than about Mr. McCain. They speak of feeling weary of ‘the politics of fear’ and claim Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin are ‘irrelevant’ — unless they win, as one supporter in Charleston, W.Va., said with a smile-cringe. When you ask Republicans what they think of Mr. Obama, the word ‘socialist’ comes up more often than not. They mention that he is a smooth talker, and not in a good way. A lot of them seem to have real problems with Michelle Obama, too, though they cannot pinpoint why. And they do not much care for that Joe Biden, either, or whatever his name is — many cannot immediately summon it.”

Politico says it would be a mistake for the McCain campaign to bank on grabbing a lion’s share of the undecided vote to close the gap. “The pool of undecided voters on Election Day could be as large as one in 10, but John McCain can hardly rely on them to overtake Barack Obama. According to past election results, undecided voters are unlikely to break decisively for either candidate and dramatically alter Tuesday’s race. In the past eight presidential contests, voters who made up their minds during the last week of the campaign never went for either ticket by large margins of 3-2 or 2-1, which potentially could tip the scales. ‘There is likely no hidden life raft in the undecided vote for John McCain,’ said Andy Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center.”

The Boston Globe on the war over the airwaves. "An unprecedented $64 million worth of television ads in just the final week of the race will put an exclamation point on the most expensive presidential campaign in history…. McCain, bolstered by about $18 million in late spending by the Republican National Committee, will hold his own against Democrat Barack Obama on the airwaves in the closing days. But over the course of the long campaign, the Obama operation will have spent more than $100 million more than McCain and the RNC on TV ads, according to data compiled for the Obama campaign and reviewed by the Globe."

"McCain says racism will play virtually no role when voters head to the polls next Tuesday because it will be trumped by the nation's economic problems. ... Referring to people who might vote against Democrat Barack Obama because he is black, McCain added: 'It would be a tiny, tiny, minority. Because people are hurting too much now. I mean, they're worried about staying in their homes, keeping their jobs.'"

Interesting the Slimes writes out Joe the Idiots full name, Joseph R. Biden Jr, while not filling in the blanks of Barack Hussein Obama name. I'm surprised the Times just didn't editorialize in Sarah "The Witch" Palin and John "The Old Guy" McCain.
With Obama, it's all about having a party, and it's all about him. We might as well have the American Idol winner be president, they'd probably do a better job then Party Boy Obama would ever do. I didn't realize America was looking for their own Princess Di. With Obama, now they have that. I hope he fills the big gap those people have in their retched little lives.
I've been to Obama rallies here in Vegas, and the energy is unbelievable!!!!!!!!!  And there were more white people than others.  I am so proud to be an American when I attend these rallies.  The Hope is awesome.  Here in Vegas we started voting on the 18th.  I hope we turn this state blue!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama/Biden 08/12
While the racists are out there, I think that McCain might actually be correct on this one.  Some folks may not vote for Obama based on the color of his skin -- but I think most Americans, if they actually look at the issues, will get past that pettiness and vote their pocketbook.

Maybe I'm an optimist.  I certainly HOPE that's what most Americans will do...

While Obama fans engage in a frenzy of hope the McNasty fanatics are whipped into a frenzy of hate.  We need a lot less hate in our divided country and it's never going to come from the evangelical christian lunatic fringe who go against their lying bible and perpetrate hate instead of hope.

We need less Joe the Plumbers who are only taking advantage of this election to get themselves record deals when they stink at singing or book deals when they have nothing to say.  Money first, country last.  Joe the Plumber ought to go to prison until he pays his taxes that he's been a deadbeat paying.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
People cannot "summon" good reasons or reasonable explinations as to why they do not support Obama because they are easily duped into the LIE that is the McCain campaign. To these low infomation voters, most of whom are uneducated to begin with, Obama is the "boogyman."  The truth is...these people will be the first ones bitching and moaning when things go bad for them IF McCain wins.
AC/DC? Really? Australian heavy rock? Couldn't they find any American rockers for McCain?

