Obama hits McCain on the economy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- With the election one day away, Obama returned to a central theme of his campaign: McCain is not prepared to be the steward of the nation’s economy at this difficult time.

The Democratic nominee congratulated his rival on the tough race he had fought before going on to riff about how electing him would mean a continuation of the bad economic policies of George Bush -- another of his campaign’s main arguments.

Calling economy “central issue in this election,” Obama reminded the audience here about a phrase McCain had uttered in the same arena, which he said showed the Arizona senator did not understand the depth of the economic crisis the country was facing.

“Remember what he said when he was here in Jacksonville on September 15th? That day, more than 5,000 jobs were lost and more than 7,000 homes were foreclosed on,” he began. “The day before, former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan said we were in a 'once in a century' crisis. And yet, despite our economic crisis, John McCain actually came here, to Veterans’ Memorial Arena, and repeated something he’s said at least 16 times on this campaign. He said -- and I quote -- 'the fundamentals of our economy are strong.'"

The crowd booed and Obama, said “You don’t have to boo, you just have to vote” -- a line he uses several times a day. He went on the say that line by McCain summed up an “out-of-touch on-your-own economic philosophy” that favors the wealthy and big corporations and not the middle class.

For months, Obama and his running mate Joe Biden have been portraying themselves as champions of the middle class, fighters for working people, and their efforts appear to have paid off. Per the latest NBC/WSJ poll, 42% say they have either a great deal of confidence or quite a bit of confidence that Obama will be able to get the nation’s economy back on track, compared with 27% who say that about McCain.

Over the course of the last week, Obama’s speeches have contained a running countdown to election day -- “in one week”, “in six days” -- which today became simply “tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow, at this defining moment in history, you, each and every one of you, can give this country the change that we need,” he said, before telling the audience not to slow down or let up over the next 36 hours in their efforts to elect him.

“This is gonna be close here in Florida. This is gonna be close all across the country,” he said. “Understand at this point, I’ve made the arguments. Now it’s all about who wants it more. Who believes in it more.”

The stop in Duval County, which George Bush won with 58% of the vote in 2004, was the first of a three state swing. After Florida, Obama was headed to Charlotte, NC, in a county John Kerry won by nearly 12,000 votes and then to Manassas, VA, where Bush got 53 percent in the last election. He spent Sunday stumping across Ohio and for a moment this morning forgot that he was now in the Sunshine State, substituting Ohio for Florida. When the crowd corrected him, he said “I’ve been traveling too much.”

I CANNOT wait to vote for this honorable man first thing tomorrow morning!  Yes We Can!  We Dems want it more and We believe in you more!
What economy?? Mccain hasn't had an acceptable idea or policy yet. We all saw him fall completely apart when the financial crisis raised its ugly head. He went from one erratic decision to another.
Mccain has no ideal what is really going on in this
world or how to help it.
Never forget his deregulation.
America needs Obama. Don't let the light go out.
Sure wish that Obama would do one more rally in Pennsylvania. Got to protect home court or all the red he has turned blue will not help at the end of the day!
What do you liberal mensa members think will happen when Obama signs all his environmental legisilation into law? You think car makers and coal miners will have a job anymore? Raising capital gains taxes is nice, but will result in a market sell off and lower tax revenues because of less economic activity. Think that will help America?

Liberals would cut off their noses to spit their faces, and it looks like that has already happened to many of them.
Bye Bye John.....be sure to take your running mate with you. Oh yeah, dont forget to "donate" her wardrobe on Nov 5th.
It's kind of confusing how raising everyones taxes improves the economy.

Don't Let Up Barack!

Keep the hammer going!

It's not over 'til it's over

Go VOTE tomorrow!

Everyone, get out the vote!!!

Most folks from other nations ( our allies) want Obama in a three to one ratio. Guess they are too smart to believe all of these lies that he is a terrorist, Muslim, etc!! The Muslim thing really caught on down here in Redneck Land, I have been truly amazed at the gullibility and stupidity of  so many  American citizens. No wonder they cannot see how  unprepared and  ignorant Sarah Palin is.
Obama's and Biden populist message sounds oh so good. Too bad there aren't any new ideas in that message, just the same old tired socialist ones of the last century.
McCain does NOT have the ability to lead this country out of its economic crisis.

OBAMA DOES.   Period....

OBAMA/BIDEN '08  .....The only choice for America.

