HRC urges stimulus with Bush

Posted: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 3:26 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Ken Strickland
In stressing the need for an additional economic stimulus package, Sen. Hillary Clinton took her request directly to President Bush today in New York.

"I met with the president briefly today," Clinton said on a conference call with reporters, referring to a Veterans Day event on the Intrepid Air, Sea & Space Museum. "I asked him to work with Congressional leadership so we could get a stimulus package and gave him a letter both making this request and outlining what I thought we should be doing.”

In the letter, she proposes a stimulus package which includes previous proposals from Democrats including money for roads projects, increases in unemployment insurance and more food assistance. Clinton asked Bush to work with Congressional leaders to pass a bill next week when members return for a lame-duck session. (It's unclear if any package will pass at this point.)

On the conference call, she also supported more financial help for the auto industry but insisted that the aid "not be unconditional money," hinting at possible changes that could effect labor unions. Clinton said the industry "should be willing to take a hard look at salaried and hourly employees, so that we know that we're getting the maximum return, maybe with changes in work rules."

On other political issues, there was this...

On Joe Lieberman’s future: "We're [Senate Democrats] going to be addressing that next week. And I'll have more to say about it once we're back in session and have had a chance to consult and consider the options."

Has Obama asked HRC to ‘spearhead’ any issues in the next Congress?
"We've had an ongoing discussion going back many weeks now about our mutual commitment to the kind of changes we both campaigned on. And I have made it very clear that I am more than ready and willing to assist as a partner in the Senate to get the work done."

Will Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff be good for New York’s interest?
After addressing the question with a broad answer that Obama understands the needs of big cities, the reporter asked again about Emanuel.

"Do you think that Rahm's going to be accessible to New Yorkers," a New York reporter asked.

"Rahm Emanuel?" Clinton asked with a smile in her voice. "He's going to be accessible to me."

What on earth is THAT supposed to mean?

Go get em' Hillary! Happy to see every Democrat jumping out of the gate to get something done!....Sure beats all the whining and in-fighting coming from Republicans.
Grab your butt with both hands and hold on, America, because here it comes.

Neocons:  start blaming Obama for miserable state of economy - between him and Clinton - Jeez!

Smart move, especially considering that AIG is living fat dumb and happy on the bailout package that was passed for the banks.

>>>On Joe Lieberman’s future: "We're [Senate Democrats] going to be addressing that next week. And I'll have more to say about it once we're back in session and have had a chance to consult and consider the options."

Obama and the Democrats owe Leiberman nothing.  Let him caucus with them if they wish, but he doesn't deserve to chair any committees.  He made his bed with the GOP.  If he wishes to lie in it with them, then so be it.  The shouldn't be kissing his ass just to get an extra vote in the senate.

I've heard everything from Secretary of State to Supreme Court for her.  Personally, I think she could do the most good just where she is.  Just my opinion.

Now that's just plain scary.

70 Days Until Inauguration Day!

Pajama Pundit,

He was a huge Hil supporter.  :)

That's my girl!!!  Go get 'em Hillary!!!!!!!  Skip all the middle men...and get s**t done!  We need you more than anyone!

God...she should have been President! Americans are so gullible.
What worries me more is the headline to this article!!!  Hil Urges STIMULUS with BUSH... LMAO!!
I think Rham will be able to handle Hillary. Barack did. And Rahm is the "bad cop" to Barack's "good cop". I'm not real worried.
President Bush is a very simple individual, and has very simple goals. He will be very reluctant to do anything more for his nation, because he already has what he wants. Economically, his oil investments have paid big dividends. His "special interest" friends have done very well over the past 8 years. On forign policy, he still has our troops in Iraq, and very little in Afganistan. Politically, President Bush has just one simple message. He will do nothing more for America, until he gets one more prize for his economic friends. Socially, President Bush has done more to divide our nation than any President has done in the last 35 years. Be careful when making deals with this political devil, because one may end up very burned.  Bush is a President, who is never what he seems, and always what he wants others to think he really is. This President is very emotionally conflicted, and cries out for clueless recognition from others. This individual is still very politically dangerous, and is plotting all the time. That is fact!!

can you say "power play"?
Why do the democrats want Bush to do something in the eleventh hour of his term?  If they had such great ideas why don't they want to wait until Obama takes over?  That way they can get the credit.  Are they afraid their ideas won't work and are looking to be able to blame Bush for their incompetence?
Thank you JESUS for giving us a new direction with some SMART, resonable people running the show for once.

"

It could be that it's an emergency? "Country First," even?

