Pelosi cautious on policy predictions

Posted: Wednesday, November 05, 2008 12:56 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is seeking to limit expectations on what a new Democratic regime will be able to achieve in the 111th Congress.

"We have to choose our priorities" and decide "what is achievable," Pelosi told reporters this morning, adding: "A lot of it is about time." She saied that the current economic conditions and budget deficit "are going to make it harder" to do some big things dear to Democrats, like comprehensive health care reform, but said that smaller, "discrete," initiatives, i.e. SCHIP and stem cell funding, could be done quickly.

In response to a question, she confirmed that she spoke with the president-elect this morning by phone, but said they merely talked about some of the things that they are going to have to talk about in the coming days.

Asked whether Americans can expect a "more left Congress," she repeated the mantra that she has used since obtaining the speaker's gavel two years ago: "The country must be governed from the middle."

She was coy with the question of whether Rahm Emanuel would be going down the Avenue to take the job as Obama's Chief of Staff. "I have not been informed of that decision," she said.

God bless Obama. Nancy P. please don't ruin this for everyone.
Ms. Pelosi will have to throw some red meat at some point in time to the folks that feel they got them there. They will go left at some point and "spread the wealth" as promised. Let's see how high capitol gains taxes and strong union support will effect businesses across this great country of ours.
If the Obama Trauma can feed the multitudes with 3 loaves of bread then possibly I'll give him a second look. Possibly.
She's smart in saying that they are going to keep their goals grounded.  If you aim too high, you will fall flat.
Barack Obama is being hailed as the first "black" president when, in fact, he is half black and half white, so he DOESN'T qualify as the first BLACK president.

Nice try though.
Wow!! Nancy Pelosi with not much to say?  She has done nothing but talk about how wonderful it will be to have BHO in the White House.  Is she preparing us for another "do nothing" Congress under BHO?  I love how suddently everyone is so congenial since BHO won. If he had lost there wuld have been riots, upheavals etc.  It goes to show you how classy Reps. really are.
ROMNEY/GUILIANI in 2012

Romney as VP might have gotten the job done instead of McCain Wildcard pick!!!!!

Then, America will know the real meaning of wanting change.
She's right this is the time for Democrats to NOT over reach, to govern wisely not extremely.
Go Obama! and please "just go" Nancy Pelosi.
Miss Pelosi, May we as Americans point out to you that since you took up the gavel, you have been nothing and done nothing for the people of this great country. Your intelligence that I presumed you had has been everything short of stupidity. I am deeply sorry for we who thought you just might make a differance other than being a witch on a broom. thank you for at least not trying to act like a concerned American.
Yesterday the American people put our Congress on notice. We "The People" expect you to attack all issues that are neccessary in order to preserve our basic rights as though they are achievable. Set your priorities, but never tell us that something is not achievable. Make it work or you too will be gone!
Figures.  Obama said what he needed to get elected and now his cronies are back peddling since they can not accomplish any of the things He promised in his campaign.
Just don't act like kids let lose in a candy store, like in 1993, or else, it 2010 will be like 1994.

People like you are what's wrong with this country.  Have you not noticed that we have a republican president who's been hostile to the dems as soon as they took the majority in 2006, and they did not take over congress, since the dems only had a 1 seat majority in the Senate...with the republicans filibustering in the Senate, and Bush vetoing everything passed by the congress, what would you expect? But to blame it on Pelosi exposes your ignorance of politics.
Just a suggestion, but I was one of those people who donated money and knocked on hundreds of doors, manned telephone banks, worked every spare minute to elect Barak Obama, and we need to curb job outsourcing. I'm a 61 year old engineers and computer programmer. My last THREE jobs were lost to Indian H1-B workers and I'm sick of it. 90% of new engineering hires are Indian H1-B workers. END THE H1-B and L-1 VISAS IMEDIATELY. Likewise, impose punative taxes on companies and their investors that have outsourced jobs and factories. Get our jobs back and you will soon end this recession. I know, this isn't what Bill Gates wants, but did he knock on more than 1000 doors, donate 10% of his paycheck, call hundreds of voters, even plug parking meters for campaign workers? Well I did and this is what I want. This, before any bailout, even before an energy plan, is your first job. Do it!

