More Lieberman-McConnell talks

Posted: Friday, November 07, 2008 2:08 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC's Ken Strickland
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman have been talking, according to McConnell's spokesman. While the spokesman couldn't give details of the conversation, McConnell and other Senate Republican leaders have previously said they'd welcome Lieberman into their caucus. An aide to Lieberman also confirmed the conversation with McConnell.

Talks with McConnell apparently came in the wake of Lieberman's discussions yesterday with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. In that session, according to the Lieberman aide, Reid wanted Lieberman to give up his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Governmental Affairs Committee for a lesser position.  Lieberman, who was part of the commission that established the panel in 2005 (previously called the Governmental Affairs), considered the proposal "unacceptable" the aide said.

Lieberman also cited that it was his membership within the caucus that allowed Democrats to hold their one-seat majority in the Senate for the past two years.  And though he voted against Democrats on Iraq and other national security issues, Lieberman had voted with the party more than some Democrats.

In a written statement yesterday, Reid said, "While I understand that Sen. Lieberman has voted with Democrats a majority of the time, his comments and actions have raised serious concerns among many in our caucus."

Reid was obviously referring to Lieberman's criticism of then-Democratic nominee Obama and Lieberman's campaign appearances for the opponent, McCain.

Lieberman's "preference is to stay in the Democratic caucus," the aide said, but the Connecticut senator told Reid he'd "would explore other options."

Because neither conversation yielded any resolution, the talks will continue, all sides agreed.

Let him go.  He was never a committed DEM anyway.
If there's a group that would be more unhappy with Lieberman in caucus than the Democrats, it would have to be the Republicans.  Sure, he sat obediently off to the side like McCains puppy, but aside from neocon policy where else is he in agreement with the GOP?
He finds the proposal "unacceptable". He is hardly in a position to dictate terms. Lieberman backed the wrong horse, he should be FORCED  to accept the consequences of his actions.
Lieberman must go!!  If he wants to stay in the caucus for some unexplainable reason, then let him.  But after the inflammatory comments he made about our new commander-in-chief, he has absolutely no right to hold on to his Homeland Security Committee chair.  Sen. Debbie Stabenow is the chair of the Democratic Steering Committee that will make the final, formal decision on this.  Call her, email her, call your own Senator, email your own Senator- let your voice be heard on this important issue!  Lieberman must go!!
It ain't your 'votes' you dolt!

You may have even survived supporting McCain;

But you patent tearing down of, and delivery of mis-information on Obama, has provided everyone on this side of the aisle with a laser like focus on your true position of "self before party". It's not that we didn't know it before, but you acted against most of your own stated principals in supporting McCain while tearing down Obama.

Forget the chairmanships; let's see just how many Republicans will actually support a known traitor to even his own positions!
It's truly amazing to me that we have elected a Democrat as our next President and Senator Lieberman never lifted a finger for him. The same Senator Lieberman who was a democratic vice presidential candidate.

{Thanks donna for the shout out to all of us. We're all in this together}. But I have to say, there are sure some lovely passionate nice intelligent posters here I have to say.}

Just about everyone actually. And I hope everyone gets a chance this weekend to REALLY CELEBRATE!!!! I know I'm going to.
Liberman knows a good thing when he sees it. Republicans will get back the majority in 2010 after the country sees what imcompetents they've elected this year.
What Lieberman fails to accept is that Politics is pretty much a 'what have you done for me lately?" business.  Most recently, Lieberman had his head so far up McCain's a@@ checking 'bearings' or whatever, that he negated ANY long term memory on the side of the Dems.  Also, we will never forget the RNC convention speech, which pretty much summed up his political future.  When you are on the wrong side of your constituency (meaning did you ever once check in with your true blues and ask their opinion?) and the wrong side of history, you really don't get a second chance to make a 'first impression' with your new President.  And even if he is too mature to take you out to the wood shed, Reid doesn't have to take the high road.  You rolled the proverbial dice and you lost.  If I were you, I would remain graceful in public and attempt to regroup whatever's left of your political dignity and pray like hell CT is more forgiving.  The rest of the country is pretty much over you.  Good night and Good luck.
Reid is that dumb that he'd let Lieberman leave the caucus? He's that dumb? I guess he is that dumb.
I respect Lieberman because it takes guts to turn against something that has helped you so much in the past. Blind loyalty is never a good idea.  However, he has made his decision and should have expected some backlash.  Furthermore, it's not that he supported McCain, but how he attacked Obama.
Joe Lieberman - the last moderate in the Democratic party.
dumber and dumbest- I think Reid would be smart to send lieberman across the aisle and let him see how well he is treated by the repubs. This man is a traitor, I wish we could hang him, just not enough laws to protect us from politicians who run rough shod over the American people. But Lieberman we can
get rid of. I think he has only two more years that he will be able to show his ugly face to the world.
Thank God
marty
Lieberman's days are numbered.  Hopefully, one of his options he's considering is retiring from the senate all together!

