Schumer: 60 'possible but unlikely'

From NBC's Abby Livingston
In his mission to crush a GOP filibuster, DSCC Chairman Chuck Schumer feels the chance of 60 Democratic senators this cycle is “possible, but unlikely.”

Briefing reporters this afternoon, the New York senator gave the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s outlook on the three outstanding Senate races: Minnesota, Alaska and Georgia.

With the race in Minnesota between Norm Coleman and Al Franken in a post-election dead heat, Schumer opened the news conference by directing his ire to the politics of the recount.  Invoking a nightmare familiar to political journalists of cycles past, he said, “Minnesota is the one state where we really see the same kind of effort to intimidate.” He added,  “Democrats sort of let that happen in 2000 in Florida. We’re not going let that happen again.”

Proving that annoyance with the mainstream media can be bipartisan, Schumer also railed against the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal for “overheated rhetoric” and “fabricated” claims over the recount.

Schumer views the Georgia runoff between Saxby Chambliss and Jim Martin as part of the original DSCC plan. “We were able to hold an incumbent in a red state below 50% and get into a runoff, which was always our goal for the first round of balloting.” He added that the DSCC is about to put up ads supporting Jim Martin. As for President-elect Obama stumping for the Georgia Democrat, Schumer played coy, saying, “You’ll have to stay tuned. I’m not going roll out our strategy.”

Because Mark Begich has taken the lead over incumbent Ted Stevens in the Alaska race, Schumer said that he's "cautiously optimistic" about the situation as it stands.

Schumer refused to address his future in party leadership, but did answer questions about whether or not his persona is helpful to his opposition. “I’d much rather they fire their arrows at me than our candidate,” he chuckled.

If the Democrats pick up one of the three outstanding Senate seats that would be awesome.  I think it would be tough to get two and pretty impossible to get three.  Taking "Reprehensible" Chambliss's seat would be a bit much because there are still too many repugnant ones in Georgia.  I just hiope that Begich pulls it out as that would stop the Wasilla Hillbilly from getting into the Senate soon.

One thing I've been thinking is that the Dems need to go fishing and see if they can poach a few moderate republicans like Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.  Offer them something that would make them want to make the break from the shrinking party of extremists that they are no longer so welcome in.

I think Reid must start thinking Poach Baby Poach!
Schumer is a lapdog.
I don't think we hit 60 and I am ready for it to be over.  I would love to see Jesse Jackson, JR get the Junior IL Senate seat and Tammy Duckworth get his congressional seat.  Just my two cents.

PS.  My brother in law just called me - he has been promised four tickets to the Inauguration - a patient is married to a Congressman,...whoo hooo!
[60 possible but unlikely]

Schumer is talking about the average IQ of the Democratic Senators. By the way, it will go up a few points when Obama quits.
Rather then counting Senators, maybe Chuck U. Schumer can explain to us why he fought tooth and nail for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac when they were backing loans to people that couldn't possibly afford them.
I like the Democrats. Rather then getting anything done for the American people, they spend most of their time bragging about how mighty and powerful they are. Bet they get the good seats when they go to Applebee's too.
Minnesota's Senate vote count is going to take some time. The Democrats are confused on how many votes they need to manufacture for Franken to win.
Minnesota Republicans are intimidating the Democrats by saying that only the votes cast on or before election day should count. Schumer disagrees, he believes that voting should continue until Franken is winning.
Liberals. No sense of humor. Goes along nicely with having no sense. We're all going to need some sense of humor with Obama and his Clinton reruns in office.

Why does New York keep (re)electing idiots?
Schumer on the chances of Democrats being successful at anything: "Possible, but unlikely.".
So, how long before this post about senate seats devolves into the usual Sarah Palin/Republican bashing session by the usual First Read amateur pseudo-political mutual masturbation society (FRAPPMMS).

It certainly is all about the "O", I suppose.  Oddly enough, most of the hysteria about Palin is from hysterical members of the FRAPPMMS.  Apparently self-abuse is self-perpetuating.

After a two month hiatus from FR, it's time to start another one.  There is certainly no news here that can't be obtained elsewhere and 95% of the 95% of people who post here are still originals or illiterat clones of Eric Salinas, the masterful master of the FRAPPMMS.

Change, indeed.

Minnesota, Alaska and Georgia will not be a repeat of Florida an Ohio. The incumbents know they’re dead that’s why they exclaim fraud from the Dems. I guess the Repugs think because they are the Master’s of fraud divisions and innuendoes, they cultural wars will help them.

Minnesota, Alaska and Georgia diehards come back to earth your numbers aren’t there; but the democratic foot soldiers are.

Need not worry there Chuckles. After you get all your little (big?) Democratic butts in their seats, you can pass a law outlawing the NY Post and the WSJ.
Stay tuned to part (two).  Rush, and Hannity, and the Neo-Con's are on the sidelines, waiting to threw their box-short's over to Sarah, with their panties on tight, are ready to threw their I.Q. on the field if any of the remaining, Democrat Senator's win anymore seat's........any extra pom pom's or pink to-to's can be donated to the same.........or take them to the corner of, Easy Street, and Got It Made BlVD, accross from Sarah's house......
Why do you speak of the future of the "GOP" or ANY party?  Its THE NATION that is REAL.  This party or that party are just beliefs which people grasp and let go of, accept and grow out of.  If you're thinking about life of a party you're thinking needs to go deeper.
PT
OK, I'm off subject.  Chris M. ---you sat there with a smirk on your face as your black guest hammered Pat "the racist" Buchanan".

Pat was comming unglued, too funny!

Love it!
"ting tang, walla walla bing bang."

Is Schumer playing Witch Doctor? 60? Very unlikely, Doctor Quack.
