Cornyn to lead NRSC

From NBC's Carrie Dann
Sen. John Cornyn
says that he's ready to "hit the ground running" in his new post as the Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Cornyn, a Texas senator since 2002 and the state's former Attorney General, could be the second Texan in Republican Party elective leadership should Rep. Pete Sessions beat Rep. Tom Cole for the top spot in the NRCC.  Cornyn's ascension to the post as the Senate's top elections architect comes as some Republicans worry aloud that the GOP has become increasingly limited to Southern states and that the party is losing ground in the Mountain West and the Northeast.

In his new role, Cornyn will have to oversee a coming election cycle in which Republicans could stand to weather further losses.  Among GOPers whose 2010 races are shaping up as potential nailbiters are Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, Sen. Jim Bunning of Kentucky, and Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire.

In a statement, Cornyn vowed to dive into the new job, starting by aiding his Republican colleagues who are locked in unresolved reelection races.

"This is a critical time for Republicans in the Senate and across the country, particularly as Democrats stand on the doorstep of a super-majority in the Congress," Cornyn said in the press release, warning of dire legislative consequences if Democrats are to reach the 60-vote filibuster-proof threshold in the U.S Senate.

The Texas Senator, who sits on the Armed Services and Judiciary Committees, was elected unanimously to fill the post previously held by Nevada Sen. John Ensign, who in turn is running to lead the Senate's Policy Committee. Republican Norm Coleman had previously indicated that he would run for the NRSC job but withdrew when his reelection run against Al Franken was thrown into a high-stakes recount.

Cornyn himself survived a reelection challenge from Democrat Rick Noriega, who blasted the Texas Senator during the election season on his closeness to George W. Bush and his backing of the $700 billion economic bailout plan passed in October.   Cornyn's campaign manager in that race, Rob Jesmer, will serve as the Executive Director of the NRSC.

Here's the full release:

WASHINGTON--U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, made the following statement regarding his unanimous election today by the Senate Republican Conference to serve as the Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) for the 2010 election cycle.

“I am honored by the confidence my Republican colleagues have placed in me to serve as the next Chairman of the NRSC.  This is a critical time for Republicans in the Senate and across the country, particularly as Democrats stand on the doorstep of a super-majority in the Congress.  If that is allowed to happen, the Democratic Congress will have unchecked authority to raise taxes, diminish our military’s readiness, and continue Washington’s unaccountable spending spree.  We must have checks and balances because the American people deserve accountability from Washington now more than ever.  To that end, I will continue to do whatever I can in the days ahead to help our Republican candidates emerge victorious in the outstanding Senate races.

“At the same time, I intend to hit the ground running and start laying the ground work with my colleagues for Republican victories in 2010.  We must ensure our Party has the candidates and the financial resources to effectively communicate our positive vision for our country.  There is simply no time to waste, and I will work as hard as possible in my capacity as NRSC Chair to help move our Party forward.

Sen. Cornyn also announced today that Rob Jesmer will serve as Executive Director of the NRSC.   Jesmer, who managed Sen. Cornyn’s strong re-election victory in Texas earlier this month, is a seasoned political operative with an extensive background managing and consulting in Republican races across the country.  Prior to his most recent position, Jesmer served as a Regional Political Director for the Southeast Region at the Republican National Committee for the 2006 election cycle, Chief of Staff to Congressman Mike Rogers (R-AL) and as National Field Director for the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee for the 2002 election cycle.

“I am very impressed with the political acumen, intelligence and work ethic that Rob displayed in managing my recent re-election victory.  Those qualities, coupled with his extensive leadership experience working on campaigns across the country, will be an invaluable asset for the NRSC moving forward,” Sen. Cornyn said.

....warning of dire legislative consequences......

Boy, I'll say! Dire! Like it hasn't been that way for 6 our of the 8 years Bush has been in office! Pony up, Reukes.....it's our turn.
Once again, you're thinking in a vacuum. After two years of Obama-nomics and the idiot Dummy-crats stumbling around trying to run the show, the country will beg the Republicans to take back the Senate and the House, because at that time Obama will have something he doesn't have today, a record. Republicans can run on the reverse theme Dummy-crats did this time around "We're not Dummy-crats".
The world hates us for what blue states thieves with their greed and housing bubbles have done to their markets.
He's wondering about the Democrats having a super majority?  What did the Republicans do when they had it -- get us bloated with pork and centralize power in the president.  What a bunch of bad things to do!
what I don't understand is why was it so "good" when the Republicans controlled both houses and the presidency, but it's dire if it's the Democrats doing it.  People must have very short memories if they do not remember the first six years of Bush's terms.f
FR [[Cornyn himself survived a reelection challenge from Democrat Rick Noriega, who blasted the Texas Senator during the election season on his closeness to George W. Bush and his backing of the $700 billion economic bailout plan passed in October. ]]

This is why Democrats can't lead. Noriega blasted Coyners on the bailout deal, but yet a huge majority of Democrats supported the same bill. It's the same thing with Obama bringing Hillary into the cabinet. Isn't she a war-monger? She, along with Biden, did vote for the war. Democrats will spend all their time arguing among themselves.
Sounds like the same GOP talking points to me (scare, scare, scare, demonize the other guy because we have no ideas of our own).  Take heart, fellow dems.  It's pretty clear that the Republicans aren't going to change anytime soon, which means we'll have a good 8 years to fix what they screwed up.

