McCain vs. Obama: A final round of polls

Posted: Monday, November 03, 2008 9:36 AM by Carrie Dann

Here’s the Wall Street Journal on the new NBC/WSJ poll: “Sen. Barack Obama enters Election Day with a solid, though narrowing, lead over Sen. John McCain as both men sprint to the finish line of their long presidential race.”

Here’s our writeup of the poll on MSNBC.com: “To put Obama’s eight-point edge into perspective, the final NBC/WSJ survey before the 2004 presidential election had President Bush with a slim one-point lead over John Kerry, 48 to 47 percent. Bush went on to win that election, 51 to 48 percent.”

More: “‘The McCain campaign is going to have to thread the needle to pull out a victory on Election Day,’ says Republican pollster Neil Newhouse, who conducted the survey with Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart. ‘The campaign is facing an uphill battle.’ Hart puts it this way: ‘The results of this survey says it is going to take more than rain, sleet or snow to derail the Obama express. He is holding all the high cards, and that is a hand that is hard to beat.’”

The final USA Today/Gallup poll has Obama ahead among likely voters, 53%-42%. Asked to predict the state of their personal finances four years from now, 48% say they'd be better off under a President Obama; just 27% say that of a President McCain. Asked about the nation's security in four years, an equal 37% say the country would be safer under a President Obama or a President McCain. Asked about federal income taxes, 48% say their taxes would be higher in four years under Obama; 50% under McCain. Asked about health care costs, 42% say they would rise under Obama; 61% say that of McCain. That means Obama has neutralized the advantage McCain once held on national security and taxes while maintaining a significant advantage on handling the economy and health care.”

The Washington Post/ABC tracking poll has Obama up, 54%-43%. The poll also “finds that Obama has firmly reestablished his advantage on handling the economy, beaten back a challenge on taxes and has an edge in terms of perceptions about which candidate would better deal with an unexpected major crisis.”

The Washington Post: “The waning hours of the longest presidential campaign in history elicited a fresh round of stinging attacks from Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain and their supporters on Sunday, a departure from the positive messages that candidates normally revert to before an election… Republicans in Pennsylvania brought back the controversial comments of Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., despite McCain's admonition that he should not be used as a political weapon, and the campaign unleashed robo-calls that employed the withering dismissal that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton made of Obama's experience when the two were competing against each other in the Democratic primaries.”

Meanwhile, “Obama cut an ad that used Vice President Cheney’s endorsement of McCain to reinforce his central argument that his rival represents a third term of the unpopular Bush administration.”

“Barack Obama and John McCain uncorked massive get-out-the-vote operations in more than a dozen battleground states yesterday -- millions of telephone calls, mailings, and door-knockings in a frenzied, fitting climax to a record-shattering $1 billion campaign,”

The AP looks at some of the myths of the 2008 election cycle. “Facts have taken a beating in Campaign '08. Each in his own way, John McCain and Barack Obama have produced enduring myths, amplified by their running mates and supporters. When a non-licensed plumber who owes back taxes and would get a tax cut under Obama is held out by McCain as a stand-in for average working Americans who should vote Republican, you know truth-telling is taking a back seat to myth-making. McCain has clung tenaciously to many of his distortions throughout the campaign, yielding on a few. Obama has taken a different tack when he is called on his misstatements. Although perhaps too late to really set the record straight, he's edged closer to the facts.”

“Obama's fist bump. Palin's lipstick. McCain's plumber. Clinton's tears. We've been through a lot in the two-year slog that will be remembered as Campaign 2008. Much of it was temporarily fascinating. And at the same time utterly forgettable. What will endure? What will fade faster than a campaign promise? The answers depend, in part, on who wins Tuesday night.”

Did any of the polls make any kind of attempt to call a few Republicans?
I don't believe these polls, go out and vote @ the Obama supporters. We can do this!
So the last round of polls has Obama up. Who would have thought two years ago it would have been Obama over McCain. We really have came a long way, and we still have so much further to go!

Check out the latest:

Barack Obama: "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."

So why does this comment of Obama's come out the day before the election? He said this in early 2008, but our elite liberal media doesn't find this to be important until election-eve? We know more about Joe the Plumber's taxes and Sarah Palin's wardrobe then we do about Obama's energy policy. I'm sure people in WV, PA, and VA would be very interested in Obama's anti-coal views, and would vote accordingly if they knew the truth about Obama.
IT AIN'T OVER UNTIL THE FAT LADIES SINGS. SO KEEP ON VOTING, BECAUSE "EVERY" VOTE COUNTS ! OBAMA/BIDEN 2008...FOR THE "CHANGE" WE MUST HAVE !
Looks like we're going to get a Celebrity President. This will make the Oprah crowd happy, and it will give them a lot of Hope. Be sure though not to spend all your Hope in one place though.
God bless America and put us on a path that allows the world to see what America is really about. Obama and his presidency represents what America is about. one nation with different beleifs and backgrounds united under one cause. I beleive mcCain and the other republicans attacks on who is a real american or not lets the world know how out of touch they are with America
VOTE...I DID
Barack Obama: A Leader Who Can Inspire A Whole Generation In America And Around The World:

Speech Against Iraq Invasion: October 2002, Chicago, ILL -
I don’t oppose all wars. And I know that in this crowd today, there is no shortage of patriots, or of patriotism. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other arm-chair, weekend warriors in this Administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne. What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income — to distract us from corporate scandals and a stock market that has just gone through the worst month since the Great Depression. That’s what I’m opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics.