IMHO, Joe S/B 'exploring' ALL his options because they just keep dwindling. He just proved that he is NOT a Democrat by his actions during the McCain campaign. He has previously proven that he is NOT a GOPer because of his past voting record on social issues.

He burnt too many bridges to keep his H S Committee Chairmanship and he sure as hell is not going to get any senior committee positions if and when the GOP ever regains relevancy again.

Poor Joe, he 'chose unwisely and is now finding out he is damned by his own words and proven untrustworthy; as Niccolo Machiavelli pointed out centuries ago, neither side trusts a turncoat. Given the election results basically sweeping the GOP out of the Northeast, I expect that Joe will find himself retired by the Massachusetts voters.
DUMP THE CHUMP !!

This guy is WORTHLESS !!

He shouldn't hold any chairmanships in the new Senate

Al Gore's BIGGEST MISTAKE !!
Lieberman is DOA in 2012, so it's probably not going to matter. Reid would be wise not to burn the bridges before the Franken-Coleman, Martin-Chambliss, Begich-Stevens situations get resolved. They might just need him on some of the domestic issues. Don't know if it'll matter what he calls himself, I don't think either side can count his votes, he's a moderate centralist or spineless opportunist, depending on who you talk to. (I think it's the latter)
i don't think we should reward the bad by the bad.Let Joe stay in the democratic caucus and don't remove him from the homeland and security comedy.
Joe Lieberman - Isreal never sent a finer man to Congress.

Goodby, Joe. You wont be missed.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.
I will not be Joe the traitor again.

May I please move my desk out of the corner?
Lieberman doesn't believe in representative government. He was elected to represent the people of his state WHETHER OR NOT he personally agrees with them.  He is so egotistical that he thinks it is all about him and whatever his beliefs of the day happen to be. He apparently believes the Senate should be the equivalent of the House of Lords.
Joe Lieberman should go caucus with his friends the Republicans...then his constituents should vote him out of office!  He should not be trying to dictate to the Democratic Party after all he said against them during the campaign.  Let him go....good riddence!
The dems in CT are debating a resolution to censure Joe Lieberman.  Stay tuned.

Sorry the Republicans won't be in a position of power and will lose more ground for the next ten years because me.
Elections have consequences, Joe, and so does supporting and advocating for a morally bankrupt party that has stripped this nation of its economic security, broken its military, committed torture, and spied on its own people. The chairmanship is not yours to own. The caucaus will survive without you. The Republican party has done more to damage this country than Bin Laden could dream of and you supported them. Good riddence.
Why haven't the Connecticut voters recalled Lieberman?
It's up to those he represents to either support or recall him. Lieberman works for Connecticut, not for Harry Reid.
Dump him!

**Fade to Black**

SCENE.

Lieberman made his choices.   He spoke at the Republican convention and campaigned for McCain . Alas,  so far at aleast , he has not had the guts to convert to the Republican party .  He wants it both ways.    The Dems  must step up to the plate,  show they are the party of "morals"  and say  ,  " No thanks, Joe " .
the Democratic Party did not support Liberman, when he was up for re election, i guess pary loyalty is a one way street depending upon whose Ox is being gored (no pun intended )
We are about to learn if Reid has grown a vertabre during the election season.
It isn't just the reprehensible comments he made about Obama.  It is that for the past 2 years he has been holding his seat over the Dem leaderships heads.  Pushing them around on every policy, in order for them to keep their majority jobs.  I wouldn't go as far as to kick him out of the caucus.  The fact of the matter is that he pledged to his constituents in CT to caucus with them Dems.  That should be on his hands if he decides to turn his back on them.  But Reid should inform him that he has lost his seniority as a Dem and won't be a chair on any committee.   He has the next 4 years therefore to redeem himself to the Dems and his constituents in CT.  There has to be consequences for what he has done.  Losing a Dem Primary-then switching to independent and then Speaking lies about President Obama.