I think the operative word is President.  Nice try though.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the problem America is in for a bad way now too many rep.haters there need to pull together give Bush 4 more years
Well, the real leader of the Socialist-Democrats speaks up and admits that she and her lap dog (B.O.) can't really do half the things he promised.
Well said BH.  Maybe Pelosi can stop complaining about the Republicans for once and get something accomplished
They need to get rid of Pelosi and Reid!  Hillary Clinton should be the Majority Leader in the Senate and how did Nancy Pelosi get to be Speaker of the House.
Does anyone know how to get rid of Pelosi?
why is it now she wants to take her time. she and him had said they WILL DO IT. what happened to yesterday. this is awfully early to be back peddling
Does anyone know how to get rid of Pelosi?
Pelosi, Reed and Obama. Its really sad what these people will do to our country.  Our economy will be a complete disaster in 2 years.  For those who say it can't get worse watch and see.  The credit disaster was predicated on make credit available to everyone. The Dem's sense of fairness.  Its really sad.
Already the Dems are making excuses about what they expect to accomplish in this next term. So typical when a politician is campaigning to make promises they cannot possibly fulfill! When will America wake up? Oh and by the way, now everybody get ready for less homeland security, higher taxes, and getting nowhere on Wall Street.
Don't screw things up like you did during the first bailout bill run through, Nancy, you nut-job.  The next time the bailout went through there was another 100 billion of BS thrown as pork!
Full Moon: ok, he is not fully African-American; but he is a man of color.  My family were colonists and I am pasty-white proud that Mr. Obama is my President.  He may not look like me, but he thinks like me.

Hooray for the U.S.A. !!!
I still cannot understand the support for mccain and the ignorance of the right...are there really 55 million Americans that are that poorly educated and easily conned? The majority of them come from states that rank in the bottom for income or education. Interesting.
I would just like to say ok Congress, House , Washington DC you have your way Dem'S across the board. lot of talk now fill the shoes we may not forget this time
I agree with JAN from CORONA, CA-Get to work PELOSI, NOW is the time no more excuses! we will be WATCHING! JOHN B. SAINT LOUIS, MO.
Pelosi and Obama really don't like each other ...she will think she runs the country now ... and if she isn't careful is going to hurt Obama and the Dem Party ... we have to keep Pelosi in check
This message is in response to Jean Monagle in Manchester NH. She states that if Barack Obama had lost there would be riots and that the Republicans are classy!!?? She seems to forget what happened at some of McCain's rallies and even last night when he excepted his defeat. What about the cheating and lies we had to deal with in the 2000 and 2004 elections?
Boy does she have a short memory. Typical of the Republican party. She should sit back and relax. The  next 4 years can only be better than the last 8 years were. It's time for everyone to unite not divide. Bush did enough of that.
And the back pedaling begins...In 2006 Pelosi's gang ran on gas prices are too high and we need to get out of Iraq. What happened?  Gas prices doubled and we are still in Iraq.  When are people going to learn that politicians are going to promise the world and deliver Washington, DC?
The issues which confront America today are the gravest of our generation, and must be addressed with an according degree of precision and care.  I am a Progressive Liberal (and proud of it) and even I realize that we cannot simply force through pure Democratic Party ideology without some forms of discussion and concession.  Last night was a definitive win, no doubt, but what we cannot do is repeat the mistakes of the Republicans of the last 8 years by downplaying and marginalizing the sentiments of the minority opinion.  And take note, Obama won the electoral vote hands down, but the popular vote was much closer.  Even a low estimate would place McCain as having won 40% of the popular vote, and that is a substantial section of the country whose opinions and positions are every bit as meaningful and relevant as ours were in 2000/4.  As Barack would put it, he is not the President of Red America or Blue America but of the United States of America, and the last 8 years have been a painful reminder of the damage caused when a leader disregards the will and interests of such a substantial portion of his/her electorate.  Power is like wine, it should sipped and savored, not guzzled recklessly, and it is easy to get drunk off of if you do not mind how much you've had.  So, Democrats, go vote, reform, enact change, please; just do so responsibly.
Perhaps Ms Pelosi will disappear. She wants to tax my hard earned retirement funds so people in this country illegally can have a better life. Maybe she should move out of the country. Watch out America, big time government and taxes are heade our way!!
Hopefully President elect Obama has studied history and knows that even if you have great ideals/ ideas as did President Carter that all cannot be accomplishe in one term and that he must choose wisely ...additionally he's been left with a very large mess by this present administration...
SPINOUT, WAY TO SPLIT HAIRS, HOPE IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER......