I saw these two guys get into an argument, and they're tossing insult after insult back at one another, and neither of them are taking the bait, and finally one guy says, "You...you REPUBLICAN!" That was the straw that finally broke the camel's back and got them fighting.
I saw John Cornyn's campaign ads on TV and the internet.....

He's got NOTHING to say, it he takes SO LONG to say it...

Big John,
Big Bad John
(without explanations)

John Stewart was surprised that they made his coat in adult sizes

sorry, Republicans, the cupboard is bare

Will they automatically oppose every Obama initiative ?

Maybe that's why Obama spared Lieberman
He wanted to convert a potential adversary into a potential ally

Maybe that's why Obama met with John McCain
Maybe that's why Obama is 'considering' Hillary as SoS

Prediction: Hillary WILL NOT BE SoS

OP Taylor you have it correct. Wait till Obama has a record to run from. 2010 will be fine
Thank you, Al !!
Al Gore will campaign for Joe Martin in the Georgia Senate run-off

If Obama targets a radio ad on black radio stations, it could really help

Saxby Chambliss is a cowardly, draft dodger who got 5 student deferments during the Viet Name era !!

Chicken Hawk !

Chicken Sh*t !!
Nasty comments about the GOP, including childish terms like 'Repukes' and 'Rethugnicant,' in 3, 2, 1...
Boy, I'll say! Dire! Like it hasn't been that way for 6 our of the 8 years Bush has been in office! Pony up, Reukes.....it's our turn.

I don't recall the Republicans having anything close to a 60 seat majority in the Senate during any of that time period. Things like SS reform and banking reform got filibustered out by the Democrats. On most other things though, there was solid support from the Democrats for the Republicans plans on things such as the war and tax reductions.

So Democrats, have your little turn. But remember, we're watching you.
The republicans are in the same situation they were in when Barry Goldwater (Az)ran for POTUS and lost.  It took 16 years before the republicans won again. Add 16  years to those in the GOP and they will all be older than McCain.  Sarah Palin will be old and grey.  There will be a few states like Texas that will stay red, but the times, they are a changin.
here in Texas, we'll elect almost anything that runs as a Republican.  It doesn't even have to have a pulse.  Example: our greasy Governor Goodhair Rick Perry, who (despite his unpopularity) got reelected in '06 with something like 34% of the vote.
Once again, you're thinking in a vacuum. After two years of Obama-nomics and the idiot Dummy-crats stumbling around trying to run the show, the country will beg the Republicans to take back the Senate and the House, because at that time Obama will have something he doesn't have today, a record. Republicans can run on the reverse theme Dummy-crats did this time around "We're not Dummy-crats".

the republicans ran this year on the ground that they are not democrats, and they lost, big time, because they gave no reason why we should vote for them...rather, we've been given proof of every reason not to vote for them, and to vote for the dems...face it, the dems fix up repuke's messes.  It happened in the 1930s, it happened in the 1990s, it'll happen again now.
>> Thank you, Al !!

>> Georgia Senate run-off

How'd they get AlGore out his front door? The man is getting a tad, shall we say, beefy.
"The Eye" said "Things like SS reform and banking reform got filibustered out by the Democrats."

Hmmm.  Social Security reform.  Sure glad MY Social Security isn't wrapped up in the stock market right now.

By the way - that "The Eye" thing is a little 1984, isn't it?

Remember, Eye - Congress supported the war based on the DOCTORED intelligence document they were supplied with.  So the argument that Congress (Dems, in particular) are to blame for Iraq is a shoddy argument at best.
The world hates us for what blue states thieves with their greed and housing bubbles have done to their markets.

Save the Red States screw the rest

Yeah, you ever notice that? The Blue-est of states like NY, California, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania are all in the fiscal toliet. Solid Red states like Texas, Alaska, all the plains states and the SW US are doing just fine, even in economic hard times.
"strong re-election victory"?
Seriously?

Considering the DNC put $0 into his campaign and he was heavily HEAVILY underfunded and he was a Democrat running statewide in Texas, I'd say Noriega should have gotten beaten by about twice what he did.

I'd hardly call anything about the Cornyn campaign "strong", except for the stench of his hypocritical black and white "post partisan" ads.

Cornyn is a sacrificial lamb. He's being setup to take the next big hit in 2010 and they'll bring in someone else in 2012 in the hopes of making some gains back.

Sen. John Cornyn you are so right….  We must have checks and balances because the American people deserve accountability from Washington now more than ever; but not your unaccountable type.

It won't work since your talking heads: that stupid Hannity, the ugliest, snappish, questioner Greta, big fat wind Limbaugh who pleads more chaos, holier than thou Dr Laura, and don’t forget the other huffy, Laura and petulant Ann Coulter will not ask for democrats and other interest groups to join forces with republicans unless these groups will conform to their selfish ideologies.

Mark my words petty partisan-ship is in decline; whether they and you agree/perceive it or not.   Hands off tax cuts, our military President Elect Obama and continue Washington’s new, changing agenda. Sixty is the magic number you can’t deny.

Kudos and high regard President Elect Obama for vision, tolerance, and stewardship!

So Democrats, have your little turn. But remember, we're watching you.

Ohhhhh, NOW I'm scared!

Pleeze. The GOP got us into this mess and the Democrats will get us out. End of story.
S.B. Stein E.B. NJ - He's wondering about the Democrats having a super majority?  What did the Republicans do when they had it -- get us bloated with pork and centralize power in the president.  What a bunch of bad things to do!

A super-majority is 60, and the Republicans never had that many seats. If you're still confused, maybe you could find a Republican to help you count next time.