I'm hoping for an early night tomorrow -- that Obama will win VA, PA, GA, NC, NH, OH, and FL, early, and then the west (OR, CO, NM, NV, and MT) will put him into "mandate" territory.
The fundamentals are sound Barack. We're not even in a recession, and your blathering this garabage? A capitialistic society will always right the ship once a problem occurs. Your policies on the other hand are nothing more then the government controlling everything. We see how that works in Canada, Brition, France. Those countries are completely broke, even more then we are. And your saying that's a good thing.
Just a note to the McCain supporters who are whining and complaining in here today.  After the election, please try to handle the loss with class.  More whining and crying and complaining will only make you look like bigger losers than you already are.  There's nothing wrong with being graceful in defeat.
Wondering about Obama's judgment, steadiness and administrative ability?  Look at how he's handling himself and his campaign, compared to McCain.
Stick a fork in pork barrel McCain he is done!!!!Thrilling is the prospect of Sarah Palin finally going away. Wednesday at this time, it's entirely possible that we'll see the last of Sarah Palin on the national stage. At least for now.
Yes!  It's the economy, stupid!  That's what will beat McCain.  Keep it up, Barack!
Obama will bring back the middle class and our standing around the globe.  Just look how he's managed his campaign... it's been organized, well managed and two years without a glitch... This is the man I want in the Whitehouse, this is the man I want taking charge of this country's economy.

Obama is a brilliant man, a man with the right temperament and wisdom to lead the United States back to leader of the free world.

Obama/Biden 08-12
There's the difference between Obama and McCain.Obama has gone into states and county's that Bush carried, does Bomber go anywhere that is not friendly to his party. Not to my knowledge, only playing to the base, same with Bristol Bay Barbie, can you see her campaigning in say Detroit,Cleveland,Miami with all those brothers around.come to think of it I haven't ever seen a Person of color at any of her stops who where there on there own and not working.
I think by your not promoting the person that clearly has experience, proven leadership ability, that served "God and Country" by defending, and protecting "Life", for our "President" who is "John McCain" was your error.
Instead you chose to take a man made belief of a man growing up with radical "influences" to lead a nation that has been founded on "FREEDOM" who will make all decisions of ours about spending our hard earned income and distributing it to those who don't know freedom is earned by doing things "God's Way".
Prayers will be answered by those who have prayed for "McCain's Victory where the "Americans" won't be denied their "Dream" of "God Given Choice"

The decision is clear. The Republicans have presided over the worst decline in American influence and economic security in my lifetime (65 years). They want us to believe that it is all Bush's fault, but they were glad enough to stand with him in the glory days of 2001 and 2002. They have had their chance and it is time to see what the Democrats can do. As the saying goes, "Insanity can be defined as doing the same thing over and expecting a different result". Are we going to vote insanely by reelecting the Republicans and expecting a different result from what they have done in the last 8 years? I was a Reagan Democrat, but this Republican Party has failed miserably. Vote for Obama and the other dems.
When Sarah Palin comes on...I turn the channel...they are now trying Wright hahahahha....well lets have fair play...how bout Palins witch doctor pastor?????  I am so sock of this slime campaign...Wright is a dead subject...and good to see McCain stuck to his word about not mentioning Wright...this man has no moral fiber whatsoever.  Do you people really think he will do what he promises...he hasnt done anything in this campaign that he said he wouldnt do...so I sure wouldnt trust him to be president.
I would love for this country to divide, let the obama idiots go their way and the rest of us go ours.
If ever there was a time for this nation to break apart it is now ! I never thought I would see the day when this nation would be better off as 2 different countries, but now I do !
Empty rhetoric runs freely from the voice of Obama. He has yet to ever prove he has the ability to deliver on one promise he has made in his political career. Good talker, bad walk the walker.
So McCain had only about 1000 people show up in Tampa Florida. They were expecting a couple thousand. That tells you about McCain and who will win florida. Go Obama!
obama is not prepared to be steward of anything, but the ruin of this nation !
Even Obama can't keep his promises and states straight Ohio, I meant Florida. America, get used to hearing those words if he is elected, "What I meant to say was" Halloween is over but that is scary!
Next thing Obama will want to tear down the white house because it's not good enough for him ! This is a vile and disgusting man ! He should never make it to tomorrow.
Clara, Kansas City, MO

