From NBC's Mark Murray
In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, which will air in part on Nightly News tonight at 6:30 pm ET, Obama says that the current economic crisis is going to make the next president's job much more difficult. Obama also talks about the Supreme Court and his judicial philosophy.

WILLIAMS: Has the job of president-elect, whether you or John McCain, changed right now this year because of what we're going through?

OBAMA: Yes. It's gonna be a lot tougher. I don't think there's any doubt about that. We -- we know that the next president is likely to inherit a significant recession. We don't know yet how long and how deep it is and what actions we take over the next six to nine months could help determine how deep and how long.

But what that also means is that there's gonna be less revenue coming in because businesses aren't making as much money. It means that unemployment is gonna be higher. There's gonna be greater demands on social services. It means that, you know, dealing with our short-term deficit and our long-term debt is gonna be more difficult.

So there's no doubt that we are gonna have to spend a lot of time, whoever the next president is, focused on making sure that the financial rescue plan actually works the way it's supposed to, that it shores up our housing market, the taxpayers are protected and getting their money back, that it's not being used to enrich corporate CEOs.

The Supreme Court
WILLIAMS: Senator, a question about the Supreme Court. Everyone running for President always says, especially on the narrow issue of abortion rights -- no litmus test. It's said on both sides of the issue. And if that's true, if you're not going to call a future Justice into the Oval Office, if you're successful in this endeavor and bring up the subject, how then do you also avoid surprises? I don't think George H.W. Bush, 41, ever dreamed that in Justice Souter he was appointed a dependable liberal vote.

OBAMA: Right.

BRIAN WILLIAMS: And as -- Eisenhower for years called Justice Brennan, his biggest mistake in office. Two surprises that just come to mind.

OBAMA: Right. Well, look, I think that you -- what you can ask a judge is about their judicial philosophy. And as somebody who taught constitutional law for ten years, who actually knows a lot of the potential candidates for Supreme Court on the right as well as on the left 'cause I've taught with them or interacted with them in some way -- I can tell you that how a Justice approaches their job, how they describe the path of interpreting the Constitution, I think can tell you a lot.

And so my criteria, for example, would be -- if a Justice tells me that they only believe the strict letter of the Constitution -- that means that they possibly don't mean -- believe in -- a right to privacy that may not be perfectly enumerated in the Constitution but, you know, that I think is there.

I mean, the right to marry who you please isn't in the Constitution. But I think all of us assume that if a state decided to pass a law saying, 'Brian, you can't marry the woman you love,' that you'd think that was unconstitutional. Well, where does that come from? I think it comes from a right to privacy. That may not be listed in the Constitution but is implied by the structure of the Constitution.

So I can have that conversation with a judge. Now if it was a conservative who was listening to me right then says, 'See? You know, he wants to allow the Court to legislate.' Ninety-nine percent of cases the Constitution is actually gonna be clear. Ninety-nine percent of the cases are statutes or congressional intent is gonna be clear. But there are gonna be one percent, less than one percent of real hard cases.

WILLIAMS: Second Amendment last term.

OBAMA: Second Amendment last term is a great example, where the language of the Second Amendment is not perfectly clear. I believe that the Second Amendment is actually an individual right. I think that's the better interpretation. You can make the other argument. And so I can have those kinds of discussions with a Justice without getting into the particulars of -- is Roe versus Wade, as currently outlined, exactly what you believe? Or do you believe that the DC gun law should have been overturned? And I think Sen. McCain, if ends up being the nominee [sic], could have those same conversations as well.

Obama is so intelligent and talented.  He deserves to be in the white house.  Everyone - please get out and vote!  Especially if you're an Obama supporter.
What a rare combination you have in Obama, the political street smarts, combined with incredible book smarts.

I hope Brian told Barack how much he loves him and that he's pulling for him on Tuesday.
I saw this! It's nice to see that Brian addressed Barack Obama using the correct protocol, kneeling before The One and kissing His ring.
All Obama all the time!!! Right now we're looking into the ideology of an Obama Presidency.
Barack Obama thinks the 2nd amendment is an "individual right"? What an outright lie. He sure hasn't voted that way. He supported a total gun ban in Chicago, the murder captial of the United States. He didn't show much consideration for anyones "individual rights" with those votes.
Obama is smart and really gets it. He will do a good job of picking not only Supreme court justices, but his entire cabinet. He has shown an ability to pick the best and the brightest, and he isn't looking for people that only agree with him.