Convention Speech: July 2004, Boston, MA -
Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America — there is the United States of America. There is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America — there’s the United States of America.

Race Speech: March 2008, Philadelphia, PA -
I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. I've gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world's poorest nations. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners - an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters. I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible.

Acceptance Speech: August 28, 2008, Denver, CO -
Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story, of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren't well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to. It is that promise that's always set this country apart, that through hard work and sacrifice each of us can pursue our individual dreams, but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams, as well. That's why I stand here tonight. Because for 232 years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women -- students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors-found the courage to keep it alive.

Vote.
This saga started for me in the primaries.  I am a 53 White Catholic Female who had never made a political contribution, never volunteered and never even attended a political rally. That has all changed for me and I hope and pray CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN happens on November 4th.
Looks like McNasty has fallen flat on his face in his final sprint to the finish line.  So pathetic that he's going to keep on campaigning tomorrow instead of letting his clueless supporters go vote.  But after tomorrow no more McNasty and his Wicked Witch on tv spreading their hateful lies.

I really liked seeing that the real polls make a liar out of McNasty's campaing lies of them closing the gap.  The tide is rolling in big for Obama and will wash away the dirty party.

Hey "Sinner" Sarah the phone's ringing for you, god wants to talk to you!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
“Third world country” status is indicated not by the absence of the rich but by the absence of the  middle class. The middle class has been in decline under Bush-McCain trickle-down policy.

America needs Obama. Don’t let the light go out.
McCain looks nuts and Palin looks pandering..the GOP sucks at message and sucks at personna...

Where did it all go wrong...about when clone bush
said the economy is strong...McDrama man is over soon.
If Obama wins, America loses.

It's that simple.

Here in Indiana, McGoo's henchmen have launched the Rev. Wright's very negative ad, and I tell you it is upsetting a lot of folks, now sureing up their decision to vote for Obama.

Old and over-hashed news.

<<"That means Obama has neutralized the advantage McCain once held on national security and taxes while maintaining a significant advantage on handling the economy and health care.">>

Let's see how the McCain camp responds to this one.

Tucker Bounds:  "Fine, those numbers don't look good for us, but does Barack Obama have a lucky rabbit's foot like John McCain does?"
Concerning the possible election of Barack Obama.

Don't worry because help is on the way.

Give it up, McCain!  Read the writing on the wall and accept your beating like a real man.
Voters, please make sure you get out and vote.
We cannot trust the media or the polls, all we
can believe in is our votes for Barack Obama and
Joe Biden.
This is the survival of our country!!!
We could'nt watch any of the local channels in Pennsylvania all weekend.  The local channels here in Pa were bomb bomb barding with slime and dirt attacks by the desperate maccain.  The few extra points mccain got these past few days are from stirring up the racists in rural Pa.  Most of these people know they are getting poorer by the minute because of tax cuts for the wealthy, but mccain knows that with these uneducated racists 'hate' is more important than food.  Even though when cornered by a a pathetic old woman asking maccain about Obama bring an Arab etc. Mccain had to admit Obama is a decent man and a family man.  But he started his dirt throwing & lies about Obama with the old Rev Wright films. "that is so old & lame."  Mccain could stop this dirt throwing if he wanted to, but he knows he is desperate and he has nothing else to offer.  Mccain has been courtin the racists in Pennsylvania for weeks now.  I've lived in a rural area a long time, and I noticed in the past few weeks the older, farmer, undereducated people around here are being brainwashed by continueous slime attacks on senator Obama.  Mccain should be ashamed of himself. He stated with his own mouth that Obama is a decent man and a family man  -- and yet you hear with mccain's own mouth saying "I'm John Mccain and I approved this message at the end of all of his dirt throwing messages."  I do not want this kind of person as my President.  And this country deserves a better person than that as a President.
I like the Superbowl comparison. Giants versus the Patriots. Everyone had the Patriots as the greatest team ever, undefeated,  unstoppable, Superbowl winners and the world was shocked the morning after.
Too bad the Dems were hard up enough to nominate a socialist. They will do anything for a laugh.

And McCain and Palin were good on SNL. Obama was a little pale. I had to adjust my set.
No fussing fighting or complaining on Wednesday. Let's just move forward as a United America into the future. The real losers will be those who squabble about the results at that point, just like in 2004. Push forward not back.
Republicans are always shown as down in the polls. Unlike Democrats, Republicans have jobs, families to take care of, and activities to go to, and it is difficult to contact them for any polls.
Polls, we don't need no stinkin polls!

The time for change is upon us.