JEAN, REPUBS ARE VERY CLASSY...WHEN THEIR NOT DESTROYING OUR CONSTITUTION AND PERSONAL FREEDOMS.  REAL CLASSY CAMPAIGN, AT LEAST THE REAL MCCAIN CAME OUT TO END IT LAST NIGHT (NO SARCASM ON THAT ONE, VERY CLASSY ON HIS PART).

TOM-LET'S NOT FORGET HOW THE TABLE IS SET FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA, SEN. MCCAIN WOULD HAVE WALKED INTO THE SAME MESS, DON'T KID YOURSELF.

Pres-Elect Obama will use his political capital wisely and over time.  It will be his and Pelosi's challenge to keep the extreme left (like Frank wanting to cut the military budget 25%)from attempting to ram their pet projects through in the first couple of years.  The priorities will be shoring up the economy, and assessment of two wars, neither which will end with complete troop withdrawal anytime soon.  It will be surprising if a national health care plan can even be developed and implemented while the foregoing two issues are active.

Yes Jan in Corona CA! Right on. Make it work Ms. Pelosi or you too shall be gone!
She has more control and power then Obama! Right now she is just sitting back and taking it in stride. In stride right over to the LEFT SIDE! Did America not realize that the Dems already had a hold over Bush? Hold on America, EVERYTHING is about to get more expensive. Business's will not be able to keep up and will pass it along to us.
Obama is also back peddling...did you hear him say, "...maybe we cannot get this done in one year...or even one term..."this congress will be the downfall of America....even "The One" (yeah, right) won't be able to reign these idiots in.
In the euphoria of defeating the republicans the democratic establishment should also remember that with a govern from the center message obama also defeated the democratic establishment this year.  In short the status quo of BOTH parties was defeated by ana rguement the nation needs to be governed from the center.

If democrats wish to retain their new found electoral map they would do well to remember that fact.

... USA --- R.I.P. ... Our past is far greater than our future!

Not surprised.  Just like Obama's speech yesterday (Change might take one year or one term) back peddling all over the place.  I hope Obama does well, this country needs it.  Ask Nancy what happened to this Congress's 100 day plan?  This "do nothing Congress" is just as much to blame as Bush.  Remember that about 2 years ago consumer confidence was high and the Stock Market was at its highest level ever.  I believe this democratic Congress got voted in about that time.
Now we're going to see where the real problems are. If they can't get it done, hopefully the President elect Obama will say exactly that and get who he needs elected in 2/4 years. The problem will be if it takes 4 he might not get another chance.
The real joke here is:

NANCY PELOSI IS THE MODERATE BETWEEN THE TWO!  LOL

Refill that Prozac prescription you libs, you're going to need it once the Obamagasm wears off.
Right wing fascists are certainly poor losers.
It's not very hard to read these comments and pick out the Republican Lemmings!
tHIS IS ONE OF THE PROBLEMS OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS REID, AND PELOSI, TALK OUT OF TWO SIDES OF THERE MOUTHS....sHE TALKS ABOUT ANOTHER STIMULUS PAKAGE, MEANS MORE MONEY FROM CHINA, THE FIRST STIMULUS IS BAILING OUT WALL STREET AND CONTINUE THE BONOUS FOR THE EXECUTIVES BECAUSE NO ONE IS GOING TO MONITOR THE FUNDS GIVEN TO THEM...THEY MAY BE TOP EXECUTIVES BUT THERE PART OF THIS MESS AND MY SHARE OF THE BAIL OUT IS NOT FOR BONOUS....PELOSI HAS DONE NOTHING ALONG WITH REID.....dONT THROW OUS BONES WHILE YOU KEEP THE MEAT, WE DONT WANT HANDOUTS WE ALL WANT TO TAKE CARE OF OUR FAMILIES AND GRAND KIDS AND NOT DEPEND ON YOUR HANDOUTS BECAUSE YOU FAILED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND WANT TO MAKE YOUR SELVES LOOK GOOD.......GEE GIVES OUS SOME OF YOUR MILLIONS. NOW THAT WOULD BE A GREAT JESTURE.......SICK OF POLITICS AT ITS BEST....sCREW THE AMERICAN PEOPLE......wELL AT ELECTION TIME WILL GET TO YOU TO....