Think about McCain . . . The most important decision he has ever made was his VP running mate. The vast majority of Americans agree that he made a big mistake. If he is as skillful at picking his cabinet and any future supreme court justices to fill vacancies, I think we can count on some big surprises after the fact!
Barack, Bush II inherited a "Significant recession", and then he had to deal with Clintons follie of ignoring terrorism for 8 years on 9/11. What Bush did is called hard work Obama. Something you've never done in your life. And no, it wouldn't be as hard as what Bush did.
Raising taxes is always a good way to get out of a recession. That is, if you want to go into a depression.
Man I'm sick of Nobama! MCCAIN WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO BETTER THAN NOBAMA TO FIX THE ECONOMY OTHER THAN CUT TAXES. HURRY UP AND TELL US, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANT TRUE HOPE AND CHANGE!!!!
Well, finally, an honest statement from Obama on something-he wants justices who legislate from the bench.  Not that I couldn't figure that our for my self, but I'm finally seeing something different from him-a clar answer to a question.

Notice the polls changing?  The common refrain that 'some tightening' is expected is getting old.  Nine points in one day is a lot more than tightening-it's a sign that something is wrong with the polls, be it weighting, sampling, or something else.

I believe that there is some shifting, however, and it is because people are finally starting to imagine what an Obama presidency would mean.  I also think that the LA Times is helping McCain by withholding that videotape of Obama at the Khalidi bash-Israel fest.  People can only imagine the damage it would do to Obama's candidacy, so they imagine the worst.  Way to go Mainstream Media!
Brian Williams, never known to throw a hard slider or curve, will make interesting viewing tonight throwing Fox style (to Palin) questions to Obama. Knowing Obama will be President in a few short days, I'm not sure much intensity will come from the President to be, or from Williams, for that matter, so close to Obama's coronation. Alas, the East coast media. What can we expect anyway ?
OBAMA is so precise,in control, and to the point. He looks and acts more presidential every day. I saw the clip of mccain asking where "jtp" is,and could not believe that 6 days to the election this is what this man is still talking about!! We are the republicans in his party? Don't they know he looks and acts so inept?I really have not seen anything like it.I give mccain credit to his service, but he certainly isn't acting or speaking in a presidential way. To me he is setting a bad example to the world with his constant lies, sneering. He does not talk issues.. he just shouts accusations.EVERYONE PLEASE VOTE NOV4  IT IS SO IMPORTANT
Not enough air-time for Obama last night? Seeing the reviews are so horrible on the Barack Obama mini-series from last night, NBC had to jump in with a softball interview to plug up the holes.
We now see Obama's strategy. Lower expectations massively, blame it all on the GOP, try to minimize the 2010 backlash. Sorry--it's not going to work that way.

Wow.  That's refreshing - a conversation about the Supreme Court with a candidate who actually has judicial and Constitutional knowledge!  Someone who clearly understands, without political or religous bias, what the Constitution is about.

No one can honestly say that any nominees from a McCain/Palin administration would not be the result of Christian extremists having their way, especially with Palin hanging around.

And from a Judicial standpoint, remember, the Justice Department has seen its biggest disgraces and politicization from this current disgrace of a President.  Its time for adults to be in charge...GO OBAMA/BIDEN!
How different McCain and Obama!  McCain would have dug the dagger as deep and often as possible.  Not Obama.  Much more respectful than the majority of politicians.

Obama-Biden 08
"Barack, Bush II inherited a "Significant recession", and then he had to deal with Clintons follie of ignoring terrorism for 8 years on 9/11. What Bush did is called hard work Obama. Something you've never done in your life. And no, it wouldn't be as hard as what Bush did."

This stuff is HYSTERICAL!  You can't make this stuff up...unless...I mean, your post above is a joke, right.  Seriously, this stuff is FUNNY!

It is no wonder that the overwhelming majority of thinkers, analysts and problem-solvers of our time believe Sen. Obama to be the better candidate for president.  His ability to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a process, the soundness of an approach to issues, is remarkable and reassuring.  I would vote for him regardless of party affiliation.  He is a once-in-a-lifetime leader.
