The irony of Hillary as Sec. of State

Posted: Friday, November 14, 2008 9:59 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
If Obama selects Hillary Clinton to be his Secretary of State, it would be an ironic pick -- given that Team Obama downplayed her foreign-policy credentials (especially as first lady) during the Democratic primary season.

Video: NBC Deputy Political Director Mark Murray offers his first read on who President-elect Barack Obama is considering for his cabinet... and why.

Remember this December 2007 New York Times piece, which Obama supporters grabbed on to in the build-up to Iowa? "[D]uring those two terms in the White House, Mrs. Clinton did not hold a security clearance. She did not attend National Security Council meetings. She was not given a copy of the president's daily intelligence briefing. She did not assert herself on the crises in Somalia, Haiti and Rwanda. And during one of President Bill Clinton's major tests on terrorism, whether to bomb Afghanistan and Sudan in 1998, Mrs. Clinton was barely speaking to her husband, let alone advising him, as the Lewinsky scandal sizzled."

There was also the Bosnia sniper-fire story. "It's part of a troubling pattern of Sen. Clinton inflating her foreign policy experience," an Obama campaign spokesman said at the time.

HILLARY CLINTON IS THE " PERFECT " CHOICE .
... but she does have experience meeting with other world leaders -- even if it was mostly a ceremonial gesture.

again Mark

their is no irony here...

Clinton played up those meetings as foreign policy credentials for the Presidency...which is about judgement.

The judgement lies with the Presidency.

Her skills and meetings and history works for the negotiation presence...the diplomatic image when she walks in the room and to the table.

big difference...

that's not irony...it is simple skill set math.

she is the best to be the person walking into that room to deliver the judgment from Obama.

as simple as you are trying to make it... your "irony" math is wrong.
Yea well lets not foget that having Hill as SoS will also mean we will have Bill as SoS which may not be a bad thing.  So far I think Obama is doing a fine job.
The fact Monster lady is a loser, a thorn in Obama's side. Question: how do you send this monster Packing?
What can i say here.. Hillary Clinton as sec of state? Gimme a break! Thats not the change we need, THATS MORE OF THE SAME! haha!
Team of rivals:  why not?  I think it makes perfect sense.
It would be a wise choice. Go Hillary, for SOS.
I wish I could wash away the shame and guilt I feel for how my beloved Republican party has acted these last eight years. I will always be a Republican, but I am not a proud Republican. Nor do I think I will be anytime soon. I ask for your mercy.
I understand the conciliatory idea for this but Hillary damaged her own credibility terribly during the campaign..."Sniper fire"...etc...
Obama is closely following in the footsteps of Honest Abe when he was the President-Elect in 1860.  Lincoln hand picked Stewart, his republican rival, to become his SOS. Lincoln also reached across the aisle to Southern Democrats to fill other positons on his cabinet.
Maybe all those books Obama read on Lincoln are finally paying off

I think people should stop looking at Hilary as attached to Bill.  Bill did himself no favors during the campaign. He ended up being more of a liability.  To say we get Bill as SOS if Hilary is chosen downplays Hilary's qualifications and strengths as simply being an offshoot of her husband's.  If she is chosen, she will be chosen because of HER qualifications, not Bill's.  She is an intelligent woman in her own right.
Why would Obama want a greedy Washington self serving paper hanger. Clinton is a package deal, she is the puppet and her husband a babbling has been. OH Yes, Billy boy destroyed her chance to beat Obama! Her experience , Hell that's a pure laugh, more like the queen of drag! Now let's see Obama's back bone.
Hillary is a neo-con.  Kerry wants the job, is eminently qualified, and brought Obama in to the national spotlight as keynote speaker in 2004. Kerry has earned it!
Oh yeah, and John McCain should be appointed as Director of Homeland Security.  Lot's of advantages to the country and the administration in such a move.  Team of Rivals:  it's time.
Let's just hope that if she goes to Kosovo that she isn't shot at. Hillary is better off in the Senate helping to push through healthcare and other agenda items for the Democratic President. Personally I like either Sam Nunn or Bill Richardson for Sec. of State.
I believe that the best pick for the post would be Gov. Bill Richardson. I don't think that Sen. Clinton has the experience. However, if President Clinton were the nominee, that would be another story.

Anybody is better than Condi Rice who follows Bush's advice to go out and shop as the remedy for any crisis.

Facts
That is the question!!! !

In Bosnia HRC was not in danger; but, the world be if Clinton were Secretary of State; simply, in my opinion, because of the many lies and distortions told during the campaign. Don’t forget; HRC told Keith O she would obliterate Iran.

