First thoughts: One day, eight points

*** Obama has a clear lead: With just a day left until Election Day, Obama holds an eight-point lead over McCain among likely voters, 51%-43%, according to the final national NBC/WSJ poll before the election. That’s down slightly from Obama’s 53%-to-42% advantage from almost two weeks ago. Still, to put his current lead into perspective, the last NBC/WSJ survey before the 2004 presidential election showed Bush with a slim one-point edge over Kerry, 48%-47%. Bush went on to win that election, 51%-48%.

Video: NBC’s Lester Holt speaks with NBC’s Chuck Todd, who gives the most up-to-date projected electoral map.

Looking inside the crosstabs, Obama’s advantage is largely based on his overwhelming success with African Americans (winning them 90%-3%), Latinos (68%-27%), and 18 to 34 year olds (59%-38%). It's about as solid of a three-legged support stool as any candidate could ask for. Obama also wins independents (48%-38%), blue-collar voters (51%-44%), suburban voters (49%-44%), and Catholics (49%-46%). McCain, meanwhile, has the advantage among evangelicals (78%-19%), those 65 and older (53%-40%), white men (54%-42%), and white women (48%-47%).

Video: NBC's First Read team discusses undecided voters, how much turnout matters and how big a Democratic wave could be.

One more thing: 30% say they’ve already voted, and those voters break by an identical 51%-43% margin. One thing that might keep the McCain folks somewhat hopeful about our numbers: We have Democrats with a +10 advantage on party ID; McCain's team believes the electorate won't produce that margin tomorrow.

*** Liking McCain but loving Obama: The poll also shows that McCain and Obama are pretty well liked by voters. McCain has a 47%-39% fav/unfav rating, while Obama’s is larger at 56%-35%. But what’s striking is the intensity gap -- almost twice as many respondents (44%) rate Obama “very positive” than they do for McCain (24%). In short, McCain’s supporters like him, but Obama’s LOVE him. Think about that 44% number for a minute: Obama's overall ballot number is 51%, meaning that 86% of Obama's supporters have a VERY positive view of him. Not since Reagan in 1980 has a base of supporters loved its nominee so much. Also, for the second-straight NBC/WSJ poll, Palin has a net-negative fav/unfav (39%-48%), while Biden has a net-positive one (50%-30%). In fact, if you add up Obama’s and Biden’s favorable scores, you get 106; for McCain-Palin, it’s 86.
***CLARIFICATION*** For the number crunchers out there, here's the math on that whopping 86% "love" number..  Assuming that the 44% of respondents who say that they have a "very positive" impression of Obama are also in the 51% of respondents who support the Democratic nominee, that means that 44/51 (86%) of Obama's supporters LOVE their guy.  That percentage is substantially lower for McCain: a 24% "very positive" rating, factored into 43% overall support, equals a 56% "love" factor for the Republican contender.

*** The Comfort factor: In addition to finding Obama likeable, voters are becoming more and more comfortable with him and the idea of him becoming president. Over the course of this general election, NBC/WSJ co-pollsters Peter Hart (D) and Neil Newhouse (R) have identified one key question in the poll for Obama: Do you identify with his background and values? And Obama has always trailed McCain on this score. Until now. In our new poll, an identical 57% say they identify with the candidates’ background and values. What’s more, 58% say they’re “optimistic and confident” or “satisfied and hopeful” that Obama would do a good job if he becomes president; 46% say that of McCain. And 42% say they have either a great deal of confidence or quite a bit of confidence that Obama will be able to get the nation’s economy back on track. That’s compared with just 27% who say that about McCain.

*** Other numbers: Also in the poll, Democrats hold a 12-point advantage over Republicans in the generic congressional ballot (48%-36%); just 11% believe the country is headed in the right direction; and only 26% approve of Bush’s job as president.

Video: One member of the first family will hit the trail on the final day of the campaign, but it won’t be President Bush. While first lady Laura Bush is set to stump for votes in Kentucky, the president has been notably absent from the trail. NBC’s David Gregory reports.