Best of luck tomorrow; I hope Senator Obama can carry your state. Ohio, PA, FLA - keeping my fingers crossed for a good day all around.
McCain and his team, have all the answer's to the test.  They have failed the test, because the truth of the matter is, their moral values are "counter-fit's".  They cling to gun's, religion, children, patriotism, country first, flag pin's, and could care-less about them, but only use them to rape, and divide us for their greed and desires.
They can not say they will help the poor or middle-class, because their master believes, that is a "fear" that cannot be accepted by those that "create fear".........
So how does obama plan to worsen the economy ? What's his real agenda,? Will he reveal all that he's been hiding ? When will he let binladen go ? What has he promised foreign countries ? How bad does it have to get before you people realize you screwed up?
They all have got to be exhausted at this point. This grueling campaigning all across the nation has got to take it's toll; however, OBAMA hasn't let up and neither should we. It's not over until the votes are counted. Please remember to vote, if you haven't already and take anyone else with you that you can. DO NOT let the Republicans STEAL another election from the Democrats.....especially THIS year. We need this man like we've never needed anyone before. McCain is WRONG for this nation, WRONG for this economic crisis, WRONG for health care, and WRONG for foreign policy. Let's elect the SMART guy this time!
                                  Obama/Biden '08/12!
Obviously neither of the candidates has the knowledge to handle this financial crisis.  This is an economic catastrophy which has many of the greatest business minds of this century confounded.  Therefore it will require solutions that are new, untested and the result of a world wide collaboration.  Obama seems to have the open mindedness and willingness to reach across parties lines and borders to solve an economic problem that like our financial system is now global.  It is not about having the answers.  It is about having the drive to find with whom and where the answers lie and the strength to make very tough choices to enact the solutions.
McCain also said, "I do not understand economic issues" during a debate. He was absolutely correct. No candidate is perfect, but there is a chance with Obama. There is zero chance of good judgment or leadership with McCain.
It's the economy Johnny. If you only knew anything about it. why would anyone trust you when you have said you don;t know much about it.What have you been doing for the last 27 years in the senate.I know you laughed off your days at OCS school. You drank and chased and broke every rule on the books. You had a hard time keeping aircraft flying, anyone that had that hard of a time would have had there wings clipped, thanks to daddy you got to keep flying.I have to ask myself who is the smart one on your ticket? And I don't mean smart a@#.You haven't shown a whole lot of smarts,Saraha only needs to speck to show her creeds. You must have Given Tucker the day off, haven't seen one response from your camp today?
McCain says "Senator Obama thinks that taxes are too low... I think that spending has been too high"

John, I have to agree (finally) with something you said... spending HAS been too high.

Spending $10 BILLION a month in Iraq is IMMORAL.
I have to laugh at the GOP posters in here talking about raising everyone's taxes.  Quit with the lies liars, thats not his platform.  Do you know who is raising everyone's taxes ?  MCCAIN.  McCain's central healthcare plan is to TAX EMPLOYER HEALTHCARE CONTRIBUTIONS AS EARNED INCOME.  Thats right folks, another $200 or so in taxes a month, for everyone that has employer based healthcare insurance.
Karen FL, you sound just as vile and disgusting as you claim Obama to be.  What do you mean that he should never make it to tomorrow? You sound like a bigot.
The Republicans have presided over the worst decline in American influence and economic security

that is until obama gets elected !
Good old 'Brition'. Hey genius, guess what else is fundamental? Reading (and spelling)!
This nation shuld adopt the Texas way of thinking, if he does you wrong you shoot him and be done with it !
That doesn't bode well for the loser obama !
I cannot believe that anybody would say that dividing our country is better if Obama wins.  It seems kind of funny that the people that keep calling Obama unpatriotic are the ones that are making the most unpatriotic statements.  Baracks messages have been about unity and hope and "united" states of America.  I always liked John McCain and even considering voting for him when he ran against Bush and was sorry he did not win the nomination.  He has traded that good reputation he had and sold out every ounce of integrity he ever had to win the presidency.  Unforunately for him, this will be what everyone remembers, this is his legacy.  Good job John!
Get a grip people. I left America because of Bush and look what happened to you all, I won't come back until you want to help yourselves to recapture the possibility of the American dream for all. PLEASE make me a proud American once more.
Do it for future generations so that they have a chance at a better education, better jobs, and a better life. Obama/Biden 08
