.. to vote? In his latest blog, NBC's Luke Russert breaks down the youth vote from Tuesday's election and finds good news for the Democratic Party.

"In swing states, the youth turnout greatly helped Barack Obama beat John McCain," he writes. "Latino youth went for Obama 76%-19%, showing that Democrats have firmly entrenched themselves with the nation's fastest-growing voting bloc. And Obama's margin of victory in the 18-29 demographic was astronomical (66%-32%), and suggests that the Millennial generation is convinced by the policies and direction of the Democratic Party."

I am so gratified to see that this new young generation reminds me so much of the "We" generation of which I am a proud member from 30 years ago.  I am glad to see the new kids on the block coming out to vote in large numbers for Barack.

However it is wrong to say any one group brought about this wonderful win.  It was a coalition of young and old, white, black, brown and yellow, rich and poor, college educated and not college educated.

We have to revel in the new Rainbow Coalition that has brought about this More Perfect Union!

Yes We Did!
Luke, although you were wrong in some of your previous articles, do hope, you will not realize that not only the youth but every American put the survival of our country first.
You are young, but feel someday you will fill your fathers shoes. And what a goal that is.
The GOP's demographic time bomb is starting to blow up in their faces.  Ignoring the values and desires of young people and trying to base their support on the prejudices and fears of the older generation might have worked for a while, but it is a losing strategy in the long term.  Turning against latinos and showing really ugly bigotry against immigrants was also suicidal for the party.  The GOP is left with a demographic base of older white people in rural areas, and that is never going to be a large enough group to win elections
This is why the Democrats don't care about protecting the boarder. More illegals entering the country mean more votes for the Democrats. First order of business for the Dems will be to build a 8-lane one-way highway going from Mexico to Texas.
Our youth want:

no more war
no more bickering
a chance to make a buck or to attend college
for some in this country to become more tolerant
freedom to choose their way of life
more kindness towards one another
elimination of corruption in business and government
no more divisiveness or fear/hate monegering
a better reputation around the world
security - economically and physcially

It all sounds good to me. Why can't we adults give it to them. Why can't we adults give it to ourselves.
Eric, Salinas, CA - I am so gratified to see that this new young generation reminds me so much of the "We" generation of which I am a proud member from 30 years ago.

Spelling error. That's should be "Me". Voting yourself a raise puts you in that group.
While it is gratifying to see such a diversity of voters coming together to move this country, the passage of Prop 8 in CA, and similar Gay-Marriage bans in other states proves that we still have a long way to go.  Lets not forget that.

75 Days Until Inauguration Day!

Hillary voters who went with Obama really made the difference and are owed loyalty to all of us. He could not, and I repeat, not have won without us. Do not forget that Team Obama. Our voices must be heard and have input in any future plans!
I hope the 'Young and the Restless' don't mind paying for all the stuff they want. Doing so will soon make them 'Old and Decrepit'.

Robert Gibbs' complete embarrassment of Sean Hannity was the best audition tape I've ever seen. The intelligence and efficiency with which his campaign was run had a lot to do with Obama's success; his staffers had their ears to the ground much more than any other campaign and showed a genuine skill for listening to the people and giving them what they want and need. That's EXACTLY the type of people who should be filling out our executive branch. I'm very pleased to see people who ran Obama's campaign staying on to help run his White House. MATT

Matt, He ask Granholm to participate. Seen what she has done to the State of Michigan lately? Ask anyone from Michigan about their thoughts on her leaving to go work with Obama. She has destroyed this state and industry with her tax increases.

How do people this stupid manage to boot the computer up?  Seriously?  If they are 'illegal', how do they manage to vote?  PS.  That 8-lane highway already exists in San Diego.  (I've never crossed over in Texas; but there is probably one there, as well.)  Also, border.  A boarder is someone who pays for a room that shares common areas.  We should protect boarders, too.  It's called 'rent control'.

Bigotry, oppression, divisiveness these are all OLD school ideas.  They have NO place in the new direction we plan to take our country.  We are restoring our place as the World Leader and we will not do that with your narrow minded view of others.  Make room at the table for EVERY person who wants to work hard and take care of our brothers and sisters who cannot take care of themselves.  Leave the world a better place than when you got here.  If you can't contribute to the dialogue, turn off the computer and let Rush tell you how to think.  In the meantime, grow up.

I can't understand why anyone thinks we can "protect" the border.  (Note the correct spelling)  Even if we could build the Berlin wall along the length of the border with Mexico, people would start coming on boats to the coasts.  What are we going to do, build a physical wall around the entire country?  Employ the majority of the US population as armed border/coast guards?  It is not the ease of getting here that is drawing illegal immigrants, because it is not easy.  If you think it is, I suggest you try it.

