Obama lauds McCain's SNL chuckles

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Barack Obama wants to see more laughter in politics. That’s what he told some 60,000 people at a rally here Sunday during the first event of a three-stop swing through a battleground where polls show a tight race.

The senator praised his rival’s appearance on Saturday Night Live during his usual riff on the need for a new kind of politics and for people to come together to solve problems. He said he had missed the live show, but had caught the Arizona senator on YouTube.

“We can argue and debate our positions passionately, but all of us have to summon the strength and grace -- and the humor -- to bridge our differences and unite us in common effort,” he began. “John McCain was funny yesterday on Saturday Night Live, but that’s part of what our politics should be about, being able to laugh at each other, but also laugh at ourselves, being able to understand that all of us black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American; Democrat ad Republican, young old, rich and poor, gay, straight, disabled, non disabled – all of us are in this together.”

The rally outside the Ohio Statehouse was meant in part to rev up enthusiasm from supporters and encourage them to vote early. Obama began his remarks by calling on all those who had not voted to go down the street to a polling place today to vote.

John Kerry won Franklin County by more than 48,000 votes in 2004 and Obama was headed next to Cleveland in another Kerry county, where rocker Bruce Springsteen was set to perform. The senator ends his Ohio swing in Cincinnati, a county Bush won in 2004 where he opens to drive up turnout and to help reduce McCain’s possible victory margin there.

Obama, who was accompanied by his wife and two daughters, told the audience that his faith in the American people had been vindicated by 21 months of campaigning, “regardless of what happens on Tuesday.” On Friday, the McCain campaign had taken issue with his use of the word “vindicated” during a speech in Des Moines, suggesting that he would have felt differently had he lost the Iowa caucuses.

For the second time in a week, Obama flubbed a pop-culture reference in trying to tie McCain to the unpopular Bush.

“When it comes to the economy – when it comes to the central issue of this election – the plain truth is that John McCain has stood with this President every step of the way,” he said. “He hasn’t been a maverick, he’s been a sidekick. He’s like Kato to the Green Lantern. Ya’ll remember that, those of you who are over a certain age.”

Kato was the Green Hornet’s sidekick, not the Green Lantern’s.

Earlier this week in Raleigh, NC, Obama made a mistake in referencing a popular 1970’s sitcom as he spoke about Social Security. He cited Sanford and Son, but then said “I’m coming, Weezy,” a reference to The Jeffersons.

Obama is about unity and hope -- not hate. Period!

You can see it night and day between him and McCain's dishonorable campaign.
Sure... not like Shirley Nagel, a McCain supporter who turned away kids at Halloween because their parents supported Obama.

She dressed up for Halloween as "Shirley the Sub-Human" by reading a page right out of the childishly divisive McCain/Palin playbook. If anyone cares to notice, Barack Obama has singled out only George W Bush and John McCain based upon their poor policies, bad judgement and ill sense of direction. He has never once divided the American people - ever.
McCain was hillarious on SNL. So was Cindy. Barack is certainly right about more civility in our politics. Although, when you consider how bloody past historical conquests were, around the world, mankind has come a long way...politically.

Obama's flubs are funny too.
"our politics should be about...being able to laugh at each other, but also laugh at ourselves, being able to understand that all of us black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American; Democrat ad Republican, young old, rich and poor, gay, straight, disabled, non disabled – all of us are in this together.”

Amen.  Nice touch in winding down a tough campaign.
Wow, have you seen, heard or can even imagine
Mccain praising Barack Obama on anything?
This is the important difference between the
two of them. One is professional, honorable
and sincere.
The other is an angry, snarling old man
(and, I can say this as am the same age)
I was at this rally and there were more than a few folks with tears in their eyes in response to Sen. Obama's message of perseverance and hope.  It was truly inspiring to think that the hope that he encourages has brought us, our country, to this point in our history. Even Sen. Obama commented on the sheer number of attendees on a beautiful, sunny Sunday afternoon. When Mrs. Obama introduced her husband with such pride, Sen.Obama came down our Statehouse steps, holding the hands of his daughters as they approached the podium - what a perfect picture of our probable first family!

Now it's up to us! Let's make this happen!
VOTE!!! Obama/Biden '08
In Obama's mult-million dollar infomercial he promises the American people he will:
*Be a uniter not a divider
*always be honest with us
*always listen to us
*always tell us why he made his decisions
In fact he has:
*Divided and conquered the Democratic party
*refused to listen to and dismissed 18 million voters
*gone back on his promise to follow and agree to campaign reform with McCain on public funds
*never told us why Senator Clinton was not qualified to be his Vice President.
Obama has lied on all counts. Just ask the people of Illinois. All of his earliest supporters and mentors now say: "Obama is a Chicago styled crook", "He is not the person we hoped or thought he was and he is not who he professes to be." The Hispanic communities he is suppose to represent say "He has never done anything for us". In fact, Obama voted 129 times "present". We needed a Madam "President" not a mr. present. He defrauded the American voters in all of the caucuses and should be investigated for fraud.
He cheated in the caucuses and Biden, Edwards and Clinton all know it. All of Obama's 700 million dollars will not sway me to vote for this liar and cheat. To his supporters I ask: Why are you voting for this liar? Complete power corrupts completely. McCain has a record of being a uniter. Obama has record of being a liar. I am a yellow dog liberal who is 57, and has voted straight Democrat for 40 years. NOBAMA LIES.
Obama is too little too late. Liberal for McCain 2008
Nothing is more un-American than to deny the right to vote.
When Senator Obama states that he has a 'righteous wing' behind him it does not mean arrogrance.  Instead it is his way of saying 'I have the Lord Jesus christ behind me' which every true 'Born-Again Christian' understands, we are only righteous through His death which have made us His righteousness.  "Righteous - 'He has made us righteous in God's eye, we have been made right with God.

Dr. Jaye
McCain  speaking in Scranton, PA, and is spewing his typical lies and half-truths about Obama. Every other sentence contains the words "my friends". I can hardly listen to him and his rabid "pro-American" crowds. Intelligent people have to see that McCain is an angry, impulsive, delusional old man who doesn't get it!! Lieberman is standing behind him with his perpetual smirk. Pennsylvanians, don't be fooled by his rhetoric. He is misrepresenting Obama's policies and plan for our country in an attempt to scare you. McCain talks change but he is stuck in the past; he doesn't know what real change is. Obama has laid out a realistic plan for his Presidency; McCain has not.
Ive knocked door to door for Obama, contributed money and have been on board since day one. But how dare he mistake Green Lantern and Green Hornet! Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart, even Guy Gardner could woop Hornet's butt.

He should have stuck with the Batman and Robin reference.
Wow....send him to campaign jail...after 21 months of campaigning...he makes 2 slip ups (that is a real important issue) Get a life...can't remember Elizabeth instead of Weesy...and confuses the Green Hornet with the Green Lantern.  very important here, Carrie Dann (the writer of this article)  We are so ready for you Barack....first time in my life I have ever voluntered or donated to a campaign...
we need you for our disjointed country..
Obama is not perfect. He can make mistakes.  I agree with him about humor, as long as it not done at the expense of another.
YES, man the fact checkers, stop the presses, HOLD the election:   Obama mistakenly says "lantern" instead of "hornet" in referencing comic book characters!  Unready to lead!!! lol
So funny! What a laugh. I think we could all sit back and enjoy a guy like John McCain as President. He is hillarious poking fun at himself. Real human quality not seen by either candidate recently. Thank you SNL for a great skit at a great time.
