Battleground: The changing South

Posted: Friday, October 31, 2008 9:17 AM by Domenico Montanaro

In its front-page centerpiece, the Boston Globe looks at the changing South. The racial divides that have buttressed Republican power in the South for decades appear to be crumbling in this year's elections, loosening the GOP's firm grip on the region, political analysts and independent pollsters say. “The South is still culturally conservative, and the deep South in particular is still challenging territory for Democrats, political specialists say. But demographic changes - including a migration of voters from other regions, as well as an increase in education and racial tolerance among some younger residents - have given Barack Obama and other Democrats an opening this year and are likely to change the electoral map in future elections, they said.”

A new round of numbers from Allstate/National Journal released yesterday show Obama up in five states that went for Bush in 2000. In Colorado, he leads 48-44%; in Florida, it’s 45-44%; in North Carolina, it’s 47-43%; in Ohio, it’s 48-41%; and in Virginia, it’s 48-44%.

ARIZONA: McCain’s last day of campaigning will end in Prescott, AZ. “He plans to attend the party's annual Victory Rally at approximately 9 p.m. Monday on the historic courthouse plaza. The rally starts at 6 p.m. and typically attracts Republican elected officials from around the state. McCain's campaign officials and Republican National Committee officials could not confirm for The Daily Courier Thursday that McCain would attend the event.”

As polls show McCain with a small lead in his home state, MoveOn has announced it’s going up with a TV ad in Arizona.

COLORADO: Another voter-identification alert. "And according to the Colorado Secretary of State's Office, as of Monday 35,620 first-time voters whose identity had not been verified requested mail ballots. Those voters should have been instructed to photocopy their driver's license or other identification and include it when they mailed back their ballots. If they fail to, the ballots will be treated as though they are provisional. That means county clerks will attempt after the election to verify the identity of the voter. If they can't, the ballots will be disqualified."

FLORIDA: Could early voting put Obama over the top in Florida? "Despite the two-to-three-hour waits, the Florida numbers keep growing. As of the close of polls on Tuesday, more than 1.4 million Floridians had voted early, a figure that elections officials say could double by Sunday evening. In Miami-Dade County, where Birgin voted, 162,456 people had cast ballots through Tuesday, over 40% more than during the same period in 2004. In Palm Beach County, site of the disastrous butterfly ballot controversy of 2000, 56,685 people voted early in the first week, more than in the entire two-week period of 2004."

GEORGIA: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution calls the presidential race in Georgia a potential "nail biter," even though neither campaign is on the air in the state and no major candidate or surrogate events are planned. An Atlanta-based consultant suggests, "If the Obama campaign goes on the air with television advertising in this city, in this state, beginning this week to Election Day, Barack Obama will win Georgia."

Is this a case where Obama just has too many opportunities and not enough time? Imagine how many folks he get to attend an Atlanta rally this weekend?

MINNESOTA: A new poll out of Minnesota shows a whopping 19-point lead for Obama there.

NEVADA: The latest RalstonFlash: “Democrats’ lead in Clark is 51-32. Thursday’s totals: 18,500 Democrats and 12,500 Republicans voted. More than 38,000 voted -- keeps getting bigger every day -- 388,000 total. Last day usually the largest turnout, so total is likely to get as high as 425,000 voters or so, maybe even higher. More than half of registered Democrats already have cast ballots -- 51 percent. Nearly 48 percent of Republicans have voted. In Washoe County, Democrats extended their lead, too, by about 200 votes overnight. In the urban areas, the Democratic lead over the GOP is now about 80,000 votes.”

The Las Vegas Sun looks at the realities of each candidate's parallel Spanish-language campaign. "During these long months of presidential campaigning, the millions of Hispanic voters who read, watch and listen to media in Spanish have been gathering impressions that often differ in content and tone from those being communicated to the rest of the country in English."

NORTH CAROLINA: Just stunning -- the early vote turnout has surpassed 2 million voters in North Carolina. That's getting close 65% of the entire turnout in 2004.

OHIO: "With the presidential race in its final days, Republican John McCain campaigned across Ohio, struggling to gain ground against Democrat Barack Obama in a state that the Republican must win to have a chance of capturing the White House."