I haven't worked since June, and I don't want them to hang around making small talk until Jan 20th.
I didn't think it would happen this fast, but the Democrats are starting the in-fighting already.
"HRC URGES STIMULUS WITH BUSH"

Who exactly is going to be reaching across the aisle to accomplish this?
Doesn't HRC have staffers to stimulate her?
Hillary, remember, YOU DID NOT WIN THE PRESIDENCY, BARACK OBAMA DID!
Eric, Salinas, CA,

I think the Dems want this stimulus package to go on Bush's bill rather than Obama's. It would be included in the deficit under Bush. Don't know for sure; just a guess. You know, to keep the Repubs from being able to say..."There he goes, spending like a liberal." (which they will do anyhow)
Eric in Salinas - They are pushing for doing something now because the American people and American businesses are going to get hammered in the 70 days or so between now and inauguration day.  Think about it.. if the economy still goes down.. do you think anyone will spend anything during the holidays? What is typically the financial quarter that keeps alot of companies in business?  If they dont try and stop the bleeding now, and get the economy at least stable, the economy is going to be alot worse next year.
We got some real fighters in the dem party who will beat the crap out of the 'NEW' traditionalists that now make up the RNC.
Put up your dukes REPUBS, we ain't sittin' back anymore, we want our country back from you back slapping pinheads who have ruind an economy, the military and our standing in the world.
You can repeat Rush and gang all you want, we laugh everyday at your lemming like talking points.
Must be hard to think on your own, gotta have someone do it for you.
Go Sarah, we dems just love you sooooooo much, you are the face of the RNC now, better keep all the clothes you can, you gotta party to take over and we will help you do it next primary election.
Operation reverse chaos, lets get started now my dem, indie and moderate friends.
lets drive the last nails into th box the RNC has created for itself.
This President is very emotionally conflicted, and cries out for clueless recognition from others. This individual is still very politically dangerous, and is plotting all the time. That is fact!!
Rock, Janesville, Wisconsin (Sent Tuesday, November 11, 2008 3:5

Rock, you make Bush sound like the male counterpart to Sarah Palin.  Does that mean we've had 8 years of Palin rule in men's clothing?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Why do the democrats want Bush to do something in the eleventh hour of his term?  If they had such great ideas why don't they want to wait until Obama takes over?  That way they can get the credit.  Are they afraid their ideas won't work and are looking to be able to blame Bush for their incompetence?

Eric, Salinas, CA

Because they are putting the nations interest ahead of politics. Some things are more important than scoring political points. If they can't get it done under Bush, they'll get it done in late January.
PJ Party- Rahm Emmanuel was in the Clinton White House.

Eric- Chrysler and GM will be out of business in a week if they don't get assistance. You may live in CA but there are over half a million REAL people that will lose their jobs by the end of the year. Real as in middle class.  Bush helped create this mess and he needs to step up to the plate and do his part until he leaves office.

teopa

No it's simple, Rahm was a Sr. policy adviser for 8 years in the Clinton administration. The statement is simply a reflection of the fact that Rahm got his start with Bill Clinton, and of course he would be accessible to Hillary.
Pajama Pundit,

He was a huge Hil supporter.  :)

No he wasn't, he and all the Democratic House members in leadership roles stayed neutral in the Democratic primary. Most people suspected that Rahm supported Obama, but only Rahm (and Obama) know for sure.
<Why do the democrats want Bush to do something in the eleventh hour of his term?  If they had such great ideas why don't they want to wait until Obama takes over?  That way they can get the credit.  Are they afraid their ideas won't work and are looking to be able to blame Bush for their incompetence? >

Eric--maybe the Dems are more interested in the results than in taking the credit? You know, doing what can be done to lessen the coming recession's depth, salvaging jobs, etc...
Really, it's no coincidence that she would say something like that. It's very obvious why he was hired as COS....
Steven - Rahm stayed neutral during the primaries and the fact that he didn't throw his support behind HRC at that time was seen by many pundits as him putting his support behind President-elect Obama.
Eric - it's because Bush is still president for the next 2 plus months - and the problem with the car industry will not wait until Obama gets into office..if they wait until then, GMC, for one, will go out of business.  Your politics are showing...How about using some of that energy to support our new President instead of doing the same old, same old BS that your party is famous for spewing out when they lose at anything?
Glad to see the Democrats working - not worrying about who gets the credit - just get it done!!!

Barack - Hilliary - Joe - Rahm - Harry - Nancy - Get it done --
Turn it down GWB. Hillary's not running the show. YOU are. Her act is older than the hills.
Hippocrats want Bush to do these things so it will not be on them and Obama. It will be more pile on Bush. Hopefully he can see what they are doing, trying to manipulate this for their gain if it works saying the forced it, or counting on America's stupidity once again if it fails to say more of the same from Bush. Can you say Fannie Mae Freddie Mac?
Sime of you people think Obama is the BEST thing to happen to this Country BUT my gut tell's me your gonna find out Obama is NOT who he pretended he was!!
South of Mason Dixon changing to Blue due to transplants from states that got so screwed up that they lived in, that they left. Now they are trying to do the same thing to the once Red states. Think about where you live now and where you lived a few years ago. Don't turn great states into the screwed up mess for states you moved out of. Look in the mirror.
"Rahm Emanuel?" Clinton asked with a smile in her voice. "He's going to be accessible to me."

Two people with pointy elbows; this could be fun. I am sure they know each other quite well and will work with each other just as well. Yes, the days of congressional inactivity have almost come to an end, my friends, and it is my hope the remaining Republicans do not get in the way or they will regret it.

