McCain camp: 'Dead even' in Iowa

Posted: Friday, October 31, 2008 2:26 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Mark Murray
Despite public polling to the contrary, the McCain campaign claims to be "dead even" in Iowa.

"He has similar polling," Campaign Manager Rick Davis said of Obama during a conference call with reporters. "He's headed back there."

Obama held an event today in Des Moines and will take his daughters trick-or-treating in Chicago tonight. Iowa borders Obama's home state of Illinois. Obama also skipped an event in the state when he left the trail to visit his ailing grandmother in Hawaii.

A Mason-Dixon poll, conducted Oct. 22-23, showed Obama up 51%-40% in Iowa. A Marist College poll, conducted in the same period, showed Obama up 52%-42%. Research 2000, conducted Oct. 19-22, showed Obama up 54%-39%. There have been no reliable polls in the past week.

Davis and political director Mike Duhaime (formerly Giuliani's campaign manager) urged reporters to not underestimate their ground game. They cited the millions of dollars the Republican National Committee has poured in. Davis called it "historic" and said it has "exceeded any campaign ever." Davis said the RNC-McCain campaign have spent about $325 million. Duhaime said the RNC has 1.1 million volunteers.

McCain pollster Bill McInturff (formerly the Republican part of the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll) stressed that Republican voter intensity is on the rise and urged caution on some polling, because of what he believes is some have been showing too-high Democratic to Republican party identification advantage. He believes Party ID will skew about three to five points in favor of the Democrats on Election Day.

The Oct. 17-20 NBC/Wall Street Journal poll had a five-point Party ID advantage (41%-36% with 17% strictly Independent) for Democrats and showed Obama up 10 percentage points.

"I think this is going to be a close popular-vote race, a close electoral vote race," Davis said. "We see a close race today, doesn't matter what it was 10 days ago."

Davis continued: "We had a saying during the primary, 'Believe your eyes.' There was not a single poll that showed us up in a lot of the primaries; we're confident we can accomplish the same thing in the general election. we have no indication to the otherwise."

But that's not exactly true.

Before the New Hampshire primary: The NBC/Mason-Dixon poll had McCain up over Romney, 32%-24%; USA Today/Gallup: McCain 34%, Romney 30%, Huckabee 13%; CNN/WMUR: McCain 32%, Romney 26%, Huckabee 14%, Giuliani 11%, Paul 10%.

Before South Carolina: Three Republican polls showed McCain up with Huckabee narrowly trailing and Romney and Thompson battling for third.

Before Florida: Quinnipiac: McCain at 32%, Romney at 31%, Giuliani at 14%, and Huckabee at 13%; Miami Herald: McCain 25%-23%

The NBC/Mason-Dixon poll (released 1/24) did have Romney up.

The Battlegrounds.
INDIANA: When asked what the campaign is doing in Indiana, since Palin has been there and Mccain has not, Davis said, "I have a sneaking suspicion that you'll see him before the campaign is over."

He then cited the efforts by Mitch Daniels, who "has towed a lot of the effort. We value Indiana; We know Obama has put in a lot of resources. I am really bullish we'll close strong there and be able to pick up a win there.

NEW HAMPSHIRE: Davis dismissed polling in the state showing McCain down by as much as double digits.

"There is not one state that shows more of a disparity in public polling numbers," Davis said, adding, "John McCain has always closed incredibly strong in New Hampshire. We think New Hampshire has always been a battleground. We wouldnt go there just for nostalgia purposes. We want to win."

He continued, "New Hampshire is a tough state to poll." He also said he was confident in the field organization in the state and that on the issue of taxes, Granite Staters should prefer McCain.

"Frankly, since Joe the Plumber has come on the scene," Davis said, crediting Joe with getting Obama to admit to wanting to "spread the wealth" and that Obama's plan for "cutting taxes for 90% of people is just hogwash."

"The state of New Hampshire is going to be a barn burner," he said.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this post inaccurately noted that Obama would be trick-or-treating in Iowa with his daughters.]

