Emanuel officially named chief of staff

President-elect Obama has officially named Rep. Rahm Emanuel his chief of staff. Emanuel, who is the chairman of the Democratic Caucus, is the fourth-ranking member of the U.S. House. He previously worked in the White House under Bill Clinton and has served four terms in Congress.

Here are the statements from Obama and Emanuel:

Statement from President-elect Barack Obama:
“I am pleased to announce that my good friend, Congressman Rahm Emanuel, has agreed to serve as my White House chief of staff. I announce this appointment first because the Chief of Staff is central to the ability of a President and Administration to accomplish an agenda.  And no one I know is better at getting things done than Rahm Emanuel.

“During his seven years in the Clinton White House, Rahm was the point man on some of the most difficult issues, from the passage of landmark anti-crime legislation to the expansion of health care coverage for children. In just six years in Congress, he has risen to leadership, helping to craft myriad important pieces of legislation and guide them to passage. In between, Rahm spent several years in the private sector, where he worked on large and complicated financial transactions.  That experience, combined with his service on the committees on Ways and Means and Banking, have given Rahm deep insights into the challenging economic issues that will be front and center for our Administration. Though Rahm understands how to get things done in Washington, he still looks at the world from the perspective of his neighbors and constituents on the Northwest Side of Chicago, who work long and hard, and ask only that their government stand on their side and honor their values. The son of an Israeli immigrant, Rahm shares a passionate love for this country, and has devoted much of his life to its cause.

“His decision to accept this position is a wonderful reflection of that commitment, for it is not easy to give up the significant position he holds today as chair of the House Democratic conference.  The post he has accepted also will require more time away from Amy, and their children, Zach, Ilana and Leah, which I know is painful and difficult.

“I appreciate his friendship.  And I, and all Americans, should be grateful that Rahm is once again answering his country’s call,” said President-elect Barack Obama.

Statement from Congressman Rahm Emanuel:
“I know what a privilege it is to serve in the White House, and am humbled by the responsibility we owe the American people.  I’m leaving a job I love to join your White House for one simple reason - like the record amount of voters who cast their ballot over the last month, I want to do everything I can to help deliver the change America needs. We have work to do, and Tuesday Americans sent Washington a clear message -- get the job done.

“I have loved the time I spent in the House, both the successes and the setbacks, and I am grateful to the people of the Fifth Congressional district who sent me to work on their behalf. I was proud to serve on a leadership team with Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn. They have taught me invaluable lessons -- even a few lessons in humility, believe it or not.

“I want to say a special word about my Republican colleagues, who serve with dignity, decency and a deep sense of patriotism.  We often disagree, but I respect their motives.  Now is a time for unity, and Mr. President-elect, I will do everything in my power to help you stitch together the frayed fabric of our politics, and help summon Americans of both parties to unite in common purpose.

“It has been almost 150 years since Americans turned to a proud son of Illinois as their President.  Early in his first term, Abraham Lincoln said, “The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew.”

“Today, once again, our country is piled high with difficulty, and Americans have put their trust in President-elect Barack Obama and Vice-President-elect Joe Biden to think and act anew.  And Mr. President-elect, I promise that your White House will do everything in our power to rise to the occasion,” said Congressman Rahm Emanuel.

hip hip hoo-ray!!!!
Go Barack Go!  Already starting to "Getter done!"
I hope that everyone is overcoming their CDD - Campaign Deficit Disorder.  Isn't it strange how tranquil life has become for us Democrats now that we're not sweating out every new poll and waiting to hear what clueless new thing the Wasilla Hillbilly has to said?  I'm so enjoying my CDD as I watch Barack getting his new administration up and running.

I am so glad that Rahm Emanuel decided to take the Chief of Staff job.  He will be so much more impressive than that deadbeat "Randy" Andy Card.

Yes We Did!
Beautiful Statements. He's the right guy for the job. Change is Coming, Just Hold On!!
He'll be terrific and thankfully Obama is cool and tough enough to restrain him.  It'll give Scarborough something to get a rash about.  What he (Joe S.) doesn't understand yet is how strong Obama is going to be.  Obama is not a weak dolt like "W".
Excellent choice!  By the way, the electoral map doesn't show that Obama will win another electoral vote in Nebraska because they'll split their votes.  It should be Obama plus one (365 total) and take one away from McCain.
Want to share a sign I saw over the last weekend at one of the Milwaukee field offices for GOTV... with my fellow bloggers...

'Rosa sat so that Obama could run'
'Obama ran so that our children can soar!'

Yes we Can... Yes we DID!!! Still reveling in the victory!!

Well, so Rahm could not turn down Barack's offer. I recall that Biden said he did not want the VP slot but could not turn it down when Barack asked him to serve. He did not want to miss a chance to be a part of a history.

I suspect that few serious pols and public servants will turn Barack down. The mandate we have given him provides all the additional clout he needs beyond his own personal charisma. This is an important time for the country and everyone knows it.

The next 70+days will be an interesting prelude to the real deal coming in Jan.