The American public will not tolerate obstruction to plan to fix the economy so the Republicans had bettered have solid data and not just discredited Republican fiscal philosophy when they object. It won't work this time.

Odd, that sounded a bit like John McCain!
Democratic leaders are scared stiff that Obama will screw up after he takes over and the blame game will have to go on longer than usual. Ride the Bush train as long as we can till we are accountable. Maybe they can ride 4 years blaming Bush? Sounds like the thing kids do. Blame others. Grow up and bring forth those great ideas under the Bo and Joe Administration. Get full credit.
HRC and Rahm Emanuel go way back and are very good friends..... Of course he will be there for her just as she has been there for him.
I better not hear anymore about crapping on Hillary. I said it once and I will say it again, Obama could not and would not have won without us Hillary supporters voting for him. Could not have happened and DON'T FORGET IT! It made me sick to have to vote for him but it was better than McCain. You want a fight during the Obama term, keep up that smart talk and there will be, I promise, Division in the Ranks. You all know too well we voted for Obama reluctantly.
To Amber in Orlando.  President Elect spoke to the president on this issue yesterday.

BO is the President Elect.  Don't get it twisted.
Just what we need, magically we are going to make more money.  Isn't that by default a tax on everyone.  Tighten the belt folks, otherwise our children will be paying our depts for a very...  very long time.
If you think that Hillary is speaking out on the need for action regarding the economic crises before having discussed her thoughts and ideas with Obama you are dreaming. Hillary can play a big role in helping Obama lead this country out of the many crises that the GWB administration has gotten us into. And understand, she can do so as a compatriot of the new Presdient, or as a power grabbing maverick who attempts to trump the President. If as the former President Obama can help make her, and if as the latter President Obama can also break her. And she knows it.
to Rock; you are forgetting Carter who has the nerve to criticize president Bush who has more class than Clinton or Carter and definately than Obama(the new Camelot) what a joke!!
I agree with Kathy, Charlotte. Our voices can and will be heard. Obama does not need to think he won this thing with his people alone. We voted for him knowing we prefered Hillary. She had better get a power position or we will ditch the party. Women are strong and capable of high level leadership in the Obama administration. Secretary of State should be a woman!
I honestly believe President-elect Obama, and other members of congress (both republican and democrat) know that this stimulus NEEDS to be done in this eleventh hour of Bushs' term.  Even Bush knows that things are drastic and regardless of who or what is to blame smart people know that sooner is better than later!

Eric, yes you hit the nail on the head and anyone reading this knows that's exactly what they are up to.
At this ppoint GWB should play 4-corners... just like Barack did in his last few months.. The economy is a lose - lose at the moment..and we have already learned what rushing into bailouts is worth.. As a part of the 5% of taxpayers I don't want to pay one more dime to bailout anyone at this point.. We're supporting the federal gov, the middle class, the poor, Wall Street, greedy exec's, inefficient businesses and pretty soon we won't be able to spend in the desperate retail sector, hire anyone to work, go out to eat, pay for college, pay our mortgages.  And when that happens the economy will really FAIL!!!
Leave it up to Obama to fix it ..he has all the answers RIGHT??
Let's pull those racing straps tightly down one more time and lets all hang on, becuase its going to be a bumpy ride. Bogity, Bogity, Bogity, Let's go broke boy's. The rich is only for themselves. The middle income families are the ones who keep the good ol' USA going and now there's talks about the auto industry, sure get rid of the high power managers, ceos, vps, they're the ones reeping the benefits, not the good people on the lines trying to make a living. Lets get all the millions of dollars back from the idiots of the WALL STREET BIG WIGS. Have them sell everything they ripped off the rest of us good, hard working folks for and have them give us back the millions of dollars they got from their bennefit package. Come on, not one of these clowns are worth the millions they claim they'er worth. That should cut a little of the reccesion that we're in and then put them all in jail for being liars and cheats. Send Bush and Cheney with them, seeing they made big profits from the big oil surge we had.
No wonder other countries laugh at us now, we just let idots get away with ripping us normal folks off and send this great country to hell.
That's all I have to say about that.
Personally I think they all are in a fog! I vote for Willie Nelson he is a real human and knows whats best for America!
People should start commenting on the questions reporters ask. We are not well served by a lot of the press. How stupid to ask whether Emmanual will be accessible to New Yorkers! That's not the job of Chief of Staff yet it is reprinted on MSNBC.com as if it were actually relevant. C'mon, it's time to start raising the level of discourse.
Right onEric of Salinas...The Dems want Bush to push for a last minuteStimulus package at the end of his term. That way if it fails , they have another built in thing to blame Bush on. Just like this past 700 Billion  package. the Dems could have passed it on their own , but Barney Franks comittee all voted against it when their votes could have passed it. No they wanted the Reps to join in that way they could have the Republicans to blame. The Democrate's are a caniving bunch always figueing a way to blames Republicans.