"It has taken a mismanaged foreign policy that almost lost a war, a botched emergency response that almost lost a city, a Republican Party that almost lost its soul and an economic crisis that almost lost the country's financial system to break the Republican stranglehold on the White House" London Times today...The whole world knows its over but McCain
Dead even?  Well, they got it half right.
Again with these stupid polls, no matter from which side. One poll ,polls mostly dem and gets one view the other does reps and get a different view. The only poll that will matter will be tues ! That one will be extremely close or a suprise.
OMG!  Don't these people ever get dizzy from all of the spin they're engaged in?

Personally, I'd like to know what flavor of drugs they're all on, and where I can get some.  Of course, they could be secretly planning to steal some votes too.

Obama/Biden '08!
http:jawillie.blog.com
The Mc Cain pollster claiming a huge comeback is just a complete lie- the only way that will happen is if the Republicans steal the election again - the polls barr people from voting and they dont count early returns which are leaning towards OBAMA. What we are seeing is the biggest landslide in history. Get ready - it is coming.
Uh-huh.  The only reason McCain must be in Iowa is fond memories or nastalgia.  He is going to be so buried there and nationally there won't be much left but to polish the internal obits of the worst campaign ever run.  It should all be over by the time No. Carolina closes.
Make sure to circle November 5th on your calendar, and get out and vote!!!

Obama/Biden 08
Rick Davis and company are so full of bull. Everything they say contrary to reliable polls is just a lot of information blowing out the ass. They'd be better off just eating more fiber.
"Dead in the water" is more like it.
Here's more evidence that McCain's campaign is being run by a bunch of idiots. ALL national polls show Obama ahead in Iowa.....some even up by 11 points. WHO are the Republicans trying to fool? Their dead beat supporters who know this election is already over and they might stay home instead of vote on Tuesday because it's hopeless? Yep. That's who.....people like gggg, no jo, blow jo, kenn....you betcha, those folks!  Obama supporters....go to the polls now or Nov. 4th and take back your country! Vote Obama/Biden and let's send Sarah back to Alaska on the nearest dog sled!      Obama/Biden '08/'12!
I think my head is going to explode!

OBAMA/BIDEN '08/'12!!!!!
It is Halloween and this is McLies' campaign.  You can't believe anything else they say why believe this?

Anyway, we need to get the vote out anyway (we cannot afford to take ANYTHING for granted).

VOTE FOR CHANGE NOVEMBER 4TH!!!
The only thing dead even today is the ratio of John McCain's impetuousness to Sarah Palin's insufferablity.
Rick Davis relies on internal polling but the incompetence of the McCain Campaign will need more than a gut check on this one. The public is too saavy to buy into such BS and their biased stats.

This is 21st Century politics and Obama is on the move in a big way. Polls don't win elections. VOTERS do. YES WE WILL VOTE!!! YES WE CAN!!!
McPalin has a ground game?  How about a message?  Haven't  seen either-like someone said "just a blizzard of words".
Why do the republican always talk about the polls. Just campaign please. You don't hear Obama's campaign talking about the polls are closing or all this other stuff. Can you all just state your message. I forgot you have no message. You message is do not raise taxes in a recession. You know what not to do, but you still haven't said what you are going to do. Maybe that will help you in the polls John if you start talking about your plans, your ideas; if you have any.
The current average for Iowa in RealClearPolitics is 11%

McCain's campaign is BATTY

Maybe Simple Sarah Palin is doing McCain's polling

BLOWOUT !!

Time for the adults to take over
Obama/Biden '08
The problem with Rick Davis is he is a pathelogical liar. This is one of the geniuses that convinced McCain to select Palin - Now they are both lying saying she is qualified to be VP. Funny stuff!

Credibility "my friends".

The good news is these stories will guard against complacency on the Obama side.
The McCain camp must be producing mass quantities of bong water over there, because every poll they do shows their guy amazingly close.