If that is what keeps Dems from having 60 seats so be it.  At least they will not be tugged around by Lieberman anymore.  Besides, even at 60 seats there will always be Dems who threaten defect to make power plays and get concessions.
Ba-Bye! Cut him loose! He made his decision and yes, we needed him then, but we don't need him now. He wants to help the GOP so badly - go for it. that shouldn't stop him from voting with the Dems if he is TRULY an Independent, right? Or maybe that is just  more hot air.  Considering he was honored to be part of the 2004 ticket, to see him dissing the 2008 ticket and campaigning for the GOP ticket, I would say he has made his bed, now lie in it.
Let the two faced traitor go and good ridance. He fits in perfectly with the republicans
Lieberman expected to be McCain's V.P. pick, but was betrayed when McCain chose Palin.  Then McCain thought Joe could deliver the Jewish vote, but thanks to some grandkids who helped their elders realize Obama would support their issues, Lieberman came up short again for the Repubs. I guess Lieberman expected a cabinet position in McCain's administration. Well... sorry again. Need we remind you that Lieberman is only an independent because he lost the 2006 primary as a Democrat and running as an independent was the only way to get back to Washington.  Ironically, Obama endorsed him at a time when he needed it because Lieberman was unpopular for supporting Bush on the Iraq ware. And guess what?  Conn. voters responded to Obama's support, even though the Democrat party endorsed his opponent Lamont. But how soon we forget. Obama's no fool and, while I believe he's a man capable of forgiveness, he's not going to forgot, nor should the Democrats trust this nation's homeland security to someone more concerned with protecting his own interests than the American people.

It is time to retire Joe, and save what political values you have left. Which by the way. Are not many at all, because Joe sold his soul to the highest political bidder. Go home Joe!
Lieberman has shown he's not a team player, so what value is he to the Dem caucus? Why should the Dems trust him with the HS chairmanship?

Send him over to the GOP and let him be McConnell's problem. He won't be any more consistent with the GOP than with the Dems. I'm actually in favor of more true independents, but there's no reason they should get majority caucus benefits if they don't reliably support the majority positions.
He turned on the Dems in his own state, thumbing his nose at their choice of Lamont and was elected with the support of Republican voters. He supported John McCain, actively campaigning for and with him. He entered Zell Miller territory by speaking at the RNC. It's time the loose cannon got pushed off the deck. He's become a political pariah. The angry Republican voters I've heard are ready to dump McCain - you think they will embrace Lieberman!? Toss that puppy to the wolves!
I can forgive Joe for campaigning for a friend. I can forgive even the attacks on Obama in that effort. I can even forgive speaking at the repub convention in that effort.

However, Campaigning for down-ballot repubs crossed WAY over the line.

I say pull the chairmanship, appoint him to Homeland Security Secretary and, as this new job requires, have him execute Obama's agenda as it pertains to things here at home. A little hawkishness is NOT uncalled for in this position, but will be well under the control of the new administration, which he would not be in his current position.
He must go, he stole the nominations from Lemont, in a form of independent candidate, when he lost democratic votes, and overall he is republican who dress as a democrat. We do not need betrayer. He does every dirty trick to stay with a side that has a power a time, he stab in back, he hasn't uphold USA CONSTITUTIONS, rather he uphold ISRALE CONSTITUTIONS, he is a agent. We do not need our political system to be poison anymore.
Let me ask a question here.

Who gives a s>&} what Joe Lieberman does or does not do?  Why does anyone even care?  To the Democrats, he's a traitor.  To the Republicans, he's a Benedict Arnold that cannot be trusted; just someone they can use and then throw away if needed.

He's become a politician without a Party.  The Republicans don't trust him on domestic policy votes.  They MAY be able to count on him on some level on foreign affairs.  The Democrats don't trust him due to his comments about the new Commander-In-Chief.  And he disagrees with them on foreign policy matters.

I mean, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS WOULD WANT THIS GUY????  Other than McCain; HAD he been elected.

You think the people in Conn, would have EVER voted for this guy, had they know what he was going to become???   A Psudo-Republican??  Please!!!!

And exploring his options???  With the Republicans???  What a laugh!!!!  I can imagine what they'll say.

"Sure Joe, we'll let ya caucus with us.  But ya gots ta toe the line, pal.  Here.  Kiss my ring."

Whatever happens, he's going to be stripped of all his prestige and power.  Just depends on if its the Democrats, or Republicans doing it.

He's history.  Sorry Conn!!!  But you reap what you sow.
