Holder to be named attorney general

Posted: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 3:39 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Pete Williams
President-elect Obama has offered Eric Holder the position of attorney general, and Holder has accepted it, according to sources involved in the process. The formal announcement has been held up while Obama transition team members ran the idea past key senators. And Obama wanted to announce members of his financial team first -- Treasury Secretary and so on.

Holder is a former superior court judge and U.S. attorney in Washington and a former prosecutor in the Public Integrity section of the Justice Department. He was Deputy Attorney General under Janet Reno, during which he was well regarded. At one point, he strongly considered running for mayor of Washington, D.C., but decided being the No. 2 official at Justice was too good to pass up.

He also led the search team for Obama's running mate.

His only potential hang-up for confirmation is the controversy over the pardon of Marc Rich in the closing hours of the Clinton administration. Holder approved the pardon as acting attorney general, after Reno left, without paying much attention to it, and it turned out to be a big embarrassment to Clinton.

So far, the Hill response to Holder has been positive, officials say.

The offer to Holder was made last week, officials say, and he accepted it, conditioned on a good reception from the Hill. So this is as close to a done deal as it can get before it's announced.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Chris Donovan adds that Holder has held three jobs over his career that required U.S. Senate confirmation and he has yet to see a recorded vote against him.

In July 1997 he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a roll call vote of 100-0 for the job of Deputy Attorney General.

In September 1993 he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by Voice Vote for the job of U.S. Attorney for D.C.

In October 1988 he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by Unanimous Consent for the job of Associate Judge of Superior Court of D.C.

Daily Double: Presidents that survived and defended an attack on American soil? Name all of them if you can.
A shudder just ran through the Bob Jones School of Lawerin' 'n Stuff.

Back to chasing ambulances and keeping Flush Dimballs out of jail.
I like this selection.  I know enough about Eric Holder to believe he will excel in this position.
So far, I'm impressed by Obama's moves.  Now if I could just talk him out of making Clinton Secretary of State (lol).
Wonderful news. Can't wait for the next raid on Waco. I'm certain Eric has Janet's number if he needs help.
Another Clinton retread. Reno flunky to boot. Rather then work for the American people, Reno spent 99% of her time being Clintons personal attoney and fending off charges, that turned out to be true, against her boss. Holder's the same kind of guy. Look for him to start his snipe hunting on Day 1.
I will accept Obama as my president when hell freezes over. His staff is made up of tired old Clintonians. What a wuss. He needs a backbone.

Obama is little more than socialism with a smile.
Another in a series of Clinton "retreads".  Many of us volunteered, worked hard and gave of the limited funds we had so as a nation we could turn the page.  This isn't change - this is just more of the same!!!!

How disappointing - the last year was all for nothing.
It seems like he is following the new busines frame work in that if you are over 50 you are out.
...We all look forward I am sure to Mr. Holder's take on the War Crimes of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld.
Eric Holder is another of Barack's kiss butt types.
He'll fit into the mold nicely.
Looks like a great pick.
Yes, the Mark Rich pardon. Pardoning rich contributers to the Clinton retirement fund turned into quite the snafu now didn't it? Holder 'wasn't paying much attention to it?'! Wow! Already the Obama butt sniffers have some stink to cover up. And I'm sure Holder was held in 'high regard', by the Clintons. Just another old piece of corruption for the new Obama administration. Good ol'Chicago politics.
Not a good pic. Holdens veiws on the drug war mean more jail space taken by non violent pot smiokers instead of peaple who need to be in jail like murders and rapist.
So if Hillary becomes Secretary of State for the Obama Trauma she will have to give up her Senate seat, which means she'll have to give up being her own person to deliver to the world all of Obama's policies and ideology. She'd be nuts to do that.
> Holder has held three jobs over his career that required U.S. Senate confirmation and he has yet to see a recorded vote against him.<

If Obama wants sewage in his cabinet, let him.
Asside from that little hiccup,it looks like he has had a stellar performance. I say let POTUS-Elect Obama tap him in for the job.
Another great appointment - the euphoria continues!
Let's face it. Palin has more intestinal fortitude than the Pelosi Posse of Frank, Reid and even Obama.
And Biden is off in the weeds again ... looking for pumpkins.
I trust President Elect, Mr. Barack Obama's judgement, He is the man!  He can not please everybody, just trying to make the best choices.
I'm sure Obama has a lot of things he doesn't want his AG to pay attention to.
So much for real change. Obama is just reinstalling the Clinton administration.
Great selection. Holder brings with him a high degree of integrity that will get the DOJ back on track.
Eric Holder is a great choice for the position of U.S. attorney general. Congratulations!!
More Change I see.
You'd better watch your p's and q's ....'cause bad Obama's watching you.
Let's see how Republicans handle his confirmation.  My guess is that they approve it despite his dealings with Rich's pardon.  Big difference from when President Bush nominated John Ashcroft and the left went after him with a vengeance.
Right-wing racist bigots, you may begin your rantings in 3...2...1...NOW!

In all seriousness, so far Obama's batting around 999 in the decision making department (I'm still ticked at letting Leiberman off, but oh well).  It looks like this on is going to go through smoothly.

