President 2.0

Posted: Sunday, November 16, 2008 3:39 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Abigail Williams
Yesterday, President-elect Obama gave his first virtual fireside chat. The weekly Democratic radio address, also posted as a YouTube video on change.gov, is just a taste of the new style of open governing promised by the incoming Administration.

Seated at a simple desk with the American flag draped to the right, and thick leather bound books behind, the image first seems like all presidential addresses made from the Oval Office. But something seems off in the presentation -- Obama's torso as right of center as his tie and the camera left at an awkward distance forcing Obama to lurch forward towards his viewers. It seems, well, like a YouTube video.

The uniqueness in this style of address is more than just its presentation; the video represents an adaptation to new generations who watch what they want, whenever they want, wherever they want. The video is one in a series of continuing efforts made by Obama to create a more transparent and connected democracy that brings the decision making of government directly to its citizens. The purpose of this e-government, according to Obama, is to "lift the veil" from Washington and allow people to become active participants in their own government.

Of course, the details of this citizen participation have yet to be explained and how integral a part the opinion of citizens will play in specific government proposals remains to be seen. For now the image of President-elect Obama projected on your iPod seated next to your gas-burning fireplace certainly gives the appearance of change.

I absolutely agree - the production values of the address were awful.  Similar to most websites, it looks like a bunch of geeks put it together rather than someone with an eye toward video production.  In an age when anyone can produce a U-tube video, this one looked that way.  Hopefully, Obama's transition team will hire a producer for his next "chat" and leave the amateur videos to the kids.
Even those with an "R" by their name have to admit there is a new feeling of togetherness that arrived with the election of President Obama.  Let's hope it lasts a long time.

Oddly enough it occurred to me the other night that this may not have happened had it not been for Pres. Bush.  Like a relationship that caused unspeakable heartache, we have awaken a new Nation.

I remember one of those classic Mark Thieme posts (where have you gone, Mark and Van?) where he said that one thing about Obama is that he was cool.  Slick Willy was a white boy lost in the blues, but Obama is the man with a plan.

I believe this is the essence of the Obama political revolution. That is, the internet became an alternative media conduit to and from the public.  Evidence of this was shown by the millions of donations in small amounts to the campaign. Now Obama is simply acknowledging this and is using it to his and our advantage as he should. The established media, especially the right wing variety, has been effectively managed by this phenomenon.
One can HOPE for more openess from an Obama administration but the cynic in me says wait and see.
Excellent!  Though I'm surprised by the boring backdrop.
I would like to see a real fireplace with flames and Obama in a rocking chair for his chats--- seriously!
One thing is for sure: there is nothing wrong with doing your best to bring the White House into the .com age.  At the very least, it provides our citizenry opportunity to feel that they are a part of the process simply by turning on their PC and communicating with the Administration.  I like it.

In 1966 Dylan said to an interviewer, "if I want to find out anything I'm not going to read Time or Newsweek magazines. They've got too much to lose by printing the truth." That's a great line and one worth rmembering.

Today he rags on the New York Times. Looks like  the "spokeman for a generation" saw the media for what it truly was even back in the 60's .... a outlet that can't be trusted.
I think it is great that he is trying to keep his promise to have a transparent government, whatever the technical difficulties.  More power to him.
GOBAMA!!
Whoa. The new president isn't the center of the universe. That's got to be a good thing.
Considering how closed the Bush Administration has been and how closed Congress has been prior to 2006 it will be a relief to finally see an open democracy in Washington. Obama is starting with an open Administration I just hope it stays open during his whole time in office whether that is 4 or 8 years.

Fireside chat? Boy you guys are so in love with this guy. Get some media backbone, before you turn into jellyfish.
I am so stoked about the American goverment being more transparent, i.e. the internet connections, that I am becoming Obama news junkie.  It is easy to feel connected and informed.  Exciting and hopeful times ahead.
This is what I am talking about.  A leader who embraces the future but does not forget about the past. I put my trust, ambition, and drive into making his goals our goals and making the United States better for all.
Interesting concept.  Very good way to keep supporters (and young people) involved.  Past presidents seem to forget that people under 65 actually existed in this country (one of the reasons McCain lost, btw).  I'm glad to see Obama is taking this innovative approach to communicating to the people.