Says Newhouse, “Of those voters who disapprove of the job that Bush is doing, McCain loses them to Obama by a whopping 74%-20% margin.” McCain needs another 5-10 points among Bush disapprovers to cut Obama's lead. The poll was conducted of 1,011 likely voters from November 1-2, and it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1%

*** When McCain stopped being McCain: The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd raised an interesting discussion point yesterday that could become catchy with the CW: While McCain has tried to cast doubts about Obama, “it is McCain who is the enigma, even though he entered the race with one of the best brands in American politics.” One of the more popular phrases many a columnist will write this week -- if McCain loses -- will be something like: "McCain stopped being McCain." There will be a lot of Wednesday-morning quarterbacking that he moved to far to the right to get the nomination, and that he didn't distance himself more from Bush. When you look at the current NBC/WSJ poll and some of the voting groups McCain is losing, it's in the ideological middle of the country. The whole idea of a McCain nomination was that he was supposed to be the guy who could compete best in the middle. Instead, he's spent a lot of time courting the right.

*** Are you ready for some … more McCain and Obama? In addition to all the campaigning, interviews with the two presidential candidates will air tonight at halftime of Monday Night Football. Also, an “Ask Obama” special appears on MTV this morning. Just askin’ ourselves, but have we gotten to the point where we've experienced too much of these candidates? No more SNL, please; no more Ellen; no more Monday Night Football. (In fact, is there a venue where they haven't appeared?) Americans are probably looking forward to having their escapism back.

*** On the trail: McCain holds a whopping seven events today: He starts off with a rally in Tampa, FL, then goes to Blountville, TN (which is near Bristol, VA), then to Pittsburgh, then Indianapolis, then Roswell, NM, then Henderson, NV, and he concludes the day with a 2:00 am ET rally in Prescott, AZ. Meanwhile, Obama makes three stops, holding rallies in Jacksonville, FL, then Charlotte, NC, and finally Manassas, VA at 9:00 pm ET. Biden campaigns in Lee's Summit, MO, Zanesville, OH, and Copley, OH before ending his evening with a rally in Philadelphia. And Palin is in Lakewood, OH, Jefferson City, MO, Dubuque, IA, Colorado Springs, CO, Reno, NV, and Elko, NV before flying home to Alaska.

Why was NBC News so hung-up on the Mason-Dixon polls all weekend, only to have your own poll last night?  The Mason-Dixon polls have not been accurate all year.  At least CNN gives you there ‘poll of polls’, as does Real Clear Politics. Towards the end here, I have enjoyed the thorough analysis at fivethirtyeight.com.  I am still hoping for Obama to reach the mid-300 range of EC votes.
The First thoughts on the last day. Wow we really have moved a long way as a nation since this all started. I can remember when the Republicans big issue was immigration.

I think the biggest note to take from the final day is how many states McCain is going to be in. He is in a desperate attack to be everywhere, but his attempts will fail. He is going to spend time in states where he is losing BIG.

One more day to go...

Feel free to comment:

What is really great is the Ben Affleck mockery of Keith O. on SNL. Was that funny or what? I know Keith will mention it on Countdown tonight and I will be  there to watch. I am loving Kieth Olbermann!
PRERSIDENT BARAK OBAMA
DUMP the GOP and embrace change..
The Dem's can't screw us any worse then the GOP has the last 8 years...
I think socialism might be what this country could use a little of...can't be any worse then the greed and failure to insure domestic tranquility...
I think Senator Obama said it best - all we need to do now is VOTE! :)

Obama/Biden '08/'12

P.S. I saw an interesting thing on my way to work this morning - a PALIN bumper sticker! Poor Johnny Mac, those Sarah P. fans really know how to bite the hand that chose them - ouch! :)
Good morning America ! What will we all be doing on Wednesday morning ? "Still celebrating" !!!!! Obama/Biden "08 . p.s. Would someone please call the moving van companies for the Republicans because their party is "over".see 'ya !!!
"In addition to finding Obama likeable, voters are becoming more and more comfortable with him and the idea of him becoming president."