Me thinks somebody's fudging some numbers in a pathetic and futile effort to give their man some false hope...
I trust nothing coming from the McCain campaign these days.  This entire campaign, we've heard nothing but blatant lies from them.  If they say McCain's close in Iowa, that means they're about to get destroyed there.
Obama Lays Plans to Kill Expectations After Election Victory
Confident in an Election Day win, the campaign looks to lower supporters' expectations on concerns their hopes of 'change' are unrealistic, a senior aide says

And here we go folks...... more of his lies about what he'll do and how to go along with the lies he has already told !  So what is his plans after being elected ?????? makes you wonder
If only Rick Davis could package his delusion and sell it. The way Republicans create an alternate reality would be admirable if it were not so creepy. McCain has never led in an Iowa poll against Obama. I think Obama is back to give Iowa some love and hang out with his daughters there for Halloween.

We have proof of Colorado and New Mexico in the bag for Obama (see www.fivethirtyeight.com), when you add in Iowa Obama reaches 270. Obama is as close in Texas as McCain is in Pennsylvania. Chuck Todd, why don't you call Texas a swing state?
I think Rick has underestimated Obama's ground game.
the only thing that's actually working for the McCain campaign is the daily inciting of rage, fear and hatred among the easily-led gomers lined up outside of Sarah Palin's rallies. The truth is that politicians like Sarah Palin are merely manipulating, exploiting and inciting these people. And next Tuesday, we have a chance to seriously marginalize this darker, uglier side of America.we have a chance to tell the Sarah Palin's of the world that there's no room in American politics for fire-eaters who stoke archaic prejudices and fears rather than ameliorating them. We have a chance to tell them that not only doesn't it work anymore, but that it actually exacerbates electoral failure. There are a lot of things to ridicule about Sarah Palin's incomprehensible speaking style, her pathological dishonesty and her backwards, simplistic views on the issues. But it's her politics of fear and division that must be wholly rejected on Tuesday because it's too terrible to imagine waking up one week from today in an America that rewards the awfulness and fear which she and her subterranean allies require in order to politically exist.
Wow...just...wow.

The denial is strong in the McCain camp.  They remind me of Baghdad Bob

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Saeed_al-Sahhaf
IOWA,INDIANA,NEW HAMPSHIRE:

With all due respect to all the Republicans out there:

I've run all the variables out there through very carefully through two very complex and respected economic models. The answer is always the same, i.e.  Most of us will fair better under Obama's plans.

LET'S VOTE FOR SOMEONE SMARTER THAN US, WHO HAS FOUGHT THIS CAMPAIGN LIKE THE BEST COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OUT THERE WITH SOUND STRATEGY AND IMPRESSIVE TACTICS, USING EVERY TECHNOLOGY AT HIS FINGER TIPS AND HIRED VERY SMART PEOPLE TO ADVISE HIM AND TO RUN HIS CAMPAIGN.
VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN.  MY WIFE AND I ALREADY HAVE!!!

A RABID REPUBLICAN, VIETNAM-ERA VET, FAT, OLD, PREJUDICED WHITE GUY NOW FOR OBAMA/BIDEN
"They're not even [within] 100 miles [of Baghdad]. They are not in any place. They hold no place in Iraq. This is an illusion ... they are trying to sell to the others an illusion."

Bagdad Bob
So, basically what Davis is saying is EVERY poll done over the past month is wrong- McCain is actually MUCH closer in EVERY state and even nationally.