Yes We Can!
Ed in TX, you are right, President-elect Obama is the real deal.  We are so fortunate to have someone with his gifts and graces to lead us in these times.  The campaign was an awakening for so many of us; it brought us back to our senses as to who we are and what is expected of us as Americans.  I am so excited about being an involved American and urge everyone to look at this as only the beginning of rebuilding our country.

One brick at a time, one calloused hand at a time - yes we can!

Thanks to Rahm Emanuel for once again answering his country's call.  How could anyone say no to the chance to work in what is going to be a defining era for America?
Liberals are hysterical. They think something was finished last Tuesday. Nope. It's just starting libbies! You are now the kings and (mostly) queens of cr*p hill. Get to work while the rest of us treat your guy like you treated President Bush. It's going to be fun, very much looking forward to it.
Two kinds of polititians from Chicago. Ones that have been indicted, and ones that will be indicted.
I think I just heard the "Change" engine crank up... here it comes america.  If you're not ready for change... get the he!! out of the way
This is great news of our nation today! Emanuel is a solid pick, and will want to move policy forward quickly. As for the GOP! They need to get a life, or borrow one!
US Attny Patrick Fitzgerald will be getting promoted soon by Obama's AG. Don't know who he is? Look it up. He's quite the personality in Illinois politics. But he's sort of in the way now, and the best way to get rid of him will be to just promote him.
Feisty Redhead Roselle, there's a longer version that says:

Rosa sat, so Martin could walk…
Martin walked, so Obama could run…
Obama is running, so our children can FLY!
This is such wonderful news - I feel President Obama will surrond himself with the most brillant and inspiring people as he is himself - its a new day - Yes we Can
Maybe now Joe S. will shut up! Whata jerk he is.
My heart is full and I am so proud of President-Elect Barack Obama. Rahm Emmanuel is a person who can really help. So far so good.

I was very disappointed in Chris Wallace on the Daily Show last evening. He praised Barack Obama and then spoiled it by finishing with "I hope he does well, but I know that he won't".  How mean-spirited.
This is such wonderful news - I feel President Obama will surrond himself with the most brillant and inspiring people as he is himself - its a new day - Yes we Can
Yes we can and yes we did!!! This feel so good!!!
I am so glad that Obama has kept his word of change from the current GOP insolation specialist that work for President Bush and delivered the change we voted for to work to better the country.

Off to a great first appoinment President-Elect Obama!
The announcement of Rahm as Barack's Chief of Staff is a wonderful way to start his administration. Looking forward in the coming days to many more appointments that are as spot-on as this one.
I really hope that Joe Wertzelwhatever doesn't ever find out that Rahm Emanuel is "the son of an Israeli immigrant." Better for him ignore what Stephen tells us is the well known liberal bias of reality. If his gut tells him that a vote for Obama was a vote for the death of Israel, he should believe it, regardless of what the factinistas have to say!
Rahm Emmanuel has been a heck of a congressman and has really represented those of us in his district well.  I am somewhat sad to see him leave his post, but am excited as I know he will be able to a lot more good as Obama's chief staff.  I really feel that Obama is going to put together a team of only the most capable individuals, Democrat and Republican alike.  Can anyone else remember being this excited for the future 2 days after an election?
Good choice! A smart, hard working & passionate man. Soon to be President Obama, Vice President Biden, and now Chief of Staff Emanuel. It's a new day!!
Rahm Emanuel chief job will be to keep the House and Senate Democrats in line. Unlike Obama, these Democrats do owe the Lobbyists, Major Corporations and special interest groups for their campaign funds.

Obama, once again, shows us he does plan to bring change to Capitol Hill.
President-Elect Obama is constructing a team that knows how to get things done in a no non-sense type of way. He knows that we are in tough times and the American people are looking for solutions.
As an independent McCain voter I have to give props to Obama organization for lining things up.  No doubt we will see a steady pace of staff announcements.

If Obama keeps this up and lives up to the bipartisanship promises I will have no problem for voting for him in 2012.

Maybe Obama fever is hitting me late but, I actually have some hope (it is contagious!)

Good luck to Mr. Emanuel.
That third paragraph from Rahm's statement is genius and a sure indicator of why Obama will govern effectively.

His reaching out to Republicans respectfully allows them to work with Democrats without fear of losing face or retribution as we saw via Bush's "my way or the highway" approach.

I believe the American public, if they see that Democrats are fair and reasonable in their treatment of Republicans, will encourage them to work together and hold them accountable if they don't.

As an indicator, watch how people react to two very opposite reactions from John Boehner (who decried the CoS selection) and Lindsey Graham who lauded it. I'll bet Boehner gets heat because more bickering is the LAST thing Americans want, especially when the party in power is being respectful.
Even before the news was confirmed, House Republican Leader John Boehner issued a statement criticizing the choice.

"This is an ironic choice for a president-elect who has promised to change Washington, make politics more civil, and govern from the center," Boehner said of Emmanuel.