I guess it's fair – and appropriate – enough, as long as they're playing "Highway to Hell" as the McCain theme.
This goes out to the Veteran who's for Obama....

67 year old white male, Veteran of Vietnam (2 tours) 8 years in the United States Marine Corps, Retired Chicago Firemen after 33 years, Retired down to Florida living the good life...and I'm for McCain!!
It's time for the partisan healing to begin after this election. I urge my fellow Americans, especially Democrats, liberals, moderates, and independents, to watch Pat Buchanan's and Sean Hannity's faces when they announce Obama as the winner of this election on Nov 4th.

Remember: There is no red or blue America; there's only ONE AMERICA. Peace to all!!!

The ultimate Rope A Dope, not since Ali did it, happens in 5 days. Don't act like you didn't expect this, and you know what I am talking about.
Another difference in the campaign is that Barack Obama/Joe Biden have talked about hope, the future
of America, and plans for this future.
Mccain/palin have campaigned on lies, distortions,
hate, fear. division of our country and spoon fed
the radicals.
We do not need or can we survive any more
republican leadership. Too bad we can't throw
them all out the 5th.
Yes McCain continues to divide and is doing nothing more now than causing crazy dissention and confusion with the Republican party. After years and years of rule in Washington, the chickens are finally coming home to roost.

I'm not the least bit afraid of a totally Democratic Washington come January, 2009.  They can't possibly do anymore damage to this country than Bush and his buddies have done over the last 8 years. Between the economy, two wars with casualities upwards of 4500, our standing in the world, and so much more, we've got to get totally rid of the Republicans and start fresh.  Yes, America needs an enigma to get rid of the divisive, greedy, selfishness of the right and in just 5 days, we'll have it. Enough with them. They had their chance and gave America nothing but scandals and debt.

There is no way America should consider voting for McCain - who as the days go by, his campaign gets sloppier and sloppier. Palin is a ditz opportunist just like Joe the unlicensed plumber. They can all get raked up and shipped out with the rest of the Republican garbage!

Obama-Biden '08! AND THANK GOD!!!!!!!
When I heard Dolly's 9 to 5 playing at a Palin rally the other day....I almost cringed!  Come on now....doesn't Palin know the VP job is not going to be a 9 to 5 job!
MCBUSH/CARIBOU BARBIE ARE BRINGING OUT THE WORST IN FOLKS.
VOTE FOR A PRESIDENT SMARTER THAN YOU OR ME NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE A REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT.

VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN NOW IF YOU CAN or on 4 NOV!!! I ALREADY HAVE.

A RABID REPUBLICAN, VIETNAM-ERA VET, FAT, OLD, PREJUDICED WHITE GUY NOW FOR OBAMA/BIDEN
The Obama infommercial was another example of the Obama rhetoric-All talk and no substance.
Obama's razor thin qualifications do not make him ready to be president-maybe some day but not today.

Also, is anyone alarmed that Obama is reported to be spending $250,000,000 in the last 4 monmths of the campaign.  Why doesn't he set up a foundation to get chidren free medical coverage  That would be a different kind of politics which Obama is not.  He is buying the election.

Anne, PA

I ma disgusted witgh bith aciddates, but if you want good jugmnet, prudemnet fiscal policy and proven leadership, McCain's the one.
"I can't look out for the upper-, middle- and lower-class.  That's too much to focus on.  I'll just look out for the upper-class.  They're a better brand of people, anyway." - John McCain
That's the danger behind GOP ugliness. A bunch of the folks who for whatever reason still believe the crap spewing from GOP talking points will actually believe Obama is a socialist.

And it only takes one to pull a trigger.

In all honesty, its the GOP that has taken an unfortunate un-American turn in recent years. Its the GOP that brought us the debate over torture. Its the GOP that fires up its base with accusations of their opponents' lack of patriotism, etc. Its the GOP that constantly resorts to fear.

All of this strikes me as blatantly un-American.
McCain's rallies look more like mobs getting ready for a good old fashioned lynching!