VIRGINIA: The Washington Post looks at how Mark Warner could help Obama in rural Virginia. But the paper also notes how some Republicans believe Warner is hiding from Obama in certain parts of the state. “Warner has shared a stage in Virginia with Obama seven times since securing the nomination in June. Three of those appearances were in rural Virginia.”

More: “Still, Gilmore and his supporters have accused Warner of shying away from his support for the more ‘liberal’ Obama and say they share a fondness for raising taxes. ‘Mark Warner is definitely hiding from Obama,’ said Mike Wade, a Republican activist and chairman of the 3rd District Republican Committee in Hampton.”

Just awesome.  No matter who you vote for, these numbers say great things about our country and the fact that people are involved in the democracy again.

The South maybe changing some but not that much ! Those states Obama has a 2-3 point lead in......
1. there just polls
2. Dems rush out in early voting and reps have waited, so I'm not putting much faith in those numbers !!!
Just a few facts:

Senator Obama is  HALF WHITE....

Senator Obama's blood is  RED.....

Senator Obama's heart is GOLD.....

Senator Obama is All-American.....RED, WHITE & BLUE!

OBAMA/BIDEN '08........The only choice....The intelligent choice.
GEORGIA!?!?!!?!

And you know it's over when you have to start defending your own home state.
One interesting poll number I heard this morning is that 46% of Whites are supporting Obama (compared to 47% supporting McCain).  If this number holds on Election Day (along with African-American and Hispanic support), then it's pretty much in the bag for Obama.

I wonder what Joe [not] the Plumber is going to do when McCain loses.  He'd better hope his record deal works out.

Obama/Biden '08!

We should have Police or ICE at each voting station that is in a mexican precint. That will discourage all those illegals Obama has rigged to vote for him
After all these years the American people have finally figured it out - there are more of us regular folks out here than there are one issue extremists and corrupt politicians.

WE THE PEOPLE are waking up - and we are taking our government back. Tuesday is only the beginning . . .

Obama/Biden '08/'12

I hope Obama marches into Arizona and Alaska and JUAT TRY...  He may be surprised that the home town folks don't really support their candidates as strongly as they would like.
Many do not approve of the politics they are exercising.

Give it a try, Barack!  What's there to lose?

Just keeps looking better and better that Obama will win many of the battleground states and the election in 4 days.  I hope that Obama puts some resources into Georgia and Arizona.  That would be too funny if McNasty lost his own home state.

Why is MSNBC tv wasting so much time showing that despicable Wicked Witch of Alaska?  I just switch channels and wait until I think she's done lying.  That's too funny that now a large majority of people polled think she's not even ready to be VP.  She is the reason McNasty is losing this election.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
"We float all sorts of bogus polling results out to the press to make this thing look closer than it really is." - John McCain
First, how sad is it that the republican's power based in the south was reliant on rednecked racism!

Second, what the heck is going on in the states with these election problems? Its so clear that the republicans were setting up new registrants up for failure...dont' tell them what they need to know, such as the photocopying of ID to be attached to absentee ballots, and holding them liable for not doing so, even though they weren't told to do it!  Its such a clear form of republican shinanigans to cheat their way in power.  When will someone wake up, and say, we need to federalize the voting sytem in this country, and make a uniform set rule that applies equally in every state, and make it as crystal clear as anything.

If Obama loses, its because of repulbican cheating at the polls and voter purges.
Mark Warner is intelligent to separate himself from Obama. A year in which the sitting GOP president has an approval rating in the low/mid-20's; the 'right track' percentage is about 9%; the economy is tanking; and the democratic candidate can only get 50%-52% in the most optimistic polls? There's something structural at work there--and the backlash in 2010 will be enormous.

It's about time the GOP is loosening it's grip on the southern regions.  their residents are getting younger and more educated, and that's a good thing. It's time for them to come into the 21st century.
ARIZONA: Your own state is beginning to think less of you as the old South, and majority of US (we the American people).

Be with McCain and get more of the same last 8 years for 4 more years.
Beverly, the decision maker

Vote EARLY for self and country
Vote Obama/Biden; I did.

FR: "But demographic changes - including a migration of voters from other regions, as well as an increase in education and racial tolerance among some younger residents - have given Barack Obama and other Democrats an opening..."