Obama/Biden
Why Does Obama keep Saying Ah Ah Before He Talks. Is he confused? Sounds like He,s not sure Of His Believes, or Himself Actually
As a final comment on the election (and the "W" Years), we have truly departed from truth-telling and accountability in our politics. Sarah Palin does NOT get to say that she was "not" found guilty of abusing her gubernatorial power, when she was. Ted Stevens does NOT get to say he was "not" found guilty of any crime, when he was. Republicans (and Democrats) do NOT get to say that a presidential candidate is a Muslim (when's he's a Christian). And, no one should EVER challenge the Patriotism of another candidate (period!). Each primary-winning candidate represents the voice of half of our country, you do NOT get to call him (or her) unpatriotic, because than you are calling half of America unpatriotic. In closing, I hope the Republicans learn from this election that the strategy of character-assassination is no longer effective! Americans have been fooled not once but twice by Bush/Cheney and the politics of lies, fear and hate. I pray that we continue to evaluate our candidates on their ability to address issues and to instill hope!
God help us if the Obama Trauma is really elected.

There goes your vacation money.
I cant believe we are finally in the home stretch. I have been an Obama supporter since august 2007. I dont take anything for granted, I have already voted and am proud of my vote (hope it gets counted). So to everyone who can vote today, if not tommorrow just vote. Vote for Obama, vote for McCain, just vote. I sincerly hope to be celebrating on Wednesday for this country. To Celebrate looking forward into the 21st century with Barak Obama and Joe Biden as the winners in this years election.
marty
Obama/Biden
Add in the Military votes, that will fall 75% fo McCain  and I would say the polls change drastically.Go McCain
On paper its over. But elections are not won on paper, they are won in the election booths. I believe the Juggernaut beats McGimmick handily by a virtual landslide. This despite what one of the worlds most renowned Liars (Mr Clinton) said when I said Senator Obama would win handily (that makes me nervous). I just hope and pray that Obama does not put too many clintonites in the White House. Rahm Emmanuel being exhibit A. I don't think they represented America and the White House well when they were in even though the economy soared. I believe the Obama's are much more of a class act than the Clintons ever were or could be.

Obama/Biden 08
Sarah Palin will be forgotten by next year.  Who remembers the name of Dukakis' running mate?  Bob Dole's?
Robo calls and Rev. Wright are up in Sen. McCain's home state of AZ, too..

Just get out and vote! I have already had the honor to vote for Sen. Obama and hope to call him POTUS on Wednesday morning!!

Obama/Biden 08/12!!!!!
The increased visibility of Chuck Todd in the media this election season is the best unanticipated consequence.
He appears unbiased in the tradition of the great ones and yet, brings excitement and energy to the electoral process.
POLLS MEAN NOTHING JUST LIKE THE LAST 2 ELECTIONS=MOST REPUBS HAVE CELL PHONES AND WORK=DEMS STAY HOME AND DRAW WELFARE SO THEY ARE INTERVIEWED.
I'm a former closed minded Republican for the past 20+ years. I'm voting for the Democrates and hope they will take all parts of the Gov't. The reason is simple, if things are going to chage in order for the average person to benifit, then the democrates must win BIG. I've voted Republican for many years and now relize that this was a mistake. The Repulicans controlled both houses of Congress and the White House for SIX years and nothing was done to help the average paerson. Take a minute and check the facts and will be like me and change for a better tomorrow and the average worker will be able to better. I'm in disbelief that people in Ohio are even thinking of voting for a Republican, after that State has lost so many jobs and the Unions have been attacked by the Republicans, what else must happen to people before they wake up. It's about time the Average person makes out also and not just the people on Wall Street and Executives.......
What I don't see in any of these polls or political analysis is what effect these long lines at polling booths are going to have on this election??

It is criminal that in this technological day and age, in this sophisticated country, people have waited 2-10 hours to cast a vote!  I would expect this in a 3rd world country, not here.

I know Obama is going to be affected negatively by this.  People who are for him, and think he's ahead in the polls, and are faced with a long wait, will go home.  My own sister, an Obama supporter, said as much.  And these new young voters, used to split-second responses to everything are going to give up.

There should not be a wait that goes past 1/2 hour in any place in this country.
Sadly, I believe that there is a "Bradley Effect" in the country and it will raise it's ugly head tomorrow.
McCain and his campaign have insinuated racial tones throughout his campaign along with fear tactics.  This absolutely has divided the country in a negative way. But it will also have a dire effect on his adopted daughter who will clearly understand what he "really" stands for as a result.  McCain is such a shell of the man he once was.... Sad!
I voted for the winner. Experience behind a man really counts. Someone who pops out of nowhere and gains Immediate Hollywood status should be avoided like the plaque.Certain people with undertones that we dont know about should

I voted. To the victor belongs the spoils. We dont need a Hollywood unknown waiting to become a figure head who sits on his throne with a good gift of gab and money to run the country, and not know anything about him. We  need an experienced man in the White House. When his dirty laundrey comes out, no one will wash it except him, and so far it stinks mighty bad.  He going to need alot of Clorox.
