Lieberman keeps chairmanship

Posted: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 11:58 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Democrats in Congress have allowed Joe Lieberman to hold onto his powerful chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee in a secret ballot vote.

Video: Sen. Joe Lieberman and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid speak to reporters after the Democratic caucus voted Tuesday to let Lieberman keep his committee chairmanship.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, however, asked the Connecticut senator to step down as chairman of the Private Sector and Consumer Solutions to Global Warming and Wildlife Protection subcommittee of the Environmental & Public Works Committee, which Lieberman said he did.

Lieberman, who caucuses with the Democrats, retains his AirLand subcommitte chairmanship of the Armed Services Committee.

Lieberman said he regretted some of his comments regarding President-elect Obama during the campaign trail, or that he would have liked to have made them more clearly.

keep your friends close and your enemies closer!
the people of CT. will pass judgement come reelection!
I see congressman KENNEDY becoming senator KENNEDY!
with this and all the clinton people running the Administration I don't see a whole lot of CHANGE.

And what about the value of loyalty PE Obama?  Kerry gave you the chance? And now you ditch him for your former enemy Hillary?
Don't Lieberman and Obama have vastly opposing national security views? Why in the world would they let Lieberman keep THAT chairmanship? He will be torpedoing Obama on national security at every turn. Dumb move. And very, very weak. Reid is really an awful Majority Leader.
They're not going to kick him out of the caucus if there's any chance they might get to 60.  Be real.
do not worry we in connecticut is going to see him out on his lying ears
Sen. Leahy for Majority Leader.  Support senators with courage!

I'm not a big fan of Lieberman either way, but it is time that everyone gets beyond the election, just as Obama himself was able to do in hopes of getting something done.  Lieberman stood by an old friend over politics and blind party loyalty and that should be seen positively.  Sure he said some terrible things about Obama during the campaign, but so did Hillary and even Joe Biden.  Forget, forgive and move on.  Election campaigns are stupid and petty and should be left behind as soon as possible.
What a bunch of wimps! Obama's not going to get anything through the Senate with that bunch of wimps.
This was the right decision. Keep your enemies close.
I can't wait for the voters of CT to shut Lieberman down by voting him out of office.  I didn't want him to keep anything, not even his bogus "Independent" label.  The man turns my stomach and the Democrats should make him use the bathroom in the basemant!
Weak. Very weak. Hope this isn't a general indication of what the  Democrats will do with a Senate majority.
Another example of Obama taking the high road.  We should all learn a lesson.
Joe owes Obama a big political. "Thank you!" Obama saved Joe's political bacon today, and Joe had always better respect Obama in the future. Lieberman dodged a huge political bullet today, and must now make good political choices in the future. It was Joe's lucky day!! Don't forget it Joe. Time to move forward America!
Once again the Dems proved to be pussies. LIE-berman is a complete tool and should have been booted. Obama over-reached on this one. He should have left it to the Dems in the Senate to decide Benedict Arnold's fate.

And what kind of message do you think that will give others?  Obama campaigned on working together and ending bipartisanship politics.  Was that just talk for you, or did you really mean it?
Barack Obama PROVED it by his response of asking Democrats to allow Lieberman to keep his chair.
And again I ask, which is easier, distancing yourself from those who disagree with you or treat you bad, or trying to work together with them.
Those of you asking for Lieberman's ouster want Obama to take the easy way out.  I don't.
I voted for Obama because I felt he would be instrumental in reaching across party lines in order to IMPROVE our country.  I did not vote for him so he could turn around and act spineless and petty.  I watched that from Bush for 8 years and I've had enough of that.  I thought others did to, but with the number of people posting negatively about Lieberman, I'm beginning to question that.

Liberals are so easily led. If Obama told you to 'jump', you'd ask how high. If he told you to take crap, you'd ask what color. Bunch of lemmings.

No, quite the opposite BJT.  It was Republicans who were easily led by a man who "claimed" to be for "compassionate conservativism".  We are now reaping the rewards of that "compassionate Conservativism", and quite frankly, there is nothing to show for it.  Wages have stagnated, jobs lost or shipped overseas, banks tanking, and our entire country (not to mention the world) currently in a recession.
But I guess you're proud of voting into the office of Presidency, not once, but twice, a man who helped shape our current problems.
I'm not laying all the blame at Bush's feet.  There are Democrats who have dropped the ball as well.
But to sit there and resort to "name calling" does NOTHING to improve America.
Do you really want to improve America?  Or are you just another blogger who feels the need to call others names or whine about it?
By the way, the only time I really supported Bush was just after 9/11.  At that time, I believed President Bush when he said we would get Bin Laden and make him pay for his crimes.  But I guess that just makes me a "Bush lemming", like you.
Seven years later and still........No Bin Laden.  Six years ago, Bush said "Mission Accomplished".  I'm still waiting to hear exactly what mission was accomplished, because I didn't hear anywhere where Bin Laden was either captured or killed.  Maybe he was referring to his "compassionate conservativism".
My, my.  Seems that this Obama-Cat is doing things his way.  I love it.  Have we all not seen enough of this good man Barack to know that everything he does has a purpose, even though it may be hidden from the rest of us?  The only thing I wonder is what the quid pro quo is that Lieberman has to pony up.  I predict this will pay dividends for President Obama and I further predict we'll never know what those dividens are!
If Lieberman were so consequential for McCain, why didn't McCain get much in the way of indepent or dem votes?  Lieberman wasn't consequential as a VP candidate and he wasn't consequential as this year's pseudo-dem lap-dog for the Republican's.  I can't even remember the name of the Dem that played that role in 2004.

It was a smart move by Obama - he continues to show class far above his various opponents.
Big MISTAKE. Maybe Barack need to read Machivelli's "The Prince". This will just empower the GOP to attack. come on, do you think this will stop Limbaug and the other gasbags... No time o look weak.

Can you tell us your source for this information, please?  Thanks.
If Joe Lieberman represents the leadership of my party I’m not sure I can continue to consider myself a democrat.

Lieberman ran as an Independent in 2006.  He still is a member of the Democratic party, but is not a "leader" within the party.  He lost that when he decided to run as an Independent.
I have never forgiven Lieberman since he was the VP candidate and said that people who did not believe in God could not be moral.  He was divisive then, is divisive now and will always be divisive. He is the opposite of everything that Obama and America stands for.  He has said he does not believe in representative government and that he only has to follow his conscience instead of the wishes of his constituents -- translation, he is thinks we have an elected dictatorship or house of Lords.  His war and homeland security policies are wrong and unconstitutional.  Is there anything good you can say about him?