Remember the "MIddle Class Tax Cut" Clinton promised and the same "Middle Class Tax Cut" Obama now promises? Forget about them!! We'll see how much the people like Obama when he finds out the problem is worse then he first thought, and he raises everyones taxes, just like Clinton the Liar did. Of course you unemployed Obama fantatics won't care. You'll only get upset if you welfare/rebate check doesn't show up on the first of the month.
Independents make a difference.

Independents care about the issues.

Independents vote Obama!
Americans must speak tomorrow.....All Americans.

This election will not work without TURNOUT!

Anyone who can drive a van or a bus or an SUV and BRING LESS FORTUNATE PEOPLE TO THE POLLS should do so.  Volunteer.....GET OUT THE VOTE...

OBAMA/BIDEN '08......The only choice, folks.
The national liberal media should be proud of itself. We didn't know if they could pull out all the stops and give up all their credibility to elect an unqualified ultra-liberal to the highest office. Looks like they can still do it though. But after Obama goes down in failure, who's going to ever trust the media again?
How many jobs were lost in October? When will the job losses end?  Perhaps the voters will decide.

America needs Obama. Don’t let the light go out.
au contraire on the SNL comment.  I can't even get on the video link today.  People are eating this up.  If they would do all political sattire each week, most of us would stay through the whole program and not bounce back and forth.  Over half of their skits just aren't that topical for me.  I missed the Keith O. spoof, which was what I was trying to tune into.

Missouri will be blue for Obama; but questionable on the down ballot people.
After a year or so of Obama in office, people are really going to be poed.
How many jobs were lost in October? When will the job losses end?  Perhaps the voters will decide.

America needs Obama. Don’t let the light go out.
In the last 24 hours:

A tape emerged, (from the San Francisco Chronicle), of Obama stating that he would 'bankrupt the coal industry';

Obama picked up the endorsements of Hezbollah, Hugo Chavez, and the leading council of Iran;

WE CANNOT AFFORD AN OBAMA PRESIDENCY!!!

Use your brain-vote McCain.
McCain, in his SNL appearance, IMO came off as someone who in his heart of hearts is resigned to losing while putting on a brave front of going down fighting, and keeping his sense of humor about it at the same time. He really does do self deprecating comedy well, especially the the way he did the Weekend Update segment. His "double Maverick" shtick, saying that if being a regular Maverick didn't work, he'd "go completely berserkers and freak everybody out" was great, and not too far off from what his actual strategy has been.

I think he will be OK in defeat. After all, what's the worst they can do to him, send him to Vietnam? He'll come back home to AZ with his head held high, serve out the remaining two years of his term, and unless she's picked for a post in Obama's cabinet, will face Janet Napolitano in his next bid to stay in the Senate.
If you haven't already voted and you're neither a fool nor a masochist, go vote Obama/Biden tomorrow!  It's time we have a government that looks out for the majority of Americans and not just the corporate CEO's and monied interest in Washington.  Even more importantly, it's time we had good governance again and not Republican cronyism and incompetence.
Nice cover up of the "Dirty coal" story First Read. You should look into it. The story is on all the real media outlets.
Tomorrow is a new day in American history. Things will not be the same. This country will either make steps forward or backward. We are living in a world with new challenges and problems and the kind of leadership needed to help solve this problems or meet these challenges cannot be understated adequately. I am hoping that tomorrow Americans of all walks of life, race, creed, occupation, etc, all of the things that seem to divide, will vote for the one man who will provide the leadership needed in this time. This is a defining moment.
God bless America and God bless the world. (what is a blessed America if the world is cursed anyway?)
*** When McCain stopped being McCain: The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd raised an interesting discussion point yesterday that could become catchy with the CW: While McCain has tried to cast doubts about Obama, “it is McCain who is the enigma, even though he entered the race with one of the best brands in American politics.” One of the more popular phrases many a columnist will write this week -- if McCain loses -- will be something like: "McCain stopped being McCain." ------------------------------------------------

There it is in a nutshell...something I've said all along.  John McCain 2000 would not vote for John McCain 2008.

He ceased to be a "Maverick" and sold his soul to the very people who destroyed his candidacy in 2000 in South Carolina.

He may have had no choice, however.  Bush had the right going into the general elections in 2000 and 2004 and was able to play for the center.  McCain this year had the center and had to play for the right or risk watching them sit on their hands on election day.  In the process, he appears to have lost the center.