Its a great point. Because people in general are more mobile now than in the past, it really points to a future in which regional differences will be blurred.
What this election really is about is young Americans want to live a New America, finally leaving racial issues behind. McCain represents a transition from a time when black Americans could not vote but die for their country in a war to the Civil Rights movement (shamefully only South Africa was slower than us) but barely beyond. Barack is the New America, transitioning into real integration, a real unit of one indivisible country where finally young black kids can look up to role models and realize that the American Dream is alive for everybody and there are real choices to make between prosperity and a life in despair, ignorance, crime and drugs. Obviously, many whites are afraid of the new competition that will arise from that black empowerment, however, in the end we will all benefit. What can this country become, once we use our whole potential, is truely inspiring. If that means that us white people have to work a little harder too to get our piece of the cake, then so be it. Ultimately, the cake will be bigger, and it will be more tasty in many respects as well.
FR: "...as of Monday 35,620 first-time voters whose identity had not been verified requested mail ballots. Those voters should have been instructed to photocopy their driver's license or other identification and include it when they mailed back their ballots."

Kind of makes you wonder how well those instructions were communicated to people trying to register.
GO VOTE-YOU VOTE FOR OBAMA WE STOP FROM GOING INTO A RECESDION-YOU WILL HAVE A VOICE, EMPOWERENT AND MOST IMPORTANTLY CHANGE-

I VOLUNTEER FOR OBAMA AND WOW THE ORGANIZATION ON THE GROUND IS UNBELIEVABLE--

GO VOTE ON ELECTION ON NOV 4TH
Think what you may, but there's going to be alot of Red that turns BLUE (AZ,GA,MT,MO,LA,AR,TX?).  Laugh now, but just wait and see.  The electoral map is going to be amazingly BLUE, East to West, North to South!

Obama-Biden 08

How sad is it that the Republican party has to rely so heavily on uneducated bigots to keep them in power... And has anyone else noticed that Republicans are behind virtually every story that comes out about the purging of registration logs?  I find it detestable that Republicans will make such an effort to keep people away on election day.
Oh and one more thing: the new division in this country is an old one that has been covered by racial divide, religious issues, and fear, promoted by the Republicans and special interest groups to stay in power. The newly discovered division is financial and eliminates old party lines as struggling independent and republican voters wake up and smell the roses. Thats why so many support Obama, despite many concerns. The next election will be a landslide and change the political landscape for good.
I've been working the early voting polls handing out voter guides, and from what I've seen there are a lot of Obama supporters.  Still, I'll believe NC electoral votes got to Obama when it happens.
The question is really simple. Is the far-left wing of the Democratic party hard up enough to sacrifice leadership and the quality of this great nation by putting a crook in the White House?
It is good to our fellow Americans from the South changing their views, and voting on the facts. This whole silly, and insane view that some parts of our nation are more American than others. The insanity of one of the "Messengers of Misinformation" speaking for the "Insane McCain" Campaign stating that there are two parts of Virginia. Is our "Confederate Soldier" General Ptotenhauer going to dress up in her Confederate Unioniform today? Maybe she will run up, and down the DC area waving her Confederated Flag yelling. "Charge!" So my fellow Americans living in the DC area. If you see a lady in a Confederate Uniform, waving a Confederate Flag running around your street. Please call 911, because Nancy Ptotenhauer escaped from the hospital again.
It’s been amazing to see the high turnout of early voters in North Carolina.  I have already early voted myself and everyone is very enthusiastic about this election which is so great to see.  From old to young, white to black and all in between, everyone wants their vote to count this year!  We all deserve to be heard and I think it will be loud and clear come Nov. 4th that we want/need Obama!

The very sad thing about the south, and probably most of the country, is that some people still seem to care more about the color of this man’s skin than they do about the content of his character and his policies to help turn America around.  When are we ever going to get over the race factor?
Raise taxes on businesses and corporations and the economy and jobs grow....right Michigan and Rhode Island? Can I get a shout out from my brothers in the Big House and Spartan Nation as well as the Blue Hens? Come on ya'll. Tell us what happens, first hand. Check the numbers.
It's a bit premature to have avictory rally, Mclame. Even in Arizona!