Yes, we need to control immigration, but we do that by severely punishing the business that employ them.  And that means you'll pay a lot more for food and many other goods and services.  And by severely, I mean jail time for owners/executives of the business.  Massively punitive fines, such as two or three years profits.  That will stop uncontrolled immigration, not walls and guns on the borders.
The 'Young and the Restless' quickly become the 'Old and Decrepit' when they are made to pay of all the goodies Obama wnats to give away.
I am so glad that this time Americans saw beyond fear and all the lies, and realized that the only thing remaining when you have nothing else left is HOPE! I still can't believe that there are people who are complaining about Obama winning this election. Like it or not, and regardless of what your beliefs are, Barack Obama is the President-Elect and will be the 44th President of the United States of America. So whether you voted for him or not, let us unite, and stand behind our next president. Instead of fear and being afraid, let us HOPE for the best and work towards putting our country first and doing what's best for our country. We are all - most importantly - Americans...

God bless the USA!
I waited in line for 2 1/2 hours in Indiana to vote early. I felt like the old guy. I am 40
Purely annecdotal but when I went to vote the number of young people waiting in line to vote was amazing. My precinct is a racialy mixed one and there were young people, both White and Black, waiting in line for two hours to vote. And the best thing was they were energised about it. It was a delight to see.

DEMs don't equal evil and REP don't equal evil either. Both love the USA. It's a new day brother. As for the borders, that isn't our President-elect's stand. Read more at barackobama.com and educate yourself on his positions or wait and see what he does. Contact your rep and tell him your feelings.  just my 10 cents.
It isn't a matter of Democrats not wanting to protect the border it is about treating those who came here already equitably. Our buisness practices are what created the work that draws them here and as such it is our responsibility to treat people fairly who responded to that draw. Protecting the Border is more about creating an atmosphere where the US is less a Target and more an inspiration, something the administration the past 8 years has failed to understand. It will take a younger, more diverse voting population to bring that multi cultural attitude to fruition, the one that foster global cooperation and not confrontation.
Actually, if you read "first read", you will see another article that indicatese that if you remove the youth vote it only affected outcome in two states. Reporting the percentage of youth that is for Obama only indicates that Obama was important to the youth not the other way around.  Sorry but statistics should be scrutinized for actual meaning.
America! Love it or leave it.
Hey, Welcome Wagon, it's not like they're not being used by REPUBLICAN small business owners (and not-so-small businesses) to depress wages!  Stick THAT in your wagon!

That Highway is already bring pu into place, dubbed as the "NAFTA superhighway"

Though, your facts are off slightly (as I'm sure you know) so let me educate you.

#1) The so-called NAFTA superhighway will not stop in Texas, but connect Mexico to Canada through texas.

#2) this so-called NAFTA superhighway was put into place by the GWB Administration, and is currently embroiled in controversy due to the government pushing people outta their houses for the development of this highway.

#3) Even if illegals are coming into our country (which we all know they are) THEY CAN'T VOTE.

DOLT!
"America! Love it or leave it. "

That is the attitude that gave us warrantless wire taps, indefinate detention without trial of U.S. Citizens, Torture by American forces, and our diminished reputation around the world.

America Love it and Fix It.

H Dean:

I don't think a change in attitude and a little more tolerance and a little more community will make our youth old and decrepit. And that is what they want the most.
Does civility cost anything? Will it cost those who come on here and bitch or complain to become a little more tolerant and civil cost them anything? I don't think so. Except for maybe a change in their daily schedule where they would have to learn to forego the Rush Limbaugh radio show.
Please put Luke as the moderator on Meet The Press.  Tom Brokaw is just aweful.  Let Luke get "on the job" training.
I find it ironic that the youth vote turned out to elect Obama, who was the only candidate conducting himself like an adult throughout the election!  No eye rolling, no big sighs, no silly name-calling, no petulance to speak of-- apparently the American people are ready for a little more adult supervision in our lives!
The youth vote might not have been "necessary" but their enthusiasm, work ethics, volunteerism, and plain idealism was necessary for the election and will be necessary for completing the "yes we can" thought. Yes we can have healthcare, yes we can have equitable taxation, yes we can have fair elections. See the entire range of possible yes we cans on the Rachel Maddow website.
Thanks to them from a grey hair!!
Way to go young voters of America! Not only did our nation hear you, but the rest of the world heard you. The change that you helped vote for will soon result in economic progress. Now let's get this nation moving forward!
Thanks Luke for pointing out what I have been saying for months now with my own children.  "You have no right to complain unless you vote."
Luke, those numbers also explain the three important things you stated... In swing states, the youth turnout greatly helped Barack Obama beat John McCain. Latino youth went for Obama 76%-19%, showing that Democrats have firmly entrenched themselves with the nation's fastest-growing voting bloc. And Obama's margin of victory in the 18-29 demographic was astronomical (66%-32%), and suggests that the Millennial generation is convinced by the policies and direction of the Democratic Party.