If McCain loses tomorrow, it will because he lost his identity and he will have no one to blame but himself.
Probably the right time to give a post-mortum is after Tuesday, but tomorrow I will be working to GOTV so like Maureen Dowd, I'll give my comments early.  It was not about McCain being McCain.

After thousands of hours of listening to pundits, the bottomlines are pretty clear.  Obama will win (big) because:

1. He excited the American people and they have volunteered their time and money to his campaign. Obama created the technical support to manage all the volunteers time and money.

2. The economy would not allow McCain to make the election become a referendum on Obama. It is, and will be, about the economy and McCain really doesn't understand the economy.

3. Some will call it the need for Change.  Others will call it McCain's closeness to Bush. McCain had many opportunities to separate from Bush and he did not. Cheney's endorsement in the end did not help a bit.

4. Picking Sarah Palin without proper vetting will cause many republicans to stay home or vote for Obama.  My own sense is that McCain's choice of Sarah will divide the GOP, rather than unite it.

Tuesday night we will have a new President, and of all things his name will be Barack Obama.
Why is MSNBC tv keeping that creepy disgusting Moronic Jerk on after his show is supposed to end?  I'd rather watch CNN than watch the mourning moron.

Looks like us voters are going to be sinking McCain tomorrow as we bid a not fond farewell to the most disgusting camapign and campaigners in history.

I am so enjoying that today is the last day of campaigning but I am sad that it's the last night of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report before then.  McNasty and the Wicked Witch were such great objects of derision, now they'll have to go back to bashing "Tyrant" Bush.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!

Here's something simple we can all do to increase exposure, especially in early voting states.

This is a link for downloading a Word file that prints custom 'I voted' stickers for Avery 5160 labels.

The sticker features the Obama logo with a green checkmark and the words "Yes I Did!". This is something everybody can do, so print them up and pass them out. Visibility Counts!

http://www.dailyviewpoints.com/pubs/yesidid.zip

Yes we can!
Liking McCain, loving Obama. As Ms. Dowd writes, McCain ceased to be the real McCain months ago. His brand and his image has been tarnished. On the other hand, Obama has kept his campaign clean and about the issues.

I saw an Obama campaign ad entitled, "How Did We Get Here", with Paul Simon singing the title song with images of troubled Americans facing healthcare problems, foreclosures, job shortages, etc. How Did We Gete Here? The final image shows McCain being embraced by George Bush. This is a powerful ad that should be shown nationally. A picture is worth a million words.

OBAMA/BIDEN - THE ONLY CHOICE FOR AMERICA
It is interesting to note that, in an interview this morning on CBS, Mitt Romney even admitted that Obama is NOT a Socialist!

So, the moral of the story is.....don't believe a word McCain and Palin are saying.   All they have done is attack Obama because they have nothing to say.  And Joe the Plumber (the fraud being paid by the McCain campaign) would be better off with Senator Obama!

Wise up,voters.....LET'S HAVE A BIG, BIG TURNOUT!

OBAMA/BIDEN '08
Here’s the deal folks, if obama is elected he will let down his false image and go back to being who he really is. Back to Rev wrights church, back to being best friends with Ayers, back to supporting anti American groups, back to supporting terrorist groups.
Question is do you as Americans want these people running our country ????

Currently we are fighting Muslims in 2 different countries, why elect one to high highest position in the world, here in the US. During world war II didn’t elect a Japanese or German to the presidency so why now ??? Times maybe hard now, but if obama is elected they WILL get 10 times worse. Do you want history to show a Muslim named Hussein to be listed with our great leaders? Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Hussein?