This new style of Obama's view of how a President should communicate is a good one. The modern use of technology, especially in communication is vital to get out his message consistently. The active participation of all citizens in their government is crucial for it too succeed. The worst thing for any President to do is hide in a "bubble," and not consistently communicate with the people. Obama must use the most modern communication systems to keep everyone informed, and allowed to participate. That is fact!
I watched it. Darn, that man is good. I'm proud to say I voted for him. He has already brought us change. I can't wait to see what he does when he officially steps into the role of commander-in-chief!
At this point, besides stepping into the present with communication, President Elect Obama is setting up an administration, that will be a change, from the current administration, but more of the same 8 years we experienced under the Clinton administration, full of lobbyist, plagued by scandals and good ole boy networks. I have not seen one thing at this point to show he is what he said he was. Still waiting to see a difference in the way things have always been done.
I watched our future Pres on 60 minutes last night.  It was so nice to hear him talk and both my husband and I agreed Jan 20 cannot come soon enough.  The intelligence he showed, humility, dignity is what our country has been yearning for in a Pres.
Saw it. Not very presidential looking to me.
I'm hoping our president elect doesn't give people of color a bad name, in the long run. He still is nothing short of suspicious to the lot of us.
For Obama to be successful in maintaining widespread support among the masses, he needs to add more substantive information in his addresses.  I found his video address lacking on all fronts: purpose of message; new and useful information; inspiration.

His deficiencies may be due to the fact that he hasn't taken office yet; thus, he may not able to provide "action" reports and other substantive information for the public.

Nonetheless, I was disappointed with the video address.  It sounded like a watered down stump speech.

Finally, an end to out of context quotes to suit misguided arguments. As the days of "objective" journalism have been replaced by "corporate agendas", executed thru the news departments with marching orders from the "top", this manner of speaking to America by President-elect Obama is a breath of fresh air.
This is so dumb and Lame......
Running of subject matter????
This should be interesting...  So far so good, Obama.  :-)
PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA IS DOING THINGS THE WAY  HE THINKS IS RIGHT FOR HIM AND HIS SUPPORTERS AND THE PEOPLE IN 2009 WHEN HE BECOME PRESIDENT. I AM ALL READY SICK OF THIS 24/7 MSM MEDIA TRYING TO TELL THE PRESIDENT ELECT HOW TO THINK TRYING OUT THINK HIM ALL THESE GUESTS ON THESE CABLE SHOW GETTING ADVICE OR THE PANEL LAYING OUT HIS PLANS.IF THEY DON'T KNOW BY NOW OBAMA PRESIDENT
MAKES UP HIS OWNMIND OR WILL TALK TO HIS ADVISORS. THOSE WISE GUYS WHO THINK BECAUSE AS ONE GUEST SAID HE NEEDS HELP AND IS GREEN GUESS WHAT HE WON'T BE ASKING MSM OR THEIR GUESTS FOR THEIR HELP. .
I'm a very dedicated viewer of this show, along with others. But very disappointed in hearing certain news anchor referring to president elect Barack Obama as Barack Obama. Reporter Alex Witt is known for doing this on a regular basic,I'm beginning to think it's a personal isssue and not an error. I do understand that their are some who my not be quite accepting to  president elect Obama winning the election, But show a little respect. I happen to believe that it's very important for our news reporter and news anchors to deliver a high level of respect and loyalty to the viewers, and our public officials. This is unacceptable from all points, and should not be tolerated.
THIS IS OBAMA'S "CHANGE."   A FREAKIN YOUTUBE VIDEO.   BIG DEAL.   WHAT WILL OBAMA DO WHEN THE PEOPLE ARE NO LONGER AMUSED BY HIS GIMMICKS?
