Pentagon briefings to start 'almost immediately'

Posted: Tuesday, November 04, 2008 1:25 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski
Since the upcoming political transition will be the first in wartime since Vietnam, Pentagon officials say they are prepared to begin briefing the President-elect's transition team, "almost immediately" after today's elections on a wide range of military operations and Pentagon programs.

"We are undertaking Herculean efforts to ensure the transition goes as smoothly and seamlessly as possible," according to one official.

The officials tell NBC News they intend to expedite the security-clearance process so that transition members would actually be able to sit alongside top Pentagon and military leaders during secure satellite briefings with combatant military commanders from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Given that the U.S. military is engaged in two shooting wars overseas, Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered dozens of senior Pentagon leaders to come up with an aggressive plan for a smooth and rapid transition.

Gates laid out a number of objectives, to ensure uninterrupted combat operations overseas, to facilitate the flow of quality information to the incoming administration, and sustain existing programs.

Gates has also asked for a head count of those among the 50 or so Presidential appointees who would be willing to stay on at least temporarily past the inauguration to assist in the transition.

There are approximately 215 political appointees who would be required to submit their resignations at the turnover of authority to a new administration.

"Dozens" of top Pentagon leaders were tasked with aggressively ensuring a smooth transition, and they come up with innovative and out-of-the-box ideas like inviting the president elect's transition team to meetings.

Yep, feeling better and better all the time.

You know, maybe we do need a change. I'll bet Obama could have come up with inviting the new guys to meetings with just a couple top Pentagon leaders, thereby creating a savings of at least 22 of them.
Just like his campaign, Obama's cabinet will be a testament to his leadership - well organized, efficient, and staffed by people who are qualified and up to the job.
best wishes to whomever wins the presidency; he will certainly need it considering the way the outgoing pres is leaving this great country of his.

I support Obama, but unlike many posts from both sides, remember after today, we are ALL on the same side.
American will soon see that Obama is prepared to be Commander in Chief!
Today, November 4th, 2008, we are the government.  For these hours while the election polls are open  WE are in charge of the direction of our great Country.

In this moment, and only in this voting moment, WE become the law, WE become the supreme authority in our Country.  WE become supreme over every office, Court, Legislature and Executive.

Today, November 4, 2008, WE, the electorate,  become the principal institution of these 50 States United.

This right to vote is the magnificent gift our ancestors gave us -- too often at the price of their blood, sweat and tears.  PLEASE do not let their sacrifice be in vain.

VOTE!
Military to be disbanded - almost immediately!!
Should Obama win, I will do two things.  First, I will buy a gun, and second, I will cling to it and my religion.
Air Force vet for Obama.

Go O-BAM-A!
I don't think theree will be a disbandment of the military That is far too extreme but you will see a more efficient operation and more "stand down". Talking to our enemies will be high priority instead of let's hoot it out.
Mr. President, Israel is going to be attacked by Iran.  Iran is going to be attacked by Turkey.  Turkey maybe attacked by Pakistan.  Pakistan may be attacked by Afganistan.

Do you have any suggestions?
God our supreme commander, will have who we need for this great country we call  ours and we will be stronger for it
Am I the only one at least a little disconcerted by the 215 political appointees?  215 people in positions of at least some concern who were not elected but rather appointed on the basis of political cronyism, really?  Am I alone in my interest as to just what 215 "loyal bushies" have been up to for the last 4-8 years?  And they must be "loyal bushies" because they are political appointments granted position by a leader who has clearly shown that he prefers loyalty to competance, and if they weren't "loyal bushies" they would have been dropped by now.  Now, maybe 215 is about par for the course in terms of the number of political appointments an administration is expected to make, I don't know; but the thought of 215 Monica Goodlings (google her) running around with minimal accountablity and oversight certainly gives at least myself pause.
The economy, the war, how we are viewed by the rest of the world, health care for all, bettering our educational  system, environmental conservation,  developing new energy sources  are the main reasons I voted for Obama.  The deficit, the economy, the war are the reasons we must have to have a president that has the ability to unite to get any of it done.
Patton, u b stupid, super stupid...
It is great to "hear" that the military is on it.
Course they have to "do' It
Briefing goes like this.....your services are no longer required. Thank you for your service but now, DISMISSED! Sleep well at night my children.
vote Obama and we will all lose
I THINK IF OBAMA WINS THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD AS WELL WILL SUFFER TERRIBLELY FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS AND AS ALWAYS WHEN THE DEOCRATS ARE IN CONTROL THE MILITARY WILL BE ALMOST NONEXISTANCE.
That's the spirit.  Let's keep trying to frighten everyone instead of coming together as a united country.
Hope Obama pays attention.  He has a LOT to learn about the military.  They only have a couple of months to educate him!
Obama doesn't need any briefings from them.  Remember, he basically told Petraeus to stick it.  And, he's ending the wars, drawing down the military, no space development, etc.  So, we don't need to worry about that kind of stuff.  If he's elected, I can't wait til the press that "made" him turns on him and starts attacking.  We all know he doesn't take criticism well.
our military personel need to vote and be counted before we announce the winner.
Barack, screw the war, we want our money. Get the troops out and we'll deal with what happens later. I want mine now! We are voting for all that you promised us, more than anyone ever has and we believe in you.
If indeed Obama is to win and become POTUS, I suspecta two front CONOPS will be tough for him to grasp and therefore one will be sacrificed for the other. Any guesses which won gets the axe?