I don’t care what he keeps promising; HE WILL raise your taxes! He can’t afford to pay for his welfare programs without raising taxes. He’ll raise your taxes by repelling the bush tax cuts. That alone will raise you taxes, mine will double. America think long and hard do you really want someone with NO experience, with terrorist connections, and who supported over 20 years of anti American sentiment as our President ?  He has consistently changed his mind when things didn’t suit him and realized they wouldn’t work. He is like putting someone who has never flown a plane in the pilot’s seat with all of us as his passengers. People I understand we want change (as do I) but he is not it. He is too radical in his beliefs and too mysterious with his past.  As of yet he still has not produced a legal birth cert to prove his a natural born citizen. WHY? He keeps telling everyone he is Christian, but until he moved back to the US he was a practicing Muslim.
As, Brian Brokaw said on the nightly news there is still so much we don’t know about him. Too much to turn our country over to him to do as he pleases.

Tomorrow, we elect a new President, let’s elect one that we can trust and doesn’t hide his past. Elect someone who has America’s interest at heart, not someone who wants to liked and admired in foreign countries. We need leadership here! The economic crisis will end, and the country will be strong again only if McCain wins. Think about your children and grandchildren, do you want then to have an America to grow up in????

Pray that God does still Bless America !
I won't tell you I'm in love with Obama, I will tell you he will be the President who will lead our Country in a new, better direction.  I have a lot of respect for Mr Obama and his community organization skills and feel him applying this to the Presidency, can and will serve our Country in this time of need with a steady hand.

Obama/Biden 08/12
Hmmmm

I wonder why John McCain is coming to Tennessee today? :)

I feel an upset developing . . . and it looks like John McCain does too!
The Investor's Business Daily TIPP tracking poll released today shows Obama with 46.7% and McCain at 44.6% — just 2 points separate them!
Remember, this poll was the most accurate poll in the 2004 election.
The poll also shows that almost 9% of voters remain unsure. We believe this is incredible news.
Contrary to what the media and Obama want you believe, this election has yet to be decided.
*

Here in Indiana, McGoo's henchmen have launched the Rev. Wright's very negative ad, and I tell you it is upsetting a lot of folks, now sureing up their decision to vote for Obama.

Old and over-hashed news.

*
So, I guess we shouldn't even bother to vote since MSNBC has already declared its' winner.
You aren't journalists, you aren't analysts, you aren't "news-people,".....you are OBAMA-LACKEYS, and you have openly pushed, and campaigned for him all throughout this election cycle.
Your coverage is biased, unfair, and it mis/dis-informs the public at large about issues of the day. You have intentionally distorted and misrepresented the words, and deeds of every single opponant Obama has had throughout both the primary, and the general election campaigns.
I am so sick of the main stream media in this country, and it's love affair with Barrack HUESSEIN Obama.
Frankly, when Obama jabs his finger in the air, tilts his head down, and stares upward from under his eyebrows while engaging in yet another TIRADE at the podium, he reminds me of Adolf Hitler.
God help us if he wins tomorrow.
McNasty stopped being himself when he decided to become "Tyrant" Bush's sidekick and hire all of the disgusting lyiung lobbyists that have screwed up our country.  Too bad that McNasty did not reject and denounce the tax cuts for the rich and greedy and then come up with a plan similar to Obama's.  McNasty was never a maverick, just a boot licking lackey of "Boy" George!

I hope that the Wicked Witch of Alaska flies away on her broom and stays in the deep freeze.  If she thinks she's got a future here in the lower 48 then she's even more stupid than I know she is.  She'll just keep getting pranked if she shows her ugly face in any more camapigns.  I salute the Masked Avengers for pranking her and making her the laughing stock of the whole world!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Dosen't it feel like the "Super Bowl" ? Tuesday night will be one of the greatest parties in our nations history. Vote first, and we will all party hardy later. Obama/Biden '08
Democrats:
Please make sure you and your fellow Democrats get out and vote, regardless of the long lines.
You cannot believe what the media or the polls tell
us as they are as bad as the republicans and have
always supported the republicans.
We have to make sure the best men are elected to
lead our country and that is Barack Obama and
Joe Biden.
FR: "McCain stopped being McCain."

Not buying it. I did for a while, but not now. McCain has always been like this - emotional, erratic, and angry.

Google Senator Hothead and out of 100 current senators and who knows how many past ones in our history, every link will talk about just one.

You don't get that kind of reputation by being a good guy. And while short-tempered doesn't necessarily translate into campaign ugliness, its not too hard to see how those can go together. McCain is a guy who wants his, and doesn't care who he has to disrespect to get it.