HRC has many strong points and is very smart. I just don’t think diplomacy is one.
Mark, are you serious? It's it ironic that Obama is President Elect when Hillary said all he gave was a speech in 2002?? She'd be lucky if Obama extended this offer to her and overlooked how she tried to trash him...
Its time for the Clintons to go to the farm. They have
they had their minute in the sun and left a dirty
record.
This makes TOTAL SENSE
TEAM OF RIVALS part 2
I've noticed that lawyers may fight like junkyard dogs for their cause, then go to dinner together. Both Hillary and Obama were trained as lawyers.  Barack sees the talent of Hillary and said so in one of the debates. "Hillary I would like you to help in my administration"  Remember...

Obama is a student of Lincoln and Abe brought his political foes to his cabinet.  Hillary would be a good fit.  She likes to travel, be in the middle of negotiations, she knows the players.

MSNBC--Again, Don't be Dumb. Don't try to spread issues when there are none.  I believe this deal was cut 6 months ago at Boxer's DC home when Barack and Hillary met in secret.
Hey, she's the one who wanted the 3 AM phone call.  Okay, enough talk.  Show us.
CHANGE? Even to consider Clinton would be the first stroke of affirming Obama, lied!
We elected Obama...neither Clinton was on the ticket and Obama owes them squat...he needs to stay his own man and not start appointing Clintons or their apologists...they lost like Mccain...go away
Hillary would be a wonderful choice for Secretary of State. She's qualified, and she's savvy.
However, I hope she tells Obama to kiss her ass if he offers her the job.
I would never go to work for anyone who talked about me or my family the way Mr MOUTH talked about the Clintons.
Of all those mentioned for state Clinton would end up being the worst choice.  She is a terrific legislator.  If anyone is going to be needed to fight for a sensible domestic agenda it's Mrs. Clinton.

Kerry or Richardson would be tougher and are more experienced with foreign leaders.
if president elect Obama thinks she can get the job done, well let it be, he is the BoSS.
What I want to know is why is everyone trashing Obama for picking former Clintonites for important posts.  I mean, they were the LAST Democratic administration in office, so it would only be logical.  Who would you rather he picked, Joe the Plumber, Larry the Cable Guy, or maybe Bob the Builder?  Give the man a break.  We DID have 8 years of fiscal prosperity, not to mention a surpluse, under Clinton.

67 Days Until Inauguration Day!

As much as I love Hillary Clinton, I would like to see Bill Richardson as the Secretary of State.  He is a tough negotiator.  We need somone who can stand up to some of the bullies of the world.

I would like to see Hillary as Majority Leader in the Senate.  We need to get rid of Harry Reid.  Or how about Hillary as head of Health & Human Services.  Her passion is Health Care and she would be perfect.
CHANGE? Even to consider Clinton would be the first stroke of affirming Obama, lied!

---
This is a stupid statement...Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton are NOT the same person...Hillary Clinton appears to me to have changed in many ways...I think she now knows that see come stand on her own without Bill...this alone makes her a new person...

And if that Sarah Palin can be considered as VP...Hillary can be considered for SoS...and I am not a Hillary fan...

Based on the mess that Bush made ...Obama will all the help that he can get...

Obama did not lie...he is just smart...
I say give it back to Colin Powell - talk about someone motivated to clear his otherwise good name.

Besides - isn't it stupid to clear the Senate of Democrats? Especially when you-know-who comes brooming back here with Ted Stevens scalp?
I agree with dl, Exeter NH, in addition the fact that her "experience" in the WH was overblown, and rightly pointed out by the NY Times, Obama and others doesn't mean she hasn't gained experience in her 8 years in the Senate, or that she has no experience, or no skill sets that would make her a good Secretary of State. Nor is there any irony involved. Frankly I'd prefer Hagel, but maybe he should be Secretary of Defense.
IS THIS A MEDIA JOKE OF THE DAY? What's she going to do, write a book about closet searches.
I think Hillary has earned pretty much whatever place she wants ---- but Sec. of State seems a very poor fit.  Her strongest issues were domestic ones (health care, jobs, etc.) and having a position dealing with one of them, or remaining in the Senate to become a force there, or perhaps going on the Supreme Court ...... all of those things would be HERS, and hers alone.  In dealing with foreign leaders and international issues, she would always be seen as "Bill's wife"   She deserves more than that.
I would never go to work for anyone who talked about me or my family the way Mr MOUTH talked about the Clintons.

