Obama grandmother dies

Posted: Monday, November 03, 2008 4:41 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

The Democratic nominee's campaign announced this afternoon that Obama's grandmother has died at the age of 86. The nominee last saw her on Oct 23-24 when he flew home to Hawaii to see the ailing "Toot," who helped to raise him while his mother was overseas.

Video: Madelyn Dunham, the grandmother who raised Barack Obama in Hawaii has died after a long battle with cancer. NBC's Lee Cowan reports.

Here is the statement just released by Obama and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer.  She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility.  She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances.  She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring.  Our debt to her is beyond measure.

Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time.  It brought our grandmother and us great comfort.  Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date.   In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer."

*** UPDATE *** The McCain campaign just issued a statement in response to the news. "We offer our deepest condolences to Barack Obama and his family as they grieve the loss of their beloved grandmother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them as they remember and celebrate the life of someone who had such a profound impact in their lives."

OMG!!! This is so tragic!!! Senator Obama, please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
This is truly a sad day! RIP Madelyn Dunham...and smile upon your grandson tomorrow!
Rest in peace, Mrs. Dunham. How sad that you will not see just how great a job you did in raising Barack.

My prayers and sympathies are with Sen. Obama and all her family. I'm glad he was able to say good-bye.
One day short...
This woman did a wonderful job. Truly one of the Greatest Generation.
Thank you ma'am.

Heartfelt condolences to Sen. Obama and his family.  It is too bad that Mrs. Dunham passed away just one day before the election.

May God bless her and her family.  I am deeply saddened that she couldn't make it just a few more days but I know she will be smiling down from above.  I implore the rest of the posters here to keep your posts classy and respectful.
Very sad day. Just two more days, she had to hold on.

But God decided otherwise.

Condolences to all the Obama family.
My heart breaks for your family's loss... I am glad you had the opportunity to see her one last time before her passing.
I'm sorry to hear the news. My condolences.
Prayer go to Obama, his sister and their families.  We will deliver tomorrow and have a President Obama.
grandmothers are very special -- I know I miss mine.
Thoughts and prayers to Madelyn Dunham along with all who knew and loved her.
AMEN
Sad, a shame he wont get to share tomorrow's victory with her. I'm sure she will be very proud though
Thia man has demonstrated that he is capable of "carrying on" in the face of personal tragedy and hardship. That is a quality that I want in my leader!
Thank you for all you instilled in your grandson. He is about to take all he has learned from his extraordinary family and inspire an entire generation with his graciousness and dignity.

I think actually he already has.

My heartfelt condolences to Senator Obama and his entire family.

Oh my God!! I pray that her soul rest with the fact that she played a MAJOR role in shaping the next President of the United States.  I know she sees him, and will watch from above as her grandson wins the electon tomorrow, and takes the oath of office on Jaunary 20, 2009.  Rest in peace "Toot", and that you for giving the world Barack Obama.
The greatest and most lasting gift anyone can give in her memory is to get out and vote for her grandson, Barack Obama.  What better tribute to her life than making sure he is elected!
My prayers go out to the Obama family.

God Bless

Obama 08'
It is truly sad that she left us at this time.  My condolences to the Obama family in their time of sorrow. She left us with a great treasure when she shaped this man, Barak Obama. May she rest forever in the light of God and soar forever in Heaven. Amen
What sad news. I'll be holding the Obamas in my thoughts.
This is sad news. I was hoping she would live to see him elected. I'm very glad he went to see her when he did; those final good-byes are very hard, but meaningful and comforting later on. I know she was very proud of him and the man he has become and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for such a fine young man she helped raise. She will be missed by Barack and his family.
God Bless her.  May she rest in peace.
My condolences to the Obama's today. The timing of this must be that much more devestating to the Senator that she wasn't able to hang on for a couple of more days to share in what could be one of the greatest moments of their lives.

My condolences to the Obama family.  It is such a shame that his grandmother died so close to seeing her grandson become the next president.
All the hateful people demanded that Barack provide his birth certificate.

Perhaps they will demand a death certificate for Grandma as well.

Our prayers are with the Obama family.
How very sad that she didn't live to see her grandson become President of the United States.  But I'm sure she died with a feeling of peace and pride for the family that she raised.  God Bless Toot and Barack Obama and her entire family.
What a bitter-sweet time this must be for their family.  So sad that she couldn't last just a little bit longer.

RIP "Toot"
All Americans and Republicans send our condolences and prayers to the family. It will be good to have a blog with no name calling a hate from the Obama supporters for once. Respect her passing please.
My greatest sympathies are with the entire family. Her spirit will live on within her grandchildren and great grandchildren. God bless and speed her to her husband and daughter who await her in heaven.
How very sad that she didn't live to see her grandson become President of the United States.  But I'm sure she died with a feeling of peace and pride for the family that she raised.  God Bless Toot and Barack Obama and her entire family.
God Bless Madelyn Dunham!  May Obama's grandmother watch over Barack from heaven and help deliver him to victory
This is so shocking...I know what it is like to lose a grandmother...Oh Toot" he's a fine man and this one is for you !OBAMA 08' GOD BLESS !
My condolences to your loss, Senator Obama. I know that she would've wanted to be here to see you win.

Now, you have more reason THAN ANYONE TO WIN: You're now winning for her love that has garnered you and your family with so much strength, compassion, hope, and most of all, honor. You have to win to honor her with this win.

Mahalo Toots. Go With Jesus Christ, and take your rest.

GOBAMA!!!
GO BO/JOE
Obama/Biden 08/12
Our condolences to the Obama family.

Concerning this, I hope Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity will refrain from their usual ignorant inferences. Perhaps even the scumlords from the "GOP Trust" and "Let Freedom Ring" will ask for her forgiveness for being the complete embodiment of evil.
OMG!! This is beyond sad. Just one more day and she most likely would have seen her grandson elected to the highest office. My sympathies to Barack and his family.
It's really sad that she never got to see her grandson become president, however I'm sure that she was incrediably proud nonetheless.
SHE DID A WONDERFUL JOB........

WE GOT YOUR BACK NOW....
May Mrs Dunham be at rest after her battle with a horrible disease.

My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.
How incredibly incredibly sad.  I just cannot believe she died one day before Obama becomes president.  This breaks my heart.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord.  May the perpetual line shine upon her and grant her peace.
May she rest in peace.

Only a woman who gave Barack the chance of a life time to meet every bit of his potential would have the best seat in the house when her grandson is eleceted as our 44th President tomorrow.
I'm sure no one wanted her to make it through tomorrow more than Barack and Michelle.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you and know that she will 'know' of tomorrows outcome.  I'm sure she couldn't have been more proud of the man Barack Obama is.  Rest in Peace.
