On Veterans Day

Posted: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 1:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

Here are excerpts of the speeches from President Bush and Vice President Cheney on Veterans Day and the statement from President-elect Obama:

PRESIDENT BUSH (at the Intrepid in NY):
Veterans Day has a long and solemn history.  The event that inspired it took place 90 years ago today, in a small railway car in a French forest.  November the 11th, 1918, the Allied Powers and Germany signed an armistice that ended one of the bloodiest wars the world had ever witnessed.  By the time that day arrived, World War I had raged for more than four years, and more than 8 million soldiers had given their lives.  But on the 11th hour of the 11th day of that 11th month, the guns fell silent -- and peace began to return to Europe.

To commemorate the war's end, President Woodrow Wilson declared that November the 11th should be remembered as Armistice Day -- a holiday to honor the brave sacrifices of the American soldiers who defended democracy and freedom overseas.  Today, we know it as Veterans Day -- a day when we celebrate and thank and honor every man and woman who have served in our Armed Forces.

These noble Americans are our sons and daughters.  They are our fathers and mothers.  They are our family and they are our friends.  They leave home to do the work of patriots -- and they lead lives of quiet dignity when they return.  Today we send a clear message to all who have worn the uniform:  Thank you for your courage, thank you for your sacrifice, and thank you for standing up when your nation needed you most.

PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA:
"As we mark Veterans Day, all Americans are united in honoring the extraordinary service and selfless sacrifice of our nation's veterans.  Our veterans are part of an unbroken line of heroes who have defended the American people and stood up for American values - from the beaches of Normandy to the battles in East Asia; from the deserts of Kuwait to the skies above Kosovo; from the cities of Iraq to the mountains of Afghanistan. Since 9/11, a new generation of American heroes has borne a heavy load in facing down the threats of the 21st century, and their families have been asked to bear the painful absence of a loved one. These Americans are the best and bravest among us, and they are all in our thoughts and prayers.

"On this Veterans Day, let us rededicate ourselves to keep a sacred trust with all who have worn the uniform of the United States of America: that America will serve you as well as you have served your country. As your next Commander-in-Chief, I promise to work every single day to keep that sacred trust with all who have served. May God bless our veterans, and may God bless the United States of America," said President-elect Barack Obama.

VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY (at Arlington National Cemetery):
There is no mystery behind the endurance and the success of American liberty.  It is because in every generation, from the Revolutionary period to this very hour, brave Americans have stepped forward and served honorably in the Armed Forces of the United States.  Every one of them deserves the thanks and the admiration of our entire country.

Military service demands a special kind of sacrifice.  The places where you live and serve, the risk you face, the people you deal with every day -- all of these are usually decided by someone else.  For the time you spend in uniform, the interests of the nation must always come first.  And those duties are shared by family members who make many sacrifices of their own, face separation during deployments and sometimes bear extreme and permanent loss.

Military service brings rewards as well.  There is the pride of developing one’s character and becoming a leader, serving a cause far greater than any self interest and knowing that our nation’s cause is the hope of the world.  Every man and woman who wears America’s uniform is part of a long, unbroken line of achievement and honor.  No single military power in history has done greater good, shown greater courage, liberated more people, or upheld higher standards of decency and valor than the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

Thank you to all veterans for the great sacrifice you give or have given to us.  Thank you and  God Bless you all.
What would Bush know about serving his country?  He was in the National Guard when we needed him the most - in the Vietnam War.  He's a fraud.
Someone needs to slap Cheney upside his head and tell him to "Shut up and sit down." He should not be talking about our fallen soliders....over 4,000 of them would still be alive if it wasn't for him. He should be tried as a war criminal.
Cheney needs to sit down now.  Reading his speech seems as phony and disingenuous as I perceive him to be.  Let no one forget that the man has made MILLIONS while over 4,000 US soldiers have lost their lives - all of it based on lies!  Stringing him up by his nuts is too kind an act.  I hope we find 'actionable intelligence' on his abuses of power and he rots in a dark hole in some third world country - denied of the freedom he so easily banters about.  If it doesn't happen on earth - it will surely happen in his 'after life reality'.  The only G-d he prays to has $ signs in his name.
I thank all of our veterens who have sacrifice their lives for the safety of this country. At this time, a serious conversation needs to take place about homeless vets as well as the lack of mental health services they deserve in terms of ptsd treatment.
I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to all veterinarians today.  God bless you all.
WAR---uh, Good God!---what is it good for?
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!
(Just ask Bush and Cheney, who tried so hard to get out of one!)
Never in the military, but my Dad was a Navy man for 28 years, my father-in-law a Marine for 30, and my brother a Marine for 8.  I have learned that these people and millions like them are the daily guardians of my freedoms.  Without them, America dies.