CNN, MSNBC, NYT, Rasmussen, Gallup, USA Today- what exactly have u been polling?  I mean, apparently, EVERY poll u've done is wrong (according to Davis and McInturff)

Yeah, I'm not buying that BS either- it was a nice try though
Bravo London Times.  No one else has said it better.
McCain wins any state he's within 5% of the lead. He wins half the states he's within 10 points of lead. The major media has done itself no favors in its  credibility with it's behavior the last two years. $600 million in "donations" for Obama is followed up with about billion dollars of free positive coverage of Obama by our media. It's no wonder CBS, ABC, NBC, and CNN, along with the LA and NY Times are going out of business. What will the Democrats do when all that's left for them is Fox?
Yawn.  . . . . . .   Who cares?   Iowa will go Obama on Tuesday.  McCain's staff is reaching.
McCain enough with you
Even in Iowa? We are supposed to believe Reopublican polls? Give us a break! Iowa started this great trip for Obama in the primaries and Iowa is going to be steadfastly in Obama's column come Nov. 4. I gues one can't fault the McCain camp for dreaming.
Lol, that is funny McCain is against eathonal! I think that the McCain camp is just spinning! McCain is trying to keep the Republican base fired up! In OK Country I saw on the news that there was a very long line! Now I know Obama is not going to win OK but most of those people couldn't wait to vote and that has got to favor Obama!
I wonder how their polling is so far from everyone elses.  How can they get that unless their calling group is 85% Republican.  I don't think that Iowa is that far gone.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next week with all that Hope Obama is giving us in their pockets. Don't spend it all in one place.
Davis said, crediting Joe with getting Obama to admit to wanting to "spread the wealth"

So he WAS planted there to trip up Obama. Silly me giving McCain the benefit of the doubt. Well, that's ok It didn't work so well.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08 - vote smart!!
This is another spin by the RePubs in the last hours to try and make it seem closer than it is.  Good luck with that as I believe this could very well be a blowout....  I do have one concern and that is the young vote in Florida, that seems to not be as agressive as forst projected.   Wake up students time to vote....
Lets be kind, at McCains age he without a doubt believes in the tooth fairy and Palin believes she can see Putin from her seaside home.Only four more days and McCain can check back into his retirement home and Palin can go back to spying on Putin, and Obama can try and pull the country out of the mess that Bush and McCain created,God help him for he's sure going to need it....
It has taken an inspirational leader to break the apathy, and execute a strategy to motivate the youth and disillusioned democrats of this country to register and vote, breaking the gridlock of 2000 and 2004.

EVERYBODY VOTE!
So every public poll has Obama up by double digits in Iowa, but we should believe McCain's campaign and their "we'll believe what we want to believe" attitude?

Isn't denial and stubbornness how Bush and Cheney got into trouble?
When asked if he's better off then he was eight years ago, Obama answered "Absolutely!".
when have facts ever bothered the McCain Palin campaign?

they don't care about facts, only how they can distort them to their advantage.

If they were close in Iowa, my home of Nebraska wouldn't be so worried about its 2nd congressional district's EV goign to Obama... There is a possibility that the whole state of Nebraska turns blue (i'd rate it at 25-30%, but its more possible than in the past... i gave Gore and Kerry 1% chance to win NE, and even Clinton lost NE both times...)
Gas pricse dropped true - but the petro industries is making record profits.

OBwan, IN (Sent Friday, October 31, 2008 2:26 PM)

=+=+=+=+=+=+=

With Obama is charge, no one will make a profit.

Obama-Biden 08/12
"...Duhaime said the RNC has 1.1 million volunteers..."

How many of those are off their meds?  Okay, my bad joke streak is running away from me.  or as Bill Mahrer says, "I kid"!
"the McCain campaign claims to be "dead even" in Iowa."

for once they were honest.  I also think they are dead even in his home state.
you know what they say, you can be anything you want ... on Halloween. Next day, not so much!
Now they're rejecting reality and substituting it with their own version. Yikes.
whether it is true or not, I hope the Obama supporters take it seriously enough to get out there and vote, and not take this election for granted
This crap is what is getting me stressed out. They are trying to fool us into thinking that the race is close so when they STEAL it they can point to these "non-existent polls".

I want this election to be over NOW!!  And I want to see Barack Obama the winner, which is what the TRUE polls are telling us.  Republicans are liars, cheats, and undemocratic. Make sure you go out and vote and don't be intimidated by the republican thugs that will try anything to make sure they keep in power. Watch the results from any machine vote. Don't let them switch it.