Notwithstanding, the obvious that what the youth vote; is with their participation gives them the mandate for their future, their descendants future, and those of remnants from the sixes. We all need your smart choices.
My old bones were re-invigorated with the energies springing from those young volunteers as we knocked on doors. I would some times hold back my tears as I saw what  I fought for years come to fruition again. I'm so glad I have lived to let those I spoke to know how history can be changed; and was able to wow and encourage them.

Donna, it’s good to see back!

Prop. 8 in California, and are now credited with writing in discrimination into that state's constitution, literally taking away a fundamental right from a minority group.  To them I say, Shame on You! You of all people should know how we gays feel about this!  How dare you!  You should put your heads down in shame for placing this stain on our country! Yes, you!
========================================================
Being a descendant of slaves, a minority group, then and now, stealthy racism and intolerance still exists. However, you can not  equate fire b0ombings in a school (Brown v Board of Education) being bulldozed  with fire hoses, rocks bottles and whatever would incite  violent race  riots, being the last hired one and the first one fired, and still being subjugated based on ones skin color.
I don’t know what your complexion is; yet I know your rants indicate a serious emotional and behavioral problem. You cannot; and I repeat simply cannot equate your pain physically or mentally with my pain!
Those people who voted no to Prop. 8 in California are not Obama; neither me nor all other Blacks. FYI: there are many Black gays, even in my family. So I say to you; your painful rants DO NOT exemplify what African Americans since 1492 have endured.
My advice to you, if you want Prop. 8 in California so badly, then instead of trying o identify with my pain, as well as other Blacks; then stop screaming baseless parallels and identify the real and current issues.
If you want to take your vote back, when you knew the Obama/Biden position before you voted then you are being selfishly and vindicatory plus; saying yes to…
• Endless wars and a possible draft
• A warrant less wiretap program
• Indefinite detention of terrorist suspects ( truly torture)
• No sensible solutions to foreign Diplomacy
• No protection of abortion rights even in cases of rape and incest
• The Second Amendment
• Essential public health programs being threaten under earmarks as excessively pork laden
• More mortgage plan  and credit crises.
• More Bush's tax cuts for the very wealthy and nothing for the middle class and the poor
• Falsehoods about drilling; thereby disturbing the eco-system
Most importantly, your precious cause, are you aware McCain says gay marriage should be allowed. So go ahead, Pat, vote; against yourself next time.

BTW: • Pat, another point, that vote was based on Evangelist votes and not viewed as a "civil rights issue" to them. Yes Pat, there are Black Evangelists. The good news for you Pat is these xenophobic people, Black Evangelist, included are in decline.
The young are also easily brainwashed...as 52% of our population seem to be.  CA...you told us what the youth want - and it is already what they have; have them study Canada, the socialist system has them supercharged too - they had a 39% voter turnout for their election a few weeks ago; one businessman I talk to from there stated he made alot more money last year - and didn't see a dime of it; all went to taxes to help their Universal Healthcare system.  Really promotes energized, ambitious people doesn't it.  Most Canadians have always been jealous of what we had - and I say had because you lovely Dems don't have the iniative to look deeper beyond the promises to the facts.  You all have taken flowery words and glib speach for gospel - Saul Alinsky couldn't be prouder of his party.  Try reading his book (if you dare) and see if you aren't exactly the puppets he portrayed you would be.  How sad - Democrat used to be an offshoot of Democracy - now it reads just like Socialism in the dictionary.   Do you really think the illegals didn't vote?? How naive you are. With Acorn helping them? And the next step..they get to have drivers licenses...legal or not...lovely...how many deaths have already been caused by illegals...and how many billions of dollars have been spent on them?  Try fact finding..you'll find we have spent more on illegals/inc.health care,etc..than we have on the war everyone seems to feel is senseless in the name of freedom...you all make me embarassed of my country right now.
You ever wonder why so many of your Democratic negative comments toward Repubs make it and very few rebuttals....you don't even realize how our Freedom of Speech is controlled by the same mass media that has brainwashed you all so well...since most of my comments never make on these Democratic blogs I'll be surprised to see if this one does......