I despise people who think that a pullout from Iraq would mean that those brave 4000 died in vain.  I just despise them.  NO SOLIDER DIES IN VAIN -- EVER!!  They stand on that wall in peacetime and in war and keep the barbarians away from us.

It is time to bring these valiant people home from Iraq.  They've done their duty.  It's time for us to do ours and insist that they come home ASAP.  16 months??  How about 16 weeks?

And no, I don't give a darn if Iraq slides into a civil war or a sectarian war or who runs the darn place.  It's their place, not ours.  Our soldiers place is here at home wiht their family and friends.  There better be a damn big parade for these wonderful folks when it is finally over!!
Soldiers are tried and convicted when they commit crimes, it is high time to try and convict the dunce in chief, shoot you in the face cheney and you go to war with what ya got don rumsfield for committing war crimes. PERIOD
Maybe Bush should explain to Obama what the Armed Forces do, where they are located, and what they look like.
Thanks to all our vets.
This morning early I put the homemade cards for my
88 year old dad on the table, I thought of all the men and women who has fought for our country over the years, tears when I think of the loss of my younger brother in Viet Nam. This is what Americans do.
I am not impressed with either President Bush or Dick
Cheney, I know if they really cared about our service men and women they would not have sent them to Iraq for oil and money in the form of no bid contracts.
So Thank you to all our service men and women everywhere. Be Safe and know you are the lifes blood of our great nation.

marty
Thanks to our Vets and their families for everything they do and have done for our nation.

Heartfelt thanks to all our Vets out there...job well done.
Jan 20th Can't Come Soon Enough

Agreed - for 2012
When will will honor all veterans.  I do not see anyone being interviewd from the tuskegee airmen.
Spend a minute to reflect on our soldiers, spend 43 cents to send one a letter of thanks,
spend this day knowing that we are moving forward instead of backward,
spend a moment to thank all those voters who made a difference this year.
We have a hard road ahead, spend a moment on how you could make a difference in our future.
Our country needs all the help it can get from its people.
We can make a difference if we try.
Over and OUT OF HERE!
Didn't Cheney get several deferrments during the great crusade against communism in Vietnam? Too bad he is one of those flag waving faux patriots
Someone needs to slap Cheney upside his head and tell him to "Shut up and sit down." He should not be talking about our fallen soliders....over 4,000 of them would still be alive if it wasn't for him. He should be tried as a war criminal.

I'm sure glad the next VP had the intelligence to not have voted for the Iraq war.
"regarding the last eight years, and the service of our brave men and women in Iraq-  I'm George W Bush, and I approve their deaths"
The idea of Barack Obama at the tomb of the unknown makes me want to throw up.
Cheney:  Military service brings rewards as well.  There is the pride of developing one’s character and becoming a leader, serving a cause far greater than any self interest and knowing that our nation’s cause is the hope of the world.

How would he know anything about military service?  He never served.  Too bad he didn't serve.  Perhaps he would then understand what "having character" is all about.  He would have been wise to actually take some of his own advice, since Cheney seems to feel his personal causes are more important than the causes of our country.
I recommnend everyone read, "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose. Stephen puts you on those beaches, facing those cliffs, as a 17 year old kid.

To the Vietnam Vets. Thank You! Welcome Home!
Who's taking on the job of teaching Obama how to salute? Many in the armed forces are learning a new salute, just for Barack.
Jan 20 and Clara..I as well agree with you...when I saw Dick Cheney in front of unknown soldiers tombs to lay the wreath..I thought you liar you did not car about those you sent into that wicked war...you don't care about those who died...I heard it in that fake voice...cannot wait for the 20th either!

To all the Vets and our Serving men and women who are now in the Forces...I salute you each and every day.  The fighting men and women will always be loved by their fellow Americans!!!!

WILL YOU MCCAIN SUPPORTERS JUST GET THE F--- OVER IT?!  I mean, for 8 years you all were the ones clammoring that we should "support our President at a time of war."  Did you actually mean that, or were they just empty words and fear-induced patriotisim.  You all post here claiming that we Obama supporters are mean and negative (clearly none of you have been over at the Fake Noise Crapper site {FOX News}), yet here's a man who, like it or not, WILL BE YOUR NEXT COMMANDER IN CHIEF paying his respects for those who've fallen, and you can't even contain your anger to give him that much.  Yet you have no problem heaping praise on the two men who are directly responsible for sending 4000+ men and women to their deaths so their cronies at Halliburton and Blackwater can get some sweetheart defense and security deals.

FACE IT!  YOUR GUY LOST, AMERICA WON!  DEAL WITH IT!

