GOP's future: Political ostriches?

After looking at the vote totals and the exit polls, political analyst Charlie Cook fires off this warning to Republicans in his latest National Journal column: “Those who write off the 2008 election by saying that Republican candidates weren’t conservative enough are in denial. They are political ostriches, refusing to acknowledge that the country and the electorate are changing and that old recipes don’t work any more. Obama’s message and agenda were a far cry from those of the Democratic Party of a generation or two ago, but the Republican Party’s message and agenda haven’t changed much other than becoming even more fixated on cultural issues and tax cuts. A top Republican pollster remarked privately to me after the election that he couldn’t think of a single new idea generated on the Republican side during the 2008 campaign.”

“The dialogue about what the Republican Party is and where it should go will be driven over the next couple of years not by Republican members of Congress or governors or the party apparatus, but by the GOP’s presidential contenders for 2012, who will be fanning out across the country before the month is over. The question is whether the party’s leaders and members will be listening. Will they be open to new approaches to dealing with a dramatically changed country? Or will they simply say, ‘Back to the Future’?”

The Boston Globe: "With Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska in their midst, the nation's leading Republican governors used their annual conference to unleash some of their most furious criticism yet about the failed campaign she waged alongside presidential nominee John McCain. … Palin's colleagues rarely mentioned her by name, as the defeated vice presidential nominee swept through the conference, making a triumphal jaunt richer in nostalgia for her brief campaign than in prescriptions for a Republican rebound." More: "Palin's presence overshadowed the three-day conclave of elected executives that traditionally serves as a celebration of state-level policy successes, a partywide strategy session, and an audition for national candidates. It was at such a meeting in early 2008 that the Alaska governor first received McCain's attention, but her colleagues this week appeared at times miffed that even from under the wreckage, Palin's luster remained visible."

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is the host of the RGA meeting, not Sarah Palin, we swear. "Crist's centrist message, though, might appeal more to independents and Democrats than some Republicans, especially in light of quiet grumbling that's spread through conservative ranks over whether he did enough to help the presidential ticket carry a crucial swing state. ‘We just need to be inclusive, we need to reach out, and do a better job leading by approaching issues with a common-sense view," Crist told the (Fort Lauderdale) Sun Sentinel in an interview Wednesday.’”

More: "Still, Crist has a clear vision for a new GOP national strategy, one that pushes divisive social causes to the side and embraces diversity. The party needs to do a better job reaching out to black and Hispanic voters, Crist said. He noted the Republican rhetoric on illegal immigration was ‘less than friendly, shall we say’ -- an assessment that hardly will endear Crist to the party's right wing.”

Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele has become the second announced candidate for RNC chair, writes the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza. “‘After two devastating election cycles, the party has reached a crossroads,’ said Steele comparing the Republican Party to someone who has ‘hunkered down’ in a corner with no idea what to do next. ‘I think I may have some keys to open the door, some juice to turn on the lights,’ Steele explained.”

NBC's Chris Donovan reminds us of Steele's appearance in the "Meet the Press" 2006 Senate debate series. "Couple things of note that were discussed re his being a Republican were his earlier comments that his ‘R’ for Republican was a scarlet letter; that the Washington Post pointed out that he didn't have the word ‘Republican’ on his campaign Web site; that his official bio omitted the fact he was formerly the Maryland GOP chair; and we even used a bumper sticker that Steele's campaign put out that said STEELE DEMOCRAT in such a way that made it look like he WAS a Democrat -- and Steele admitted that he wasn't aware that they had similar ones that said Steele Republican."

One interesting portion of the transcript:

MR. RUSSERT: You said, you said the R is a scarlet letter and that if this is a choice between Democrats and Republicans, you lose.
LT. GOV. STEELE: Absolutely, Tim. Absolutely, absolutely. And that's exactly what Ben Cardin wants this race to be about. That's exactly what the Democrats want this race to be about. Because when this race is about Democrats and Republicans in a state like Maryland, which is two to one, all they have to say is "The boogeyman's Republican and all you guys remember, you've got to vote for us D's." What I've tried to do is break through that noise and say I represent something different. I represent, represent, I think, a different challenge for my state and for my country.
MR. RUSSERT: But you will organize with the Republicans if you won. You would vote for a Republican majority leader?
LT. GOV. STEELE: Yeah, yeah, I guess, yeah. That would make sense, wouldn't it?
MR. RUSSERT: And would you--and would you be...
LT. GOV. STEELE: I wouldn't vote for Ben.
MR. RUSSERT: Would you be a reliable vote for President Bush?
LT. GOV. STEELE: I would be a reliable vote for the people of Maryland because, at the end of the day, I'm going to evaluate every issue as it comes to me and where my party is wrong, I'm not standing with it, I'm not voting with it. And I've been clear on that. I've disagreed with my party on the minimum wage. I've called for an increase with the minimum wage. I disagreed with my party on No Child Left Behind.