OBAMA IS A LOUD MOUTH WITH NO EXPERIENCE AND NOTHING TO BACK UP HIS B.S.

1. Get over it.
2. The Obama campaign treated Clinton far more respectful than the Clinton campaign treated Obama.

Either you failed to follow the race closely, or tuned in late in the game, or you're completely blind where Hillary is concerned, and your lack of objectivity causes you to have a significantly distorted view of reality. I imagine more Obama supporters, than Clinton supporters would prefer that Hillary have no part in the Obama administration. Clinton lost the primary, she has accepted it, Obama and Clinton agree on 99% of the issues. If you supported Clinton for reasons other than gender alone, you should be thrilled the Democrats won. But fortunately, it doesn't matter now. So continue to stew in your pity party, while the rest of us are basking in the sweet taste of victory.
Boy, the media sure likes to keep the pot stirred up.  As an avid Obama supporter from the beginning I have no problem with Hillary being Secretary of State, and think that her and Bill are very well respected around the world, and so it would be a great pic, but I don't understand why the media has to bring up all the old crap.  These 2 people are adults and are behaving like adults and working together to make this a better country.  There was alot said during the primary campaign, and I was not happy with Clinton at that time, but the party is united and Obama is reaching out to his team of Rivals, and I think it is great.  I have forgiven the things that happened during the campaign, and so should the media, instead of digging up all the shit, they need to let it go.  We have.  Anything to get a story, and it really pisses me off that the media has to do this, instead of being behind it.  Trying to stir up the fighting, is not going to take this country where it needs to go.  I think Hillary would be a great addition to the Obama Team.  I love how Obama is picking very strong people and very good people for his team.  I trust his judgement, and know he will pick a team that works with him well.  If he can forgive and forget, so can I.  He is also meeting with McCain, which shall be interesting.

The one person I will have a problem with is the witch from wasilla, and I really hope he does not reach out to her, and I don't see him doing that since he is looking for intelligent people, but sometimes you have to keep your enemies close.
hey, "I can see Russia from my house" sounds an awful lot like "I saw Russians over my philandering husband's shoulder" I say either hillsy or Sarah would be equal choices
Hillary is not a good choice for Secretary of State. Her resume pales in comparison to Bill Richardson's and Chuck Hagel's, either one of which could hit the ground running. President Elect Obama needs people in this key role that he can trust implicitly; both Richardson and Hagel went out on a limb for him and are much more de3serving of this high profile appointment.
I think you could put Hillary Clinton any where and she would do an excellent job, but I always saw her in more of a role working on a domestic agenda. She is tough, smart, and sincerely concerned with the welfare of this country. She would do well.
I voted for Obama because of the CHANGE we need. It's bad enough that 1/2 of the people he's bringing into his cabinet have worked for or with one of the Clinton's already. I thought we were rid of the Clinton's? I guess Obama fooled us like Wall Street.
Obama ran an excellent, well-organized and controlled campaign.  He picked the right people for the job and he stayed on course with the message he wanted.  I don't think anyone is going to run over him.  He's smart enough to pick the right people for his Cabinet as well.  I just look forward to seeing what direction he goes.  I believe that what he does is in our best interests.  He gave us hope that he can change things with our help.  Maybe he can change the mood and behavior in Washington too.  They all saw that you either get on board or get out of the way.  Those who don't aren't going to be employed - yes, employed, they work for US - at the next election. We have long memories and we now remember that we deserve better.
Hillary for Health & Human Services or Majority Leader; Richardson as Secy of State.
Trish,

I totally agree.  Hillary qualifications are hers, she's worked hard to get where she is.  If she were simply an offshoot of her husband all first lady's could be considered for SoS -- I think Hillary would be an excellent choice, she's highly recognized and respected in the world.  What I like most is that Obama is not afraid to surround himself with highly intelligent, highly qualified people.
Powell should be secretary of defense
It was the Iowa Debates that turned me on to Obama.  He told a very "laugh out loud Hillary" that she could also be part of his Advisory Team if he was elected.  Obama is one "sharp" politician and I will tell you, I think and I hope, he will pull off these next four to eight years with very few mistakes.
I SAY NAY, NAY, NAY, TO HRC @ STATE, TRY HER @ DEFENSE, THEN ANNOUNCE OBAMA CUTTING THE BLOATED PENTAGON BUDGET BY 0NE-THIRD......WIN=WIN!!!!
Am I the only one who thinks that, after all the legal nonsense the Clintons were put through by the Republican Party, that it would be sweet justice to have her appointed Attorney General instead?  After all, as a former lawyer, she is more than qualified for the post.