70 Days Until Inauguration Day!

Thank you to all our veterans! On this day, Americans heard from Cheney and Bush. They used great words, but with no meaning for them at all. For Bush-Cheney, all they see is green for the mega profits that they have gained. The blood of our military citizens is on their hands, and they can never wash it off. The reckless use of our armed forces was a crime against humanity, and has left a generation of young people without their limbs. It is shocking to hear Bush-Cheney talk about honor, country, sacrifice, duty, and bravery. The only duty these two have shown is to "special interest" groups. The only country they believe in is one where the rich get richer, and poor become poorer. They view our military citizens "expendible" to their own economic greed. When our military citizens come home wounded. Bush-Cheney have only one message for them. They are on their own, and must become "do it yourselfers." Even if they have one limb or none, the Bush-Cheney message is a simple one. Greed is good, and how well our military citizens got it for them, is all that matters. Bush-Cheney please go home, because you have caused enough damage already! Time to move forward America!!
I felt like crying when I watched a draft dodging war criminal place the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider.
I see we have a few "Boo-Birds" who want to use this occasion to get in a dig at President-elect Obama.  I'm just guessing, but I'd be willing to bet that most of them are faux patriots who've never had to zip a buddy into a body bag, but are impressed by a lapel pin.

Me?  Two tours in Vietnam, infantry squad leader by choice, field medic by necessity.  Happy Vets day to those who've served with honor.
Barack Obama won a fair, decisive, hard-fought campaign to be the 45th President of the United States. He will be the new commander-in-chief and deserves the respect of all Americans, whether they voted for him or not.
Step up - all of you who accused those against the Iraq conflict as being anti-American or unpatriotic. Now it's time for all of you to show your true colors.
This great country now has a great leader - one who will not lightly send our brave men and women into combat for political purposes.
God Bless America...
God Bless President-elect Barack Obama...
Cheney speaking at Arlington Cemetery? He is the reason our sons and daughters, wives and husbands are buried there. Who is the genius who thought Cheney would be the best person to honor our brave dead soldiers?
Bless all our Veterans - today and everyday.
Happy Veteran’s Day.   This is a day to offer our  thanks to those who have put their lives on the line to fight for the many liberties that we citizens enjoy.  The men and women from all the conflicts that have been fought over the last century or so have served with bravery and honor, and have done so by risking their lives.  I imagine there are millions of veterans, having served the frequent conflicts of the 20thm and now the 21st century.

I suppose there might be some veterans left from World War I, but they would be quite old, I should think.  Many more from World War II.  Their sacrifice and bravery in large part is what made our country what it is today.  We owe them our very existence, in some sense.  We have also veterans from the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the invasion of Panama, Granada, Kosovo and no doubt other smaller skirmishes, some perhaps without names.  And of course, our nation is churning out a great many more veterans as we fight two wars, in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if there was a passage of time where there were no new veterans.  Where our nation, and those sharing the planet with us, opted to resolve our differences through negotiation, and we fought no wars for a generation or two or three.  What if 100 years passed and we did not fight a war?  Would there be any veterans left?  Daresay their care at places like Walter Reed would have to improve quite a lot for any current veterans to live another 100 years.

I have nothing against veterans.  Absolutely not.  I would just like to see their numbers shrink, but instead, the veteran population  is growing all the time.  Alas, in the process, we are also increasing the numbers we must remember on Memorial Day.  Sadly, we do not even have a special day for those that will spend the rest of their life in some sort of damaged state as a result of the wars we have fought.  In some sense, those that left a part of themselves on the battlefield are the ones that truly need our help, our appreciation, and our admiration, perhaps more so than any group of veterans.  They deserve a day to call their own.  Those that have given a  limb, or two, or have lost  the use of their limbs, their eyes, their ears, or those who have suffered such anguish that their thoughts have turned against them.  These folks need a day where we consider their sacrifice.  Hero Appreciation Day.  Victims of Foreign Wars.  Can’t even think of a good name.

The United States military is the finest in the world.  When motivated, and fighting a just war, we are pretty much undefeated.  When, however, we fight wars that are the result of leaders who have misunderstood their responsibility, the results are a mixed bag.  I am hopeful we can end, soon, the ongoing creation of new veterans, and that the future leaders of this country will understand, once and for all, that the enormous might of the United States military carries with it the enormous responsibility of using only when there is no other option.  We have become cavalier in our decisions to go to war.  Here’s hoping we can go 100 years before fighting, so that we can fully appreciate the veterans we already have, without adding to their numbers.

To those that have served, thank you.  Help our leaders understand why your sacrifice should not be offered in haste.

This day is not about Bush, Obama or any other politician it is about our veterans who died bravly in conflicts all over the world. It is about sacrafice for freedom and country. God Bless all of them and thier families for that sacrafice.
RELLE,
The Flying squadron at Joint Forces AB, Balad IRAQ was named in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen at least 3 years ago.
How's that for recognition.