*****************************************************

This is what I've been saying for some time...

http://www.thepajamapundit.com/2008/10/where-is-conservatism-going.html
Like I said before just start a circus act starring the GOP...LOL
Every Republican sounds like scrambled eggs to me.

I sure do miss Tim Russert tho. Broken jaw is boring as the host.  Tim can never be replaced.  lol
They need to distance themselves from Foxnews...

period

if you look at what got us here...

what got our country and their party...HERE

more than any other issue was the creation by republican operatives ten years ago...a news site that has sincerely warped American news...where the battle for the truth has swayed so many.

Foxnews warped the truth...

go look at the last decade...there is one ultimate source to blame for the situation we are in...

that the eyes and the ears of the country that made us such a great nation for so long... was co opted and fooled into thinking that truth...was liberal.
And Democrats new ideas were what again? Socialism? That's not exactly a new idea, it's been around a while.
Now would be the time for Libertarians to start talking with GOP members who are closer to their thinking and policy proposals - start raising money and converting some of the disenchanted.
Mainstream Americans are sick and tired of the divisive lies of the evangelical christian lunatic fringe whose complete incompetence has wrecked our secular democracy and economy.  As long as the repugnant ones let this clueless minority of hate mongers run their party then their party will be driven deeper into the sewer.

The moderate republicans have to take back their party from the extremists or they will become more and more extinct and irrelevant.  "Sinner" Sarah is the epitome of what's wrong with the religious extremist fanatics that have hijacked the shrinking minority party.
Good for Charlie Cook, for he is exactly right.  I used to be a Republican when they were fiscally conservative and socially "live and let live".  The evolution the Republican party into the regressive, cultural divisive party that it has become is an anathema to right thinking people.

If the Republican party clings to the right wing regressive views on society, science and the like they will be left in the dust bin of history.  They need to encourage the James Dobsons to leave and form their own party.

Every time I hear McCain refer to Theodore Roosevelt I want to throw something at the tv.  TR was a scientist first and foremost and would never have understood how the Republican Party wants to head back to the 1800's when there are so many discoveries waiting to be made.  TR also abhorred those who put big business over people's needs and that is why he formed the Bull Moose party.  TR may be McCain's hero, but trust me when I say that TR would not consider McCain to be his.
Here's a clear indication of just how divided the GOP is right now...

I see the GOP splitting into two parties.  The more moderate party with people like Crist and Pawlenty, and the extreme right-wing being led by people like Sarah Palin and Pat Buchannon.  While this will temporarily result in the Democrats being the dominate party at least through 2016, this will also make way for one of the finge parties like the Libertarians, the Green Party, the Bull Moose, etc., to come to the forefront, and effectively end the "two party" system.

The bottom line is that the Republican party as we have known it is dead and waiting to be burried.

67 Days Until Inauguration Day!
I don't see anything wrong with the extreme conservative views of the Republican party, to be honest. Greed, corruption, hatred, intolerance and downright dictatorship are things that will help turn this country around.
Camera-hog Palin can't seem to turn off the kleig lights - which was stupid. I think Pawlenty & Crist actually made some sense - and I'd never vote Republican. They need to rebuild the way the Dems have had to do. They both look like viable candidates for the presidency -- in 8 years!
Last night I saw clips from Sarah Palin's speech/press conference???? on Keith Oberman and she is no more prepared than she was in the beginning. It is honestly painful to watch her anymore.  I think the media would be doing us all a favor (please!!!)in letting this unfortunate piece of brilliant republican strategy fall by the wayside or tundra as the case may be. If this is all they have for 2012, dems will take the entire country all over!!

The neo-con and extreme right "talk radio and Fox News pipers" have led the Republican base off the political cliff.  Republican leaders are powerless with no message while the extreme neo-cons on radio and Fox have a message and have minions of follower-parrots, all spewing the same sound-bites of half-truths and lies.  It will be a cold day in hell when Hispanics return to or even consider the Republican Party!  I know I won't!
When talking about "political ostriches" don't forget MSNBC own Pat Buchanan.  He talks about 1964 like it was yesterday. That was 44 years ago!! Pat turns 70 this month.  Happy Birthday and look for a surprise retirement party.
May the arrogant, demoguery, corrupt and cronyism of the last decades go out by way of the Whig party. If they do not wake up and acknowledge the colossal hubris, hate mongering us vs them they unleashed on the American people their party will remain obsolete. Their will never be enough white rural rascists "Joe the Plumbers" to elect them dog catchers let alone presidents. Sara "Is Africa a continent" Palin is the future GOP- IT BELONGS IN THE ASH BIN OF HISTORY!
I hear nothing from the republicans about the lack of honor and integrity they showed in running their campaigns. They say nothing about their running the sleeziest campaigns in the history of our country.
They do not face up to or admit their decisions and policies almost destroyed our country.
Instead, they poster, pander take ego trips and point fingers.
Until they realize the American people want responsible, honorable, caring people in office they will continue to flonder.
As long as the bubble-brain from Alaska is allowed to continue blathering out her pedantic vocabulary and trying to put coherent thoughts together for soft ball interviews, talking about “moose stew recipes” versus any plausible policy…and acting like a de-facto spokesperson the GOP will continue to look like a group of morons.