---------------------------------------------------

I am stunned that Rep. Boehner has the nerve to criticize the civility and ability to "govern from the center" of anyone else.

This is just the first sign that, although a majority of voters voted for change, the Republican leadership doesn't think that applies to being hypocritical...
As i read the statements of both President-elect Obama and Mr. Emanuel I found my eyes getting a bit moist.  I fully understand that in Mr. Emanuel our next President has the Chief of Staff he needs.  However, I also detect that the sacrifice of family life for both is hard to accept.  This suggests that we have the right individuals in the right place at so critical a moment yet we must pray for them for all that they reluctantly have to sacrifice for the greater cause. Thank you Mr. Emanuel!
i am SO EXCITED!  what an amazing start...i keep pinching myself to make sure this is real.
It will be refreshing to have intelligence and people who are truly concerned about this nation and its citizens, instead of what we had for eight years.

Out goes the oligarchy, in comes democracy.
They are still counting absentee and provisional ballots in Nebraska.
We can now put the notion that Barack Obama is a MUSLIM to bed. What Muslim in the world would choose a Jew to be his Chief Of Staff????
Looks like my district be having a special election coming up. I wonder who the candidates for congress will be.
Take it to the next level President Elect. We've got work to be done.

HUMMMMMMMMMM RAHM IS GOING TO BE PART OF TH NEXT HOLACAUST THAT OBAMA HAS PLANNED EVEN THE JEW IS DRINKING THE KOOL AID

TEN MORE DAYS OF THE DECLINE IN STOCK MARKET IS END OF AMERICA==SMART PEOPLE ARE TAKING THEIR MONEY AND RUNNING FROM THE MESSIAH=THE IDIOT, EVEN THE ILLEGAL MEXICANS ARE GOING TO MEXICO LOOING FOR WORK=HOPE YOU LIBS LOSE EVERYTHING I WORKED AND SAVED LIKE MOST REPUBS, SO WE WILL SURVIVE LMAO
Great choice. Good luck President-elect Obama from Australia.
Great choice - tough, smart, and dedicated.
I love it! The original McNasty of Politics heading the Obama team! And we thought this was going to be a get along change? Well, it will be, you go along or you will get a long looking over and pay the price. Please don't let this happen to Americans President Elect Obama.
Rejoice, rejoice.
Oh come, oh come Emanuel!
Give them Hell.
I am so proud to have exercised my rights as a US citizen, albeit living outside the country,to vote for Obama.  I know that he can be non-partisan and bring all Americans together to create a better society.  I have to add that Palin should disappear back to the tundra---not killing animals or mining of course, but taking some leadership with that group of children she has.  Eve
We should be very proud as Americans, not that we elected the first black man, but rather that we elected possibly the most remarkable, capable, majestic man possible to lead us in the infancy of this century. This man of remarkable caliber has the ability to incite people to love and come together and to be inspired.

He has an amazing quality to bring hope out of the closet where it has been hiding for years. He has not only a brilliant mind, but the heart of a lion and the soul of humanity, and a twinkle in his eyes of a new father.

The world is watching with a sigh of relief. God bless him and keep him safe.

When does RE get rid of Pelosi & Reid?  Them dogs won't hunt.  Leave them in the shade under the porch with plenty of clean cool water & fresh old dog formula dog food they can gum & swallow.  The ain't had teeth for years.  Take 'em to the veterinary to get wormed & to cure the mange.
Bring them into the mud room when it gets cool to keep them warm.  Let 'em sleep.  They won't hunt.  Yes, they weren't much good when they had teeth.  If you took them of the leash, they'd run under the porch & stay there.  They always was 'fraid a guns & was too fat to run.  That's the reason Uncle Fred had them fixed.  You don't want to breed worthless egg sucking dogs like them.
'Rosa sat so that Obama could run'
'Obama ran so that our children can soar!'
Feisty Redhead - the sign was a short version...

Don't know if you've seen it, but the long version brought tears to my eyes (and I'm a white middled aged mom who grew up in the 60's - my earliest memories are JFK, MLK and RFK... and the terrible days of darkness...)

Rosa sat
So Martin could walk

Martin walked
So Barack could run

Barack ran
So our children could FLY!

We have a chance to work to make a whole new world since November 4!!

Wonderful! Not let's get this show on the road!  A productive, postive road!  YES WE CAN!
Rahm Emanuel will know how to get Obama's agenda through the Congress. And he will act anew and think anew as Lincoln encouraged.

Obama has consistently chosen the right people, from his campaign staff to his first act in choosing Joe Biden to his selection of Emanuel.

The road ahead is rough, the results necessary, and the resolve unwavering. Yes we can.
I'm a big Obama/Biden supporter, but I'm not happy with this choice.

I hope Obama can still transfer some of that "No Drama" mindset to the White House and Washington politics. I'm not heartened by the choice.
I'm just a little old man in the backwoods of Western Australia, but I too shed a tear when Barak was named as the winner.  What great hope it brings to the world. Thank you MSN for your web sites that allow me not to miss a thing!