So basically its the media who fell in love with what they wanted to see in the guy, while he's always been what he's shown us in this campaign.
Thanks First Read for so many great articles to comment upon throughout this whole campaign.  This has been my favorite place to hang out and comment on the race.  Thanks to all the Hillary and Obama supporters for all their great work here.  I will be so glad to see the McCainiacs disappear into the sewers they came from and not have to see their hateful clueless posts.

Happy Days will be here tomorrow night as we the people take back our secualr democracy and support Obama, Biden, Pelosi and Reid in fixing the many messes left by the clueless fools of faith.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
It's nice that you are actually citing the NBC/WSJ poll, as well as the other national polls.  For a while there, it seemed as though the MSNBC/NBC crew were intentionally ignoring them.  Is there a reason that Joe Scarborough and David Gregory are clinging to the Mason-Dixon polls, as though their very lives depend upon them?  The M-D polls are, of course, the only polls that show John McCain "close" to Obama.  The vast majority of national trackers and battleground state polls show Obama either holding steady, or pulling away.

What is most insulting is the refusal of hacks like Scarborough and Gregory to acknowledge anything other than that which supports their desperate and inaccurate narrative.  Perhaps the entire MSNBC staff should pay attention to which way the wind is blowing:  More and more Americans want reasoned, INTELLIGENT discourse.  Left-wing and right-wing pundits are welcome to present their views-

But they had better be ready to back those views up with facts.
<<"McCain stopped being McCain.">>

Thank God for that.  He might have had a chance otherwise.
If Obama wins it will be due to 2 things ONLY.
Race and Bush !

Millions are voting for skin color and the rest is because they don't like Bush ! This is really sad people. What ever happened to best qualified ?, eperienced, and interest of the country ?
Tonight I will pray extra hard for a big Obama victory tomorrow!  I love the man with all my heart and I know he'll make a great president!  Get out and vote for Barack Obama tomorrow!  Let's make this happen!
McCain is a continuation of Bush.  If McCain is the brand of a Maverick...I will pass!

He has been in Washington over 25 years and have yet to do anything oustanding other than push for a surge.

He has no great ideas and he has yet to say what he will do outside of the last 8 years of failed policies.

Then the VP pick...those old white men in Washington is NOT going to have Palin obtain that office.  That would undercut their status and they are not having any of it.  Sorry McCain..I have also noticed many status quo republicans are very quiet...they know McCain screwed up when he chose her.

When operatives are retracting their statements; that's not good for McCain. I remember Kay Hutchinson, the disappointment on her face...well I believe many of them may just get pay back by voting for Obama!  How funny!
I am always hearing someone say that the Obama supporters say mean and nasty things in The FR blogs. I will say this because I have been guilty of some of that. We may say funny things about The McCain/ Palin campaign, but you never hear a one of us Holler ,Kill Them or call them un-american. The truth is this to be Liberal or Conservative is to be a true American .
I heard a rumor that the internet may crash today due to the extrordinary volume of email traffic.
We've had the Bush family for 12 years and the Clintons for 8. That's 20 years of U.S. rule by 2 families. Time for a change.

Ralph Nader 2008 - no socialism here.
"There will be a lot of Wednesday-morning quarterbacking that he moved to far to the right to get the nomination,"

That should be "too far" not "to far"
Obama will in all likely hood win. But he will go into office with a country more divided than Lincoln and at the lowest approveal rating of any president. Bush is currently at 30-32 % Obama will go into office with about a 48-50 % approval rating which will continue to fall. He is the poorest choice as a Black President that we could have ever had. His past, his closest friends, his policy, his view of America will ruin ANY hope of future black Presidents.
I have a feeling we are going to have an Obama president by late tonight and everyone will wake up to their local newspaper saying "Barack Obama Makes History!"
Win or lose, we all know McCain is the better man for president. And we ALL know Palin is the obvious choice over Bonehead Biden.

We'll see how smart America is tomorrow.

Vote for reform and respect with McCain or tax hikes and class wars with Obama.

Thank Goodness-Sarah is finally going back to Alaska!