The media continues to give this dolt a free pass, but that aside, Palin has not only proven to the American public that she’s not credible for the national office she was a candidate for, she’s also proven that she’s not credible as a state level politician either. For those that think otherwise and still believe that wrestling is real, please wake up…..look into her resume claims, most end up along with the “Bridge to No-Where” as being distorted and over emphasized….. She apparently snowed the paltry number of voters they have in Alaska into thinking she was some type of renaissance from corruption only to replace it with her own brand of abuse of power……

Here’s a shout out for Caribou Barbie…”get a life, that doesn’t include anything in politics, the snow job is just about over”!!
They were what we thought they were - A-HOLES!!!
Perfect description for Pat Buchannen, Joe Scarborough, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc.
Political ostriches. Buchannen proved that last night on Hardball with Chris Matthews. THESE are the GOP members who are forcing the GOP to re-invent themselves. These are the members that are stuck in the 1950s and keep delivering the same old, scary, flawed message that America is wise to and is turning away from and until they get these dinosauers OUT of the GOP, they will continue to lose upcoming elections. They will not get the groups they need (women, hispanics, AA's) until these idiots shut up and sit down. I'm guessing they won't go easy and this will take YEARS to accomplish! Yeah for the Democrats!
"making a triumphal jaunt richer in nostalgia for her brief campaign than in prescriptions for a Republican rebound."

The woman has absolutely no clue how to address the serious problems facing both the Republican Party and the nation as a whole.  Her default phrase is "Let's get to Washington and shake things up!"

Sounds great in theory, Sarah; however, your blatant ignorance of the complexity of the modern world leads many of us to believe that your attempt to "shake things up" would be what pushes our nation right off the cliff.

Thanks, but no thanks, Sarah.  Also.
BTW I hope no one gets excited abour Rick Sanford
from S.C. , he is as hard headed and stupid as Bush.

Don't give up, GOP! Keep telling people to hate and fear - it's bound to start working again. You have in your arsenal one of the most stupid politicians in decades who loves splashing blood and is so stupid she doesn't realize what a hypocrit she is - go with it!
Even Republican Governors are fed up with Sarah Palin. When will she return to Alaska and assume her duties as Governor? Would today be too soon? The American people knew a long time ago what the Republicans just concluded, that Sarah Palin was an ill informed joke forced upon John McCain by his campaign. John McCain is to be blamed as well for going along with selection of Sarah Palin as Vice Presidental candidate. The entire process was a joke.
What has not been addressed enough, even by the venerable Charlie Cook, is that a sea change in the electorate was coming anyway--except not until 2012 or even 2016. Obama accelerated it. This is not by any means the Democrats high water mark or the low point for the Republicans. This is history rolling over the populace--America is a very different place from when the republican ideology evolved from 1964-1980. That is now two generations old. History has passed them by.
Florida Gov. Crist is a far more likely prospect for being the GOP standard bearer in 2012 than Palin (SarahSixPack.com). Her flame will burn out in the coming months as hard right pundits and pols recognize that she simply cannot be sold to the broad electorate -- she's too dim witted and unpolished, and she's tainted by this last campaign. However, it will still be uphill for any GOP’er trying to knock off an incumbent Obama (ObamaAgain2012.com!)
As long as the Repubs insist on waging a culture war they will lose.  They made a calculated decision to hitch their wagon to the evangelicals in order to pander to them and it hasn't worked out so well. Stop bashing minorities, stop bashing gays and stop bashing the darn middle class!  Get out of the bedroom and promote individual freedom.
The Republicans and their "base" are the American Al Qaeda. Religious fanatics are a curse no matter which religion it is. Hitler was a Christian.
Has anyone read what Minority Leader Boehner has been saying? He wants their party (GOP) to be the check and balance of Obama so he doesn't lead our country into Socialism? I would like to ask Mr. Boehner where he and the other like minded Republicans were to stop Bush from his dangerous and irresponsible leadership of this country which harmed us at every level? He wants to continue to be divisive which is exactly what the American people have said they have had enough of. If he can not do his job in trying to come to a concenus in fixing this country then he needs to go. I am tired of these politicians not supporting good ideas no matter what side of the aisle they come from. The two party system needs to go.
As long as the GOP allows Palin and her ilk to hi-jack the party, it will never be inclusive or inviting to the majority of the people.