I hate to add to the gratuitous gushing here, but I'm quite impressed by Obama's decisions so far.  He seems to be making all of the right moves.  For the first time in a long time the majority of Americans are looking forward to a new presidential term, and I'm so amused at how that seems to burn up the GOP kool-aid drinkers that post here.  They'd rather wallow in their own doom-and-gloom pity-party, craping on every move the man makes, while the rest of us are looking forward.  People are starting to feel good about this country again, and it's a pretty nice feeling.

63 Days Until Inauguration Day!

There are those who can't wait for Obama to fall off the donkey and there are those who think that Obama IS the donkey.

Which ever is your case, thank you.
aND HIS FORST CASE WILL BE: Prosecuting the Bush Whitehouse and Cheney? Oh, one can dream.

Well Done Pres. Elect Obama
Well PARDON ME!  Get someone else!
The pardon of Mark Rich hell, that’s not even a potential hang-up for confirmation in comparison to Gonzo-gate. Eric Holder will be great attorney and will go after justice.
======================================================
So Democrats, have your little turn. But remember, we're watching you.

                      The Eye
========================================================
Hey Eye,
Set your the lens of  your eye in just a little bit of research of  the history the Deregulation; then   refocus The Eye to on Washington’s  fresh, new, changing agenda. Like I said hands off tax cuts, and our military; President Elect Obama will continue  Washington’s  fresh new, changing agenda. Sixty is the magic number you can’t deny. Wrap either your one eye or both eyes around that number.
I suspect that the most partisan Republicans will bring up the pardoning of Mark Rich.  That shouldn't really affect anything.  If the past is any clue, then it should be a fairly lopsided vote; my guess is about 75 to 25 give or take some votes.
This sounds like a great choice, one that is sorely needed to clean up the DOJ that has been trashed by the Bush Administration.
Another good pick.
Hillary must be shooting for Supreme Court justice. The SC needs a two-bit real estate lawyer on the bench. She can also give input into cases featuring cattle futures.
Eric Holder will be an excellent AG. The naysayers will voice their opinion that Prez Elect Obama is only recycling the Clinton administration, but it worked then and we need all the expertise available we can get. This is no time for OJT and besides, Mr. Holder couldn't be worse that Al Gonzales.

Prez Elect Obama seems to know how to get it right the first time. That can't be a bad thing.

He was a member of the Reno team that helped kill all of the people at the compound in Waco Texas under the Clinton administration. How many US citizens is he willing to murder in the name of "For the Good of the Country" under the Obama administration?
So far so good.Mr Obama is surrounding himself with people who (so far) has no other agendas but to serve the people and the country
More Waco's less Wackos
I say back off and let the man take office and give him and his appointees some space and then, if necessary, start criticizing the results or lack thereof. Why the big rush to condemn? The worst president in American history had eight years to produce his steaming pile, so let's see if Obama can muster the will & support to clean it up.
For all those whining about Clinton retreads, theres a limited amount of seasoned and experienced candidates - you don't want another admin full of Bob Jones flunkies right out of college.  Obama is drawing the best and the brightest - and the experienced.  I bet the majority of those commenting would also gripe if you told them the sky is blue.  Grow up and get over it.
How can anyone criticize Holder when we can compare him to Bush's first two choices of Ashcroft and Gonzalez? Is it a problem that Holder may actually respect the Constitution or the Geneva Convention?
Don't lose sight of Obama's roots.  He is a Chicago style politician.  He's filling his cabinet with hacks and yes men like this and, despite all the rhetoric, he is surrounded by lobbyists.  All the ex-flower children who fell for the cute smile and change message, enjoy.
Wow, I see haters every where I go. Jez, most of you guys woln't even give Obama a break. This is a great choice for AG. If he had wanted to go Partisan he would have gone for a John Edwards-type (although obviously not Edwards himself). Give the guy some slack, Holder is the very definition of a Centrist. Hell, W had him as his AG right after his transition.
Let's see, the folks that you have a choice in are from former POTUS cabinets, now what you have to do is from that pool pick who can do a better job than the present.  Until Pres. elect Obama is in office and past that 100 day mark, it is hard to say how things will be.  Once thing is for sure, the dunce in chief will be gone and his band of merry men who robbed this country of its glory, honor, and yes wealth will be gone as well.  It is time to start repairing the pieces of this country that have been so torn apart by the dunce in chief.
Oh man, all these right-wingers dredging up the 90s are so out of it. Go fight the Elian wars, stand up for the Koresh crazies and the other militia folks. Real main-stream of ya!

Also, most Democrats over the age of 35 worth their salt are going to have Clinton-administration ties--it was most of the entire decade of the last century.
Holder seems ok but I can see him adding to the problem of overcrowded prisons and increasing taxpayer expense.  I voted by writing in myself because I always vote, but it is about time we get at least one good candidate in a Presidential Election!!!!!  I think Obama is in over his confident little head
I'll take him over Gonzales any day, hour, min, sec of the week.
All this moaning and groaning about Clinton retreads...  Obama is facing HUGE problems created by the Repubs.  He needs a team that can hit the ground running in the DC circus, not learn on the job.  Way too slow for tackling problems that need immediate attention.  Better former Clinton folks than W holdovers ESPECIALLY in Justice.  We all know what a unholy job they did, trashing our civil rights and hiring inept cronies.  Obama is assembling a first rate team to help change the course we've been on for the last eight years.
President-elect Obama will need some experience in the White House. You cannot condem people for who they use to work for, some of them were and are very good at what they do. Please give Mr Obama a chance before you condem him.
